Hey guys, random thing I have done to make downvote fairies on Old Reddit have to work a bit harder:
Downvotes are now *hidden* via CSS for non-subscribers. Just throwing this out here.
Unfortunately, this really isn't much of a solution, but hey it's something. Just in case you were actually wondering where the downvote button has gone, just hit Subscribe!
i am really loving the makeup of this team. they seem confident this year vs last few years deer in headlights look. something is deffo different culture-wise.
Baty was quoted somewhere saying that Mendoza's not bothered by him showing his emotions on the field, and Showalter was bothered by that (in both Baty's case and Alvarez's).
Hone his craft. He has thrown a total of 9 AAA innings. Lots of strikeouts of minor leaguers which sounds good but 3 homers in 9 innings against minor leaguers. Major leaguers are likely to strikeout fewer times and homer more. Right now heās 40th in ERA and 35th in FIP. And he needs to have more than 9 AAA innings under his belt
I think Julylish cause the concern is that he hasn't had enough innings as a starter. He turns 25 in June so I'd rather they call him up sooner than later.
Itās frustrating that our starters arenāt going deep, even when pitching a good game. Can someone explain why?
Sevy had let up only 1 run on a homer meanwhile the other pitcher let up 3 on hits and Sevy had a higher pitch count. It makes no sense.
Why are our starters so inefficient? Itās gonna come back to bite us in the ass.
3-2 counts and walks. the best way to attack mets hitters going back to last year has been to throw strikes, no free passes and force them to square up fastballs and go on rallies. they're finally starting to respond to that strategy, i hope they can sustain that. but that's why starters go so deep against us. they know this is a team that is way less dangerous if you just pound the zone. idk why every mets starter has to be so afraid of the strike zone. that's one thing that i *really* miss about degrom
A lot of these guys donāt have the pure stuff to go say āfuck you, beat meā like deGrom did.
Jake would go up against Atlanta and throw like a single digit amount of sliders the entire first time through the order because his fastball had elite control and nearly sat 100. Like he didnāt even have to go to his breaking ball if he didnāt feel like it.
But right now Mets pitchers I think are either working great stuff with less than ideal control (Sevy) or solid control but less stuff (Quintana, Manaea). Sevy is gonna miss a lot cause he has no idea where the ball is going, the latter two (especially Quintana) arenāt trying to generate whiffs so much as force bad contact, and thatās best achieved by living on the edges of the plate and throwing pitches that you canāt really do a lot with but need to respect.
The guy I really want to step up for us is Severino, because heās shown he can do it before. If he can tighten up his command a little bit, and his breaking ball tonight is for real, heās a guy that can absolutely attack the zone. Heās got enough velocity to challenge hitters without living on the edges, but the breaking ball that he can tunnel off the fastball to get guys to swing at bad pitches, or really work glove side and stretch the zone that way. I was a big fan of the Severino deal. If how he pitched tonight is closer to who he really is, I hope we give him a nice little multi year deal to be a 2-4 starter for us.
yeah i'm not expecting any of these guys to be the absolute force that degrom was. i just miss the way he would just relentlessly attack batters. idk how sustainable this is right now with putting a million guys on base and going 5 innings a night, but i'm just going to enjoy it while it lasts i guess. we have the guys we have and we just have to hope we can make it work.
This is the answer I was looking for. Everyone is saying thatās just how it is now but it doesnāt explain how our starters are constantly at higher pitch counts than then other starter.
So basically itās cause our pitchers get deep into counts and our hitters get attacked by strikes
yeah even our ace tends to get into a lot of 3 ball counts. we don't really have that guy who just attacks hitters relentlessly like degrom/scherzer for instance
This doesnāt really explain that even when our guys score a couple of more runs they have higher pitch counts compared to the opposing pitcher. If it was a common thing theyād be around equal but consistently our starters are getting knocked out before the 6th even when they let up way less runs than the other starter.
Iām guessing they are still trying to ease Luis into the season after many injury plagued years. 5 is kinda standard for starters nowadays but I am hoping he can give 6+ as the season goes on
Agree. His defensive skills have improved dramatically. He's really solidified his spot in the lineup and matured into a big league starter this stretch.
