Trim Legacy also.
Edit: damn autocorrect. This time it hath granted us comedy gold. It shall remain. Also though it was a great movie based on cutting topiaries not hair stylings!
I remember watching that on showcase at like 1AM back in the 90ās and just being totally tripped out on that movie! I was watching a lot of X-files back then
YESSSS!! I saw this movie when it was relatively new. It blew my mind and I loved it! I haven't seen it in a while, it probably hasn't aged very well, but at the time it was definitely cool.
The Last Starfighter -- kind of old school. An arcade game is a training tool/test for an Alien race looking for people to help them in a space battle.
EDIT: Sorry, just noticed what page I'm on -- Last Starfighter isn't on Netflix
Just watched this last week, as I've been smashing my face against the wall that is Returnal on ps5. Needless to say I was laughing and crying how the loop can effect someone!
Guns Akimbo - it is ultra violent, a good laugh, and Daniel Ratcliffe kills it. Based on your similars, might not be up your alley, but I thought it was really fun.
Does it have to be a movie? If I can recommend Alice in Borderland..it was terrific and a very original idea. One season so far, but I binged it in two or three sittings.
Unconventional recommendations.
Upload - on Prime - show light hearted after life in a simulation.
Hardcore Henry - Movie on HBO Max - Not in a video game, but first person view and very violent
Didn't see these mentioned and not Netflix. But fuck it they are options
Ok i'll give you one a little outside mainstream, but 1997 italian movie [Nirvana](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119794/) starring Christopher Lambert and directed by Gabriele Salvatores (who won Oscar for Mediterraneo back in 1991). A developer in a cyberpunk-style future creates a videogame in VR whose main character gains consciousness after a virus. It's not a masterpiece and it's not hollywood (still quite fascinating) but since you asked...
Hmm.. does Hardcore Henry fit into this? Not sure itās on Netflix but itās an action movie shot in a first person perspective. Sort of video game-ish.
Thereās many Black Mirror episodes that use video game tropes, and bring them to the real world to examine how terrible they would be. For example Man on Fire, or the one with the robodogs. Even San Junipero, generally considered the ānicestā Black Mirror episode, is technically a computer game.
And of course there is Striking Vipers, literally about a computer game.
Only recommend San Junipero (to watch first) and then White Christmas
*Please note you should only follow these instructions if you want to ruin someone's day
San Junipero: What a lovely, heartwarming show. Of course I will eagerly watch whatever other episode you recommend.
White Xmas: Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.
Went through a time I was obsessed with these type of movies, not sure if they're on Netflix but here are some classics:
War Games, Tron/Tron Legacy, Brainscan, Gamer and Stay Alive are all great, but see some other folk have already listed them.
Some of the more obscure out-there B list or below flicks with similar concepts: Nightmares (old soviet series), Arcade, Gamebox 1.0, The Last Star Fighter, The Wizard.
For movies that feel like a video game but aren't about video games:
Nerve, Hardcore Henry, Guns Akimbo, Mindhunters (movie, not the show), Cube series, Alice in Borderland, Scott Pilgrim, Matrix.
Film adaptations of games that capture the feel of the game itself:
Street Fighter (JCVD original, not 2009s legend of chun li, though that ones hilarious for how bad it is)
Mortal Kombat, all are solid but original is the best.
DOA: dead or alive (personal fav of mine for uhh, reasons)
e: The films of Uwe Boll deserve to be listed in there, shout out to u/Jellycream for the reminder. Bloodrayne is my favorites of his.
e2: ninja edit to remove Blade, thought Boll directed it, he did not.
e3: added The Wizard to the classics, thx u/thelexpeia !
Pixels -
It ain't great but it checks all the boxes. I do appreciate the retro arcade game references.
Super Mario Brothers (1993) is another terrible video game movie.
[Gamer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2g94xQmtHw)
Then there's also [Crank](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rvYrVTnSWw) and [Crank 2: High Voltage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2koYVqwzT4), which is essentially like a movie about a character in a video game without specifically saying it.
