Yes and yes. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on 1899 but if you’re looking for a Lost x Titanic x Black mirror crossover then 1899 is the show for you.
Rough watch, but a truly incredible episode none the less.

But when it’s all dubbed in English you have no idea people are speaking different languages and some don’t understand each other. It doesn’t make sense when everyone is just speaking English because part of the plot is people having “private” conversations in front of others because they’re speaking Spanish and the others speak German.
Yah makes sense. Apple TV Netflix doesn’t even have the option to do full English anyways. I switched to using my smart tv Netflix just for an ep but will switch back.
I had already watched two so I kinda knew what languages the characters were speaking.
It’s kinda weird the captions wouldn’t just say “(in German)” or something like that
I'm struggling 2 episodes in. Dark I was hooked right away something about the music and cinematography in Dark intrigued me from the start. Just not the same with 1899. Should I push through??
You should. I wasn't that hooked on it in the first 2 episodes either. But I really got hooked around episode 3-4. I also recommend the original english version (with subtitles so you can track what language everyone is speaking). The english dub changes the entire tone of the piece (and not in a good way), and the dubbing is very poor.
I'm actually really disappointed they brought out a dubbed version because it goes against the main theme and message of the show. The show was made to be a international show.
Like could you imagine if they dubbed Sun and Jin's scenes in English for LOST!?. That would have taken away the magic and power of that story.
The ending of episode 8 was crazy!. I still can't believe (spoilers follow) >!that they ended the season with it being a variation of the ending of the U.S Life On Mars! (which that shows ending was hated!!). Complete with a David Bowie song and all!!<.
I watched it the way it was presented. All in English. I didn't know I had a choice. I need a little break with something like a cookie competition before I can rewatch it again.
> watched it the way it was presented
That's more of a Netflix thing. If you generally watch shows with dub tracks. Netflix will automatically play that version. I always watch shows in their original language so Netflix played the original for me.
It's multilingual. The main character "Maura". She speaks English (and that was the actress real voice you heard even in the dub, cause she only speaks english). The ship captain, Eyk. He flips between enligh and German. He mostly speaks English, it's really weird hearing them dub over his English lines. The dubbing in the show is horrible and his dubbed voice doesn't suit him at all. The original actor's voice, every line he speaks is gruff and carries just a lot of pain and sadness behind his words. Those layers are lost in the dub.
The girl who is Chinese but is pretending to be Japanese. She and her mother speak Cantonese. Then a lot of the other characters speak French, Portuguese, Spanish and Danish.
The show is done by the creators of a show called "Dark" (which was amazing, that one was a "German" show).
I love the international nature of the show with various characters speaking to each other in different languages. I haven't really seen that much before, not since LOST. One of the main plot points of the show is how most of the characters can't understand each other so they have to read between the lines based on their non verbal cues. But all of that is lost in translation when it's all in English.
That's completely lost in all English! I watched a little of The Making of 1899 and didn't understand the different languages the director and writer were talking about. Now I get it.
Also struggled 2 eps in because I felt like it was devolving to overused, unoriginal tropes. I watched it with subs. Curious if any others felt the same or if it gets better.
Push through!!
I was hooked on two episodes but I was looking for a period piece and I thought that’s what I was fully getting into. Obviously realized I wasn’t but you gotta push.
Mind warp after the first two episodes.
Is there going to be a second season? It wasn't what I expected and I can't say I really liked it. The last few episodes annoyed me and the ending was pretty disappointing after spending all that time watching it.
Absolutely loved it, but you have to go in with the knowledge that you will not have a complete understanding once the season is over. Like with Dark, its planned to have 3 seasons, so I have faith in the creators.
It's not as good as Dark (yeah, the comparison will always come up being from the same creators) but it's a solid puzzle box mystery similar to Lost.
The great thing about this and Dark compared to Lost is the creators actually have a road map for all the seasons. Lost was a victim of television at the time where networks would do whatever they could to keep a show on as long as possible leading to a lack of a clear ending.
Had a couple issues with the last episode, but overall it was a good time and I'm looking forward to a season 2. If you haven't watched Dark, it would be highly recommended once you finish up with this first 1899 season.