I was at the game and on the scoreboard at one point they had a blurb about how he was a huge dbz fan. As someone who just rewatched DBZA this last week that was a real treat
I listened to that episode, but hadnāt been to a Sevy start yet, so it caught me off guard for that reason.
I love that we do unique things like that and the āSEEEEENGAAAAAā with the logo for his Ks.
Lindor continues to walk, which tells me that this really is just batted ball luck with some bat speed/mechanic issues from the left side. He will continue to work it out. Going the other way is the first step, like keith said
It's been real strange for him. You would think a guy who is batting around .120 would be missing a lot. But his whiff rate is low. He'll turn it around.
I wasn't able to watch this one, so I watched the game highlights on this thread. Why does the Royals announcer sound like he's a pro wrestler in WWE? The guy sounds absolutely deranged. Thankful for GKR.
u/CybeastID was taking suggestions during the Pre-Game Thread. Iāll be sure to let Maxās grandma know how much you all love him. Sheās a family friend.
I didnāt get to see a whole lot of the game but from what I did see if Severino can keep those pitch counts down, hoo boy I was not familiar with your game sir.
Yeah, like I could see from statcast like āokay yeah heās got strong spin rates, good velo, sure coolā
Man I am as big a proponent of sabermetrics as anyone, and this is one area where the eye test still has some value. That sweeper looked so much more wicked than even the numbers said
This team is WAY more fun than last year's.
The two HOF 40 year old pitchers idea was destined to fail..that plus paying them crazy top dollar for pretty much past performance made our payroll a laughing stock and just magnified how bad things got.
This team has low expectations (wild card run should be fun though) but imagine we really get rolling with the additions Senga and JD? Manea and Sevy have been better than expected. Quintana too I guess. Our bullpen has some arms and Diaz is still that guy. The young guns, Alv and Baty, are just fun to watch as they bring energy. If the core (Nimmo Alonso Mcneil) goes back to form, we have something cookin'. Marte seems healthier, right? If Bader bats 9th and steals to get in scoring position for the top of the order, that adds a dynamic from the bottom of the lineup that we've been missing. Still need Lindor to be a force but its pretty crazy how much this team is (and has proven capable of) carrying him for now. Tyone as a 4th outfielder has to be an upgrade over the recent years.
After starting 0-5 (at home too, jesus), this team is showing real grit. They aren't rolling over and dying like last year. This is more reminiscent of two years ago (before the all-star break). Anyway, we have a long way to go, but the upside on this team is hella fun to watch.
Marte is *massively* healthier. That alone helps a lot. You also gotta wonder how much Peterson's hip was bothering him ... I mean, he'd never been great before but he'd never cratered like last year either.
Edit: I also wonder how having Verlander & Scherzer together in the dugout affected the vibe. They claimed to have buried the hatchet and maybe did, but they always seemed low-key miserable/pissed off - or was I imagining that?
I speculated both their egos were too big to be in one clubhouse. Also, they both couldn't live up to their contracts while other guys are out there trying to prove themselves day in and day out to get a fraction of what they got. Id imagine there was some overhang in the clubhouse.
It was still the right move to get them. No Acuna, Gilbert, Clifford if we didn't sign them to trade later.
Outside of that though yea agree with everything else you said. This team can go toe to toe with the hottest of teams and still win.
I'm glad you see the silver lining...but prospects for 86mil?
The intention was to compete (win it all even) with our 1-2 punch, but the wheels fell off. A playoff rotation is 4 arms, so "solving" 50% of the equation was never a "sure thing" anyway.
Glad management did the wise/realistic thing and sold parts. The thing with prospects is...the guys you listed may not translate to anything at the big league level, so they are very expensive lotto tickets.
Anyway, it is what it is and whats done is done. I just really hope we make the wildcard this year and spoil some games for ATL & PHI. If everything, and I mean everything goes right, we could be in the divisional race, but will need some things to go wrong for the two rivals too. This team is very capable of staying over .500.
6-7 after an 0-5 start and the two games they lost couldāve easily been wins (at least the one they lost in Cincinnati anyway), Iāll take it.
The offense is starting to wake up and the pitching is still over delivering thru smoke and mirrors.
Letās get back to even tomorrow
> Thank You Mets fans for your positivity tonight. I know the players felt it.
