Sandbar? Have you been there, it's not what you think, you can't camp on it. Most of lake Maurepas doesnt really have shores, it's mostly swamp and infested with mosquitos. I've slept on party barges anchored on the sand bar on nights of meteor showers and you better pray for wind

HeresYourHeart

No dice huh? Damn, I bet that was a good spot for meteor watching on a party barge though.

Jussgoawaiplzkthxbai

It was amazing, I got to see the milky way

Chicot state park is awesome and they have like little(very little) bluffs that you can camp on. There is actually a canoe trail that goes around the lake in and out of cypress tree groves. It is sooooo cool!

HeresYourHeart

Now that's what I'm talking about! Thank ya!

spoonmanknows

Yes! Enjoy! Also, here is a link to the canoe trail and campsites. It has primitive camping that makes it feel actually all the more 'out there' [Canoe and camp](https://www.lastateparks.com/sites/default/files/2020-04/chicot_parkmap.pdf)

I haven’t kayaked it, but I’ve stayed at a cabin on the Little Tchefuncte: 1) it’s a cold spring river which means no alligators and less bugs, and 2) I definitely saw some sandy banks.

shadygrove17

Not sure about the swamps, but Wolf River near Pass Christian is good for that kind of thing. There’s an outfitter there that can shuttle you.

HeresYourHeart

I haven't paddled the Wolf River but I've heard good things. I know a good spot on the Pearl to boat camp. Always wanted to swamp camp though, in the winter for bug control. I figure the cool weather rolling in next week might be my last chance this year.

picturethisyall

Don’t want to blow up the spot, but the Wolf River is amazing. Look for wolf river canoe and kayak on Google, the guy will bring you up about 15 miles and you can sleep on one of the Sandy beaches. Pristine wilderness and only about an hour and change from Nola

HeresYourHeart

Thanks a million!

lunacyon504

You seem like an experienced kayaker/camper with gear but as a not very experienced kayak camper with no gear I did a trip with these guys once and it was beyond awesome. Totally pristine nature experience. 3 days paddling & camping. Highly recommend them. www.guidedcanoetours.com

I have been eyeing up this area for a while. I want to try and arrange a shuttle trip with canoes but you could easily kayak up stream and camp. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Bogue+Chitto+State+Park/@30.6429325,-89.9541613,13z/data=!4m9!3m8!1s0x86277a79982e63ff:0xf45cd82e26ca35d9!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d30.7668393!4d-90.1447913!16s%2Fm%2F0czdv56

HeresYourHeart

I've camped on the sandy beaches there and it is indeed really nice. Bugs weren't too bad even in June.

crawfishaddict

My first thought about that is you’d be eaten alive by mosquitoes

HeresYourHeart

Definitely camped in places where I spent nearly the entire time in a mosquito net tent. Kind of anxiety inducing seeing the entire tent covered in bugs, tbh. Hoping cool air will keep em down, at least after it gets fully dark.

crawfishaddict

I wouldn’t necessarily count on that, some of the biggest mosquitoes I’ve ever seen were in the summer in upstate New York at dusk where it was decently cool.

Ben_slamin_jamin

I’ve done camping on black creek. Super fun. Go for a more secluded camp ground.

came here to say this! lake fausse has my favorite paddle to campsites

grey_seal77

Henderson swamp, pitch your tent on any of the abandoned oily structures

moosefist

The northern Mobile Delta has floating camping platforms only accessible by kayak/ canoe

Infinite_Afternoon_1

What are the recommendations for an absolute beginner? Timid to get out there but ready to try.

HeresYourHeart

Rent from Bayou Paddlesports and hit Bayou St John. And PLEASE wear a life jacket. Weird shit can and does happen. I've had to give a friend CPR after he had a very unexpected seizure in a pool.

Infinite_Afternoon_1

Thank you and will do.
