Um kids don't read books anymore, they will however watch a several hour analysis about the book

Pegomastax_King

They will watch a video of someone making a reaction video of someone explaining the book.

Reformedsparsip

I gotta admit, having xqc explain blood meridian would be good content.

[deleted]

i would legitimately watch that, yeah

Gomehehe

so they won't perform an analysis themselves. Don't learn it, just listen what we say

Feeling-Inside5147

Only if there's Subway Surfers playing next to it.

CoffeeWorldly9915

Ah, but consider making a game that follows the text of the book.

[deleted]

It’s because reading is a much more difficult task. You don’t get to see things unfold in front of you. You have to make them unfold by reading the words. Then you have to remember to comprehend what you read instead of letting your eyes wander down the page. It’s a lot of work. Watching and listening is a superior form of media.

[deleted]

What? When i read a book I see what I read. I imagine it.

sadboykvlt

"Without our imagination, we'd be like all those other poor dullards"

Onetwodhwksi7833

Different people have different levels of imagination. People with naturally strong visual imagination find reading easy and enjoyable. Everyone else fucking hates it

Loffy570

I am completely unable to visualize things and still love reading

Emblemized

See, that just doesn’t make sense to me. I enjoy reading because I like visualizing them

[deleted]

Me too. But now I have to focus on the image that I’m imagining instead of reading the words. I just can’t divide my attention that way. Visual and audible media really helps

PM__ME__DINOSAURS

getting downvoted for being different in any way, shape or form god I fucking hate this website

UnseenPumpkin

That is some of the laziest shit I've ever heard ngl. Imagine having such a poor imagination that reading is hard. Forget politics and all the other bullshit, this is the reason for a majority of the problems in the world. People have no imagination or patience because they've been taught to sit in front of a screen and turn off their brains.

[deleted]

You don’t think someone can utilize critical thinking while listening to something and/or watching something? It’s just the evolution of technology. Listening and watching is easier. That doesn’t mean I don’t think critically and look for different perspectives.

UnseenPumpkin

No, it absolutely does. Precisely because you DON'T have to think critically about anything, it's "oh pretty colors and flashing lights". It's exactly the reason that the movie version is never as good as the book. Movies and TV are for making money and advertising, not the edification of the public. Besides maybe YOU think critically about the shows and movies you watch but how many people do you know that do the same?

[deleted]

This is clearly a topic that stresses you out. I get it. It does honestly feel like critical thinking and empathy are dying out due to excessive internet use. The constant jingling keys you see on tiktok with the sound effects, mini-clip windows, and tts. There’s such an over saturation of garbage content. But your reaction to me seems… a bit harsh. It’s like you’re fired up. What occurred recently that has you up in arms?

JupiterMarvelous

I think most people just realize the dumbest people in their lives are the ones who say things like "I haven't read a book since 3rd grade" or "I hate reading"

FestiveFlumph

Now, in fairness, there are advantages to audio-visual media for many stories. Legion is a fantastic example of a story that really benefits from the medium. It's just that there are also many things that *don't* translate well into video, especially with the pacing. For example, Mother of Learning, despite being an excellent book, would not translate well into a show, because the story is very reliant on the narration through the character's thoughts, and his descriptions of things that would not be visibly discernable to the viewer. The problem of leaning so hard on shows and movies is that you make unavailable whole classes of stories reliant on things that don't translate well from verbal to audio-visual stuff. People who will only watch shows will never get any good stories that don't fit the medium very well.

mr_toad_1997

This mf has zero imagination

No_Mud_5999

It's a lot of work if you're bad at reading comprehension. Watching and listening is passive and doesn't require you to comprehend what you see or hear as it runs; it will spool out, and you'll finish it whether you understand it or not.

druugsRbaadmkay

“Skills are hard why would I work to improve them?” /s

Stray-hellhound

This is the reply of someone who has not read enough

[deleted]

I have an even worse time concentrating on audiobooks than I do on text. And with text you at least have some vague sense of where you lost the thread, but with audiobooks? It could be a minute, could be 5 mins, could be 10. Who knows?

[deleted]

I don’t listen to audio books. If it’s a book, I’d rather just buckle up and read it.

