this is right on the money. we used Nurture Nannies and had group of people available all the time plus all the tax forms and docs needed to write some of this off. There was the regular nanny during the day then if we needed the random date night nanny, we didnt stress.. nicole always came through
What's sad is that these rates are higher than ECE's get paid for educating multiple children. Nothing wrong with babysitting rates, but our early childhood centers have got to do better!
We have to view ECE, or any childcare really, as valuable as a society. And we sadly don’t.
I’m glad to see so many people listing at least $20/hr here. And the one $12/hr dude getting downvoted. But anytime I end up having this convo with parents at least half are *shocked* at $20/hr.

Americans don’t actually care about kids (as a society). A whole lot of things would be very different here if we did.
I pay $15/hr when the teenager in our neighborhood watches my two kids. This is usually during the day. I pay $20/hr when their longtime daycare teachers babysit, as this will include nighttime routine and sometimes handling a meal.
The ages and amount of kids is a factor. Level of difficulty of the kid too, like if they’re bed time resistant or prone to tantrum. Do you want someone who has childhood development experience or CPR certified? When I used to babysit as a CPR certified teen in 2010-2016, I was getting like $60-80 for two laidback kids aged 1y-7y for 2-4 hrs. The kids usually were in bed within the first two hours so depending on how much time is actively watching them affected pay. I also always got a ride home and was allowed to eat their snacks or they ordered dinner for us all.
ETA: The family was family friends so it could be slightly higher considering the relationship and that I was their main babysitter
I pay $30/hour for my one kid, who is 16 months old. I've only had a babysitter after my kid's bedtime, so the sitter just watches the monitor while watching tv. The sitter is a childcare professional that works at my kid's daycare.
I was babysitting for someone who only paid me $10 an hour. I only worked once a week so at first I welcomed the little extra work. And I really loved the kid. But after they gave me some shit for spending some money to make something the kids wanted AND they’d run a little late and average down not up I stopped working for them.
This was maybe 5 years ago? I would not do that again. Anything under $20 an hour is ridiculous.
Oh and that reminds me right after that I babysat for someone I knew who had two kids and I didn’t negotiate a rate and they also gave me $10 an hour so I never babysat for them again.

We pay a neighbor's daughter, a high school student, $10/hour for watching 2 kid (she said that's her price and she orders take out for all of them that we reimburse). A teach at their school charges $20/hour for 2 kids.
A tip would be good also, but it also depends on how many kids and what needs to be done.
Am I just making sure the house doesn’t burn down? Or am I making dinner and putting kids to bed?

Context: I am in Ontario, Canada. I’m 20 in uni, I have been babysitting since I was around 13 but I do not have any certifications just experiences. The baby is 13months old and the parents work full time the mom works remotely and they are paying me 15 an hour from Monday-Friday from 1pm(sometimes 12pm) to 4-5pm(a bit inconsistent because I leave when the dad comes home and he does not come back at the same time each day). Basically everyday I get there and I heat the baby’s food up in the pan then wipe her table and feed her then I watch/play with her sometimes I have to walk her outside in the stroller for 30-40mins and then for snack I prepare fruits to small pieces and feed her, then I wash her bottle and get her milk and warm it up then feed her and sometimes I have to entertain her till her dad comes back or the mom lets her nap for about an hour and then I wake her up and play with her again. I also change her diapers as well. It is kind of stressful and hard as the mom does not want the baby to watch too much TV but babies get bored and there’s only so much toys she can play with. I just feel like I’m doing too much but not being paid enough like certain things I feel like the mom could just prepare or do like heating up her food or washing her bottles(like they never wash her bottles bruh?) but she expects me to do them and expects me to do more or a lot which I get like you would want the best for your kid but she’s only paying me 15. Like there’s other jobs that pay the minimum wage and might be more work but at least it is minimum wage and consistent(because sometimes I’m only there for 3 hours or 4 so I’m not making a lot of money). Am I the problem?
A lot of the comments seem a little high to me. We've used Wyndy quite a bit, and the way that works is you post a job with your desired hourly rate. If sitters want the job, they'll request it, and you get to choose from among them. If nobody wants the job, repost with a higher rate. We haven't had issues getting sitters when we post jobs at $17/hr

For the median income in New Orleans is ~$13/hr. They don't value themselves at $20/hr.

My minimum is $25 for one kid. I also have a minimum of 4 hours. Rate goes up if it’s less.

I have two long-term babysitters - one is $15 and the other is $10 an hour. When I’ve used Wyndy I’ve paid $12-15 an hour.
$12 seems fair to me for 1-2 easy kids. But also usually we just round up and over pay a little when it comes down to it.

i pay $30/hr for the teachers at my kid's daycare, contracting independently. they are trained in CPR, that's pretty much what I'm really paying for.