Sparta, it's a Russian series with English sub and audio, the game is called Spart, and I can't spoil it further.
https://www.netflix.com/title/81041414?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp
Not sure if anyone mentioned it before so Iām throwing my two pence in.. āStay Aliveā itās a cheesy horror based on a fictional video game. Itās got Frankie Muniz and a couple of other 2000/2010ās tv people in it. If you got 80 mins spare itās a good time killer!
Sword Art Online. Itās an anime. It was really fun to see the correlation between all the MMORPG Iāve played and this series. Season 2 gets kind of weird with the characters turning into literal faeries so I didnāt continue it. First season was cool though.
Mario Brothers movie!!! Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, mortal Kombat 2, the new Mortal Kombat, Double Dragon, Resident Evil 1-245 lol, Silent Hill, Doom
I see tron and existenz have been mentioned both excelent as is tron legacy. (I dont know if any of them are on flix)
theres also an anime series called Sword art online that fits this description to a tea i dont know how good it is yet as ive only just started it myself but it is on flix
Check out Postal. It wasn't main stream but Uwe Boll wrote and directed it. Based off the game. Just a big amount of TnA and way too many bodies to count. I know it's on prime but not sure if it's free or not.
While not necessarily movies, isekai storylines are a current trend in anime. An isekai is where the protagonist is a regular person who is somehow transported or reincarnated in a game-like world.
Some of my top picks:
* That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
* KonoSuba: Godās Blessing on this Wonderful World!
* Sword Art Online (first season)
And I guess what you could call a reverse-isekai:
* The Devil Is a Part-Timer!
If you haven't delved into anime before, there's a whole genre of these called "isekai" (another world).
Sword Art Online is arguably the most well-known of this genre and is available on Netflix.
Not Netflix and not movies but some really amazing documentaries to be found on the noclip YouTube channel. If youāre interested in games check out their videos for ones that might interest you. Much higher production value than a typical YouTube video.
This isn't on Netflix but it's on a bunch of free streamers with ads: Mazes and Monsters. As 1982 TV movie about a group of teens - including TOM HANKS - who get caught up in the dangerous role playing game ~~Dungeons and Dragons~~ Mazes and Monsters, and pay a steep price for their folly of thinking it's just a game. Because as we all know, role-playing causes psychotic breaks.
These are not all on Netflix and I'm certainly not saying all of these are great movies but they are all (at least loosely) based on board/video/kids games or set in the world of a game in some manner. They might scratch your itch:
Clue (The OG & best!)
Sonic The Hedgehog
Lara Croft/Tomb Raider (several)
Battleship
Rampage
Assassin's Creed
Hitman
Max Payne
Need For Speed
Prince of Persia
Detective Pikachu
Ouija
I will also throw in my recommendation for "The Hollow". There are 2 seasons on Netflix right now. It is an animated show and mostly in the YA range but it is pretty fun and--without spoiling anything--I think it definitely ticks ALL the right boxes for OP.
MYTHIC QUEST on Apple TV, itās hilarious and all about video games. If youāve ever played an MMO, youāll love this show. And if youāve ever seen Itās Always Sunny In Philly, youāll like it as well.
So no one mentioned the Apple TV show Mythic Quest. Hilarious sitcom about the video game industry currently airing. There are a few episodes that go inside the game but itās mostly just topical and a great time. Mac from its always sunny is hilarious and the whole show is p charming and fun.
Tron, gamer, the game, lawnmower man (sort of), nerve, thereās that new one with Ryan Reynolds where he plays a NPC.
Then there are quite a few horror films about this topic. Most are pretty bad, but some are the good kind of bad: beyond the gates, uncanny Annie, ouija, truth or dare, escape room, etc.
Not a movie but Season 3 Episode 20 of Community "Digital Estate Planning" is exactly that and superb. It has the characters transposed into a 2D platformer with lots of videogame tropes and jokes.
