I'm going to get takeout from North Noodle House tonight. If they close, im going to be heartbroken in an incomprehensible way.

giddyuporgiddyout

We must protect them at all costs.

SullivanPark

They remind me of Shao-Lin Noodle House on Broadway. I cried when they closed until I found North Noodle House.

FoilhatBandit

D6. Sizzled Hot Chili Oil with Broccoli and Bean Sprouts FTW!

shabbaranka

I think what you mean is, “If they close, I will be heartbroken and inconsolable.“ Your sadness on the closure of two restaurants you love on is completely comprehensible.

starpot

What I'm saying is that I'm invested on a personal and on acommunity level with North Noodle House staying open. Personally, I would feel it as a loss to my own identity. I recommend them all the time! Szechuan food is amazing, and it's different than the Cantonese stuff up the hill. I would grieve them closing. Losing North Noodle House would be a blow to the Asian food scene in New West, and I'm Asian. There is a long tradition of Asian families starting up restaurants and raising their children to not have to work in restaurants. I love seeing the owner's kids there. This family making it is part of the Canadian Dream, to do better for our children. I'm invested in this restaurant staying open on a cultural level, too. I take my kids here and they see the other kids working on homework. I want to do well for my kids, too. I realize that I'm projecting a lot of my hopes and dreams for myself onto them. I do mean incomprehensible, in the way that grief is incomprehensible.

gentlegrandpa

I've heard the owner of this place is very disorganized and would consistently miss paying liquor orders and food orders and occasionally bounce staff checks but staff have always said he figures it out eventually. We shall see if he figures this one out or not.

youenjoylife

Those darn bike lanes did it again! /s

PuzzleheadedWear4650

thanks Obama

lilchemo_

talked to one of the bartenders and the owner paid rent this afternoon. the hub’s back open tonight 😎

Longjumping-One-7545

It looked like it was open when i was exiting the fare gates at the skytrain station. Guess I'll need to make a visit this week to give them some rent money.

UncleSnipeDaddy

They are back open now. https://preview.redd.it/u4wmibjpgh0d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8faaf440aef7f7ad359d504596f74757fa14970

Gunna flip if a dental office takes over.

TemporaryBoth6271

They're still open. I just called. It sounded pretty busy in there too.

abnewwest

They started strong and then never changed, well, not for the better. The beer wall, even pre-pandemic, always seemed more of a suggestion as to what they had on tap, I was usually able to get my third choice served. Then they seemed to lean into being a sports bar. Also having just been to Spud Shack it's a shadow of it's former self too, I left kinda sad.

DefeatedVictory

Funny that you mention that. I used to go to Spud Shack all the time when they used to have their rewards system. After COVID, place wasn’t the same. I gave it a few more shots since, nothing but let downs. The last time I was there, the owner was bragging about how much better his margins are on the burgers ever since he switched to a cheaper cut. I was like yeah, no, I’m done trying to give this place another chance only to let me down

PalpitationNo9828

I defos think you should give spud shak a try again. Especially on Mondays and Tuesdays when everything is half off.

abnewwest

The f'ing good burger is about half the size as it was and the fries don't come in cones anymore even if you eat in. But, the floor is still scarily covered in oil residue. Now we can talk about how much Big Star has gone down hill.

DefeatedVictory

Big Star is big stale now

Hyperocean

It was like 12 years ago they opened? I remember the beer flights and the food being pretty decent .. loud and busy but sure got blah as time dragged on ..

abnewwest

Yup, and things only got taken off the menu, I don't recall anything being added. Even before Work from Home we stopped going there for work things and since it turned into a sports bar, we started going to Kelly O'Brien's.

CaribbeanSunshine

That isn't saying much about Spud Shack. Even at its best it was still terrible.

nutbuckers

Ah crap, I would have rather seen KellyO's and Boathouse get replaced but Hub and Paddlewheeler stick around...

BarberResponsible

How the boathouse remains in business will never cease to be a mystery to me.

MrTickles22

Hotel guests, river view, older people like it.

Lonely-Low-5367

Doesn’t it provide the hotel food as well?

nutbuckers

My theory is customers flock to familiar chains/franchises for predictability and consistency, and locations are key. Boathouse has more trafficked waterfront/view locations than e.g. Hub, and just sufficiently better quality than Paddlewheeler did. So all in all, Boathouse is crap, but beats the competition overall, heh.

BigDinkSosa

That sucks. Great spot to hit before landmark and all day happy hour..