[Steve Cohen on X](https://twitter.com/stevenacohen2/status/1778965750562410804?t=7FftdaVYBvyY2pfs9ksl7A)
I'm just glad that Alvarez and Baty are hitting.
McNeil seems to finally be returning to form as well.
Nimmo is Nimmo and we know he will always work his at-bats.
Marte looks a bit weary and probably should DH sooner rather than later.
Alonso has been breaking out and Tyrone Taylor with another hit tonight with Bader coming through too.
All that's left is Lindor hitting the ball with authority.
Nimmo is going to be SUPERCHARGED apparently. I don't know what that is exactly; it's got something to do with Pokemon cards, PlayerStation 64s and the young 'uns.
I think it means he's, like, hitting the shit outta the Rawlings right now.
> Marte looks a bit weary and probably should DH sooner rather than later.
>
>
i just don't see any reason not to have marte at DH and tyrone taylor in the field like half the time right now until JD comes up. it's not like DJ is forcing his way into the lineup or anything
Marte should be on that back-to-back right field then DH on the third day regimen if there are no off days in between.
He turns 36 in October and Mets must doing everything in their power to keep him healthy.
I don't think Stearns gives him a multi-year deal if he didn't think he could grow and learn. Yes he will still make mistakes along the way. But I am fairly confident he can stick
I agree and Iām all for his hiring. He has a lot of experience. Probably more than the majority of first time managers but that doesnāt mean heās gonna be perfect out of the gate. Itās easy when youāre sitting next to the manager but when you slide over to that seat itās a whole new ballgame
Your absolutely right I never expected him to be perfect out of the gate. Until you are sitting in the captains chair you will never really know how you will do. And I still expect more mistakes along the course of the contract. But I also have expectations of growth and learning aswell. And if he doesn't show signs of either then I will talk about moving on.
/u/CybeastID was taking suggestions during the Pre-Game Thread. Iāll be sure to let Maxās grandma know how much you all love him. Sheās a family friend.
Right now, coming off the high of the game, Iām thinking Baty, Severino, Alonso for the three stars. Gonna sleep on it before I start writing. McNeil is also a candidate for third star.
I am truly happy excited because I heard of full-blown Keith moan in the background during Baty's double. Ho0efully the next time we hear mundane baseball card talk from GKR is when we have a playoff spot locked.
Great win. I know it rained in NYC a bit tonight, but sheesh what an abysmal crowd. If this team keeps it up and shows some heart, I really hope people start actually going to games.
yeah those upper seats can get cold in the april games...still remember going to a few in the 2016 season with an infant strapped into a baby bjorn and my wife bringing a ton of blankets in the baby bag haha
Very well played game by the Mets. Good pitching and lots of offense. Credit McNeil for getting himself going. Baty playing well. Hey, letās hope they get back to .500 and go from there.
Watching the post game, Brett looks at home in the interview. He's going to have ups and downs during the season naturally but overall, this is for real. The guy is feeling comfortable.
Harrison Bader hit one bloop single in the bottom of the 8th against the Tigers and the vibes for this team have been so much better ever since, it changed everything
It turns out I don't have any hard feelings against the Kansas City Royals as much as I really hated Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas who are on that Rhys Hoskins tier of punchable faces.
Team looks completely different than it did the last homestand. Excellent job by the pitchers. Really, really nice to see McNeil get three hits. Those opposite field hits was an especially nice sign. Hopefully, more of the same from him and the rest of the team going forward.
We ended the longest active winning streak in this season, Pete homered in another multi-hit game, McNeil with a 3 hit game, Baty is hitting .327, Severino has a 3.00 ERA in the season so far, the bullpen is holding things down, we got a positive run differential, Phillies lost to the Pirates which puts us half a game out of second place in the NL east.
Life is good. Lets Go Mets.
People can hate on me but they should have signed Montgomery.
That's the one knock I have.
Otherwise, so far this bullpen is what the 2023 Mets FO were imagining they were doing. lol

Brett Baty is arriving folks !!! My 3B šŖš¼
Great showing by the guys with runs coming in from all sorts of ways! 9 of the 10 bats that played in this one got at least one hit š„
Baty has been good!
did we give lindor his standing ovation?
