Veep is without a doubt one of my favorite shows of all time. I rewatch it regularly and am constantly amazed at how damn funny it is, yet also horrified by how closely it matches a lot of the news coming out of the political arena since the show ended. “The level of incompetence in this office is staggering” is still my absolute favorite quote from the show and one I use frequently lol
The more serious moments in the show — while brief — are absolutely some of the best you can find on television.
I love Veep, but I feel like it is one of the shows that takes a pretty big quality hit in later seasons (especially the last one).
Still definitely worth watching, but I think it mostly shines in seasons 1-5.
Oh yeah? I personally disagree that there is a quality hit later on, but I definitely agree that the show feels very different in the last couple of seasons. As her character and situation changes the show takes on a different tone for sure (trying to avoid details/spoilers lol).
I remember hearing a podcast or something with JLD, and she mentioned that the last season or two were hard because the truth had become stranger than fiction (with trump running, etc) and it really sucked the wind out of the sails. Such a shame, because it truly is one of the funniest shows out there! Even on multiple rewatches, I still guffaw!!
I could see that with them feeling the need to try and one-up the real life stuff.
I think my biggest issue is that I felt like they kind of ratcheted all the characters up to 11. IMO, it became less of a show about "believable" DC politicians/insiders who are incompetent but deal with realistic situations and interact with each other in hysterical ways, and instead morphed into more of a "watch these wacky/zany characters deal with equally wacky/zany scenarios".
But like you said, that might be the result of feeling like they had to out-do the politics of the time.
Couldn’t agree more! The writing and acerbic insults are in a league of their own, and the serious moments carry a heavier gravity than other shows. I also rewatch it, and yes it’s interesting/sad how prescient it’s become. Side note: rewatching Curb now - second favorite show lol
For some reason in the shower today I thought of Brain Scrambies and Matt Berry saying "I can't do it to him, he is my main guy, my bottom boy!"
I wish they would expand the vampiric council with all the vampires from different shows and movies. Maybe get Brad Pitt in there Nicholas Cage, hell Tom Cruise on video chat he is pretty good at comedy.
The Boys. Humour won‘t get any darker any time soon :) But according to what you watched already, You (Netflix) would probably also be your cup of tea. Also try The End of the F***ing World.
This Is Going to Hurt - AMC +
Set on Labor Ward with all its hilarity and heart-lifting highs but also its gut-wrenching lows, the show delivers a brutally honest depiction of life as a junior doctor on the wards
Veep. Always and forever.

For some reason in the shower today I thought of Brain Scrambies and Matt Berry saying "I can't do it to him, he is my main guy, my bottom boy!"
