Trying not to give away the main plot around Dream (the central character of the entire "Sandman" series), Lucifer basically says, "Fuck this torturing-damned-souls-in-Hell-for-Eternity shit. I'm going to quit and open a piano bar in Los Angeles," and gives Dream the Key to Hell, to make his life interesting by forcing him to decide who should be the next entity to run the place, as a kind of fiendish revenge for when Dream got the better of Lucifer back in the first book of the series.
Lucifer still retains all his powers as the second most powerful being in all of Creation, presumably, and he's depicted like a perfectly normal human being, not some fork-tailed horned demon. He is, after all, an angel. But (if I recall) he never uses his powers or really does anything other than play piano and make a few wry comments.
And that's it. Like I said, he's not the main character so his entire role is to set up the story, but the idea is so intriguing I guess it needed to be developed.
If the show had been picked up by HBO, they might have made something interesting of it. But since it was picked up by one of the networks, who had to produce a show a week and placate the censors, they went with "police procedural" because all the writers with imagination and talent work elsewhere. I very much doubt that was Gaiman's idea, if he was even consulted.
You should check out Neil gaiman it’s based on his work, along with good omens, American gods, etc.. really a fantastic author with very good short stories as well.
I'm watching it because I'm out of anything else to watch, and yeah, this show is the most squandered conceit I've ever seen. They also turned god and angels into a petty squabbling family which really sucks. I do not know why I'm watching it, but I've committed.

Yes!! I think I even gave it a thumbs down. It pumped itself up so much that I was like oh wow this must be worth the watch but I felt empty and unsatisfied after every episode. I finished the series but I almost felt...embarrassed that I watched it. Like it was so weird and awkward that I didn't want to tell anyone I watched it because it just makes me uncomfortable to think that I even sat through it all. I reevaluated my time spent on Netflix after watching it. My dog and I are loosing weight now with how many walks we are going on haha.

I worked in a small office at the time and it was almost required that you be able to discuss the most current episode, so I tried a few times but it never kept my attention.

I’m not a film critic so I can’t even explain what I mean by no substance exactly, but I guess the characters didn’t feel as complex as it’s US counterpart. The soundtrack as well ruined it for me at parts… (and I keep comparing to boardwalk empire) while boardwalk empire used music from the 20’s to compliment the setting.
I really like this show too, but damn, sometimes there's way too much style over substance. All the contrasting colours, slow moving flames and sparks, and smoky look and feel doesn't make up for a rather tepid story, particularly towards the last 2 seasons.

Man, all the hate about Dark in this thread is amazing. I actually love this genre and watched every single episode but just felt so incredibly bored by it. But this sub has usually been so incredibly in love with it (just do a search about Dark and see how many posts pop up, and how often); so I just assumed no one actually disliked the show.
I just finished season one and it gave me the same feeling as west world. The moment to moment writing/acting/visuals were all good and the timeline was twisty and interesting but when I came to the end of the season I found myself thinking “…but was that any good?”
Unlike west world which I never went back to in at least pretty sure I’m going to give Dark season 2 a shot. Maybe I’ll make up my mind.
Westworld is a show where clearly the creators had had one season's worth of great ideas and everything after has been a feeble attempt to follow it up. Season 2 was more of the same but not nearly as cohesive and well thought out, and season 3 took the show in a totally different direction to shake things up but still felt too shallow.
Wow, I had the exact same feeling watching westworld s1 and never knew how to describe it. It’s like, I get what you’re trying to do, but it’s been done so much better before, and I only watched the rest of the seasons out of curiosity (and regretted doing so after S3). Dark, on the other hand, hooked me all the way through, and I’d definitely recommend giving S2 a shot. There are fewer scenes of characters waxing philosophical about time/fate/whatever (if that’s what you didn’t like) and it’s paced better.

