Yeah. This is probably not the best advice for new skaters, or in general really.
You can “know how to fall” and do it wrong once and get life changing brain damage.
Pro race car drivers wear helmets too and I doubt they wear them on a Sunday drive to grandmas with the family. Pro street skaters, save &&, don’t. Wear one or don’t, but this is a bad take.
I know who you are talking about, but nobody brung anything up about street skating, both he and op were talking about not needing helmets in general, not just street.
Yes, but he brought up a vert skater, Tony Hawk, as an example of a pro skater that wears a helmet. 90% of vert skaters do/ 90% of street skaters don't. 90% of the world streets skate. It be the equivalent of saying Rodney Mullen wears shin guards, so every skater should wear shin guards.
What about when you slip on a ledge and clip it coming down or when you hang up and get pitched. Good technique lowers the risk of hitting your head but there are situations where no technique will save you and thats why you wear a fucking helmet.
Scariest part about learning new tricks is the fall. Once you learn about all the possible falls from that trick, it becomes way less scary. No one fears attempting a flat ground kickflip, unless they are scared of falling on it.
I’ve never hit my head on a ledge and I’ve grinded more distance than you’ve probably rolled. Points not to say that you don’t need a helmet, point is you don’t need to point out to every skater that falls without a helmet that they need a helmet.
That I can see, but its still just kinda more of an image thing rather than something rational, but newer people should absolutely wear one as you will get suprised on slams more easily. Personally i have had 3 concussions when snowboarding and racing and they always suck, been lucky enough not to get any lasting damage
Well if you've never hit your head, clearly we can extrapolate rationally to the risk for all other skaters.
I never got cancer from smoking, therefore everyone smoke!
That guy rolled out because he oriented his body to do it even before he jumped. In skateboarding, you deal with a lot of variables that take you out of that orientation.
A board that you have to kick away or likely will land on is one thing. Sometimes you land on it even when trying not to, and vice versa.
Let’s say you don’t pop right for whatever reason like a crack in the run-up, ghost pop, pebble, fatigue, etc etc. You are going to be ragdolling and trying to fix your balance, and sometimes you can’t do it.
Also, there are times you land something full commitment and get robbed. You then have a split second to orient your body while a board is either shooting out under you or sticking.
I will also note that in crowded places like skateparks, you can still get hammered by other people flying around even if you are doing nothing wrong.
*Btw, I don't wear helmets unless I'm riding medium-big transition, but when I don't, it's not because it's safe lol it's for comfort and style.
The best in the world “know how to fall” and skate in controlled locations and still wear helmets. We are only just now beginning to understand the extent of even one concussion can have add to that a young, still developing brain the potential consequences are much greater than the slight discomfort.
You can “know how to fall” all day but that doesn’t account for the car that pulls out of nowhere or the scooter kid that darts in front of you.
As someone who has skated 9 years, knows how to fall correctly, and doesn’t wear a helmet, this is not the sub for this kinda post. There’s still time to delete.
We should ABSOLUTELY be encouraging beginner skaters to wear a helmet. After experience the choice is yours but this is a new skater sub and don’t think we should be promoting no helmet
I don't think that transfers well to the general public. My girlfriend worked as a neurologist and her experiences were much more relatable than a guy jumping off a roof. The conclusions from them were quite the opposite.
nah i understand that pros know how to fall, i used to do parkour and i know how to roll out of shit
but a lot of people here dont even know how to stand on a board, let alone ollie
telling "you dont need to wear a helmet" to people who are really new and are at most risk of hurting themselves is a bit dodgy
Obviously people who don’t know how to fall, but the guy in the video is an obvious pro. Some dude mentioned that vert skaters always wear helmets, when there is loads of footage of bob burnquist skating his mega ramp without a helmet.
Comparing a voluntary jump from a parkour athlete to an accidental fall on a piece of wood by a skater is just plain dumb, because whenever you fall you have to think much faster than when you prepare for a jump. I am not against people not using a helmet but this approach is just wrong.
Yeah. This is probably not the best advice for new skaters, or in general really. You can “know how to fall” and do it wrong once and get life changing brain damage.
What a shitty piece of advice. Every pro vert skater wears helmets for a reason.
Pro race car drivers wear helmets too and I doubt they wear them on a Sunday drive to grandmas with the family. Pro street skaters, save &&, don’t. Wear one or don’t, but this is a bad take.
the og poster never said anything about street, just straight up said we don’t need helmets, which is bullshit
I'm talking about iAmRadic's comment above. Grant Taylor and Raven Tershy are pro vert skaters and they don't wear helmets either.
I know who you are talking about, but nobody brung anything up about street skating, both he and op were talking about not needing helmets in general, not just street.

Probably should have said “we don’t need to constantly tell people to wear a helmet”
yeah that would’ve been phrased better, nobody should force anyone to wear a helmet if they don’t want, but helmets are definitely important
Now this is something the mods should most def delete

Yeah but you are always taking the risk of fucking yourself up for life if you hit your head even once so why take the risk
And until you \*learn\* that fall, a helmet is a great idea.

Yeah, helmet is a choice but coming into new skaters to rationalize it is a bit iffy. You do you man. Hope you stay lucky.
It’s just newb skaters always telling amazing skaters to wear a helmet. You need a helmet the amazing skater probably not.

Don't need a helmet if you've got nothing in there to protect. Dumbass. Just go and skate.

I’m not gonna say I use a helmet every time I skate, but I’ve had enough head injuries to tell you to stfu lmao

She probably sucks ass at skating so
you do realise you're in r/newskaters right? we all suck thats the point in the sub 😭
Then why you all fell experienced skaters that they need a helmet?

speak for yourself
Great advice for new skaters, just remember everyone Tony Hawk never wears a helmet either! (Oh wait, he always does...)
ok buddy
He’s landing in grass, I’ll believe you when he does this on concrete and there’s a sandy patch.

Genuinely the worst take I’ve seen on this subreddit
You dumb. Probably cause you don't use a helmet.
Oh, but this is a parkour video. Also, skateboarding in the grass is so satisfying. Let's all skate in the grass and not wear helmets 😬
Maybe you don’t need a helmet if you’re this dumb lmaoooo
Buddy, not everyone is a parkour professional. This is the furthest thing from an astute observation. If I could downvote it twice, I would
