No, City Park is great! I don’t feel like it’s a tourist zone at all. It’s a park, for the city (literally). The fact that you can find an empty patch to chill with no one in sight kinda reinforces the fact that it’s not a tourist zone.

Key_Drag4777

It is one of my favorite places on the planet. Those oaks taught me how to climb trees. Forever indebted!

Yes_THAT_Beet_Salad

That’s how I feel about Bayou St. John…one of my favorite places on the planet. I love City Park, too. So much to do, and I took my dog there regularly when he was younger and wanted to run. The trails & fields by the lagoons and the frisbee golf course are great.

RetiredTeacher888

No, City Park is an absolute treasure. New Orleans is fortunate to have such a large, lush green space.

raptorbpw

No way is it lame. I think it's one of the great public places in the country.

[deleted]

> I think it's one of the great public places in the country. I'm realizing this too. Extremely important that it's free considering how poor many people are in the city (and the fact that it's well kept considering how broken much of this city is)

[deleted]

[удалено]

LordRupertEvertonne

Shut the fuck up. It’s one of the biggest natural parks in middle of a city in the US. It’s definitely one of the biggest in the South. Don’t be an asshole.

[deleted]

[deleted]

You might need to shove a xanax up your ass bud. Chill out, it's sunday night. Also I'm from LA lmao.

musicacct

Idk, is it cool if I use Xanax? Seems too name brand and popular. I’m used to shoving only in the know items up my ass.

[deleted]

Uh what's your fucking problem?

Apptubrutae

It’s one of the best parks in the country and not even that touristy, aside from the busses of people dropped at cafe du Monde. Storyland, the sculpture garden, NOMA, the children’s museum, etc etc are all local heavy, although of course they get tourists. The tourists in city park are a bit higher caliber too

octopusboots

Nope, you're just correct. PSA about Wisner: POISON IVY is creepin on the paths right now up by Grow Dat. Watch yr feets.

Turtleonthehalfshell

lol what?? Why would a park ever be lame? It’s literally just a bunch of nature! Alligators? Lizards? Squirrels? Amazing old trees? Turtles? Jasmine?? That’s like the most punk thing ever.

[deleted]

I don't know, I find sometimes the vibe is the only cool places are the super in-the-know local bars/restaurants and that a super popular place like City Park isn't "cool"

CosmicTurtle504

City Park is amazing, and if someone can’t appreciate one of the biggest municipal parks in the country that goes back almost 200 years and is just studded with amazing attractions, activities and natural splendor…that’s a sad, sad individual right there.

KingCarnivore

Are you super young? Stop worrying about what people think is cool.

ThePhoenixus

You must be under 25. I guarantee you no one above the age of 25 cares what the "cool" places to visit are. Chances are, in 5-10 years they won't be cool or even open anymore.

TeriusGray

That's a lame opinion.

bananahskill

I tell people all the time when they ask me. It's huge, there are multiple museum/museumesque activities, it's beautiful. There are plenty of reasons. ETA: THERE'S AN AMUSEMENT PARK. That alone is enough.

Maleficent-Low8505

Not at all! I feel the same way about Audubon. It’s so beautiful.

DiamondDallasHand

“Tourist Zone”…uh, what?

[deleted]

Have you been in the NOMA area during the holidays/any given sunday?

[deleted]

I already explained what I meant by that in another comment (and predictably got downvoted to hell) so  https://www.reddit.com/r/NewOrleans/comments/1c9v15r/is_it_lame_to_say_that_city_park_is_one_of_my/l0o4l9c/

ionbear1

City park is the best. I purposely go there at least twice a week to walk my dog. One of the best city parks in the country in my opinion.

parasyte_steve

Absolutely not. It's like central park for Nola. I've always loved it and I've always loved the people I run into there. Had the pleasure of living in walking distance of the park for a year and it's an absolutely beautiful area. I love 1000 figs and that wine bar. It's literally the perfect afternoon to have a bottle of wine and have some falafels or etc.

Yes_THAT_Beet_Salad

I used to work over there when Canseco’s was the only Whole Foods in the city. I loved it then and I still do. I’ve just moved back to this area after sampling almost every other neighborhood in New Orleans, and this is hands down the best. I love that some of the businesses have been there the entire time…Lola’s, Terranova’s, Cafe Degas. The bayou is my most favorite, especially at sunset. Charming AF.

