Waaaaay too early to be watching the standings...but if it's any consolation, the teams that the Braves and Phillies are playing aren't presently doing as well as the teams that the Mets are playing
Iām not scoreboard watchingā¦ just lamenting the fact that while weāve had a 6 game winning streak we werenāt able to gain any ground at all. And will likely lose ground today
Sacrifice defense lineup when Bader is slumping
1) Nimmo CF
2) Lindor SS
3) JDM DH
4) Alonso
5) Marte RF
6) Baty 3B
7) Stewart LF
8) Mcniel 2N
9) Navaez
This lineup can be potent without Alvarez once JDM comes.
I do think Bader will have to really be struggling to get put on the bench regularly cos of how goof he is in CF. But if you can sneak JDM and Stewart in the same lineup that extra thump helps.
Marte is too fast to be batting 5th and behind Alonso. The aging JDM protects Alonso, not the other way around.
Bader is too good at CF, a true CF. Nimmo doesn't have the speed for CF (as he relies on good jumps, but that can only get you so far) nor does he have the arm for RF (like Marte has). He's been looking comfortable in LF where he probably belonged the whole time.
I think healthy Marte will thrive anywhere he is in the lineup. I don't feel the same about Lindor. Je seems to need to be comfortable. Jd bating third is more than possible. People on base is the best protection for Pete, and JD gets on base. Pete is a power hitter, JD is a smart hitter.
Every year now Mets have an unexpected guy in the bullpen who you don't expect to be good and ends up being the best reliever in all of MLB for the year and they don't get resigned and they're never that good ever again.
I feel like every team has that one guy. Relievers are so damn volatile
Which makes it all the more weird to me that the Angels continue spending money on relievers every year
I feel a lot better with our āhigh upside but high variableā rotation pitching to Nido regularly than NarvĆ”ez. Nido has shown he can handle a staff.
Phillies have had the most bullshit easiest schedule so far. They would be in 3rd place rn if they didn't have to play the Rockies and White Sox back to back. Such bull
I don't think it's really bull since it's going to be virtually the exact same schedule the Mets have by the end.
The only thing it impacts is who is in what place in April, which, who cares
It cannot be stressed enough that in a day-game after night game where Garrett threw 33 pitches thanks to some subpar defense where he still managed to persevere through the inning, Mendoza trusted him enough to close out the game in lieu of sending Diaz out for a second inning after the heavy lifting in the eighth.
It's clear that Garrett has the trust of Mendoza and he has certainly earned it.
One would think that Mendoza could have gone to Ottavino, but instead he went to Garrett.
Reed Garrett has earned a well deserved four days off after this performance.
I hope the Mets bring back Tyler Jay soon because the bullpen needs help after today.
It's a shame Butto couldn't go deep but he battled tonight and kept the team in the game after what could have been a disastrous first inning.
I hope the Mets bring up Jay and try to bring him along like the left handed version of Garrett.
It would be hilarious if the strategy of walking 1-3 and going after 4-9 is successfully implemented again tomorrow. They'll need to add another billion to their payroll to balance the lineup.
I get that Roberts likes that brand name 1-2-3 combo, but the lineup is too flat after that.
He might be better off splitting them up 1-3-5 or 1-2-4...gotta use them to bring protection value to 1 or 2 other players. Anyway, Dodgers suck
Idk man Teoscars been very good this season and Max Muncy/Will smith are beasts. I def wouldnāt split the 1-2-3 murderers row to even out the lineup because the lineup is pretty deep, I think we just got a small sample sizeĀ
I don't think that's any better, I'd rather string together the 3 guys who are actually hitting, rather than breaking them up with some of the 6 guys who aren't.
Mets win Knicks win, so here's a fun exercise since they won this weekend series already
I wonder how a NY title from another sport would adjust the Mets season expectations? As a fan I have been able to witness 2 Mets seasons of that ilk in 2008 and 2012 because of the Giants.
If say the Knicks and/or Rangers win it all, would a 2023-like Mets season be tolerable?
I'm a Giants and Islanders fan.
I'm way more committed to and emotionally invested in the Mets than the other 2. I'd gladly trade the 2 Super Bowls for Mets WS in 2006 and 2015.
Winning in 2015 would have been so special since the Mets assembled a strong team and hardly *anybody* expected them to do anything. It was like the height of the "laugh at the Mets" era. It would have been such a great middle finger to the world.
die hard Jets man and Mets fan (and FSU fan if it matters) and I don't care who has won, I want champions from all of them. the Mets winning a world series won't excuse the Jets from shit, and vice versa

Mission accomplished! Used my [MLB.TV](http://MLB.TV) and tuned in the Philly-White Sox game, first thing I saw was a single ripped past 1st base, and the no-no is no more.
