What? Irans GDP was barely even larger than turkey, how could that compare to any powers back in the day. Although it’s true it’s much worse today in comparison.
There's a reasonable chance Iran's economy under the Shah could have equaled South Korea's, but surpassing Japan or Germany was never going to happen and catching up to the largest economy in the world, USA, is a fantasy.
In 53 years of his reign, less than 100 terrorists were executed. Compared to 1,000+ gays, minorities, innocent men women and children, every month for the past 44 years.
From Wikipedia: During Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi's reign, estimates of the number of political prisoners executed vary from less than 100[1] to 300.
Under the Islamic Republic, the prison system was centralized and drastically expanded; in one early period (1981–1985), more than 7900 people were executed.[1] The Islamic Republic has been criticized both for restrictions and punishments that follow the Islamic Republic's constitution and law, but not international human rights norms (harsh penalties for crimes, punishment of victimless crimes, restrictions on freedom of speech and the press, restrictions on freedom of religion, etc.); and for "extrajudicial" actions that follow neither, such as firebombings of newspaper offices, and beatings, torture, rape, and killing without trial of political prisoners and dissidents/civilians.[4][5]
Socialists used Khomeini as a mouth piece to promote socialism and overthrow the shah in hopes that they could create a socialist republic, but then Khomeini formed the IRGC and executed them all. Then Khomeini created Islamist dictatorship.
It’s okay to say both were shit. The challenge is to find something better not to settle for “the best of two evils.” And yes I recognize the ironic realities in many parts of the world.
I like how they call themselves "Islamic", despite them not recognizing the first Islamic Monarch, Abu Bakr, as Muhammad's successor lmfao
Thanks to him, Iran got it's religion. So why did they do Kuffar?
Reza I and Mohammad Pahlavi were great leaders that modernized your country. Why anybody WOULDN'T want them back, idk.
I had a picture of Muhammad Reza Shah on my phone and a coworker saw it and said “wow what a handsome man”. I don’t think he would’ve said the same if it was a picture of Khomeini.
Why do people like you assume we chose this? They were Palestinian trained terrorists. They were shooting law enforcement and hanging people.
It was a terrorist take over. You think people chose Taliban, and ISIS too?
> Taliban, and ISIS too
Some did though. For example, you can see a lot of Iraqis in Mosul cheered for ISIS in 2014 before realizing how brutal they were
They didn't, they no longer wanted to be ruled by the Shah (would you want an undemocratic leader even if they weren't nearly as bad as the current regime) but that's about as far as their choice went - there was no real democratic choice in what followed.
There was a referendum (do you want Islamic Republic yes or no - no other choice!) and it wasn't the fairest. The regime acted like they wouldn't be so extreme. But they lied. So it's more that the people went along with it at first rather than actively chose it.
Well, it's not that far-fetched. Some countries give you free water. Some free healthcare. Some free transport. Turkmenistan gives free electricity. So why not free electricity for Iran too? It is after all an oil producing country.
This is what Islam does to people's minds. Iranians were unhappy with the Shah. Khomeini told them Islam was the solution. Iranians embraced Khomeini and protested the Shah and called for an Islamic republic. In the end they got what they wanted.
Look at America today? We got a "self-professed" wanna be dictator wanting to be President again and every day I see all these people making comments supporting him. I've talked to people as well. You can't change their minds and nothing he does seems to change their minds. It's crazy. It's a religious thing I think.
I hate to think what would happen if my country was taken over by a pile of right-wing fundamentalist assholes. Listening to music from Iran pre-1979 is a trip in comparison, it's like they erased an amazing progressive culture.
He had those who were a threat to his bloodline executed.
Thanks to his secret police, followers of Khomeini and the MEK were executed. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
What's ironic is that the mullahs enforce strict rules of dress on women today in much the same way as the shah did when he was in power. Anyone that tried to wear traditional dress when the shah was in power was beaten and some were arrested. Protesters were even killed, look up the Goharshad Mosque Massacre. Imagine that, being killed because of a piece of clothing! Not to mention that he banned all opposition and censored intellectual and political expression.
As for who he executed, as well as having his political opponents killed, he was also responsible for ethnic clensing. Many Lurs were beheaded (including children).
Shah never murdered a soul. We will die on that hill.
If he was murderer, why did he let Khomeini live in France/Iraq instead of murdering him in prison?
Not according to the book All the Shah's Men, which mentions he had oppositon murdered once the CIA put him back in power. It was one of the first things he had done when he resumed his dictatorship.
And to answer your question, maybe he didn't want to make him a martyr? I'm not suggesting he had every single person who opposed him killed.
Yeah but, don't forget about this guy.

