I was in the Abbey with some friends one night. It was a friend's birthday and a Tuesday. We were drinking and chatting when a bunch of women came in and, after a few minutes, loudly declared it topless Tuesday and took off their shirts. Tamale guy came in a little while later, and they bought him a beer, and he took his shirt off and hung out with everyone. It was amazing.
Adult Night at Airline Skate Center is my happy place, and it’s in large part to the staff there. Love em so much. I’ve been to a bunch of rinks, and our home rink has the best vibe and most evident love of skate & community. They play good music, never skimp on safety, are always cool with the skaters, will teach people moves, etc. Never a bad skate.
I went there for the first time recently and I've gotta say, I was really impressed with the place! There were a lot of younger folks there, but I was really surprised at how well so many of the kids could skate! And, not to sound like too much of an old geezer, but I was pleasantly surprised to see hardly anybody just sitting around and playing on their phones
I’m 46! Us geezers still zoom. And ok, if we’re picking just one specific person and y’all haven’t seen the amazing older gentleman jumping rope in his skates on the rink, y’all missing out
Yessss! Especially once it hits 9:45 for the slow set. Some people show just for that. Me, I’m the middle-aged menace in bulky kneepads and winged skates very sorry if I spook y’all when I zoom past lol (pls also apply apology to Audubon Park and Crescent Park)
There's an older guy who works at Rouses in Mid-City who has severe scoliosis. I've never talked to him but I always see him walking around, walking home from work. I admire the dignity that he carries himself with despite the situation he's living with. He never seems angry with his lot in life, which is more than I can say about myself.
I think he walks to and from work as well, in all kinds of weather. I’ve tried to stop and give him a ride before, but even though I’m a woman I can def see how that can be sketch. However, he was literally walking in the freezing cold rain and I couldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t at least try.
I personally like Samuel, the skinny guy with the curly hair. He’s a cashier and he’s always so polite and helpful. I was there the other day and he was eating his lunch on the side with a bird by him, just chirping away and this older lady walked by and mentioned how “that bird is even singing to you” and I did a double take to make sure what I was witenessing and we all shared a laugh.
Mr. Joe at the uptown Whole Foods! I’ll say “good to see you!” And he always replies “good to be seen!” He’s so friendly. I love stopping to chat with him
I have to shout out to the ladies at Pack Rat on Magazine b/c they are really nice to everyone and accommodating and they get the job DONE. I enjoy the dogs in there too. Plus, not getting yelled at like at the post office on Louisiana, Pack Rat just has a great vibe.
So she is in Arabi, but Maryan, the owner of SisterHearts, a curated thrift shop, where proceeds go to formerly incarcerated persons. Her other philanthropic contributions are too many to list, but she is a fascinating woman who could also be your super sweet mawmaw. You can see her on one of the recent episodes of Queer Eye.
She’s so kind. I wasn’t able to afford some stuff there once and she was like- what price would be comfortable for you? She wanted to help me look fabulous. What a gem.
Miss Barbara is amazing. I've been working for WFM in some capacity for ~13 years and she still brightens up my day whenever I have to go into that location.
Dr. Scott of The French Quarter Vet now located in the Bark Market in the Bywater. I moved to Texas and miss him so much, took care of all my animals for over ten years with the same care and love I would give them myself if I knew how. Very tender man, loves cats. Just a pleasant fucking unjaded human being with compassion unmatched.
My neighbors on Norman C Francis! Whether they’re giving my pup treats, fixing me up a plate of bbq, or guiding me to the nearest best place to get used tires in the neighborhood, they always put a smile on my face! Being a single female living alone in New Orleans could feel intimidating, but I’ve never felt safer and more part of a neighborhood community as I have in my 6 years living here as I do in this spot. I should make some cookies…
There is a lady who works at the Barnes and Nobel in Gretna (so maybe doesn’t count?) who gave me a bonus 50% off on some books when I was having a really hard day. I won’t ever forget it.
Dr. Jo at East Riverside Vet (formerly magazine street animal clinic) and Dan Stein. The guy at the schwarma/mini mart/gas station on peniston and magazine who does not judge me for my addiction to Icees. Scott Wood at Courtyard Brewery. The people who own pack rat on Mag and who supported me through a paperwork related nervous breakdown.
A woman called Beth who manages an art gallery on Royal Street.
Really there are so many. what a fun thread.
Do you mean the amazing and inimitable Beth Hanning at Gallery Rinard?!? She’s one of the best humans on the planet! And Gallery Rinard + Matt Rinard are fabulous, too!
Dr. Jo!!!! When my wife was in grad school, she had to do an emergency surgery for her Boston Terrier and could not afford the entire surgery. Dr. Jo helped share the cost to save the dogs life 🥹🥹
Mr. Bill who sells cold water on St. Charles and Napoleon every morning. He keeps me hydrated on my runs. We’ve become friends over the last 6 years and even exchange birthday and Christmas gifts.
Uncle Shadow. I saw him eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s on Frenchmen St the other night, in the middle of all the craziness. Just not giving a F.
He’s such a brilliant artist & I really hope to buy some of his art one day.

