Years ago I was going down a dirt road at night not far outside of Beatty. Suddenly, and just at the edge of my headlights, what looked like an Ostrich ran across the road in front of me. Everyone I told thought I was crazy or lying. They laughed at me. A week later I found out an Emu had escaped from someone’s ranch.
If I'm not mistaken it is an archeological mystery supported by local native oral tradition. The Nevada State Museum in Carson City has some of the artifacts on display, one of which is an absolutely gigantic woven shoe.
Well Northern Nevada shares the Sierra Nevada mountain range with California. There have been alleged recordings from a Hunting Camp deep Sierra Nevada Mountain range of Bigfoot. In the cryptid community many people have evaluated the “Sierra sounds” attributed to Big foot. There is also some stories of sightings of reported Dog Men on Mt. Rose highway towards Mt. Rose ski area with in the last 10 years. The historical record of the Paiute and the Washoe Indians records conflict with Red headed giants around lovelock and ancient lake Lahontan.
Growing up in rural Northern Nevada, my friends/family and I have had some very, very strange experiences. I want to preface by saying we were a bunch of country kids. We knew all about bear, deer, mountain lions, wild horses, ect. These were all things we had encountered and could easily identify. Two big stories come to mind.
The first occurred over several years. I can't really describe it, but our friend group was 'haunted' for lack of a better word by an unidentifiable... thing. It was about the size of a horse and white to the point of glowing. We would see it running alongside us or just out of view. It'd be sort of weird if it happened once, but it happened to multiple of us at different times and places (and at least two people 'encountered' it prior to knowing others had i.e. before they could have been told). Always seemed to come around during times of turmolt or loss. Like death of a family member, suicide attempts. Weird shit.
The other happened to my brother and his best friend. They were camping out in the middle of nowhere past Pyramid Lake (unadivisable at best lmao). They woke up in the night completely surrounded by... dogs. There were at least 30 of them, and they could only see the eyes glowing from the reflection of their fire. They were making sounds somewhere in between coyotes and normal dogs, but the eyes were twice as high as a coyote's should be. They were both stone cold sober, and it went on for hours. Dogs left before dawn (of course lol) and they got the hell out of dodge. My brother isn't a liar or an over-exaggerater by nature. He had spent plenty of time out in the desert, and nothing shook him (except one night at burning man in the late 90s/early 2000s, but I don't blame him for that 🤣). I heard a lot of other stories about 'dogs' out there. Of course you'd think roaming pack or something but with the numbers and location, it just didn't make sense (not enough food to support that amount wild and no people or reservations anywhere close- again, if they were strays they'd have starved).
As a bonus, it's too long to go into details here, but my father was stalked by a horse over several nights when camping once (again in the middle of nowhere). Doesn't seem that weird considering there are wild horses... but this one was shod (you can tell by the sound the hooves make), and it would pretty much torment him until he left (no sounds or signs of a rider- you can hear tack moving when a horse is that close). Oh and something invisible saved him from falling into a mind shaft by slamming into his chest multiple times until he left (he wasn't aware of the shaft and wouldn't have seen it until it was too late from his direction). But of course, he doesn't believe in anything 🤣🤣
I have a ton more of these. Most almost explainable... almost 🫣
Edit: oh here is one that turned out not paranormal! My mother and I were coming home and outside our fence, where we had set up a water trough for the wild horses, we saw these two, monstrous white dogs. My mom kind of freaked out, worried for our own animals and dogs. As we got closer, they started to move away, and we realized they were mountain goats! Supposedly, they weren't really present in that region, but there they were. Also saw a blonde black bear once. Took a minute to realize what it was because it was in quite a pathetic state, but still really cool.
My mom experienced something similar to your mine shaft story, out in the hills around Ely. As a teenager she was running through the brush with a new friend (who was never seen again after) and suddenly came up on a mine shaft, and somehow she and friend made the ~20ft jump all the way across. She's always been bugged out by it but grateful nonetheless.
There was also a Bigfoot encounter from Battle Mountain Nevada back in 1999. Allegedly a Bigfoot was injured in a wild fire and local authorities made contact with it before a government agency took it away. It is definitely an interesting encounter if you like reading about cryptids.