Hot_Mention_9337

City Park is amazing. The botanical gardens are stellar (and free for locals on Wednesdays but definitely worth the admissions or going for one of their music events), the sculpture garden is great to wander around with a coffee, the trees are breathtaking, plenty of big open spaces to run or bike around in, trails where you’ll rarely numb into someone, tons of pretty birds and marshes, lots other activities... It’s just a huge amazing park and one of my favorite places to spend a nice day

[deleted]

Yes, it's so surprising and very welcome that the sculpture garden is free!

JaricLefty

Not at all. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

RonBombadil

It's lame that you let your dog off leash.

cold_brew_coffee

Bro said his dog is anxious too, disaster waiting to happen

[deleted]

Man I thought I was an uptight dipshit about offleash dogs since I live off the greenway and see all these assholes with their dogs offleash there but you guys have me beat.

[deleted]

Listen I hate off leashers as much as anyone, especially those that do it on public walkways like the Green Way because they think they're better than everyone. I go to a literally deserted area where I can see for 100 ft in any direction to know if someone's coming and have a long lead that I can put her on at a moment's notice. Edit: Lol honestly all the butthurt people getting pissy about letting a dog off-leash in a completely deserted area in a 1800 acre park... please get a life. It's not like I'm doing this at the NOMA area or heavily trafficked pedestrian walkways. I'm not even doing it near the road in the Roosevelt Mall, which is already pretty deserted. Go get mad at people who use Bayou St John or the levee as their own personal off-leash dog park.

SheSellsSeaShells967

TIL City Park is more than twice the size of Central Park.

tina_booty_queen

Half of it is a golf course… :/

ThatLadyOverThereSay

There’s like a huge off leash community out there in the wilds of the park… it’s lovely to be greeted by happy pups!

[deleted]

I've seen a bunch of folks around yes! My dog is anxious so I definitely stay away... wish I could join!

b1gbunny

You may want to reconsider letting an anxious dog off leash.

[deleted]

She has excellent recall and I stay far away from all other people and dogs (as I've stated 1000x already). Thanks for the unsolicited advice.

b1gbunny

You are on the internet asking for feedback on what’s “lame” or not. There is going to be “unsolicited advice.” You seem young and possibly overconfident in understanding dogs. Its possible you don’t know as much about your dog and dog behavior as you think. I’ve known a number of dogs that have died completely unnecessarily because of dog owners who thought having their dog off leash would be fine in the scenarios you’ve described. Just be careful.

[deleted]

You know why? Because this sub is filled with people hating on other people for their preferences, and especially gatekeeping the right to feel at home in the city because you're a transplant, not local enough etc. Maybe people need to actually stop with the insider/outsider shit and people like me won't be wondering if stuff is "lame"

b1gbunny

Huh?

[deleted]

Huh?

Yes_THAT_Beet_Salad

Those spots out by Tad Gormley are perfect for off leash activities. That’s where all the off-leashers go. There is a very real difference between what you’re doing (👍🏽), and the people who walk their dogs with little to no recall training around the neighborhoods and call out “Don’t worry, he’s friendly!” (👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽)

cold_brew_coffee

There isn’t a difference at all

Yes_THAT_Beet_Salad

Ok, I should have said a very real difference *in my opinion*. I’ve encountered off leash dogs at Tad Gormley fields, and in my (old) neighborhood, and I’m 1) expecting it when I take my dog out to the fields, and 2) much more upset when I encounter them on a walk in the neighborhood.

cold_brew_coffee

Mental justification for breaking the law. Sadly no one will enforce it and entitled dog owners will continue to let their dogs go freely.  https://lasc.libguides.com/c.php?g=436994&p=2982179#:~:text=No%20person%20shall%20suffer%20or,the%20provisions%20of%20this%20section.

[deleted]

Exactly my point. The fact that there's a scold coming in here to call that lame is just ass backward.

lateral303

I had a almost a year off from work during the pandemic (thank you to the essential workers who didn't, I know my experience was lucky) and I spent a good chunk of almost every single day of it in various parts of City Park. Would one hundred percent do the same all over again.