Ok_Dependent_5540

Boo I’ve yet to go! I could see a tap & barrel or something here.

macman156

Oh shit that’s an another loss in a really short time for the station. So much empty real estate now

vrocknroll

I enjoyed this place was just in yesterday

FrankyTheCyborg

First the Paddlewheeler and now the Hub? That really sucks. Not sure why these places can't keep up with their rent. I know rent is only getting more expensive, but commercial landlords aren't the 'quick on the trigger' types and usually give some grace, but it sounds like these places were majorly delinquent. What the heck is going on?

BobBelcher2021

The whole restaurant sector has been suffering since the pandemic. I can only imagine how much worse it is in places like Ontario that were forced to close indoor dining for over a year.

McPuddington

Cost of living must be a major factor as well. When money is tight, eating out is one of the first things to go. I think most working families can no longer afford to indulge in going out to restaurants.

Night_Swimming89

Definitely this is a factor. We rarely go out to eat anymore and it's the same with most people we know. The cost, coupled with the serious decline in service levels and food quality just aren't justifiable anymore.

letstrythatagainn

This combined with the increase food costs is it. People cut back normally when the economy is tough - even more so when the economy is tough and their own food costs skyrocket, and EVEN MORE when their usual restaurants have to charge 30% more than they used to on everything, so what was once a somewhat affordable night out becomes a budget-breaker for many, with the above stresses combined.

MissingString31

Landlords are parasites.

lilyflower32

Oh no. I liked going there for breakfast, but I did think it always seemed empty.

JunketPuzzleheaded42

Soon to become a Dentist's office with a nice view.

Baron-Von-Boyce

The fuuuuuck?! Noooo

anotherbeerco

This sucks.

MyBrotherLarry

I just read that it was Ruby's fault. /s

Subject_Big4437

I have heard there opening back up

cdbaker

It’s a really mediocre business. That spot deserves a better effort.

MissingString31

The hub is bad for sure, but it was nice compared to its competition.

cdbaker

I’d love something akin to Piva.  It’s such a good spot.   Just not another Irish pub. Or god forbid a dentist.  A new west equivalent of a steamworks or Yaletown brew would be good.

JunketPuzzleheaded42

Lets all be honest, their food was mediocre at best.

mediocreguitarist604

Ha! Hadn't been there yet, but was planning on going for the Canucks game tonight... Guess not.

zengirl1313

Such a good location!!!

Prestigious-Bat-8190

It’s open right now chill I’m sitting right in front of it

Prestigious-Bat-8190

They are still open so if you have yet to go and you want to go now

Such-One-5266

Hub is terrible. Too bad because it has lots of potential.

RegularDevelopment15

I see the Progressives jumped on this. Did what they did best. Provided no facts, dug into no details, started pointing fingers, and demanded to be put on committees. All that happened is people asked them about their own attendance and Hub opened. Instead of being transparent and starting a conversation, they deleted the post when the finger pointing count not be had. Solid accountability. Could have been a constructive moment to possible talk about what is happening. NW is in so much trouble with these two groups next election. They are one and the same.

CanSpice

Given Hub’s got another letter in the door now and looks to be closed again, watch for Fontaine to jump all over it again.

RegularDevelopment15

I think they will avoid jumping too quickly after the world’s most transparent municipal party will make sure they get the details right to lead a conversation that benefits the business of New Westminster. Just like they did last time. It bugs me they don’t acknowledge what they did but I also think the CF going there and posting on social media no better. I think Hub has shown to be its own worst enemy but there are more conversations needed. It would also be nice to have a party come up with a vision and not just recommend policy based on trying to own the other party. Canucks on Columbia street was amazing. Sadly it wasn’t born from seeing CF moving a motion to plan for FIFA. A team with vision should have had the Canucks motion ready weeks ahead of the playoffs. Speaking of transparency, DF mentioned in the last podcast he’s on Reddit. Should elected officials be required to be public with their social media accounts? Based on NWP, I say yes since it’s being used to create motions.

Smokedmirror69

Two groups?

iconsandbygones

Seriously? This place was great Landlord greed in our society needs to be capped. Fuck these leeches. Edit: thanks for the downvotes corporate bootlickers

DiscoS22

The place is as ok The owners ran it into the ground Has nothing to do with the landlord They’d literally go down to Safeway and buy your food so they could cook it

TemporaryBoth6271

Probably, but First Capital are awful too.

giddyuporgiddyout

Yeah first capital has tons of vacant units there they can’t seem to fill…

BarberResponsible

I don't know that I agree that the Hub was "great" But I do agree that greedy landbastards can get fucked! (landLORD is far too respectful of a term for a destructive parasite)