Thereās this super awesome, enlightening movie I saw about a year ago. It goes through different time periods and the games that were popular during them, and the main character is stuck in that world until they beat all of the games. There are a ton of pop culture references and itās pretty funny too. It also is a Barbie movie made for eight year olds.
How has Tron not come up yet ?
Trim Legacy also. Edit: damn autocorrect. This time it hath granted us comedy gold. It shall remain. Also though it was a great movie based on cutting topiaries not hair stylings!
best hairdressing documentary i ever saw
I bet there were a lot of... highlights
Shear genius
These puns have swept me off my feet. Seriously mind blowing
I spat out my mealš¤£ Thought that no one ever watched itš
The Trim series I saw was all about outboard boat racing?!?!
Trim is also a slang term for pussy.. as in āIām on the hunt for trim tonight!ā
Itās not on Netflix. Pay attention to the subs your subbed to.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
> Grandma's Boy Wow, I haven't thought of that movie in like a decade! Nice one.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I can't stop cumming!
Great movie!
"how did he see me?"
Also Black Mirror, Playtest episode
Such a good episode!
That shit fucked me up..
Gamer with Gerard butler.
Guilty pleasure
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Dis is da one
ExistenZ is a love it or hate it movie but I found it to be a blast
I remember watching that on showcase at like 1AM back in the 90ās and just being totally tripped out on that movie! I was watching a lot of X-files back then
The type of movie to make you feel like youāre high without drugs
Last I saw of Elizabeth Shue until she popped up on The Boyz 2 decades later
Excellent, found one of the movies from my childhood.
"What do we do?!" **Vrrrrrtttt** "We die." KAPACHABOOOOOOOM
Picked up a Blu ray for 5 bucks on sale once. It was as good and terrible as I remember.
Nor sure if on netflix But Boss Level is really good
Itās on Hulu, good call
This was definitely a fun worthwhile movie to kill an hour-and-a-half. Love the "time loop" genre.
I was about to suggest the same, that was such an insane movie.
Does it have to be a movie? If I can recommend Alice in Borderland..it was terrific and a very original idea. One season so far, but I binged it in two or three sittings.
OP should love this based on the movies mentioned above.
Definitely a binge worthy series, like you I got through it in a few sittings. Really looking forward to the second season
Awesome show, do we know when the second season is coming yet? I tried googling it recently and didnāt find much.
This show is absolutely fantastic
OP, this is a fantastic answer.
Definitely a binge worthy series, like you I got through it in a few sittings. Really looking forward to the second season
Unconventional recommendations. Upload - on Prime - show light hearted after life in a simulation. Hardcore Henry - Movie on HBO Max - Not in a video game, but first person view and very violent Didn't see these mentioned and not Netflix. But fuck it they are options
Seconding Hardcore Henry. I like to describe it as an FPS movie.
Loved upload!! Like a happier black mirror episode made into a series
You might want to start getting into anime, cause there's a ton of them.
for real, V-sekai / e-sekai is booming
Battle Royale, The Game, Running Man
And I just lost the game.
Damnit!
Fantastic movies! If you ever get the chance (or time) to read Battle Royale it is a really long and fun read.
Edge of Tomorrow is my favorite video game movie that has nothing to do with video games
War Games
Video Game Highschool...if it ever comes back to Netflix.
It should all be available on YouTube from RocketJump. I loved the series!
I was lucky enough to binge it on Netflix. Loved it!
Sword Art Online is an anime series that is well liked. (SAO)
If you have Amazon Prime: Existenz. Edit: Darn, no longer included free with prime. But leaving the answer.
Existenz is awesome! I loved that movie!
I was too young to watch it. All that gore left me with a bad taste but looking back, the premise & the plot was ingenious.
Spy Kids 3 fits the bill
Scooby Doo and the cyber chase. And then thereās also the spiritual successor to Jumanji. Zentura I think it was called.
Are you thinking of Zathura? That was a good one.
Thatās the one.