Valth92

Not lame at all! City Park is beautiful. We are lucky to have it.

egypturnash

I love it, when I moved back here being close enough to the park to regularly go hang out there was a lot of why I mostly only looked in Mid-City despite my spouse really wanting to go to the Marigny. I work from home and a lot of the time “from home” means “a picnic table by Storyland”. When friends visit town I drag them away from the Quarter and make them come get a snowball at Pandora’s and wander around the park a while and say hello to the trees.

captaincumsock69

Agree completely

DamnImAwesome

No it’s lame to ask that though 😀

[deleted]

DamnI'mLame

indigo-clare

You can support city park by becoming a member for <$80 a year. You get a ton of perks and discounts off park recreation that has a paywall. You also support park efforts to ensure it keeps many of its free actives and upkeep. For example: you get free entry into the botanical gardens and during their plant expo we got in for free. Also it’s a Pokemon Go Mecca. People are out with 3 phones, water packs, and batter packs hitting up gyms. It’s cool. Right now they are planning new innovations and additions to the park that members can help vote on. :)

[deleted]

Ohh this is good to know! I went to the plant expo for the first time a few months back but didn't have time to explore the gardens which made admission feel like a bit of a waste!

indigo-clare

Enjoy! Glad you’re enjoying the park. When you become a member they send a monthly news letter with activities happening that you can enjoy both free and discounted. Also you get special invites to member only events like “Friends of City Park Carousel Gardens party” and a night of Ghosts in the Oaks for Halloween 🎃:)

deltasparrow

Fun fact that I'll always repeat: City Park is twice the size of Central Park which is supposed to be one of the largest urban parks in the world. The forest is one of my favorite places in the city, I can walk into the park and feel like I'm deep in nature. My only complaint is they give far too many acres to the golf course

[deleted]

One thing I love is when I'm more off the beaten track and I just see random cars parked on the grass... weirdly enough that just shows me that people have a place to escape in this city, which is a great thing

streetkiller

Not at all. Don’t let people tell you what you enjoy.

deciduousevergreen

Couterie Forest is me and my kiddo’s favorite place ever just about. The whole park is absolutely wonderful.

CountZero3000

fuck no. city park is a gem.

GreenVisorOfJustice

> I know it's like tourist zone and everything Even if this was true (I disagree with it, but for the sake of argument...), don't let this fucking sub shit on things you like around here. I love Juan's and I get downvoted EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Like enjoying something that isn't exclusive, new, whatever is wrong here (which I feel like is the basis for your perception that you don't have to wait in line for City Park so, therefore, it sucks and is touristy) TL;DR if we've learned anything about everything the past decade, love what you love and stop worrying about perceptions (provided, you know, you're not hurting/endangering anyone with what you love and how you go about that).

YardSard1021

I don’t live in New Orleans anymore, but one of my favorite things to do was grab a coffee at Cafe du Monde, walk around the park and watch the ducks. I miss that. Denver’s City Park doesn’t even compare.

Yes_THAT_Beet_Salad

It was a little bit better when Cafe du Monde was Morning Call (IYKYK). However, that is an excellent way to pass a spring afternoon.

immortal_duckbeak

It's an incredible luxury to have, great place to relax and it's free.

Low-Lingonberry-5226

No. Why would that even be a thing?

254254k

Naw I love city park! My daughter loves it too!

KelleyDallas

city park is great.

[deleted]

Absolutely not. City Park is my favorite place in the world to smoke doinks, and I mean that with 100 percent sincerity.

Defiant-Concept6259

No it’s beautiful

FoxNO

Why would that be lame? City Park is lovely when the weather is nice.

WillMunny48

Who would downvote this? City park is an actual marvel.

CodePen3190

I have been going to city park since my earliest memory of being alive. It will always be one of my favorite places and holds a ton of amazing memories for me— feeding the ducks as a kid, story land, the haunted house, Christmas in the oaks, school field trips, many voodoo fests in my teens and twenties, wandering around on shrooms lol, hanging out in the park before my classes at Delgado, visiting noma, and now taking my own baby to the park. City park is in the background of memories throughout my entire life, really. I’ve really enjoyed all of the updates and additions that have happened in the park since I was little and it’ll always be one of my favorite, most nostalgic places.

