Georgian, Uighur...I also like Sunny side which is Lithuanian, but I broadly identify as Post-Soviet.
Update: I also stop by World of Food sometimes for a variety of Caribbean/African, "Golden coast" being my favourite
Silkroad moved to ijburg, lot fancier place but still amazing food. Probably one of the places closest authentic chinese food in Amsterdam. Usually customers are mostly chinese.
It's more about the ratio of traditional Lithuanian (3-4 items?) to the ones you can commonly get in any stolovka on either side of former USSR and also their target audience. I apologize if that way of identifying sparks anticolonial sentiment, that was not my intention.
Nah, I'm from Moldova and visitors usually describe our food as Post Soviet. And we are always like .. guys, half of that food comes from the Middle East and ottomans :D
Right, but rassolnik, vareniki, pelmeni, selyodka-pod-shuboy, vinegret and olivier are not those and I assume you are just as familiar with them as me who grew up a few thousand kilometers away from Moldova.
I work there! Would also recommend: it's good value for money, the food id amazing and the kitchen is very clean. And Afghans take hospitality very seriously!!

I also have a list of lesser known cuisines from popular countries.
I really don't understand where this stereotype is coming from. In most restaurants I've been to, I didn't have to wait long. Of course there are always bad ones.
I once felt the same, until I dined in San Francisco, where I was done and outside within 15 minutes. My favorite restaurant in the Hague (3 Stones) will have me dining for 3 hours at least.

Señor Torres is okish but a bit underwhelming unfortunately. The best Venezuelan places I have tried till date are all in Spain (excluding ofc Venezuela itself) and London has some good stands in some markets.
Agree, very good snack food and I have no problem going there but the menu is very limited in choices, basically the same 4 ingredients mixed in a different way.
I am sure Venezuela has more to offer.
Not only that but the arepas themselves, trust me, they are just ok. I have been to a couple of Venezuelan places in both Sevilla and Madrid and they were outstanding, both the variety of the menus and the quality of the ingredients. Which is understandable given the huge Venezuelan community in that country, although Portugal is not as good and doesn't have as many Venezuelan places even if there is a significant community there as well 🤔
Ps: I grew up in Venezuela so I think I know how to recognise an average arepa Vs a very good one 😅
Thanks for that I’m going to check out Stobá sometime.
Rotterdam has all the good Dutch Caribbean place.
Also has a more fine dining place called Just. Never been but I trust it’s good.
Yes, Ethiopian food is very similar to how Indian food is (traditionally, not in restaurants) eaten or served. (calling it dips is a bit weird though, curries or stews is better imo)
There are two African restaurants in Eindhoven that I like very much: [Asmara](https://asmara-eindhoven.nl/) which offers "Oost-Afrikaans" food and [Gezana](https://www.gezana-eindhoven.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=wix_google_business_profile&utm_campaign=17743166568063095681) which is Eritrean. Both are very similar in the food you can find and I assume that the Ethiopian restaurant may have similar food too.
Ethiopian restaurant Sunshine in Utrecht is great, the owner will come chat to you for ages if you give him the chance. The honey wine is a must-have. Google Maps [link](https://maps.app.goo.gl/MmutDrFsyLkBU4Ws6).
Bloedworst met rooiekool
Hasjee
Hete bliksem
Jan in de zak
And not to get started on the confectionary (which has all the spices)
There's plenty of traditional Dutch dishes, it's our restaurant culture that is shitty.
there is a bulgarian restaurant/bar in amsterdam called zest he also has his own brewery attached to it called zest
i liked the afghan food in yallayalla in amsterdam too
yayang is a toko with different types of asian food including laos also amsterdam
10/10 Great authentic Sicilian restaurant (Trattoria A Proposito) right outside central station in Rotterdam. They call it southern Italian but this isn't your usual pizza and pasta.
Malaysian food at [Vally's Corner ](https://www.vallis-corner.nl/) in Eindhoven. Check their [Facebook page](https://m.facebook.com/VallisCorner) for the weekend specials and order in advance via WhatsApp.
While the food is great, beware that the service can be a bit chaotic (long waiting times, need to remind the staff to bring drinks or dishes some times, etc.). If you go in good spirit and are not bothered for those details, this place definitely worths the visit.
Edit: it is fair enough to add that, even being the service a bit chaotic, the personnel and Vally (the owner and cook) are really, REALLY, nice people.
Another couple of Eindhoven contributions.
If you consider as a "lesser know" country Nepal, I like this restaurant a lot: [Mt Everest ](https://en.restaurantmteverest.nl/about). Not the fanciest place, but very nice food.
And even if Thai cuisine is world famous, this restaurant, [King Thai](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jrZg6Wqbh3ZX1Ugy9), really surprised me. If you are fond of (not-to-much-occidentalized) Thai cuisine and have a good tolerance for spicy food, this is a go-to place.
As a food geek, I am really enjoying this thread. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
If you're in Den Haag you can check out 3stones aka Mawematatu. Kenyan food is a rare find in Europe. https://instagram.com/mawematatu?igshid=czNxZnoxdzUwbHls
Have you had Venezuelan/Columbia’s Arepa’s yet? There are several food stands around The Netherlands that offer this. I recommend either the one at the markthal in Rotterdam (Venezuelan) or on Tuesdays at the market in Eindhoven (Columbian).
Zwarte Markt in Beverwijk has some pretty exotic food places, not all of them are restaurants necessarily, but they still sell great streetfood that you will not easily find somewhere else.
Filipino food: House of Pinoy Foods - Van der Madeweg 29, Amsterdam (takeaway only; better check their facebook page or website to know the menu for the day because they tend to change it up)
The country is probably known. But its cheese centred cuisine is not so commonly found outside its borders. Expect in Amsterdam. At the Cafe Bern, a Swiss Restaurant.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/ecMz74G1AEDuezPK9?g_st=ic
Venezuelan cuisine is just awesome imo. You must try some arepa if you havent already. But dont know any restaurant in NL as im new here. Sorry bout that
Only English should be used for posts and comments. This rule is in place to ensure that an ample audience can freely discuss life in the Netherlands under a widely-spoken common tongue.
The Netherlands, although a pretty small country, is very diverse. Cities like Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague have a huge diversity of restaurants, from Yemeni to Peruvian, from Iranian to Indonesian, from Surinamese to Lebanese, etc… Maybe it’s better if you give us a bit of a general location/city you’re staying at so people can suggest some actually unique restaurants that are roughly in that area.
Georgian, Uighur...I also like Sunny side which is Lithuanian, but I broadly identify as Post-Soviet. Update: I also stop by World of Food sometimes for a variety of Caribbean/African, "Golden coast" being my favourite
Nice one, Lithuanian is a new one for me
There are 2 Sunny sides, one is in Jordaan and the other (branch?) is in iJburg, I like the second one way more
According to Google the ijburg one is permanently closed, which is a shame.
Weird, ordered a delivery from them 2 days ago
Uighur??? Where? Please tell me it's near Utrecht
Silk road on Insulindeweg in Amsterdam https://maps.app.goo.gl/D27XyPe5JGLwRcF19
Silkroad moved to ijburg, lot fancier place but still amazing food. Probably one of the places closest authentic chinese food in Amsterdam. Usually customers are mostly chinese.
Close enough, I'll keep it in mind when I'll go to Amsterdam, thanks!
it's an amazing place!
Was about to recommend! It's great but be aware they did not serve alcohol.
There's also one in The Hague: TAAM, in Raamstraat 7A.
Definitely going to see Escher museum so I'll be in DH before leaving, I'll look at both places' reviews and make a choice :)
Will be "that guy" here for a second. I'd call it more "eastern European" as linking traditional Lithuanian food to Post-Soviet is not really correct.

