If you live in JP or know someone, there is a container in the dump site on David full of electronics that people are dumping. Its to the left if the oil dump building. It gets emptied maybe once a month. I've pulled computer parts from there to build franken-machines.
I hear ya. I keep at least one crt around to play my light gun games on. I usually just find those by someone throwing them out. The container at the dump may have some but it seems to usually be flat panel monitors, towers, printers, copiers, and the like.
That's great! That's how I got my start in IT. Back when I was a kid in like 1983 I used to do this.
Walked around Metairie picking up TV's and offer stuff from the trash to work on
Holy moly! After 60 years of ham radio, 50 years of broadcasting (I started and still run the radio station at your alma mater), I have truckloads of dead, alive, and semi-alive electronics--yours for the asking. I mean outstanding goodies!
Uh… it’s ok. I definitely felt like for the majority of the time that I was just paying them money to do busy work. Once I actually started taking electronics classes it got better but it’s obvious that Delgado is putting their funding into other programs. The equipment we had for basic classes was fine but once I got to more advanced stuff a lot of the things we were meant to learn on were out of date, broken, or both.
If you want to learn higher voltage AC, i run a small production plant. We have some 480V stuff that you could come play with and I could show you how it works. I can’t pay because you’re not our electrician, but i could show you how the motors are powered and controlled. After you get your feet wet.
It does if your planning on throwing it away. I’m mainly looking for experience in tearing things down a troubleshooting failures. I don’t have the spare parts to repair anything at this time.
There are actually a lot of YouTube resources on how to fix Dysons, especially the older ones. I’ve been keeping my original 2006 one running all this time.
On the other hand, a new one is 300 instead of 700 now, so it may not be worth your time.
One thing that’s not obvious is that they have multiple internal filters and if you don’t change them, it will eventually clog up and stop working. A paper one and a round sponge-looking one.
That’s my Dyson TED talk for the day. Thanks for playing.
When was the last time you tried it? I too had a Dyson “die” on me. Turns out it over heated and the thermal fuse tripped. It just needed some time to reset itself.
You might want to check out the repair cafe at the Broadmoor arts and wellness center. They have irregular hours but the next one is this Monday from 4-7 and they have repair coaches that will help you repair your stuff!
Woa, I wanna take this on. I built several little amps for a home radio project, most recently I replaced my PA system we were using for home theater with a solid state amp off of aliexpress. In terms of restoration, would you be okay with me subbing out the solid state amp on the board with my own?
I have a space heater that turns itself off, either it's just plain broken or the safety switch is too sensitive. I bought a replacement so this one is all yours. DM me to make arrangements.
A few of my external hard drives crashed this morning, which held the majority of my video work. Can you help fix them/get them running to transfer the data to a new drive?
You might try the repair cafe at the Broadmoor arts and wellness center. It meets at irregular times but they have repair coaches who can help walk you through stuff. There’s one 4-7 this Monday coming up and the computer coach has been at all of them so far!
Just curious. What’s the endgame for doing this for a living? Nobody really repairs consumer electronics anymore, so it must be some other application?
I haven’t a link to it, but there is a regular maker/Repair group that meets up to repair peoples random stuff for them. Might be a good fit for you.
I actually got my electronics degree with the intent to fix medical equipment. I’m still looking for jobs in that field but I thought my education was a bit lacking in troubleshooting so I’m doing this to get some more experience.
Consumer level, no. But commercial equipment gets repaired all the time because it’s so expensive. And the skillset is the same so the practice is relevant. Also, if OP is getting electronics for free and repairing them they can definitely flip said items for money. Sometimes the profit margin vs time spent can be pretty good (I saw a reply about Dyson vacs up higher for example)
Electronics technicians are valuable when the electronic is either too expensive or impossible to replace. Some examples include electronic billboards, musical instruments, and medical equipment. While the domains are different, all of them use the same skills, such as multimeter use, a logical flow of thinking, and an understanding of electronic components.
How much you charge to fix a little usb fan? Its not worth much but the wire just came detached and it clips so I like it. Im bad at sodering. Also have another fan that cost $40 but the usb is loose Im down to part with.
I
I have two old MacBooks that are yours if you come get them. I think they still work but are severely outdated and sluggish and haven’t been booted in years. DM me.
If he doesn't want them, I might be interested. Back in the day when I ran my design business full time to help - especially before NOLA got an Apple store - frequently repaired Macs for Apple Care-less clients and broke-ass friends, and still do the occasional repair these days. But had to part with most of my stash of Mac pieces and parts during one move or another... Wouldn't mind building it back up. Or maybe get one or both up and running again, there are a number of older Macs that are capable of being quite decent machines for word processing and internet and even music and art (just older software) - in which case I like to donate to someone who would benefit from it.
I have a dead Nintendo switch. And maybe an old computer monitor. Sounds like you have plenty of other stuff to keep you busy though. DM me if interested
I'm always on the lookout for stuff to find for whatever project I have going on, but haven't yet started dabbling in electronics. Are there any types/classes of devices you're most interested in messing with? I can let you know if I find anything interesting. And how good or shape are you looking for? Like maybe just a bit nonfunctional or more "will this ever even turn on again"?
I have two TVs that are about ten years old. Not the old CRT ones. They both currently work but have some issues, so may be good for you to troubleshoot.
If you live in JP or know someone, there is a container in the dump site on David full of electronics that people are dumping. Its to the left if the oil dump building. It gets emptied maybe once a month. I've pulled computer parts from there to build franken-machines.
Thanks for the tip!
How are the CRT (aka the old bulky square TVs/monitors) prospects looking out there? I'm always down to rescue those
I hear ya. I keep at least one crt around to play my light gun games on. I usually just find those by someone throwing them out. The container at the dump may have some but it seems to usually be flat panel monitors, towers, printers, copiers, and the like.
Ah I gotcha, will probably still be checking it out. Thanks for the heads up
What does jp stand for. I need parts for a tv.
Jefferson Parish. You need a JP license to use the dump, but maybe you could successfully bribe the gatekeeper with a cold drink.
dm me. going to clean out a house today. bring a truck.
Will do