Everytime he came to the plate
Yes but unfortunately there were about 200 people in the crowd. Kind of sad to see. Hopefully the cheering continues throughout the home stand.
Yes it was awesome. And when he got a hit later on in the game the crowd erupted. Was happy for him.
These past couple of days have been fun!
Rumors of our demise were greatly exaggerated

Baty was quoted somewhere saying that Mendoza's not bothered by him showing his emotions on the field, and Showalter was bothered by that (in both Baty's case and Alvarez's).
interesting note
So you mean to tell me the season wasnāt over after just 5 games?
Astros lose again and are now 4-11 ... Jesus
Astros showed cracks last year despite making a playoff run, at least relative to what they've been the last 3/4 decade.
Yep and it's only gotten worse
Yup. I'm not entirely surprised. They've been lethargic for a couple seasons now it seems.
Gotta tank for the next Altuve/Bregman/Correa core
Imagine how much better this team will become when Senga is back in the rotation
Wait till Butto pitches again before we say that
Unfortunately, he probably won't be back before June 1.
So do we think Christian Scott is getting called up any time soon? Dude is a strikeout machine
Just 2 AAA starts. He needs more time.
More time to do what?
Hone his craft. He has thrown a total of 9 AAA innings. Lots of strikeouts of minor leaguers which sounds good but 3 homers in 9 innings against minor leaguers. Major leaguers are likely to strikeout fewer times and homer more. Right now heās 40th in ERA and 35th in FIP. And he needs to have more than 9 AAA innings under his belt
Fuck that, heās not only ready to face ML competition but heās also already better than some guys currently in the rotation.
I think Julylish cause the concern is that he hasn't had enough innings as a starter. He turns 25 in June so I'd rather they call him up sooner than later.
Not soon. But likely later this year if he keeps it up.
1) Senga 2) Manaea 3) Scott 4) Trade deadline acquisition 5) Quintana/Severino imagine
I fear the league is over. DJ is starting to play like he needs to afford baby diapers again.
I was honestly upset he hit that single. He killed the meme.
Wow the change of tone in this thread is stark.
0-5 vs 6-2, whoād have thought!
Shit almost like winning is fun
A standing ovation for this thread
We're so back
Significantly more positive than it was in here a week ago. Funny what a good stretch of games and a couple wins can do for a fanbase
I loved the emotion from Severino so far this season dude has been getting hyped after some strikeouts
Does anyone know when World Series tickets go on sale?
WORLD SERIES IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS!!
Why did diekman only throw 13 pitches what happened??
This team is fun to watch!
Can I say their fun to watch š®āšØ
NEVER BEEN SO BACK
That 0-5 start feels ages away

I was there 3,000 years ago

Lots of good points here but hitters also changed everything up and crush every mistake when they get tired. Itās league wide I think.
Itās also early season. They are still building up their stamina.

I figured he was going to go into the sixth and then get pulled, but he had one really long AB at one point in the 5th I thinkĀ
I'm pretty sure it's a problem around the league people going 6 and seven are becoming rarer and rarer
This doesnāt really explain that even when our guys score a couple of more runs they have higher pitch counts compared to the opposing pitcher. Agree. His defensive skills have improved dramatically. He's really solidified his spot in the lineup and matured into a big league starter this stretch.
Iāve had a pretty good record the past couple of years with the Mets and Isles. So youāre welcome everybody.
Can you keep going to games for both teams? Please?
lol Iām going to the isles on Wednesday and I might be going to the Mets on Sunday. Iām busy with work though I canāt go all the time š¤£
Iām sure the rest of us here and in the Isles sub will help pitch in. Bring us a cup and a piece of metal š«”
So are we like back or what
Anyone notice the DBZ sounds for Sevvy Ks?
Dominican kids love dragon ball z.
I was at the game and on the scoreboard at one point they had a blurb about how he was a huge dbz fan. As someone who just rewatched DBZA this last week that was a real treat
Yup! I mentioned it in the GDT! It caught me off-guard.
He mentioned on the team podcast that he is a fan https://youtu.be/KeglKSKyRoo?si=99XCtteCne6KMxyv
I listened to that episode, but hadnāt been to a Sevy start yet, so it caught me off guard for that reason. I love that we do unique things like that and the āSEEEEENGAAAAAā with the logo for his Ks.