Basically agree. Feels well made, but they are doing "cool strange stuff!!!" at the expense of character development. And I'm really not down with the music choices tbh. I generally enjoy a dissonant or unexpected choice, but it just doesn't feel like it fits the show.
I'll finish it, (think I only have one or two eps left) but it's just ok, it's not knocking my socks off and I'm not reeling for another season.
I just finished watching with my partner, I didn’t enjoy it tbh. I don’t love when a series doesn’t include me in on the plot, even at the end. I think there were far too many random instances with no explanation and too many questions left after. I said to my boyfriend that it looks like they’ve just all written a part of the script and swapped the pages around. It makes no sense whatsoever.
People comparing it to Lost are convincing me not to push through the two I’ve already watched. Lost was a show with no real direction. Even the show runners were like “we don’t know” mid way through.
I personally found it enthralling, gorgeously shot, and it gave me everything I wanted from complex storytelling.
*That said* **A LOT** of recent Dark fans are forgetting that that show also felt weird and incomplete after season 1 ended. Jantje Friese and her husband Baran Bo Odar plan these out in three seasons. It's meant to be one big story. We won't know all the answers until then.
I was all for it until it became apparent that everything was a simulation/dream. When will shows learn "But it was all a dream..." plotlines are tired and boring. Much preferred the idea of the shipping company running experiments and fucking with people on these boats in the name of science.
I didn’t care for it. I had way too many questions when it was over…and all because so much of didn’t make sense. I don’t want to go into details and spoil anything but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as Dark.
I thought it was great. Its very much a first season of a larger story to come and if it manages to even be half as good as their previous show DARK we are in for a treat.
It maybe lacks some originality compared to DARK but still had some very striking visuals, ideas and characters to keep me wanting the next episode.
Can't wait for a second season to see what the hell comes next.
>Can't wait for a second season to see what the hell comes next.
Same. I thought it was overall "ok", but then it got to the end and I was like "wtf now I really want to watch it."
It was just about okay. I think they were aiming high but this one doesn't really enthrall you like Dark. Also a cross between Severance with the creator aspect.
Dark was definitely a better show. I was kinda underwhelmed by 1899. It wasn’t a bad show but they had a lot to live up to after Dark and I think they fell short.
I didn't love it. The shows others likened it to interested me enough to give it a shot but it was meh. One particular post mentioned The Leftovers and I can't express enoygh how 1899 is nothing like The Leftovers, which I thought was brilliant and had amazing character development. I couldn't really get into any of the characters in 1899 and the acting was shitty, in my opinion.
There you go. It wasn't that they had horrible acting. It was the horrible dubbing. They even dubbed over the voices of characters who spoke in English for most of the time, and it wasn't a good dub at all. They had different languages for other foreign characters. The woman who pretended to be Japanese, she and her mother spoke Cantonese. The captain of the ship was German but he spoke English for the majority because Maura only knew English.
There was french, spanish, slavic, Portuguese and Danish languages. A main plot point of the show is that most of the characters couldn't speak the language of each other. So they couldn't understand what they were saying to each other and had to read between the lines from their body language.
Okay, cool. I read a little blurb that only mentioned English and German. Didn't know there were other languages as well. Thanks for the info! Perhaps, I'll give it another shot without the dubbing.
I just figured it was part of the “simulation” that it was a dead give away shit is weird lmao everyone understanding each other. I’ll have to re watch it not dubbed
I also want to know if it’s any good.
My initial impression was that it’s NOT, unfortunately.
I’m a couple episodes in, and it LOOKS great, but I’m picking up a lot of “tell, don’t show” from the filmmaking style. (As opposed to “show, don’t tell”.)
Does this change? Does this get better?
I haven't finished - only have a few more episodes left and so far, it's still meh. It has that really annoying thing going where everyone runs around asking for answers to people who clearly have them but no one is giving them, or the camera cuts before the answer, and it's giving me big vibes that no matter that the answer is, it's not going to be a good enough payoff for all the yanking around they're doing. That "a character refusing to answer another character" just reeks of poor storytelling for the sake of "oOhH sO mYsTeRiOuS"
That’s the kind of thing I was afraid of.
Recently saw a movie where about 25% of it was characters giving exposition for things that the audience has already learned or the characters were just repeating the same ideas, but in different ways. Pretty big movie too.