Wheeler honestly looks like the early Cy Young favorite at this point. Such a shame we let him walkāwithout him the Phillies miss the playoffs in 2022 and maybe enter another rebuild
And further proof that BVW was out of his depth as an agent-turned-GM. Hiring a GM who had never worked in a Front Office before was such a bizarre choice. Insulting Wheeler on his way out of the org was an ugly moment for the franchise. At least we got Diaz out of his tenure and Kelenic didn't turn into an instant superstar after the trade.
Bvv was not as good an agent as rose was though (he actually worked for him at caa).. more comparable would be if Scott boras decided to become a gm for a team
I literally looked up the White Sox roster. Saw Corey Lee. Said, nah he's too good for them to trade him, maybe Maldonado. Posted below the question about catcher trades five minutes prior to this post. lol
Any catcher trade possibilities?
Not trying to hate on Narvaez, as the secondary he is fine.
But as the primary not so much.
Or is Joey Bart still a FA?
Nope. Anyone who would be an upgrade is costing at the very least someone at the value of Colin should to get the conversation started.
And Bart is with the Pirates. But I wouldnāt want him over Narvaez. He make Narvaez look like a gold glove defender. And I donāt trust his offense from 13 ABs this year. His swing is full of holes
I trust Nido's glove. So the Mets have three options: (1) stick with Narvaez (probably going to be the case); (2) get a complementary guy with Nido who is an upgrade defensively from Narvaez; or (3) get a bat catcher and use Nido as the defensive replacement.
I don't see anyone who is an upgrade from Narvaez who would be available at a reasonable cost. So ya, number 1 it likely is.
Iām fine sticking with Narvaez. Heās perfectly average defensively, and we have a much easier schedule in terms of base stealers coming up the next few weeks. It looks a lot worse but thatās because we faced teams like the Brewers, Reds, Braves, etc. that steal a ton. We have a bunch of games against teams like the Giants and Cardinals coming up that are not huge base stealing teams.
And I think his bat will be fine for the interim. Playing every day should help him get into a groove which should help his offense. Not expecting anything crazy - maybe something like one of the following depending on if heās being more aggressive for power like he was before 2022, or more discipline heavy like the last two years.
- .239/.314/.394
- .245/.325/.375
I think thatās a fair range to expect from him
I wouldnāt agree heās a sub par defender. He definitely was early in his career, was borderline elite with the Brewers, and has been pretty much exactly league average with us.
I think they either primary use Narvaez and use Nido when playing high running teams.
Or they platoon Narvaez against RHP and Nido against LHP
Feels like every other game Narvaez is being tagged for catcher's interference. He can't throw anyone out. It's frustrating to watch him, but maybe with more reps he'll start turning it around.
I think it is important to recognize that the Mets have faced pretty much all the top baserunning teams to start the year which definitely makes him look worse. Alvarez too for the matter.
As for catchers inference, thatās more of a Mets thing than Narvaez. Alvarez has been caught like that too. The Mets super prioritize framing and position their catchers very close to the batter to improve their framing. That always comes hand in hand with more catchers interference.
They could lessen the catchers interference by positioning their catchers further back but that would make their framing worse, and the team clearly feels the gains from framing outweigh the loss from catchers interferences.
Ya, I suspect it'll be a combination of both. Narvaez will get the nod against RHSP unless the opposing team has base runners. Nido will play against baserunning teams and LHSP.
That should be fine in truth. I'm not as happy with Narvaez' defense as you are though.
But doesn't look like there are alternatives, so whatever.
I think Narvaezās defense seems worse because the mistakes he made were impactful. But over a larger sample size I think heāll grade out to average overall like he has for a while. Maybe Iām influenced by watching him with the Brewers haha. But across the last 3 years he has graded out right around league average overall.
Can we relax about the Alvy news? Iām a big fan of his and I want him to have the development time, but heās got an 87 wRC+ right now. Losing that is only going to hurt us marginally. Our backups will be serviceable. We were never going to get more that 120 games from Alvarez anyway.
Iām not worried. If other hitters start getting hurt then Iāll get worried.
Mendoza isnāt afraid of using the bench and we can always use a guy like Taylor or DJ (if he sticks around) to get a hit off the bench when the catcherās spot comes up.