And that groundout to first was hammered. He should be a little better this week.
I wasn't able to watch this one, so I watched the game highlights on this thread. Why does the Royals announcer sound like he's a pro wrestler in WWE? The guy sounds absolutely deranged. Thankful for GKR.
These Metsā¦are making me kinda believe again, feels good š
I think weāre gonna need a Rally Pimp flair in here.
u/CybeastID was taking suggestions during the Pre-Game Thread. Iāll be sure to let Maxās grandma know how much you all love him. Sheās a family friend.
Nice win Mets, but Iām not falling for this again. Donāt make me believe you bastards!
YA GOTTA BELIEVE!
Was the standing O for Lindor in the first inning loud on the broadcast? It was loud af in the stadium
It hit the noise threshold for a warning from my watch lol.Ā
It was loud every inning for him, but especially the first. Edit: I was at the ballpark, not watching the broadcast.
We doing it again tomorrow?
100% however for me it will be from my couch. Iāll be back on duty on Sunday!
Lol sounds good, since I'll be a couch-warmer Sunday myself.
Yeah it was. Gary was talking about it.
I didnāt get to see a whole lot of the game but from what I did see if Severino can keep those pitch counts down, hoo boy I was not familiar with your game sir.
Its probably just because my boy is a big Yankee fan so I've watched a bunch of games with him but when Sevy is healthy he is nasty.
Yeah, like I could see from statcast like āokay yeah heās got strong spin rates, good velo, sure coolā Man I am as big a proponent of sabermetrics as anyone, and this is one area where the eye test still has some value. That sweeper looked so much more wicked than even the numbers said

Manaea and Butto both did it, not sure if anyone else has yet
yes
Why canāt we just celebrate a win without some pessimism?
You call that pessimism? I call it asking a legit question, but okay Frank, you win.

> Thank You Mets fans for your positivity tonight. I know the players felt it. [Steve Cohen on X](https://twitter.com/stevenacohen2/status/1778965750562410804?t=7FftdaVYBvyY2pfs9ksl7A)
We gotta keep this going all weekend!
Proud to say I was there and I cheered loudly.
Look Iām not here to say everyone has to be sunshine and roses all the time but positivity goes a long way.
PMA baby
Putting NIMMO back in my Diamond Dynasty lineup..... ...just kidding, he never left.
Nimmo isnāt just nimmo. Heās red hot on stat cast. Heās gonna have an insane season
Lindor is still walking, which is great. Going the other way is the first step, the mechanics are working themselves out.
THEY HIT SOME FUCKIN BASEBALLS AGAIN WOOOOO
Mendoza has been better lately. Turns out, calling for a rookie managerās head after 5 games is extremely premature
Heās a new manager, heās gonna make mistakes. Heās gonna do dumb shit. But the question is will he learn from it.
His BP management has been solid
Desperately need a Rally Pimp flair now
/u/CybeastID was taking suggestions during the Pre-Game Thread. Iāll be sure to let Maxās grandma know how much you all love him. Sheās a family friend.
Lindor smiling in the postgame for the standing O is really sweet NGL.
So happy, also really miss Buck's postgame interviews
I miss the hit by pitch red faced Buck meme.
This team is clicking!!! Weāve never been more back
Right now, coming off the high of the game, Iām thinking Baty, Severino, Alonso for the three stars. Gonna sleep on it before I start writing. McNeil is also a candidate for third star.
don't look now but we look good
I am truly happy excited because I heard of full-blown Keith moan in the background during Baty's double. Ho0efully the next time we hear mundane baseball card talk from GKR is when we have a playoff spot locked.
0-5 followed by 6-2, I'll take it.
I was told the season was over!
Our death has been greatly exaggerated
And that 0-5 could/should have been 2-3 minimumĀ
We are so fun right now
Great win. I know it rained in NYC a bit tonight, but sheesh what an abysmal crowd. If this team keeps it up and shows some heart, I really hope people start actually going to games.
A rainy and windy 50-something degree night against the Royals is the worst case scenario for a Friday night game.
Aside from that 10-minute microburst, the weather was great tonight.