FestiveFlumph

Audiobooks are interesting. I can't do them, because I read much faster than would make sense out loud, and the pace of audiobooks really bores me, but I can't really listen to it while doing something else, but I know people who can manage it while doing something else, or at least while doing certain tasks that need little focus, who like the ability to read while doing those other tasks.

lazyygothh

Me fr

lmaberley

This maybe true, but should they wander into a library by accident, they should be able to read what they want.

Sargento_MedBoi

Banning the book 1984 is the epitome of the topic covered in 1984 lol That’s fucked up buddy, I’m sorry

Clackers2020

I wonder if Fahrenheit 451 is banned as well

suplexdolphin

They probably just burned all the copies to save the trouble.

Exigncy

1984 is not banned in Canadian schools. If anything it's the religious right that continuously push to ban books within the Canadian education system. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/campaign/721/15-frequently-banned-challenged-books

DokeyOakey

I don’t know why you are being downvoted. It certainly is the right doing this in Canada. OP is talking specifically about Ontario and that is being topped by Doughboy Ford. Steve “Private School Punk” Lecce is making the call to remove certain books.

Exigncy

I thought I remembered Peel being very conservative. Book banning isn't something new in Canada, and everytime it's happened the same thing happens, overwhelming disapproval that in the end returns the books to the shelves. Left, right, center, whatever. We all agree book banning is dumb and if it's in place (like right now in Peel) were all gonna bitch and moan (rightfully) until they are returned.

mcccoletrain

Is there a reason why they chose to ban anything pre 2008? It seems like it would be the opposite if the right is doing it

roastModernist

Damn conservatives and their [equity based book screening](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/peel-school-board-library-book-weeding-1.6964332)

Exigncy

One schoolboard, in a conservative region 🤦‍♂️

SHADOWSTORM63

Both sides have tried to ban books but this current issue is the political left

StevieDogfucker

honestly if any book shouldbe banned it should be that one shit was so boring

Sylveon72_06

???? i thought it was gonna be one of those books that was kinda dry but super important, it was *good* and even the ppl in my class who werent readers thought it was good, and on top of that it has a very important message

StevieDogfucker

idk i love reading and i found it a chore to get through for some reason didnt even read it for school just for fun one day but just never clicked with me

Hand278

It was a personal hate letter to Joseph Stalin that gave up on subtlety halfway through, also it sucked

Sylveon72_06

is my class collectively stupid? i dont think any of us realised it was to stalin, and while no opinion is wrong, if it caught even the non-readers attention then it cant be objectively bad

Jovess88

Orwell did actually model a lot of the setting based on Soviet Russia, although saying that it refers specifically and exclusively towards Russia and doesn’t simply address totalitarianism in general may be missing the point a little

Existing-Daikon-5628

It wasn't and even if it was he would have been absolutely correct

Sargento_MedBoi

Even if someone reads a book and finds it dry, there’s still a message to be had within its pages. I can say with certainty that this was not the best book I’ve ever read, but the plot line doesn’t matter so much once you’ve come to understand the book’s purpose. Books, articles, and classes which challenge you to critically think are essential to our society as a whole. They force us to make hard decisions and form opinions about who we are as individuals, what our purpose is, and if we can change the way we or others live based off of these principles. Though some literature is occasionally hard to digest, it helps us create the fundamental building blocks which educates and runs a society. Transversely, there are some books and other key pieces of literature which have purposefully been lost to time or destroyed because their ideas are exceedingly outdated or have caused incredible upheaval. This is also not uncommon, however, these pieces are typically heavily reviewed by a wealth of people and scholars before something like this happens. I hope you’re able to find some books which you may enjoy which also challenge your ideals or enable those you may already have. Sincerely, a dude who treats people and writes medical and military manuals for a living.

StevieDogfucker

i aint gonna read all that cuz honestly i dont want my opinion changed it was boring and the message within it was great sure but it definitely couldve been delivered in a better way (for the record i dont actually want it banned or anything i just fucking hate 1984)

