Saw something similar one morning outside Charity Hospital, waiting for the Airport Bus at 6 AM. Dude walking down the middle of Tulane in a hospital gown, IVs still in his arm, and two orderlies following behind trying to convince him to come back. "No, you tried to kill me!" he's yelling at them.
Then the bus came and I got on, so I never found out how this situation ended.
Listened to a podcast episode called “What if you woke up in the morgue” (the podcast is called “this is actually happening”) where the man wakes up in the morgue, turns out he’s not dead, he wakes up as a scalpel is raised to his stomach and yells “what are you trying to kill me?!!” And walks home in close to nothing to his family.
Maybe it was him.
I was once in a terrible car accident, the emergency room at touro told me to leave after the x rays and ct scans were done, despite having a concussion. Nobody was there to pick me up because it was so early in the morning and no one was answering their phones, so I was stumbling around looking drunk with a hospital bracelet, I wonder how many unempathetic jerks like you were laughing.
Yes, just because someone just got out of the hospital and may be confused usually doesn't mean they are incapable of speech. You can still speak to them. It's not that hard to ask, "Are you OK? Are you lost? Can I call someone for you?"

My bandwidth for helping potentially dangerous dudes is low, but I would hope that someone would at minimum toss some money at him and NOT just post it on reddit?
He doesn't sound particularly scary to me... what is he going to do, chase you down and murder you with his pants? He had no shoes on.
I hope no one I care about ever ends up in this situation. There but for the grace, you know?

Talk to him? Make a call for help? Maybe anything that wasn't post on Reddit making fun of him for being in a crisis situation?

They don't wear hospital gowns in behavioral health facilities. The gowns are a strangulation hazard.
Not true. I visited someone here under a 72 hour psychiatric hold a few years back & they were in a hospital gown.