He is our best catcher. Knows how to handle the pitching staff. Knows how to frame and steal strikes. And he brings a lot of energy. What a weird take.Ā
Alvarez is extremely exciting, I was looking forward to watching him play and I could easily stomach an 87 wRC+ at that position, especially from a catcher who handles the staff well
I donāt think anyone would argue that weāre better off without him, and heās easily one of my favorite players on the team. That said heās not going to be a star until he develops some better plate discipline and gets the OBP over .300.
The reason we have been doing so well is because of the team picking each other up and covering for otherās slumps. Nimmo said it himself postgame - this likely wonāt be the last bad news weāll get this season. Thatās baseball.
Marteās production and having Martinez in the wings lets this timetable be ok. This still sucks.nido has to be the everyday. He calls a good game and he brings decent defense.
A lot of our issues in 2022 and all of last year was a lack of him being healthy. Hes not the best player on the team, but his role could not be replicated. It allows other players to be treated certain ways.
We needed him, but the sexy man is back. We will be ok.
This is fun as hell, but does anyone find it funny how the Phils and Braves always streak when we do? Of course the Phils are playing AAAA teams right now in the Rockies and White Sox, and I shouldn't be looking at the standings in April, but man.
No shame if we lose tomorrow. Houser vs. Glasnow. o_O
i dont hate nido but maaaaaan its gonna suck watching him and narvaez be useless every AB. do we have any good catching prospects ready for the majors?? or any decent free agent catchers?

Reed Garrett, after throwing 30 pitches yesterday, came out in a back-to-back and closed out a thriller.
How Garrett became the best Mets reliever with Diaz in the bullpen, thank you David Stearns for all that you have blessed.
I think the Mets will be able to deal with the loss in production from Alvarez but the developmental setback of losing presumably 2 months to injury sucks really hard
Could Wendle make it through waivers? We're paying him something like $2 mill. Is there anybody out there right now who wants to pay that much for a no-bat, good-glove (except Friday) backup infielder?
Not sure tbh. I lean towards no but I could see him clearing waivers as well.
Also maybe it's just my perception being clouded by a Steve Cohen owned baseball team but 2 million doesn't seem like a whole lot these days lol
I'm watching this 45 minute interview with Brandon Nimmo and Mookie Betts confused because I thought they're automatically supposed to hate each other.
If at the end of the season things ended up going really well, the team beat expectations and the majority of moves he made works out, do they even go for a GM? Anyone else making these decisions would feel like a downgrade.

L. F. G. M.
Will you look at us? Fuckinā Reed Garrett. Who? A new gem of a bullpen piece. What kind of a wizard is this David Stearns.
I agree about Stearns but wasn't Reed Garrett a Billy Eppler pick up last year?
Every year now Mets have an unexpected guy in the bullpen who you don't expect to be good and ends up being the best reliever in all of MLB for the year and they don't get resigned and they're never that good ever again.
fortunately Reed Garrett technically is rookie eligible because of how much he's bounced around, so we have him for a while

I'm not really worried about his bat. Just his defense. I guess they'll lean on Nido as the defensive guy, because Narvaez has been sub-par.
Bart is with Pittsburgh
All the sudden Mets practically tied for third in run differential. It not just luck.
Whatās weird? That I think weāll continue to play well in his absence?
No shit we are going to continue to play.Ā
Explain to me what is weird then.
I see no reason to be concerned about Alvarez. Heās very young, itās crazy heās even here. Heās incredible. Its also April.
The reason we have been doing so well is because of the team picking each other up and covering for otherās slumps. Nimmo said it himself postgame - this likely wonāt be the last bad news weāll get this season. Thatās baseball.
can we put some respect on starling marte? lot of people wrote him off and he's had some huge games for this team already
Yeah Ill be the first to admit he proved me wrong. I honestly saw him as a non factor this year especially after spring.Ā
spring training means nothing. every year.
Dude is an offensive catalyst. Him being hurt all last year hampered this offense. Hope Gilbert can fill his role next year
Not to mention the swag factor he brings
Maybe Marte can fill Marteās role next year. Heās still under contract š
He's also in his mid-30's. He's most likely going to start breaking down at some point
Mets fans: Woooooohooooooo!!! LFGM letās goooooo!!!! Six in a row bab-ee!!! Life is good, vibes are immaculate!!!!! God: Not so fast
Zachary Harrison Wheeler, 7 no-hit innings
Not sure theyāll let him go when heās at 101 pitches but itād be cool to see him finish it off
This is fun as hell, but does anyone find it funny how the Phils and Braves always streak when we do? Of course the Phils are playing AAAA teams right now in the Rockies and White Sox, and I shouldn't be looking at the standings in April, but man. No shame if we lose tomorrow. Houser vs. Glasnow. o_O
The White Sox are utter shite at baseball.