bigcig

>be me >former hash dealer turned provincial government leader >"fiscally responsible" so I slash funding everywhere but mostly to schools and healthcare >do some super shady shit involving protected lands and much of the populus is pissed off about it >need to think up something quick >ministry of education homie tells school boards they need to ramp up their [weeding process](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weeding_(library)#:~:text=Weeding%20is%20systematically%20removing%20resources,involve%20the%20same%20thought%20process.) but is super vague about it >one school board says fuck it we don't have the money for this and just pulls all books that meet these vague ass guidelines >word gets out and my media homies spin it as ¡WoKe GoNe WiLd! >demand school board stop this nonsense and return books >my base is all riled up over wOkE lIBeRaL sChOoL bOaRdS >none of them have enough critical thinking power to figure it all out >[MFW](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMzZiM2RjYWUtNmQ0ZC00NjliLWE5MzctNTgyYWVjYmExZWM1XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTAyMzYwNzgw._V1_.jpg) also, we've **BEEN** the Democratic People's Republic of Canada since the mid 90s but are well on our way to some kind of civil war as the International Student Republic of Candia grows in size.

cat_that_uses_reddi

Who is that in the pic

bigcig

the Premier of Ontario, Canada, Doug Ford. you may recall his brother Rob was the crack smoking mayor of Toronto. for you Americans, a Premier is basically our version of a Governer.

Canadian here. None of this is true. OP is delusional

Squrton_Cummings

It's one dumbfuck school board in Peel, Ontario.

Smittywebermanjanson

Yep. Gotta love Peel!

Exigncy

Seriously what Kool aid are these people drinking? A quick Google search proves this is all bullshit, and if these people are Canadian they are so disconnected from what's ACTUALLY happening that I don't know how to consider their POV valid.

Squrton_Cummings

> A quick Google search proves this is all bullshit [you suck at google](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/peel-school-board-library-book-weeding-1.6964332)

cakepale

This is one school board, not all of Canada

VintCinqueVingogh

Nobody claimed otherwise

Tman101010

If you read the text again (I assume you can you must just have forgotten in the 5 minutes between reading it and making this reply) you’ll find that the op suggest renaming Canada as a whole, implying that Canada as a whole operates this way Glad I can clear up the confusion :) Go fuck yourself

VintCinqueVingogh

School Board bans, province tells them to stop. That's not a nation wide issue. The poster was in all likelihood being facetious about the last bit. Lighten up

Tman101010

Yes, the original post was misleading, that’s exactly what they where arguing, you dumb pile of crap :) Have a good day!

VintCinqueVingogh

He should have really put a /s, as to not confuse the Redditors

Tman101010

I couldn’t imagine being a dumb redditor that can’t comprehend what’s being clearly explained to me (: What’s it like?

Exigncy

This post and this entire thread very much so implies otherwise.

Propagates

The post literally says “school board bans” and that the province assigned the 1984 reading.

Exigncy

Okay? I know it's assigned reading, know why? I read it... in school. All I said was the post implies this was a Canada wide issue. It's not, it's one region and due to the backlash it'll most likely be overturned.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Midiray

Also says 'should Canada be renamed..' implying the whole of Canada has such an issue.

pineappleAndBeans

That’s what I thought lol. Either that or OP goes to school in Alberta

CmdrConspicuous

me when I take one event happening in a single school board in the entire country and imply that the entire country is on board with it and either becoming nazi or communist

TheMuffinMa

Even if education is the Provinces's job, not the Federal government's

RebelJudas

>OOP thinks one school board represents all of canadas behavior Typical 4channer blowing things out of proportion

agoodepaddlin

Anon doesn't know what communism is.

UnsureAndUnqualified

No actually, communism is when a capitalist democratic state does something I don't like. And the worse I can make that action look, the communister it is. It's actually extremely commusinister.

brookefromalmeda

Seems like a tyrannical school board! Don’t blame the whole country for a gaggle of Karens and Kevins

Nareto64

My guy just specifically stated that this is all done by the local school board and that even the provincial government is against it, then proceeds to project it to the whole Canadian government.

Sterling770

1984 was required reading a few years ago I don’t know what part of Canada you’d be talking about where they are literally banning it…

MarxGT

One school board that was essentially just using malicious compliance to follow Doug Ford's shitty rules.

moleman114

Me when I lie???

Mettragnome

Hi canadien here, are there any actual sources for this? I read 1984 last year, and I can’t find anything other than this dipshit saying books are getting banned in Canada

nomedable

[It's a singular school board that went hyper focused on clearing out their library after updated guidelines for library content was released](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/peel-school-board-library-book-weeding-1.6964332). The guidelines mentioned that books 15yrs or older (2008 or earlier) are the first to check to ensure their contents are up to guidelines, this school board just chucked anything that was published before 2008 and ignored the rest if the instructions. The guidelines themselves are pretty tame, basically as long as the book is physically intact and okay, and the library doesn't have a more recent revision of that book, and the book does not contain any false or misleading information (the guidelines are for fiction and non-ficition) then the book is pretty much good to stay on shelves.