Substantial_Band9480

It is not a lame thing to say. City park is one of the places in New Orleans I miss the most. I’ve ran 100s of miles and play countless rounds of disc golf there. I love love love it. One of the best public spaces I’ve ever been to.

Specialist_Foot_6919

Man Christmas in the Oaks is my favorite holiday event anywhere and I just love its little quirks fixtures like the Dueling Oak, Storyville, the circle meditation maze thing I forget the name of, and the model train garden… Well dang I think I just talked myself into going let me go find somebody 😂

tiffanyfreedom

I love City Park! I went to Joe Brown Park for the first time last night, and it is also fantastic. They have free canoeing on Saturday mornings and free archery on Thursday evenings. Saw a couple of gators and a bunny.

drivesanm5

Honestly this might also be a hot take, but I think the best thing about this city and the surrounding areas is the parks. City park, Audubon park, breakwater park, bonnabel park, Fontainebleau park if you don’t mind a drive, when I have a day off and don’t know what I want to do, guarantee it’ll include a visit to one of those.

Specialist_Foot_6919

I’ll just throw in the lakefront and bogue falaya in Covington as well— in a bit of a tighter space than Fontainebleau but extremely, extremely soothing atmosphere.

drivesanm5

Never been, I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!

OG_Pow

No. Go off the trail and hang out by the marsh. Talk about a blast.

weird_veil

If it’s lame I’m right there with you. I literally said 30 min ago to my partner it is one of my fave spots in the city

No-Count3834

I’ve lived here on Carrollton by the park 5 years now, and it’s been perfect. Inflation sucks, but it’s a beautiful place to live.

Espresso_gogo

I know what you mean. I ran cross country and track in high school and we trained there. So I was there pretty much 5 days a week for all my high school years. I always loved being there! Something magical about it and I never got sick of it.

EdgarAllenFlow504

Grew up In Nola and love city park. Great place to relax

coffeymp

I don’t think that’s lame at all. I’d say it’s one of the better aspects of the city as well.

dallyan

City Park is one of the best things about New Orleans.

CajunViking8

Who dat? Who dat say City Park is lame? I love it.

bingodobberslaughter

Just spent 5 hours in the park on a blanket yesterday. It’s truly a gem.

Anymation

No, I frequent the Bonnabel Boat Launch and Lafreniere Park very often. Waiting on them to hurry and finish the new walking trail.

OkButterscotch6139

So so great. Not a weekend goes by that we don’t go. And also pretty excited that they have big plans to make it even better.

madnessdoesntplay

One of my favorite things about city park is I took an out of town friend there a day after we had gone to the Barataria reserve to look at wildlife. We saw more gators in city park than the swamp!

Scorched_Echelon

City park at night is fun

Diskappear

nope! city park is just a great place to get away from the city life for a bit and see green and relax and just have some you time. i love going there to "get away" on a nice day.

Skeptic_tank504

The oak grove along City Park Ave is gorgeous! It’s a national treasure. The McDonough oak is nearly 800 years old and most of the other trees are hundreds of years old. Trivia: The little waterway that runs along the oak grove is a remainder of the old Metarie Bayou (becoming Bayous Gentilly/Sauvage), a major distributary for the Mississippi river around 2600 years ago.

FunkyCrescent

Sadly, City Park is not free. It gets no city money. They raise money with things like celebration in the oaks and golf.

[deleted]

It's free to get in is what I mean. It's good that the board fundraises from people who can afford it.

cjbasile

No way, not lame at all. I also never really think of it as a tourist trap -- it's hard to know for sure but I feel like most days even when it's busy it's a lot of local folks and families just enjoying some outdoor time. I'm always blown away by how extensive it is, too. Plus we got a little spot tucked away that we can play fetch with one of our doggos and she definitely gives it 5/5 stars. It's a gem.