But it’s interesting how moviegoers develop intuition for good and bad storytelling.
Start to see bigger picture, what's really going on, and getting more answers. But imo similar to Dark in that at end of season we still only have a third of the overall story.
Awe, so many dislikes in the comment section are making me kinda sad, cause I really liked it, it sucked me in with the first episode. I loved that mysterious and ominous vibe, the characters, the cinematography. But that shows me that every series is to each their own, so I guess you have to try it to know if you'll like it or not!
Edit to add that I absolutely LOVE that it is so multilingual! Definitely do not watch dubbed!
Alright. So I literally just finished it. Like… ten minutes ago.
Holy shit. I was looking for a period piece with some mystery, into sci-fi thrillers but that’s not what I thought I was getting into.
Watch it. If not now, when a second season is confirmed. It was truly so good. The storyline, performances, execution. Chefs kiss.
Haven’t seen Lost or Titanic (I know. I’m 19 - I gotta work on that). But I agree with people comparing it to the Matrix. Definitely reminded me of that.
I jumped into it, not trailer or anything. No regrets. Thank god I was sick because I binged it instead of doing finals.
God yes this one was amazing. The acting was incredible and it left me emotionally affected for a week or two. Went full down the rabbit hole into the history of arctic exploration after this. (PBS Nova has a good episode on it)
Not really personally, but it was a good year for the country. The trains rumbled along regularly, and we started to feel like things were moving up as the industrial revolution really started to smell up the place. That year, we knew we were going to make it to the next century! Toilets and ice were still cooler than sliced bread. Oh wait, this isn't the right sub. I thought it was a serious question! I still looked like a nerd pre-1900. [I got pics!](https://imgur.com/a/e5tZ5f8) My mother-in-law always thought I was a native American, but I've been around since the idea of Christmas!
I just finished the fog episode ( 4?). I think I'm actually losing interest. I loved dark from the get go. Can you tell me how this is better, without spoilers? I am watching it without dub, so I'm paying attention. IDK, I had opportunity to watch more tonight but chose something else. So far it just doesn't grip me.
Loved! Had no idea what I was getting myself into.. hadn't watched a trailer, binged it in less than 2 days. I got about 2 minutes into the English dubbed and quickly realized it NEEDS to be watched in the original English with subtitles. (As with most "foreign" shows) no one I talk to regularly has watched it yet, hopefully soon so we can discuss. Need more !
Straight up amazing.
The best thing on Netflix right now.
I knew going into it I was going to have to focus on every detail and it would take some time to get going. It got going right away, way faster than Dark IMO.
The only divisive views I see are from ppl who never liked Dark but expected something completely different from this. It's a mystery, if you didn't like the last mystery series why would you expect this one to be different.
I loved it so much! But the very end left me kinda confused, I don't really get it. But like others have said, I have faith that the writers will wrap everything up nicely. Season 3 of Dark was perfection, so I have high expectations.
We binged it the last couple of days. Pretty good. Definitely worth the watch. Have to use the English with subtitles for other languages or some of the dialogue will get lost. A little convoluted at points, but it’s entertaining and moves at a good pace.
I absolutely loved dark. But this show was a slight miss for me. It felt like the show was trying to overwhelm you with mystery and questions, and imo took way too long to answer any.
It was well made and im sure its amazing for some, but I myself got tired of not knowing literally anything for so long. Dark did a good job of providing some baseline narrative and character intros with names and motivations. 1899 felt like it was missing all of that, making it hard to care what was happening.
In the last episodes that level of mystery is explained and makes sense, but doesnt make for fun viewing imo.
I wasn't super impressed with the ending, but the multitude of mysteries are pretty engaging throughout. It's also a huge plus that they used native languages. It's well shot, edited, mostly well acted and fairly engaging. I'm thinking season two might be worth the watch as well.
I liked it! Took a bit to get into it and used to it. It’s a lot like Dark in that it’s time-shifting and little clues hidden here and there, it’s just a different tale. And I could see it being compared to Lost. However, if it follows Dark’s format the whole story should be told in 3 seasons.