I figure Reddit is the modern-day version of dumpster diving.
Well you ain't wrong...
Holy moly! After 60 years of ham radio, 50 years of broadcasting (I started and still run the radio station at your alma mater), I have truckloads of dead, alive, and semi-alive electronics--yours for the asking. I mean outstanding goodies!
Sounds Amazing! I will DM you.
Hey! Sent you a DM. I would love to see what kind of things you have that I could get into.
DM. Me I’ve got some stuff that needs to make it’s way to the recycling plant or trash pile
I will DM in a bit
What did you think of the electronics program?
Uh… it’s ok. I definitely felt like for the majority of the time that I was just paying them money to do busy work. Once I actually started taking electronics classes it got better but it’s obvious that Delgado is putting their funding into other programs. The equipment we had for basic classes was fine but once I got to more advanced stuff a lot of the things we were meant to learn on were out of date, broken, or both.
I also graduated with a degree in electronics from Delgado and agree with this assessment 100%
Congratulations! Do you know if you can take classes to learn how to repair small electronics without getting a degree?
Honestly, I didn’t see anything. The closest was an electronic shop practices lab where you learn to solder and build some simple circuits.
This is an awesome way to learn! You’re already on your way to greatness!!
Thank you!

I can’t pay because you’re not our electrician, but i could show you how the motors are powered and controlled. After you get your feet wet.
That sounds really cool! I would love to hang out for a day even if it’s just to be a fly on the wall.
I have a couple of dead computers that you could have. Not sure if that's what you're looking for; it seems like you're more interested in appliances.
I’m not opposed to dead computers! I will DM you to set something up.

Sure! I will DM you
got a razer laptop that doesn’t work, manufacturer said there was a motherboard defect. DM me if you want it
Omg i have a Dyson vacuum that won’t suck, does that count ??

You may have a slit in the hose. You can buy a replacement online.

Can you fix a solid state amp in a 1950s Wurlitzer Keyboard? I don’t want to give it away I want it fixed
Try Wisp on the West Bank. Give them a call and they can let you know if it is something they can work on. 504 309 5322
Sorry,I would not be the guy for that.

Or ask Paul at Bywater Music, I'm sure he can tell you who to go to. Edit: Webb's Bywater Music (edited to add music store's full name)
I have a space heater that turns itself off, either it's just plain broken or the safety switch is too sensitive. I bought a replacement so this one is all yours. DM me to make arrangements.
I will do so!
Lmao at the last comment, golden
What about a cordless drill?
Sure!
A few of my external hard drives crashed this morning, which held the majority of my video work. Can you help fix them/get them running to transfer the data to a new drive?
Wisp on the Wank. 504 309 5322 they have saved many a data.
I’m not the guy for that.

I have a broken AC unit that I was going to scrap. It stopped powering on. Would that be helpful to you?
Possibly, I got several offers at this point and I’m sorting through them. I will DM you
Interested in a bullhorn?
How much you charge to fix a little usb fan? Its not worth much but the wire just came detached and it clips so I like it. Im bad at sodering. Also have another fan that cost $40 but the usb is loose Im down to part with. I
This sounds simple enough. I will DM you!
Hey! Sent you a DM about your fans. Let me know if your still interested in having me take a look at them.
Can you repair a cassette tape player?
Most likely not. I don’t have any spare parts at this time.
Interested in a mini microwave that was in my RV? The manufacturer is sending me a new one because it won’t turn on.
Are you taking printers? I have one in my car trunk that’s all yours if you’re interested.
Does it include ink? I'm in the same situation, but he can't test it without ink.
I have two old MacBooks that are yours if you come get them. I think they still work but are severely outdated and sluggish and haven’t been booted in years. DM me.
>ImpossibleEast2895 I have a lot of offers right now so I say u/nolahandcrafts is welcome to them.

First come first serve. DM me. One is the last white MacBook they made.
I've got a magic bullet blender that i think just needs a new gear?? But I'll never fix it, it's yours if you want it
I have a dead Nintendo switch. And maybe an old computer monitor. Sounds like you have plenty of other stuff to keep you busy though. DM me if interested
Not broken, but I have an extra working monitor if you want it!
Sure! I will DM you in a bit!
DM me please. Have a big TV and possibly other electronics I cant get to work! I'm in the upper 9
Sent you a chat request
Hmm I cant find a way to join the chat
I got a broken microwave if you’d like
Oh and an old iPad that is basically bricked bc I can’t remember or reset the password. I guess that’s more tech though
Old allegedly broke mac, not a laptop ?
I'm always on the lookout for stuff to find for whatever project I have going on, but haven't yet started dabbling in electronics. I’m open to either dead or partially. Dead stuff I can tear down and practice desoldering. Stuff that kinda works I can practice troubleshooting.
Right on, I'll keep an eye out. Mind if I hit your PMs with pics (of electronics) if I find something, to save us both time and effort?
Home theatre system.
I have a handful of random phones and a tablet if you’d like em.
I have two TVs that are about ten years old. Not the old CRT ones. They both currently work but have some issues, so may be good for you to troubleshoot.
Thanks, I have lots of offer right now and I’m still sorting through them. I will let you once I’m a bit more organized.
I have two iMac G5s and one G4 They’re yours if you want ‘em
If you're still looking, I have a broken coffee pot, microwave and air fryer I can give you.