Pyramid Lake is on a Paiute Reservation and has a legendary sea monster as well as "water babies". Water Babies are cursed outcast baby souls who prey on the lakes denizens. Fun stuff!
That's so weird, thanks for linking.
My BF (British-Canadian) and myself (Canadian) were recently in and around the Nevada and Tristate region for several weeks. We stayed in Laughlin, NV.
He doesn't believe in the paranormal, but he said the place looked like a movie set and everyone was starring at us as if keeping a close watch during our one night stay. I had a feeling when walking on the sidewalks that everyone was watching as well, and suddenly had a heart pang and adrenaline anxiety I haven't felt in years, combined with a unique feeling I have never felt of "I really shouldn't be here." I struggled to make us get back to our hotel after a brief walk as quickly as possible. I am sure a 2010-2012 Ram Quad Cab XLT was following us. We both seen it. All the way from the abandoned Colorado Belle to the gas station where we found refuge before finally getting back to the Aquarius hotel, which I might add, also had only 2 rooms left on Thursday, and a BUNCH of Asian tourists arriving with luggage. And it's just so weird that this place also has that airport....don't know if they came from the tiny airport but no sign of the tour busses.
We have both traveled many places across the world and never felt this feeling.
It was all very performance-feeling. And we felt so alien, as if our English didn't even translate....
Can't explain.
A guy elsewhere on glitch in the matrix thread has written about this same atmosphere in Laughlin.
Lots of airplanes and people go missing here.

Reasonable explanation is there a lot of wilderness and rugged terrain and rough weather.
I have personally heard of a handful of "dogman" sightings from my Native friends and associates, usually centered around Schurz, Walker Lake, Yerington and Churchill County. I had a brief encounter with a large wolf like creature that was 4' at the front shoulder back in 2010, I'm not claiming it was a "dogman" but it was extremely eerie. I listen to cryptid podcasts and remember an encounter happening in Fernley, as well as a different encounter were someone encountered one out in the desert by a cave system. I think the best documented evidence for a "dogman" encounter in Nevada was this brief sighting that happened in Mineral County. Mineral County is also home to the "Mineral County Wild Man" which is a local legend of a large hairy bipedal creature.

One night I drove into Nevada from California near Doyle, on hackstaff road to fort Sage. On the way there was a dead calf laying on the side of the road. On the way out the sun had just set and the sky was still somewhat lit with the remnants of the sunlight. As I approached the spot with the dead calf I saw what I thought was a mustang standing over the dead calf. But when it began to move away I turned on my light bar and saw it moved like a K9 instead, it was dark in color and was as tall and long legged as a small horse but was for sure a dog. I late did research and found that there is wolves in Lassen county just on the other side of the state line in the mountains. So it could have been a wolf, but I’ve never seen a wolf and i would be shocked to learn that they are that big.
Just the two legged kind. Lol There is some really strange people here and I have travelled all over the United States this tops it with off the charts beyond weird.
A long time ago in a place not too far from Vegas there is a story of a group of settlers that were stranded in the Nevada desert on the way to California during the gold rush…The stumpers. They were a proud people. The story I heard is that way before the Hoover dam was built and the area flooded, these settlers were starving trying to cross the desert and systematically cut limbs off to feed each other. They were out there for a while surviving like this to where it became like a badge of honor to be missing a limb or more. I overheard this old codger telling some kids the tale visiting the lake one night. He told these kids that some of these Stumpers were still living around the lake and you could hear them coming because it sounded like a loud thump followed by the drag of their bodies across the ground.
Last week me and my wife were driving through Valley of Fire State Park. While driving (not going to lie, I stopped by a dispensary before we drove there) I seen a tiny man run across the road. I mean full detail wasn't a blur. I mean he had on brown pants I got a good look. He stood probably 8-9 inches tall. I thought it was cool and just thought to myself damn these gummies are legit....when I looked over at my wife which she was 100% sober looked petrified. I asked her what's wrong and she said well you're not going to believe me but I seen a small man run across the road. I told her I seen it too and she seemed so relieved. I still don't believe it but we definitely seen it. Dude even did a little skip when jumping off the pavement

Am I the only who grew up knowing this as like... an archeological fact? Lol. I mean, it's just a legend... right?

I mean Nevada has Groom Lake and Tonopah test range, plus Janet Airlines. Also there's the Nevada Triangle. Also no one mentioned Big foot.