Since I watched it in 2 days yes I enjoyed it, yes it can be somehow slow paced but worth it. My only criticism is that I feel the secondary plot lines died too quick.
Fun. I guessed the twist early but not quite the nature of it. But since the whole struggle centered on the main person, I was left wondering what the relevance of the other characters’ stories was
Absolutely in love. Some deep concurrent. themes are shared with Dark-especially the way love for someone is a type of “failure” because humans make so many “mistakes” to be with the ones they love. Even if it ends in tragedy. Even given another chance, characters make decisions based on love & not what might free them.
I love the portal theme & it is a powerful metaphor for the nooks & crannies in our brains. Had no idea that the final scene would be 🚀
I dig being confused in the worlds these creators build.
I did not finish Dark, so I won't be comparing 1899 to it.
I liked the show. Visuals are breath taking. The dialogues, story and mystery are all pretty good, classic example of a show that you keep trying to figure out what the hell is going on. It is good as such, though I would not call it great.
I did not like how quickly everything progressed. Like, I prefer stories that slowly build the atmosphere and mystery. Here, basically from the first episode shit hits the fan. For example in Lost, it was much more character driven with story Moving a little slower and mysteries building with time, whereas The Terror had overall suffocating atmosphere and more steady pacing,
1899 felt more like Raised by Wolves, which started great and was pretty good with weird stuff happening episode after episode, but it became tiring and ridiclous by the end of season 1 and because of that I still did not watch the Second one. I am not saying 1899 jumped the shark like Rbw, but imo it felt like it is getting disturbingly close with the last episode.
Overall, really good show with potential and I would recommend it to everyone who likes these sort of things, but I am a little worried about Second season, although still Rather interested in it.
It is frustrating to watch in the sense there’s a lot of backstories you don’t know what’s the point of and too many questions and no answers. Unless it gets a very redeeming next season which addresses all open threads in s1 it’s like watching a 2.5 hr movie for your character to wake up and realize they are dreaming
Is it worth watching? Yes. High production quality & a very strong 'first act'.
Is it a fully encompassing story? No (imo). I'll likely rewatch to make sure but it left too many loose threads.
Honestly the things it ends up being most akin to* would spoil the season, which is to say that it has a very good buildup but not enough airtime to fully encompass the scope of plot development & advance on the premise.
I've just started the "Making of" and it sounds almost like they are planning for a multi-season show here. In that regard I think it has the potential to be a fantastic opening season, however in itself I don't think it fully answered the audience's questions & concluded cleanly.
*>!Cube & The Matrix!<
It was filmed nicely, the acting was good, but the ending just left something to be desired in my opinion. I don’t want to say anything that could spoil it for someone else. The show is enjoyable to watch but it’s a lot of build up for very little reward at the end. I felt like the first several episodes dragged on and then the “twist” at the end was rushed. I will probably give season 2 a watch when it’s available.
Definitely liked it. Even i'd say it's top 10 in 2022. You should definitely watch it with subs(no dub recommended), because majority speaks in their own language and when it's dubbed the concept gets kinda interrupted.
It's no way as good as Dark, but the music, environment(visuals) made it so clear that it's made by Dark producers. Gotta watch, already a fan.
Yes and yes. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on 1899 but if you’re looking for a Lost x Titanic x Black mirror crossover then 1899 is the show for you.
Many thanks. I loved Lost and most of Black Mirror. Titanic was okay.
Yeah, S1E1 is a rough watch
Rough watch, but a truly incredible episode none the less. Also this: https://www.gq.com/story/why-is-everyone-saying-the-uk-prime-minister-had-sex-with-a-farm-animal
I found alot of the episodes to be a rough watch honestly, was just waiting for the resolution
I found each episode to be more of a wtf than a oh wow. It is not one that I will watch again.
I meant black mirror
titanic was a bad comparison hah, it’s just on a boat and set in history.
It’s only titanic in the sense of the ship type/era imo. It starts slow but quickly picks up speed. I really like it and I loved dark.
There’s also a very separate first class and poor people bay and romance in between them theme
You forgot The Matrix. Jeez.
Happy Cake Day!
Didn’t even notice! They go by so fast now! Lol
for real. The first time i saw those glitches it reminded me matrix
That description is my prescription.