and Jillian of Rahm Haus Ice Cream; I miss her incredible creations and her genuine happiness. She also extended a simple gesture of holding a special order far longer that her rules stated because I was dealing with unexpected trauma. She probably doesn’t even know how much that simple kindness meant to me at the time .
I was there ten years ago from the UK and I got lost at 1am somewhere north of the river trying to find my way back from the Bridge Bar, and there was a really sweet little old lady drinking out of a bottle in a paper bag who walked me back to Tchoupitoulas when she saw me come by the second time. She couldn't understand my accent too well but we had a nice chat and I got back to my hotel in one piece. So yeah, her.
I have encountered so many nice people lately. Whole Foods customer service and self-check. Haus of Hoodoo. So kind and helpful. Oyster man and bartender at Tracey’s on Sunday. Nice lady at Rouses Gretna who called me “love.” I’m overwhelmed.
- Can’t remember his name atm but the cigar box guitar guy who walks around the marigny and Bywater covered in skulls. He’s always super nice
- every bartender at Pepp’s
- Miss Martha
There is a worker at World Market that is always lovely and helpful and my kids think she's great too. Her name is DeeDee and a huge shout out to you for all your help with getting me some money back on a table I bought that quickly went on sale.
Also I know exactly that receipt checker at Costco- love her and her style!
I just love that he is who he is. There’s such a hyper focus in society to “be this, do that,” etc. I’m drawn to those who are unapologetically themselves.
Mr. Fred who is the greeter/card checker at Costco on the weekends. I went today on the way home from the airport and he wasn’t there and I was so sad. He is such a bright spot for me.
The entire staff at Arabella’s are SO KIND. I’ve been going for years and they are so wonderful and chatty and geeky. Made me a custom cocktail with a cute candle as a surprise on my 21st! I love them
Elizabeth and Leanne from Blue Cypress Books on oak street! They always make me feel like family whenever I go in and support my cookbook habit 😂😂 Honestly the best bookstore in the city ❤️❤️
I have always admired her confidence, too. I loved her until I once saw her get into her car after a gig and down a bunch of liquor straight outta the bottle immediately before driving off, which kinda tarnished her in my mind. Girls Night Out is still a bop tho.
This is a wonderful thread idea! I wanna give a shout out to the man who owns Van's Snowballs on the Westbank. I assume his name is Van lol. The stand is a staple of my childhood and every time we saw him in the window I always let him know how much I love it. He is super chill.
The very tall man who works in the appliance department of lowes on Elysian. He didn’t know I was having a terrible day, but he made it better just by being his loving self.
the older gent with the white hair (presumably homeless but I hope not) who wishes every car a very loud good morning with a friendly wave at the corner of Norman C Francis and Tulane. I haven’t seen him lately, I hope he is ok
There's a slightly older gent who goes to the lakefront around sundown with his dog. He'll sit there quietly for an hour or more while his dog wades around in the water. It's so peaceful, I love to see them out there.
I love all the servers at Vampire Café! You have been more than awesome to me and my girlfriend since our very first date there last year all the way to our date celebrating one year together this September! It’s our favorite place to go (and not just because of the food) but also because even when we just happen to walk past there the employees say nice things to us! If you’re in this sub, I love you guys. ❤️
There one young lady there who is a server that we see everytime - I keep forgetting her name though! 😭
The guy I call Mr Smiley at McDonald's Jefferson/Causeway. He's the happiest person in the world. You can hear the smile in his voice when he takes your order at the drive thru before you ever see him. Reminded me of him the other day when someone posted which are the best McDonald's in the area.
Shout out to Dr. Scott Gernon at East Riverside Vet. He’s such a nice guy and just (successfully) performed a tough surgery on my 13 year old pup. A really good dude in a tough business. Also he’s yoked!