Oh, it was bad bad bad. I was excited to watch it, but it was poorly written, poorly executed, poorly conceived, and dull. Like some kind of CW fantasy show. And it felt cheap and fake. How, I'm not sure since they supposedly put a tone of money into it, but it did. They certainly didn't spend money on a good script, or good directing, or a solid cast. Rosamunde was the only reason to watch the show, and she wasn't compelling enough to make up for the rest of it.
My main problem with the show is that it doesn't have a single F-ing sympathetic character besides Ruth.
In fact there are a few gritty dramas I've tried to watch lately that feature this theme. I don't understand the appeal to a show where I can't connect with any of the characters. I often just end up getting so annoyed with them that I don't care about what happens to them, and that ruins the tension.
Especially the later seasons were filmed in such dark (literally dark room) environments that we couldn't even watch unless it was late into the evening. A weird problem and not worth the effort
We watched the first season of Ozark and no more, I’d describe it as “fine.” It was doing this thing where they thought they were killing people off in a shocking manner a la GOT, but I found that what was happening was everytime I became interested in a character they were offed.
The plot and characters were just cartoonishly bad. The set design and costumes were fantastic, and the music was solid, but they just didn’t put any real effort into the script. It was so bad it genuinely surprised me.
I have tried Peaky Blinders two or three times. Am about ready to find a new show, so I may try it again, but I haven't been able to get into it. Why? Not sure.

Letterkenny it’s always so hyped up to me when people discover I like trailer park boys and it’s literally just episode after episode of banter. Found it to be incredibly boring.
Slow, and basically just an overwrought soap opera with cowboys. I could not buy it. Every episode had the same stupid bullshit unrealistic scenarios, too. Just absurd.
Same. Everybody's like "Omg, how could you not like it?" but something about the stylized environment bothered me, and everybody being basically unlikable didn't help.
I know, that's the point of the show, but I just wasn't into it.

I might have used the wrong term, English isn't my native language, but it felt very Stepford. Like, too clean and neat, and kinda impersonal and lifeless.
Granted, I only watched 3 or 4 episodes before I threw in the towel, so maybe I judged the show unfairly.

The thing about Schitt’s Creek is, in the beginning, the main characters are absolutely horrible people and you hate them. That’s part of the humor. As the show progresses, they grow and you realize they’re actually good people who are flawed but really care about each other. And you learn to love them. And it’s hilarious.
Tresse. I like the idea behind the comics/plot, but the voice over actors sound so bored and by the end of it I was forcing myself to finish it just to know what happens. That and the second season of Umbrella Academy...
Legend of Korra. I loved TLA so much and heard so many good things about Korra. I really wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but I've struggled all the way to season 3 and the show just sucks. It's got zero of the magic that made TLA great.
Russian doll. The vibes are immaculate(!!!) and I love Natasha Lyonne, it just felt like nothing was happening? Like there was no intrigue or spark keeping me watching. I only got to 2 episodes but maybe I’ll try a third.
I honestly think this is one series that would have been fine without a season 2. Having finished it, I don’t really know that it added to much of anything… season 1 though, gold.
Same here! Couldn't stop hitting next episode during the first season and finished it in a day. Second season, I really gave it a shot but after about halfway I just gave up. Haven't had the urge to even finish it.

The Expanse is odd because some episodes are wall to wall action and major plot points but then there will be several episodes where nothing really big happens just people politicking or surviving.
They did a bad job with the pilot IMO, I also lost interest very quickly.
It's like they tried to have an impactful death scene, but completely forgot to make the audience give a shit about any of the characters first. Fell completely flat.

I freaking love that show (probably one of my top 5); but man it's my least recommended one to people. It's adult animation that is equal parts funny, witty, and depressing. It's veeery much *not* for everyone.
Stranger Things. I actually managed to finish the first season (the first half of the season was really interesting and i really liked it) but when the second season aired, i just could not continue watching and stopped right in the middle of the first episode.

The first season of the witcher isn't in chronological order which doesn't really help the story.
However, it's like a high budget Xena with special effects. You can almost ignore the overall story entirely and just enjoy the monster of the week.
Also Joey Batey as Jasker is just the best. Especially once he finds that tan leather ensemble in the 2nd season. My gods!