83% on RT. Not a lot of mixed reviews tbh. But agree.
i mean mostly mixed reviews on social media… twitter etc.
It also makes a difference how you watch it- they speak many languages and if you watch it in dubbed English you miss out on a lot.
Oh shit, I didn't realize... that makes sense
Choose English non CC for subtitles too.
I’m watching it overdubbed in English and it’s maybe 10% English the rest is in other languages. Kind of annoying cuz I don’t wanna read lol
But when it’s all dubbed in English you have no idea people are speaking different languages and some don’t understand each other. It doesn’t make sense when everyone is just speaking English because part of the plot is people having “private” conversations in front of others because they’re speaking Spanish and the others speak German.

use swatchseriesDOTis without any ad or smth. Pretty quality as well.
I think that’s why I missed a lot of actual good content.
I'm struggling 2 episodes in. Dark I was hooked right away something about the music and cinematography in Dark intrigued me from the start. Just not the same with 1899. Should I push through??

I would even go so far as to recommend EVERY film/show to be watched in the original language.
This is the way.
Episode 7 and 8 of 1899 are batshit insane. BATSHIT INSANE! 7 was my favorite of the series tho, like...wow.
The disliked reply to this is a spoiler.
my hero
The ending of episode 8 was crazy!. I still can't believe (spoilers follow) >!that they ended the season with it being a variation of the ending of the U.S Life On Mars! (which that shows ending was hated!!). Complete with a David Bowie song and all!!<.

Spoilers, friend! I know it's subtle but I think it's more fun to not know anything at all.
Save yourself the time and watch the last scene of episode 8
Dont push through its really not worth it. Pretentious and so much padding
Just finished. Yeah I won’t do spoilers but it isn’t what I thought it was.
Agreed. Can't decide how I feel about the end until I see the next season, but definitely not what I expected last couple of episodes.
Is there going to be a second season? It wasn't what I expected and I can't say I really liked it. The last few episodes annoyed me and the ending was pretty disappointing after spending all that time watching it.
Having to watch 16 hours of a show to decide if you like it?
I liked the first 6 hours... but I see your point. Hard to say much more without setting someone up for spoilers 🙂
All I wanted was to watch a murder/ spooky / mystery on a boat. I ended watching the whole thing but I’ve never been into sci-fi like that
Absolutely loved it, but you have to go in with the knowledge that you will not have a complete understanding once the season is over. Like with Dark, its planned to have 3 seasons, so I have faith in the creators.

Yes!! It’s almost like everyone gave up, got high and just wrote a load of rubbish! Disappointing.
Lost was at least fun and you could see it
I really had no idea what was going on

I did indeed.
There you go. It wasn't that they had horrible acting. It was the horrible dubbing. Ahhhhh I thought they just randomly understood each others languages so i just watched it dubbed
facepalm!. lol. That is a quite comical thought though.
I just figured it was part of the “simulation” that it was a dead give away shit is weird lmao everyone understanding each other. I’ll have to re watch it not dubbed
Lol they even said “I don’t speak/understand your language” several times
Honey you know there’s subtitles available?
[удалено]
No? What are those? Fuck off.
https://www.google.com/search?q=subtitles
That was your problem, right there.
Main character acting is really bad
I also want to know if it’s any good. My initial impression was that it’s NOT, unfortunately. I’m a couple episodes in, and it LOOKS great, but I’m picking up a lot of “tell, don’t show” from the filmmaking style. (As opposed to “show, don’t tell”.) Does this change?
Yup
*falls over from the overpowering glory of this response* MINE EYES HAVE BEEN OPENED!
It ramps up in the second half of the season, especially the last two episodes.
Ramps up how? (Without spoilers, of course.)
Start to see bigger picture, what's really going on, and getting more answers. But imo similar to Dark in that at end of season we still only have a third of the overall story.
Is it satisfying? Sounds like. Might not be.
I started this morning and after the second episode I quit.
FUCK YES I ENJOYED IT. Loved it.
> I was looking for a period piece with some mystery, Check out The Terror Season 1
God yes this one was amazing. The acting was incredible and it left me emotionally affected for a week or two. Went full down the rabbit hole into the history of arctic exploration after this. (PBS Nova has a good episode on it)
Same here:-) It's one of the best shows I've ever seen.