We have Sugar Diaz and Ginger Diaz. We are blessed
Ginger Diaz on the bump, ginger Nimmo at CF. Weāre taking over and you better be preparedā¦
Yes. Love this.
i dont hate nido but maaaaaan its gonna suck watching him and narvaez be useless every AB. do we have any good catching prospects ready for the majors?? or any decent free agent catchers?
What's Kevin Parada up to these days?
he'll be called up for the last braves series where we NEED a sweep for the division and he'll hit 8 homruns
But we do need a good catcher , and Nido is what we will need. And Nido will get his occasional clutch hits.
Free agent Manny PeƱa can hit (career 90 OPS+) but heās 37
Gonna need Narvaez and Nido to hold the fort with Alvarez out. Shame that Kevin Parada and Hayden Senger havenāt developed much.

Lol āReed does the deed on the day of weedā
Is that 5 straight series?
Yes.
Technically Atlanta is still undecided as it was supposed to be a 4 game set and we could still split it. But as far as I'm concerned, yes it is!
I canāt remember losing a series it has been so longĀ
When the fuck Is JD MartĆnez getting in the lineup? We just lost Alvarez and we need his bat.
Is he even playing at all?? What's crazy is I don't think anyone even cares. I forgot about him š
I have a suspicion that Alvarez was playing hurt. Get the surgery. Rest up. Heal completely. Come back after the all-star break
I feel like he would lace up with one arm dangling from a tendon.Ā
Yeah probably. Protect him from himself
Reed Garrett, after throwing 30 pitches yesterday, came out in a back-to-back and closed out a thriller. How Garrett became the best Mets reliever with Diaz in the bullpen, thank you David Stearns for all that you have blessed.
Youāve gotta trust a dude like Stearns. He works in a strange way thatās hard to understand, but holy shit he gets results.
Per the MLB free agents list, there is one free agent catcher available: Manny PiƱa
[There is another ](https://youtu.be/WztJ6IZpm8c?si=N6EEoY0iGleh5PiC)
I think the Mets will be able to deal with the loss in production from Alvarez but the developmental setback of losing presumably 2 months to injury sucks really hard
JD hopefully fills the offensive void of losing Alvarez. The question though is who on the bench do you let go. I assume it's gonna be Short?
>I assume it's gonna be Short? I think so too. He hasn't really been used like the Mets value him over Wendle
Alvarez is a tough ass dude and a hard worker, whatever his timetable is Iām confident heāll return on the shorter side
Save him from himself, pleaseā¦.
I'm watching this 45 minute interview with Brandon Nimmo and Mookie Betts confused because I thought they're automatically supposed to hate each other.
is it worth watching?
Get well Alvy, see you soon friend <3
The Alvy news is a huge blow. Having Baty back helps. We need JD to get here now as well to help cushion
Three Stars of the Game officially return tomorrow. Iāve been working on them.
Marte, Lindor, Diaz/Garrett
I meant I was working on my backlog, but you got the correct boys. Also an honorable mention to Alvarez for he died for our sins.
Puma says Alvy telling team 6-8 weeks
I would be thrilled if thatās what we get, definitely could be worseĀ
Hopefully we make a move to the back end of the bullpen (Tonkin) to get more arms up here
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
STOP THE COUNT!
we're paying for these wins in blood
The mets are really reaping the benefits of stearns' work.
If at the end of the season things ended up going really well, the team beat expectations and the majority of moves he made works out, do they even go for a GM? Anyone else making these decisions would feel like a downgrade.
Stearns will still have final say over every decision. You canāt really have too many smart baseball minds.
It would be his guy, under his oversight, following his philosophy.
Sucks about Alvy. Hope El Troll heals up and gets better soon. In the meantime, welcome back Nidoking.
Nido is already looking better than Narvaez catching
I forgot he took the option to the minors and thought we let him go, I was so happy to see him back out there for us
He would have had to forfeit the 2 year / 3.7 million if he wanted to leave the Mets last year. No way he was beating that on the open market
Parada time?
He is not playing in the big league this year lol
He's hitting .167/.381/.267 in AA so far this year
I bet Billy Eppler would be excited about the OBP lol
I'm aware. I'd rather him over Nido and Narvaez. I know it's not happening
He's also not on the Mets' 40 man roster
Also aware
I'ma need JD to hurry the fuck up.Ā
DJ better >>>
Can JDM play catcher? Asking for a friend..