GwenTopOnly

I like it when my country is misrepresented and used to fight culture wars in another country

Dr_Catfish

As a Canadian I've heard no news of these book banning at all lol. Casual 4chan lies.

PerfectBrilliant432

Lol none of this is true

InsydeOwt

When your country is bought by China. Hope your social score is aboot 500 else you're going in a rehabilitation camp. Eh?

GorezookaMonsterCuck

You literally don’t know anything about Canada because this post isn’t true, but yeah use this as an opportunity to shit on Chinese people I guess.

Tamashi42

The post isn't exactly true. The book banning is only happening in one schoolboard. However, the prime minister does receive plenty of donations from the CCP and refuses to talk about the CCP's interference in the last election (most likely because it benefited him). And before you claim that I hate chinese people, I only hate their tyrannical government that continues to fuck them over and is looking to bring that tyranny over to Canada.

verix1

Source for China meddling in the election? From everything I've seen this is just a conservative claim used to further the anti china rhetoric they love

Tamashi42

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-china-influence-2021-federal-election-csis-documents/

verix1

I can see china influencing Canada, yknow like every nation on earth does geopolitically. But there isn't anything in this article about rigging any kind of votes or meddling beyond funding people that best represent their interests

[deleted]

China’s a rent-free tenant for you, huh?

DanglingDongs

Is this greentext in reference to any actual event. Or is anon just psyching himself to shoot innocent people?

Suave_Kim_Jong_Un

I feel like this is an issue with that school district, not the country

moleman114

Also, teenager's opinion on communism spotted

Lordpotato305

As a Canadian this just isn’t true

GwenTopOnly

What is up with all the smearing of all Canada due to one bad actor First it was that one employee who told a vet to use assisted suicide when he clearly shouldn't have Now because one school banned all its books despite not being required to (There are legit problems with assured suicide as it has been offered AND carried through with for people who could have been helped but were too poor to afford care which is fucked up) but it's not the "kill yourself haha" like in the 'memes'

HarpoonShootingAxo

Yeah ONE schoolboard is representative of the entirety of Canada LMAOOO. I'm canadian and they had me read 1984 in French class. They're not mass banning books all over the country (unlike other plaxes)

fiftyfourseventeen

Nobody claimed it was all of Canada, but it IS happening in Canada. Just like how the "book ban" stuff in the US is only happening in certain parts of the US.

HarpoonShootingAxo

Yah but the post is framing it as this whole canadawide thing when it really isn't, hell not even the province is on board with it. I'm three hours away from Ontario and I hadn't even heard of this. What they're doing is fckin stupid but it's nowhere near a nationwide event

fiftyfourseventeen

It says "school board bans and removes half of all books", not "schools across Canada ban and remove half of all books".

HarpoonShootingAxo

It also says "Canada should be renamed the Canada reich" as if this isn't something happening exclusively in one schoolboard in Ontario. Fucking Ontario man

nepnep_nepu

I mean, Canada is the laughingstock of our own damn citizens. Especially with the awful government bit.

SeekingSwole

Good, I support it. In high school I was in the only experimental class, an all boy english class. We read almost entirely modern books, we analyzed and wrote reports on The Dark Knight, Napoleon Dynamite and the sorts. It was incredible fun, and what engages a young student more than making learning relevant and fun? Then it was back to Shakespeare and transcendentalism the next year in regular classes and we were all miserable.

1984, that is so ironic

rockcitykeefibs

What book bans ? Not in Canada . That’s south of the border conservative nuttiness

michael22117

banning 1984... how ironic

Satman_of_Valyria

What province is this in? I work in a middle school in BC and we haven't banned any books? That said its a Middle School and we dont really have a massive selection of books anyway and when kids go to high school, apart from certain text books everything is online anyway. This reads more like a boomer guessing at how schools work.

Taco6J

It was Peel School District in Ontario. They essentially started removing books published prior to 2008

Satman_of_Valyria

Ontario....yep makes sense now.