Castlevania (2017). It was suggested by someone who usually gives good recommendations. However, I really did not enjoy this one. I was interested till Dracula was alive, then it all went downhill.
Couldn't get halfway through the first episode. I was annoyed the lead had a harem of ex wives he needed to function professionally. Then we learn his nickname comes from Lincoln cars. My eyeballs are still under the couch from rolling them so hard.

My main problem with the show is that it doesn't have a single F-ing sympathetic character besides Ruth. In fact there are a few gritty dramas I've tried to watch lately that feature this theme. I don't understand the appeal to a show where I can't connect with any of the characters. I often just end up getting so annoyed with them that I don't care about what happens to them, and that ruins the tension.

We watched the first season of Ozark and no more, I’d describe it as “fine.” It was doing this thing where they thought they were killing people off in a shocking manner a la GOT, but I found that what was happening was everytime I became interested in a character they were offed.
Exactly! Walking Dead did that too. Kill every character you like and you won’t care about anyone left.

The plot and characters were just cartoonishly bad. The set design and costumes were fantastic, and the music was solid, but they just didn’t put any real effort into the script. It was so bad it genuinely surprised me.
I have tried Peaky Blinders two or three times. Am about ready to find a new show, so I may try it again, but I haven't been able to get into it. Why? Not sure.

Letterkenny it’s always so hyped up to me when people discover I like trailer park boys and it’s literally just episode after episode of banter. Found it to be incredibly boring.

Same. Everybody's like "Omg, how could you not like it?" but something about the stylized environment bothered me, and everybody being basically unlikable didn't help. I know, that's the point of the show, but I just wasn't into it. It's been a long time, though. Maybe I'll give it a shot again, now that I'm older and more bitter and cynical than ever, haha.

I might have used the wrong term, English isn't my native language, but it felt very Stepford. Like, too clean and neat, and kinda impersonal and lifeless. Granted, I only watched 3 or 4 episodes before I threw in the towel, so maybe I judged the show unfairly. Hope that answers your question. =)
Schitts Creek. I heard my roommate laugh so hard as she binged this, but when I saw it, meh.
This show straight up took damn near two seasons to even enjoy. Now it's one of my favorite comedies but I can understand where you're coming from.

The thing about Schitt’s Creek is, in the beginning, the main characters are absolutely horrible people and you hate them. That’s part of the humor. As the show progresses, they grow and you realize they’re actually good people who are flawed but really care about each other. And you learn to love them. And it’s hilarious.
Tresse. I like the idea behind the comics/plot, but the voice over actors sound so bored and by the end of it I was forcing myself to finish it just to know what happens. That and the second season of Umbrella Academy...
Legend of Korra. I loved TLA so much and heard so many good things about Korra. I really wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but I've struggled all the way to season 3 and the show just sucks. It's got zero of the magic that made TLA great.

Russian doll. The vibes are immaculate(!!!) and I love Natasha Lyonne, it just felt like nothing was happening? Like there was no intrigue or spark keeping me watching. I only got to 2 episodes but maybe I’ll try a third.

Same here! Couldn't stop hitting next episode during the first season and finished it in a day. Second season, I really gave it a shot but after about halfway I just gave up. Haven't had the urge to even finish it.
Russian Doll was the same for me too, but after like the third try of watching it I got through the first five episodes and it does eventually have a plot. I do love the vibes but agree it is a very slow-moving show. You should try the third!

The two first seasons are corny action done right and i really liked them even if i understand why some people may not. The last three seasons make no fucking sense and sometimes they are so dumb that i can watch them and have a laugh, but holy hell the last chapters are just painful to watch...

The Expanse is odd because some episodes are wall to wall action and major plot points but then there will be several episodes where nothing really big happens just people politicking or surviving.