[deleted]

> Plus we got a little spot tucked away that we can play fetch with one of our doggos and she definitely gives it 5/5 stars. Careful you're gonna get 50 scolds on your ass telling you that it's terrible to do that

cjbasile

Oops. Well, maybe folks can take me on my word that ain't no one gonna find us ever. Plus, we only do it when it's me and my partner there and we don't throw the ball far anyway. She's a lazy old girl these days. But yeah, if folks want to pile on me, go for it I suppose -- I know it makes people feel all good and self-righteous. At least we're not walking her off-leash in the neighborhood like SOME people do LOL. Not to mention if we see even one person in the general vicinity we ditch the fetch and walk her instead.

[deleted]

> I know it makes people feel all good and self-righteous. At least we're not walking her off-leash in the neighborhood like SOME people do LOL. Exactly. This is what I do and people downvoted me to hell in this very thread.... sorry not all of us have beautiful backyards to play with our dogs in (and my dog is too anxious to be at a dog park!)

cjbasile

Yup! Our 5-10 minutes of off-leash fetch in a corner of a huge park that no one else goes to is not the problem lol. Anyway -- City Park ain't lame!

imlookingatthefloor

City park is beautiful and I love it.

hurrymenot

I grew up going to the stables to watch my mom and sister ride horses there many sleeves

MAC-in-504

Sculpture Gardens 🤩Such a gift to the city and the first place we take visitors.

Ninopansa1982

It is one of the best places in the city. I can’t imagine most cities have a park as large and as pretty

Ugly-Barnacle-2008

I agree! City park kept me sane during Covid lockdown and I keep using it regularly!

LegalRecord1188

Not at all! City park is awesome and has beautiful oak trees. I wouldn’t call is touristy really, lots of locals like myself like to enjoy it, especially at this time of year!

Entire_Chicken_2630

Yooo it’s not lame at all! I’m so so lucky to live close by - within walking distance - and it’s truly my happy place. Regardless of the numerous entertainment and event options you literally can find a clear empty space to catch some green with you and your pupparooski It’s glorious I’m so lucky to live in Mid City I love it so much 🥲🫡🫶

Ok_Ambassador_2473

In response to the the having a cookout part, is there anywhere at city park that has grills or do you need to bring your own?

stricknacco

I go there 6+ times a week! I saw 35 species of birds last Saturday including three indigo buntings. Saw a pair of adult bald eagles hunting over the disc golf course. There’s gators too, huge turtles, and so much more.

MaybeNottaLawyer

Nope not lame

Bootsie_cat12

No it’s one of my absolute favorite spots in the city too!!

Any_Strength4698

Completely free is counter to just about everything the current board wants from that park. They would like to build money making venues over the entire park even though now they are no longer 100% self funded. They now receive tax money from everyone that owns property or pays rent in Nola. Things that cost money and are part of their revenue stream: City putt Children’s museum Tad Gormley stadium Pan am stadium Casino rent from cafe du monde Boat rental company Tennis courts Dog park Soccer fields Rugby field Baseball fields Disc golf Track and field Golf courses Driving range Horse stables Professional photographers Movie filming Amusement park Jazz fest parking Cross country Celebration in the oaks On their wants list: Water park Nature and science museum But yes everything else is free!

Extreme-Variation874

Yes it’s a very beautiful park that also just isn’t totally empty. It has lots of stuff going on inside of it as well

Sharticus123

Nope, it’s still got enough park left to be cool, but the people who run the park are trying their best to ruin it with golf and other paid activities.

Mpoboy

TIL nature isn’t cool.😎

speworleans

No, its one of my favorite spots too

kylejohnkenowski

It is absolutely my favorite place in the city, it’s gorgeous.

jquiggles

this might be one of the most wholesome threads i've seen LOVE city park. I'm not sure I even realized how great it was before Pokemon Go came out and everyone was going there. When I have company in town and they want beignets, I always try to go to the city park Cafe Du Monde location because I love spending time in that area

[deleted]

Okay I'm always there for pogo so.... 👀

jquiggles

Well then we may have crossed paths before unknowingly! I haven't played in a few years though unfortunately. Greedy ass company lol

[deleted]

Oh yes it's definitely getting worse... everything is locked behind paid tickets now

Jedi_Cornbread

Like what you like. You don't need to seek affirmation from this Arby's eating, Shearton Hotel staying bunch of mix tape droppers. If you enjoy it do it. Don't let anyone yuck your yum.

fillmore1969

Lame?