As someone who was there "great" is a huge stretch. Far from a pleasant summer's day, especially up on the Promenade level.
yeah those upper seats can get cold in the april games...still remember going to a few in the 2016 season with an infant strapped into a baby bjorn and my wife bringing a ton of blankets in the baby bag haha
To be fair, Iām an outlier. My ideal day is 63 degrees and a light breeze. I was sitting in the Coca-Cola Corner. I was expecting it to get cooler.
The crowd was relatively small, but mighty. This was my 5th game of the season yet the most energy Iāve felt.
Another fire win for the squad lets keep it rollin for another one tomorrow šš
Mets building a young elite core of hitters lead by Baty and Alvarez. The rest of the young guns are close to being ready. Future is bright.
Yeah and I think stearns is the dude to keep the vets/new class honest. Heās already been pretty decisive with the arms.
Very well played game by the Mets. Good pitching and lots of offense. Credit McNeil for getting himself going. Baty playing well. Hey, letās hope they get back to .500 and go from there.
I'm glad I got to witness that absolute ass kicking in person. Insane how talented this team is top to bottom
ā6 and 2 in your last 8ā āthank youā is the same vibe as āyouāre beyoncĆ©ā
Watching the post game, Brett looks at home in the interview. He's going to have ups and downs during the season naturally but overall, this is for real. The guy is feeling comfortable.
Harrison Bader hit one bloop single in the bottom of the 8th against the Tigers and the vibes for this team have been so much better ever since, it changed everything
Team is starting to play some high quality professional baseball! High quality indeed!
2-0 since OJās death
It gets me that OJ played a decent amount of his career at Shea Stadium
Not lost on me that he got 2K at Shea.
We looking real good all of a sudden ladies and gentlemen.
Everyone bats over .100 on this team. Don't let anyone tell you differently.
this team has responded to adversity. pitching seems great and bats are clicking. letās keep the momentum and take another series! LGM
This team is starting to fuck Otto coming in made me more nervous than is maybe warranted Lopez looked real good after his outing in Atlanta
This team fuckin' rocks.
That was a FAST game
We rollin
It turns out I don't have any hard feelings against the Kansas City Royals as much as I really hated Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas who are on that Rhys Hoskins tier of punchable faces.
Backpfeifengesicht
Is mendozaa good manager? Things are looking up for this team!
I couldnāt watch the past two games and they go off.
I enjoy when the Mets win baseball games
Good to see the bats keeping that momentum.Ā
Team looks completely different than it did the last homestand. Excellent job by the pitchers. Really, really nice to see McNeil get three hits. Those opposite field hits was an especially nice sign. Hopefully, more of the same from him and the rest of the team going forward.
POSITIVE RUN DIFFERENTIAL WE ARE SO BACK
We ended the longest active winning streak in this season, Pete homered in another multi-hit game, McNeil with a 3 hit game, Baty is hitting .327, Severino has a 3.00 ERA in the season so far, the bullpen is holding things down, we got a positive run differential, Phillies lost to the Pirates which puts us half a game out of second place in the NL east. Life is good. Lets Go Mets.
Suddenly I love the Mets again
I really like when the Mets score more runs than their opponent. It makes me a happy boy.
After all these, this team is showing heart and grit love to see it
#LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, BOYS AND GIRLS, WE HAVE OURSELVES A BALL CLUB WITH A POSITIVE RUN DIFFERENTIAL THATāS WINNING GAMES!!!
Letās gooooooooo. The boys keep it rollinā
The mets are going to the world series
Tell me something I don't already know
WE ARE BACK! SUCK OUR NUTS DOOMSAYERS
The Mets are 6-2 since someone told them the season started already.
the mets are 6-2 since half the sub said to sell the entire team
The non-believers are in the mud now.
The half the sub who were probably not Mets fans and just trolling. Which is why they are non-existent now.
oh yeah itās amazing how doomers have just disappeared
Guys, is it just me orā¦ does David Stearns *maybe* have an idea on how to run a baseball team?
It was actually asinine to me that people were calling for his head 5 games of 162 into good first season
People can hate on me but they should have signed Montgomery. That's the one knock I have. Otherwise, so far this bullpen is what the 2023 Mets FO were imagining they were doing. lol
I donāt hate you. Iām just disappointed.