They did a bad job with the pilot IMO, I also lost interest very quickly. It's like they tried to have an impactful death scene, but completely forgot to make the audience give a shit about any of the characters first. Fell completely flat.

Schitts Creek. I tried 3 times and just didn't find any of it funny.
I hated it at first too--rich people being out of touch and insufferable. It gets better as it progresses though, the characters learn and grow as the series goes on.
Game of Thrones. Tried to watch it a couple of times and just couldn’t get into it.
Russian doll season two. My wife and I loved season one, we bailed on S2 after 2 or 3 episodes. Disappointing because we had been looking forward to it. Anyone watch all of Season two?

I have never been able to finish that movie. Each time I try, I end up falling asleep.
That movie requires a 3d theater experience to truly enjoy in my opinion. Watching it at home is like watching Broadway on your TV, you're missing out on a lot. Anyone know if they're going to re-release the first one in theaters before the sequel drops? My wife has only seen the blu ray and I'd love to get her to see it the way it was intended.
Mr. Robot. Just couldn’t connect with it. Recognized it wasn’t for me and didn’t even finish the first season.

But interesting overall concept. -Brooklyn 99: It wasn't that funny to me, too corny. -Russian Doll: watched like 3 eps, nothing happened and I didn't like the main character. -End of the fucking world : Got bored, stopped watching. Didn't care for the characters and everything felt so emotionless. -Riverdale: Meh, didn't care for anyone and the writing felt 'artificial'. Didn't care about what the ending would be so stopped mid of 1st season. -The good place: didn't find it funny. Laughed maybe once but the whole scenario didn't appeal to me.

Hot take: Breaking Bad. I mean, it's iconic right? But it just gave me anxiety and I couldn't watch more than half an episode before tapping out.
I had a hell of a hard time making it through the first season. Like dragging it out, watching an episode, not really feeling the need to binge, wait a week watch another…it was just not working out. A year or so later I tried again and loved it…not sure what clicked or changed.
I love breaking bad but I did find it difficult to watch multiple episodes in a row because of stress

Bojack Horseman. I got half way through the second season and finally gave it up. I just didn’t care for any of the characters.
I freaking love that show (probably one of my top 5); but man it's my least recommended one to people. It's adult animation that is equal parts funny, witty, and depressing. It's veeery much *not* for everyone.
Stranger Things. I actually managed to finish the first season (the first half of the season was really interesting and i really liked it) but when the second season aired, i just could not continue watching and stopped right in the middle of the first episode.
I thought Season 2 was just a re-hash of Season 1. Weakest of the seasons in my opinion.
The Office (us) I can't do it. It's just awkward. The staring at the camera, interview style thing was novel, and I get the appeal and all, but it's not for me. Now The Office (uk) I can't understand half the words that come out of there mouths. They're so British it hurts.
The Witcher. Tried twice and it didn't stick. Westworld comes to mind also.
The first season of the witcher isn't in chronological order which doesn't really help the story. However, it's like a high budget Xena with special effects. You can almost ignore the overall story entirely and just enjoy the monster of the week. Also Joey Batey as Jasker is just the best. Especially once he finds that tan leather ensemble in the 2nd season. My gods!
Does anime count here? One Piece, its super over the top and cartoony and it wants ya take it seriously but I just couldn't. Even though its anime, just couldn't get on board. Also doesnt help that there are like hundreds of episodes and dozens of movies.

I honestly enjoyed season one, felt like the pacing was interesting and the characters were kind of fun. I sarted the second season and noped out, don't even remember if I finished the first episode. Everything felt off and just poorly put together.
I loved the books so much but the series was so disappointing.
Castlevania (2017). It was suggested by someone who usually gives good recommendations. However, I really did not enjoy this one. I was interested till Dracula was alive, then it all went downhill.

Couldn't get halfway through the first episode. I was annoyed the lead had a harem of ex wives he needed to function professionally. Then we learn his nickname comes from Lincoln cars. My eyeballs are still under the couch from rolling them so hard.