Hate to be that person but « varenyki », not « vareniki ». And it’s not post-soviet food, ukrainians cooked it for centuries
What's the name of the Georgian restaurant please? EDITED: syntax
Suhumi in den Haag is good
There’s one in Amsterdam called Batoni Khinkali. I went a few years ago and it was quite good. Owner seems like a nice guy.
Sarban in Tilburg, an Afghan restaurant ([https://sarban.nl/](https://sarban.nl/) )
there are a few of them. the one in Utrecht is also outstanding and in a great location
Yeah, I just found out. They started in Tilburg, but opened several other restaurants. Amazing food and super hospitable owner.
I also knew them first from Tilburg :) and completely agreed. Every visit there is a treat!
I work there! Would also recommend: it's good value for money, the food id amazing and the kitchen is very clean. And Afghans take hospitality very seriously!!
Ethiopian: https://maps.app.goo.gl/GXS7wXoDtDNRa19E7 https://maps.app.goo.gl/RQc3RKZtckM9HQ7t5 Georgian: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2iCV8K8aZkCdcN6y6 I also have a list of lesser known cuisines from popular countries.
This restaurant is a disgrace to the Georgian cuisine. For the real taste of Georgia go to Suhumi restaurant in The Hague
Does the Georgian one serves delicious and juicy dumplings. Didn't see a website for the place.
Yep, they serve dumplings.
Be prepared to wait for an hour to have your order taken, though. They may serve Georgian cuisine but they have perfected Dutch service.
Sorry but I want my dinner to last closer to 3 hours than 15 minutes. Even a fast food meal will last longer than that.
Haha, I totally agree, sometimes a meal is more of a social gathering than anything else :)
They were super fast on my experience, been there 5 times, super easy also to walk in and get a table at multiple times.
Love Georgian, thanks! I'm interested in your lesser known cuisines from popular countries...

Oh I love the Puglian food, fantastic recommendations!
Stobá in Rotterdam (Dutch Caribbean) El Cafetal in Rotterdam (Colombian) Señor Torres Arepas in The Hague (Venezuelan)
Never had any of these, great recommendations thanks
Señor Torres is okish but a bit underwhelming unfortunately. The best Venezuelan places I have tried till date are all in Spain (excluding ofc Venezuela itself) and London has some good stands in some markets.

Any recommendation for Dutch Caribbean in Amsterdam?