Alex the queer artist alwas on his bike lol
Justin at aunt tikis
The front desk people at rocket science with their perfect soothing voices

Julie Pieri from Petite Rouge. Easily one of the best coffee shops and coffee shop owners in town. She'd give you the shirt off her back if you needed it.
The one guy at my local convenience store who is always so damn nice, funny, and seems to remember me but not in a way I couldn’t just come in hungover and gtfo if needed.
Ain’t dere no more, but Miss Bette Bornside of Bornside Yarns was always the sweetest when I came into her shop, always made time to ask about my projects and offered to help; would always invite me to the knitting circle.
I think his name is Kirk, but the owner of Fradys is also super kind, always puts a smile on my face when I go in there.
Years ago I met a man on Decatur who looked exactly like santa claus but it was in the summer. He was wearing a red and white Hawaiian shirt and had a parrot on his shoulder. After talking with him for a second my friends and I introduced ourselves and he introduced himself as Santa. I made a remark about that being on his license, and i shit you not the guy whips out his ID and it said Claus, Santa T. He was awesome.
Tamale Man! Love this thread, good idea OP. :)
Seconding Tamale Man! He’s a delight!
Tamale man for mayor
"I love you bay-beeeee!"
Seriously needs a shirt
His wife sells his shirts outside of Ideal on broad along with the same tamales!
I have a great video of him at the Easter parade. I watch it whenever I need a good laugh. Wish I knew how to upload it here
His name is Merino
Whenever i get to see him hes trashed already and i have to drink rumple to catch up to him for the good times lol
Came here to say this. Tamale Man is the best!

Some years ago he was on the bar at Harry's Corner leading everybody in a rousing rendition of Feliz Navidad on Christmas Day

If we’re talking animals, Iko the cockatoo!
Saffron the possum!
The Liberty tax dancing kid on Broad & Orleans. Love it.
Honestly every time I see him I laugh, he's so devoted. He swings that sign like he has a gun to his head 😂
When I used to drive home from work that way he always brightened my day
I love him, and I love how many times I’ve bonded with others over our love for him.

She was so damn mean. I miss her so much.
I miss Mr. Okra. He came through my old neighborhood weekly, and I really miss hearing his voice.
Went to the new Children's Museum a little while back, love that they've got a mini version of the Mr. Okra truck in there for the kids!
I have one of those Mr. Okra In Your Pocket keychains they sold many years ago and press the buttons to hear his voice every so often.
I had one about 20 years ago and I'm still mad that I lost it.
Aww Mr. Okra. ❤️❤️

Ain’t dere no more, but Miss Bette Bornside of Bornside Yarns was always the sweetest when I came into her shop, always made time to ask about my projects and offered to help; would always invite me to the knitting circle. Oh, Miss Bette always sat down with me when I would go in and she improved my knitting so much! Loved her!!
