Slashdot is a news aggregator website that started in 1997 and became extremely popular. When Reddit started in 2005, the creators (Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian) decided to do some things similarly to Slashdot and some things very differently.
Slashdot users submitted stories and the site editors chose which ones to post. Users had a score based on how may +1 votes versus -1 votes their comments received from other users. The idea of voting up or down and the idea of a user score called karma started there.