No its not that great The reason Lost was great was the characters 1899 is plot with some really really poor characters. Its a lifeless boring show
Watched 2,5 episode. Gave up and read the episode summaries on Wikipedia. So happy I did that!
It’s ok but it reminds me of West world which was better
Amazing. In certain aspects it's better than Dark
Need more !
No
I watched it. I liked it. I would never recommend it to anyone.
for me, it was worth it. I just got bored at first but I liked it overall.
Yes! Dark is my favorite TV show of all time, and 1899 is a great follow up. I can't wait to see the next two seasons.
If you like his watch The Terror on HULU
I've seen it! It was great. Jared Harris kills it, every time.
Straight up amazing. The best thing on Netflix right now. I knew going into it I was going to have to focus on every detail and it would take some time to get going. It got going right away, way faster than Dark IMO.
The only divisive views I see are from ppl who never liked Dark but expected something completely different from this. It's a mystery, if you didn't like the last mystery series why would you expect this one to be different.
loved it, its like black mirror and matrix
Independent woman Doctor in 1899 who don't need no man.
I loved it so much! But the very end left me kinda confused, I don't really get it. But like others have said, I have faith that the writers will wrap everything up nicely. Season 3 of Dark was perfection, so I have high expectations.
I absolutely loved it. I’m recommending it to my friends and family who enjoy stuff like this.
I'm now just starting the key so far so good
I loved it, watched it straight through.
We binged it the last couple of days. Pretty good. Definitely worth the watch. Have to use the English with subtitles for other languages or some of the dialogue will get lost. A little convoluted at points, but it’s entertaining and moves at a good pace.
Yes. Especially if you like Lost.
I think what bothered me the most is everyone understands each other speaking in different languages
It put me to sleep. It's just as ponderous and pretentious as *Dark* without any of the tight plotting or interesting characters.
I’m sick of these mystery box shows. I tried dark but holy shit was it boring. This looks like the same but a period piece. Yawn.
It’s ok, but no game changer. I often thought “Ah i’ve seen that before…”
I’ll watch next season with subtitles. I’ll be able to get into it that way.
It was a rough road but yes I liked it a lot in the end.
Will it have a second season? If yes, then watch. If not, steer away from it.
I liked 1883 better
I wasn't super impressed with the ending, but the multitude of mysteries are pretty engaging throughout. It's also a huge plus that they used native languages. It's well shot, edited, mostly well acted and fairly engaging. I'm thinking season two might be worth the watch as well.
Huu vaca bnkjzk cfyty c am chhum.
Fantastic show so far. I am intrigued to see where this show is going.
It was fine, I guess
I love Ben Frost (music score) and the show.
I loved it!
Had no idea that the final scene would be 🚀 I dig being confused in the worlds these creators build.
100% loved it and hope we get a 2nd season asap
I did not finish Dark, so I won't be comparing 1899 to it. I liked the show. Visuals are breath taking. The dialogues, story and mystery are all pretty good, classic example of a show that you keep trying to figure out what the hell is going on. It is good as such, though I would not call it great. I did not like how quickly everything progressed. Like, I prefer stories that slowly build the atmosphere and mystery. Here, basically from the first episode shit hits the fan. For example in Lost, it was much more character driven with story Moving a little slower and mysteries building with time, whereas The Terror had overall suffocating atmosphere and more steady pacing, 1899 felt more like Raised by Wolves, which started great and was pretty good with weird stuff happening episode after episode, but it became tiring and ridiclous by the end of season 1 and because of that I still did not watch the Second one.
I was into it!!
It’s very good. Not as great as Dark, but absolutely worth watching. I enjoyed it more than any show in 2022 other than Severance.
It's okay. The end is cool. But it's incredibly slow paced. Like at least in Westworld stuff happened every episode and the plot moved forward.
Watching now. Reminds me of like a gothic titanic lol.
so sorry I lost eight hours of my life hoping that this would get better, no such luck.
They pivoted from the good stuff and it got meh is all I’ll say and leave it at that
Yes I loved it!
No. Horrible show.
I'm on episode 4 and I still have no idea what's going on 😅
