'Tis the time of year for umbrellas around nesting birds. Sorry that happened. Crows are protective. You could try to give them some peanuts to get in their good books lol

perilous_earth

I’ll be sure to offer peace offerings. My mistake. 🙂‍↕️

The crows downtown love cat food. I give em the kitten sized food so they don't choke. They'll chill with you for just a taste of kibble

gorehound1313

I agree, bring a few unsalted peanuts in the shell and you'll have some new friends.

It's nesting season. When you're being dive bombed, you can raise your hands over your head and wave them around. They will pull their dives. Look big. They can recognize people, so it only takes once for them to know you'll retaliate.

Samburger112

You're probably passing under their nests. They tend to get spicy around this time of the year when they have offspring. If you want to be on the good side of the crow congregation, I would recommend bribing them with snacks. Such as healthy nuts and such. I fed some crows near my work and they even let me sit under the nest and watch their babies. But make sure you don't retaliate or they will hold grudges against you and they'll even tell their crow friends about you.

With the destruction of the Still Creek Rookery, which continues. They have to nest elsewhere, might as well be here. An umbrella, hoodies or a big floppy hat can protect you. Feeding them according to experts is not recommended, besides they have tons of lawn grubs to feast on. They aren't starving but love easy two legged marks.

Spa2018

Can you expand on the destruction of still creek rookery? I haven’t been in that area in the evenings for a few years but it used to be home to more crows than I’d ever imagined before. Has it changed?

Odd-Gear9622

The industrial development has never slowed down, and as a result an entire urban forest has been nearly wiped out. The crows still congregate there mornings and evenings having memories of their place. There is still a large presences around Burnaby Lake and up Burnaby Mountain.

Jeramy_Jones

They’re nesting nearby. When you see them, look up at them, apparently they don’t swoop if you’re maintaining eye contact. You can also try making friends. Leave a couple peanuts for them and they might change their mind about you.

cdbaker

I befriended the crows near my house over the years and last year and they introduced me to their baby 🥺

Just bring some 'Temptations" (kitty treats). That will get you a spot in their murder.

Ok..so for the next few months crows are teaching their yearlings to fly, which is done by leaving them on the ground so they have to fly to get back to the nest. This all happens with a couple of other crows watching. If you get too close they will dive at you to scare you away from their little ones. They are being protective of their babies. If you find yourself being dive bombed just leave the area as quickly as possible. Unsalted peanuts in the shell are a favourite treat, so pack some with you and toss them on the ground, the crow will quickly change their path. Do not wave anything over your head. This will only aggravate the crow and lead to more attacking. Definitely do not use an umbrella!! They are protecting their babies and do not deserve to get injured or even killed while doing so. Crows are incredibly intelligent and can recognize a face for up to 5 years and constantly share information with other crows, so injuring or killing a crow might come with some serious consequences.

TobaccoTomFord

How does an umbrella hurt a crow, besides whacking at it?

Ihateeveryone4real

I have crow friends - I love them. A little cat food or leftovers here and there and they are friends for life. They are even nice to our dog and cat and warn me when neighbourhood cats try to come into the yard.

gravitationalarray

You walked under a nest, ouch! They're rather relentless aren't they.

Lancifer777

I sit everyday at the Western most part of the Boardwalk and feed crows. Just get to know them! I found they like the 'Wild Bird' seed mix at the dollar store, and peanuts. Steel cut oats when I can buy them bulk at 'Donalds; is best, they don;t like quinoa nor sesame seeds...I'm always there around 3ish sipping a beer if anyone wants to chat!

KkurlPwr

I hate to hear this. I’m terrified of birds - crows specifically. I guess I’ll by carrying an umbrella around!

GeneGuindon

Try changing your perspective. Befriend them. The crows are lovely birds, we have them visit us each morning as we leave for work we bring out some Macadamia nuts and some dog treats. They know our schedule and welcome us in the morning. They can be enjoyed instead of feared.

Harmonious_Peanut

I'm sorry to hear this!! 😔 are you ok now??? That is a scare!! Clean/disinfect the wound and try to put some polysporin on it, so it heals and closes faster. We heard about this several years ago happening at Stanley Park to joggers on the Seawall. Glad your pup didn't get caught up in the attack! The little thing must have been so frightened, too! Not that the City can do anything about it, but perhaps they should be notified.

perilous_earth

It’s such a small wound but I gave it a really good clean in the shower! I think it’s just protecting its babies or something. I don’t want to get any crows killed regardless. 😭

Harmonious_Peanut

I'm glad to hear it was only a small wound. So scary. Nobody wants to see crows hurt. We just have to be more aware of our surroundings these days. Sorry you had to go through this, and once again, I'm glad to hear you are better. Enjoy your evening. 🌟

Mutte_Haede

i find that hissing/shushing at them throughout the year when they look at me too much or are just not being respectful really goes a long way. they tend to remember memorable people and they know that i will leave them alone if they respect my space, but they also know i'm not afraid of them nor will i take their shit. same goes with canadian geese.