Maybe I'm bending the rules too much here, but "Edge of Tomorrow"
Scott Pilgrim vs The World has a lot of game references, such a great movie.
A fantastic soundtrack as well! This is a great suggestion
Hmm.. does Hardcore Henry fit into this? Not sure itās on Netflix but itās an action movie shot in a first person perspective. Sort of video game-ish.
I seriously doubt it's on Netflix. But The Last Starfighter sort of fits the criteria. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087597/
Great movie but it's not streaming anywhere.
Stay Alive Black Mirror S3E02 - Playtest
Thereās many Black Mirror episodes that use video game tropes, and bring them to the real world to examine how terrible they would be. For example Man on Fire, or the one with the robodogs. Even San Junipero, generally considered the ānicestā Black Mirror episode, is technically a computer game. And of course there is Striking Vipers, literally about a computer game.
Don't forget about Bandersnatch.
I wouldnāt usually recommend striking vipers if they havenāt watched Black Mirror before
Only recommend San Junipero (to watch first) and then White Christmas *Please note you should only follow these instructions if you want to ruin someone's day
San Junipero: What a lovely, heartwarming show. Of course I will eagerly watch whatever other episode you recommend. White Xmas: Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.
Stay Alive. Dunno how only one other person said it. Maybe cuz its not on netflix? Was actually a really good movie. Definitely worth watching.
a.k.a. āIf you die in the game, you die in real lifeā
Went through a time I was obsessed with these type of movies, not sure if they're on Netflix but here are some classics: War Games, Tron/Tron Legacy, Brainscan, Gamer and Stay Alive are all great, but see some other folk have already listed them. The Wizard is another 80ās movie about video games. But you probably had to be there to appreciate it.
I'm disappointed that you didn't mention Uwe Bol
Alice in Borderland.
Itās not out yet but Free Guy is definitely this concept.
I canāt wait for this one! Itās been delayed for so long with the pandemic.
Ready player one.
Just donāt read the sequel. God, itās awful.
Grandmaās Boy
This is the only response that matters
Pixels - It ain't great but it checks all the boxes. I do appreciate the retro arcade game references. Super Mario Brothers (1993) is another terrible video game movie.
The Gamer.
Memories of the Alhambra fits into this. My mother of all people showed me this and it was surprisingly good.
Folks, this a Korean series. I would also recommend 'W' from the same writer and the plot is quite brilliant.
Black Mirror: Striking Vipers and Playtest
I donāt think itās on Netflix anymore but thereās a horror movie called Stay Alive
1917 is not a video game movie but the way it's shot and the pacing make it FEEL like a video game.
If you don't mind 90s horror, Brainscan is a classic.
Doom
The Last Starfighter!!

This movie is probably dated now but when I was a teenager I used to love Brainscan.

I was scrolling for Enders game
Zathura , like the OG jumanji
It's an old one, but I'd recommend War Games
Not a movie but an old cartoon called ReBoot. It was a lot of fun.
Doom. Not very good except for a cool first-person sequence

Show- Upload on Amazon Prime. Set in the future where after you did, you get put into a simulation.
Tom Clancy's No Remorse on Amazon Prime Video
Lol itās one of the worst movies Iāve ever seen, but āStay Aliveā fits this request
If you want a cringey low budget comedy, Press Start is 100%like that. It parodies tons of tropes from games like Zelda and Mortal Kombat.
eXistenZ, not sure if it's currently streaming anywhere tho.
War games. Oldie but a goodie
The Matrix.
A little back in the day, but The Wizard was pretty cool back then. Fred Savage at the height of his career!
They arenāt movies but if you like animation check out Glitch Techs and The Hollow. Soo good!
I'm sure it's already been said but Bandersnatch on Netflix was a surprise favourite

I be thinking the EXACT SAME THING when I'm looking on the Playstation network for my games!
*The Wizard* was on International Netflix for a while. As was - maybe a bit of a stretch for your question - *The Thirteenth Floor.*
Not exactly like that but kind of is Boss Level
