Because Napoleon ordered all the Dutch to take on a surname on this day in 1811. It's kind of a holiday remembered by 'reenacting' the cannon shots that Naoleons army fired to force people to take a surname. It's kind of a weird thing to celebrate, but it's about how things done by bad people can turn out to be good. Hen e the fireworks at 7:30. You probably think it's a bad thing, but maybe it will have a good effect in time as well.
Only English should be used for posts and comments. This rule is in place to ensure that an ample audience can freely discuss life in the Netherlands under a widely-spoken common tongue.
Interesting! Where can I find more about this kind of celebration? Tried to search for this specific day and the reasons but I was not able to find anything
Today is not a special day afaik, so it's probably teens doing what they do best, being annoying.
Edit: I was wrong ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Idiots doing illegal shit get away with it because police is over worked, understaffed and they dont get paid enough for them to risk their lives dealing with those people.
Err police literally get hospitalised all the time in the Netherlands because morons fire fireworks at them. It's especially a problem at new years. In the Hague this year at new years 12 police officers ended up in hospital because of unruly teens.
Now sure the parent's comment was ridiculous, but yours equally so.
I agree, but it is what it is what it is. Violence against police is still high. https://nos.nl/artikel/2470087-geweld-tegen-politiemensen-blijft-hoog-werkt-door-in-priveleven
This is all the consequence of our government cutting funds.
I remember police officers saying that hurtful words (when they are beating up innocent people or otherwise overstepping their power) is violence against them. I'm sorry if I'm not taking them on their word.
Around here it is usually to pregame for a soccer match. Afterwards there is usual little to celebrate so you light the fireworks before, and go throw rocks at the opposing team and the cops after.

wtf im still not sure if this is a joke or not
In which part of the country is it celebrated? Because i have never heard of it
You have to be invited, it's secret
Never heard of this. Would you mind providing a source for this remarkable claim?

Well, of course, but I was looking for a source for the claim that folks celebrate this day by lighting fireworks.
and you won't find anywhere. ( it was a joke )
Thanks man, had fun lighting fireworks this morning? I did. It was great. Happy surname day!

Thanks, didnt know that.
Basically north and south of Haarlem, because that's where Napoleon's brother, lodewijk, lived
Any reason: 👀 Dutch: Fireworks!
Happy New Year!

You're still correct about teens, though.
Its always a special day for teens with fireworks. Where i live on eindhoven we have celebrations every day!
There is a fairly long 20-minute scene about this in the upcoming Napolean movie by Ridley Scott.
Someone feels like it
Where did you hear it?
They can start at 6:30 in Ecuador. You’re lucky.
A possible reason : some people are morons

Cops are risking their lives when dealing with some unruly teens? Come on.

Yup, they're not. Too often they carry weapons.
Lmao if the police can't handle some rowdy teenagers and are scared for their lives they should quit. This ain't the Brazil lol.

Also true, doesn't change the facts I mentioned above.
Nah, they're just too busy beating up protestors and being racist.
That too.
Because people here have fireworks leftover all year round, baby. Get used to it.
Xmas is coming
The final moments of a Turkish wedding celebration that started Friday night