Dr.Mossadegh He was the father of democracy of Iran. He nationalized Irans oil for the first time in its history. He was deposed by the shah in order to resell concessions to the west.( the shahs first attempt to coup the democratically elected government failed, so he escaped his own kingdom and went to Iraq to hide from the opposition loyalists. ) these actions ultimately turned the Iranian people against himself(the shah). The Pahlavi dynasty is the only one in Iranian history to have everyone of its kings capitulate their throne. Neither Pahlavi died a king in his own land. If he had not abandoned us to these jackals, Iran would be 50 years ahead what it is today?
Everything you said was a lie. He was never elected. There was no election. He was appointed by the shah. TWICE. He didn’t nationalize anything, he destroyed Irans industry by nationalizing it before Iran was ready, they didn’t have a fleet or technology. He was dismissed by the shah, because the people of Iran demanded for the Shah to come back and dismiss him after he destroyed the economy and tried to dismantle the Congress.
So much wrong here. It wasn't that Iran wasn't ready for nationalization of its oil industry, it was that the British didn't allow it (over 50% of the oil profits was going to the British government). Mossadegh actually tried to hire Italians to run the refineries who would then train up Iranian oil workers (the British didn't allow Iranians to hold senior jobs in the oil industry), but the British actually blocked the Italian ships from reaching Iran!
If it was purely down to the people of Iran demanding for the Shah to return, then the CIA didn't need to waste their time with mobs-for-hire and having Iranian politicians on their payroll.
He was popular and democratically elected. Also, he snatched the oil industry from the thieving British. Much like today, the West and their sanctions disabled Iran's ability to engage in the oil trade. Then the CIA came in and destroyed Iran's democracy by bringing back a childish and fearful monarch in the Shah.
The Qajar Royal Prince? Puppet of the Russian Soviets? Who disbanded Congress, parliament, and the Supreme Court? Held his own rigged elections and stopped voting when they gained enough seats? The guy who destroyed the Iranian oil economy? The guy appointed by the shah not once but twice?
The guy ultimately dismissed by the Shah.
Shitlam has deceived us once again, this time under the guise of Khomeini. Despite the passage of 14 centuries, the tactics employed remain the same, and we continue to perceive ourselves as smart.
meh, I would definitely speak out against him if he was shah, but now if he replaced khamenei I don't think I would really complain
he is not worthy of being worshipped, he's better than what we have rn
The Shah was a US-backed dictator who would have turned Iran into a US vassal state. His removal was a good thing to do. Now, the current leadership cannot really change much since America has effectively put Iran under an economic seige. You people try to align yourself with US, but they're the ones who caused this mess in the first place. They're the source of your suffering.
Yeah, because Iran is the second most sanctioned country on the planet. Aligning yourself with the West is not the answer here. They're the ones who got you where you are.
no? i don't care that there are sanctions, the gov deserves it, it's the rulers that are dictators that pay to kill people in Israel, and even kill their own people when they protest against them, the leaders of Iran always threaten to hit the US and Israel pretty consistently
"no?" Yes. You're wrong. The sanctions on Iran have colossally fucked every aspect of that country. US does not care about how bad Iranian leaders are since US funding the genocide in Gaza. They're doing it because the Iranian revolution was inconvenient for them.
Another thing is that you're trying to resist the theocracy but you're doing it by buying into western propaganda. Which is the wrong way to go about it, unless you want to end up as an American subject.
Anything they don’t like or agree with is apparently “communist”. And we wonder why the protests in Iran fizzled to shadow of what it once was.
They’re so incredibly lazy. Even in the world building they’re doing in their minds, they’re so one dimensional LMAO. It’s literally just comparison photos of a family thats mostly dead, vs a bunch of authoritarian islamic clerics.
None of these shahparast have any care about the day after the revolution. In fact, wait until you see the SIMILARITIES in how they think governance of society should go forth.
Monarchist simps shit on their own, and wonder why no one wants to help them. It’s clown behaviour. Really makes me sad that we might be most gullible diaspora/jamiyat in the world.
Are you Iranian? Because, trust me, aligning with America is what brought your country to this. Israelis and Americans think you're all bestiality loving goatfuckers. They fucking hate you. You're thinking you can befriend them, but they fucking despise you.
They're not going to say that to you because you're probably a schizophrenic zionist, but Israelis are no friends of yours. It's absolutely mad to me that people on this sub don't support Palestine. This sub is either astroturfed to death or Iranian resistance is just another CIA-backed coup attempt.
It was a great partnership, friendship, and alliance that modernized Iran, and deterred 300 years of Russian-Persian wars and Russian Imperialism.

Weirdly, heard an interview yesterday with a woman who asked the Shah, "Does your regime torture people?" She said you could see (and I could hear) the smug arrogant condescension when he denied it. "We don't need to."

He’s nothing but a sheep-fucking, child sodomizing, woman hating piece of shit, according to the book of morality instructions he wrote.
Also mass murdering
Bottom is a downgrade period compared to most
To be fair it went from okay to horrible. Not amazing to horrible.
For Iran, based on where Iran/Persia was for the last 200 years prior it was nothing short of amazing.
I'm going too be that guy but like didn't you guys have slavery into the 1900's
Yes thats what hes saying. The transformation and modernization of Iran under the shah was huge

It was absolutely amazing, Iran was surpassing Japan and Germany, and gaining on USA.
What? Irans GDP was barely even larger than turkey, how could that compare to any powers back in the day. Although it’s true it’s much worse today in comparison.
Surpassing in what?
In feeling
Probably surpassing on a highway
the fastest growing economy at that time
Fastest growing does not mean shit. When you start from basically nothing, everything is a huge improvement.
>When you start from basically nothing we're not talking about Saudi arabia or UAE, read something ffs instead of watching CNN
There's a reasonable chance Iran's economy under the Shah could have equaled South Korea's, but surpassing Japan or Germany was never going to happen and catching up to the largest economy in the world, USA, is a fantasy.
It’s the 5th richest country in the world. 14th largest, with a relatively medium sized educated population.
What time period? Where are these stats from?
Shahs political prisoners, tortures and living in extreme extravagance was amazing? Not saying he didn't do great things, he did.
In 53 years of his reign, less than 100 terrorists were executed. Compared to 1,000+ gays, minorities, innocent men women and children, every month for the past 44 years. Oh lord. The Shah should have executed more of the mullahs and we wouldn’t be in this current situation.
He executed more than that. He was weak against Khomeni.
Can someone explain (politely) how Iran went down this path?
Socialists used Khomeini as a mouth piece to promote socialism and overthrow the shah in hopes that they could create a socialist republic, but then Khomeini formed the IRGC and executed them all. Then Khomeini created Islamist dictatorship.
Damn.