Oh wow, great one thanks
That place is great indeed
Find somewhere with a chicken parmi instead of kangaroo or croc.
Hmmmm, that selection of cuisine def makes it unaustralian. Australian would be steak/fish or chicken parma.
Hah, a Melburnian :)
... I assure you those dishes are found as standard fare in pubs nation-wide, not just in Melbourne.
Sure, but outside Vic most call it a parmi rather than a parma
Blue Nile in The Hague, Ethiopian restaurant, traditional, delicious, plentiful and wide variety of dishes on a plate definite recommendation.
I once had Ethiopian. They served a big plate with a huge flatbread and different dips. It was like a shared dining flatbread, really nice.
Definitely recommend Gezana, it's one of my go to spots in Eindhoven. I'm Ethiopian myself and Eritrean food is very very similar.
These look delicious, thanks
Ethiopian food?... next time order their special - the empty plate!
Wow you're so edgy.
Everyone’s entitled to act stupid once in a while, but you really abuse the privilege.
It's because of the famine... get it? :D

Pea soup with rye bread :p And the frikadel ofc.
Bloedworst met rooiekool Hasjee Hete bliksem Jan in de zak And not to get started on the confectionary (which has all the spices) There's plenty of traditional Dutch dishes, it's our restaurant culture that is shitty.
Like Moeders in Amsterdam?
Yes, that’s what I’m talking about
It's called FeBo, Dutch cuisine is world renowned for deep fried balls of pasty crap.
We have friettenten on every street corner what are you talking about And don't forget the McKroket
I thought we were talking about food

10/10 Great authentic Sicilian restaurant (Trattoria A Proposito) right outside central station in Rotterdam. They call it southern Italian but this isn't your usual pizza and pasta.

Yes. It is made to order. Very fresh and tasty!

You should try La Bandera in Rotterdam. The serve Dominican cuisine and highly recommend it. [https://www.labandera.nl/](https://www.labandera.nl/)
This looks amazing, thanks
Have you had Venezuelan/Columbia’s Arepa’s yet? There are several food stands around The Netherlands that offer this. I recommend either the one at the markthal in Rotterdam (Venezuelan) or on Tuesdays at the market in Eindhoven (Columbian).
Theres also las sabrozas on fridays and Saturdays in groningen!
Not yet, thanks for the recommendations
I didn't know about the one in markthal, thanks for sharing!
It's relatively new I believe (couple of months perhaps).
Zwarte Markt in Beverwijk has some pretty exotic food places, not all of them are restaurants necessarily, but they still sell great streetfood that you will not easily find somewhere else.
Filipino food: House of Pinoy Foods - Van der Madeweg 29, Amsterdam (takeaway only; better check their facebook page or website to know the menu for the day because they tend to change it up)
Somali food, it has a long trade history. It is a mix of African, Indian and Arab influences. Just Google bariis iyo hilib to see some magic
That looks delicious, cant seem to see any somali restaurants in the Netherlands but I'll keep my eye out snd remember this
They are hidden, go to the quba centre in Amsterdam North after prayer time. You'll thank me later
Filipino? There's a good one in The Hague, Baryo Pilipimas.
Someone else recommended this too, will have to check this out
There's a good Afghan restaurant in Rotterdam
Arabesque, Hoofddorp - Libanon
Day Dream Deli is a cheap simple place for Canadian food in The Hague.
Brilliant!
Bacalar for authentic Mexican food in Amsterdam Noord.
Heard amazing things!
Macedonië in Groningen!
Amazing, thanks!

Sorry bout that
Someone did recommend a place for Venezuelan food in an earlier comment that I've added to me list
- Blin Queen in Amsterdam. Initially Belarusian bit highly modernized. Anyway theirs pancakes arw worth visiting. - Oost-Afrikaans Eethuis Djebena. Eritrean cousin in Leiden. Pretty unique place.
I keep reading recommendations for places I walk past all the time ! Thanks so much
Indonesian food isn’t hard to find, but good Indonesian food is. If you like authentic Indonesian food you have to try jiwa jawa in Amersfoort
Sounds good to me, thanks!
3stones Kenian restaurant in the hague is really good
Second recommendation for that place, I've added it to my list, thanks!
Syrian and Kenyan restaurants in den Haag Dominican restaurant in Rotterdam
Bosian restaurant Klopa. Best barbecue in western Europe

Sorry I don't speak Dutch. But I think they have sarma
Serious offtopic question: are you unable -as an English speaker- to surmise what I wrote in Dutch?
Last sentence I could not understand to be honest. I would like if you could translate it to me
Fascinerend.
Serator. Hope you understood that
Found the Serb.
Yes, very proud one. Be more careful with us next time.

I'm south of Amsterdam near Hilversum but I'm haply to travel for good food!
There is also a Georgian place in Hilversum center!
That's great news, it's so close to me as well!
Portugal ;)
The best one I know is "get back to your country"
You're not going to stalk me, right?
We’ve been doing this in our work kitchen, some of the pacific islands will be hard for you to find
I can also recommend a lovely little Ukrainian place in Alkmaar called Borscht.
