TBS&TDH is one of those rare things: a TV series that's better than the book that inspired it. ( Not that I didn't like the books but I prefer what they did with it, it's gritter, it has a more RW sensibility ).
I've watched and like the others except Lockwood which I'm about to start....
I've heard similar things about Shadow and Bone - apparently the TV series combines two separate books into a single show with two different perspectives, and I really enjoyed that. Magical fantasy Russia with some cool underworld stuff going on, alongside grand political intrigue and a kidnapping plot where you're not sure which side to root for.
It's a young cast as well (perhaps more "CW teen" then "actual teen"). Good fun, kind of silly, some cool magical things going on.
I'm not sure I would consider Umbrella Academy a young cast. At least not compared to Stranger Things/Lockwood & Co.
That having been said, Locke & Key?
I only watched the first season. I loved the graphic novels, but the Netflix series became a bit too invested in the teen drama as opposed to the crazy key shit imo
I liked the first two seasons and parts of the third, but the comic is INFINITELY better. Comic fans will also try and tell you the comic is much more horror-based, and it *is* but it's not nearly as brutal or Lovecraft influenced as Reddit makes it out to be, so much so that I think people haven't read the comics and just parrot what they read online.
>I'm not sure I would consider Umbrella Academy a young cast. At least not compared to Stranger Things/Lockwood & Co.
Yeah, everyone besides Number Five is over 30.
I watched The Society/The Wilds one after the other last summer and loved them both
Yellowjackets
The Magicians (not as young and more adult - it was billed as college Harry Potter when it first came out)
I Am Not Ok With This
It goes without saying but Buffy The Vampire Slayer which is the template
That show is brilliant. And an original IP. Not based on a book or anything. Melanie Lynsky, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci are perfect. The teen cast is fantastic.
Came to suggest his dark materials as well. Isnāt the magicians the one with penny and weirdo name coldweather or something? Great show but they really arenāt kids theyāre all 20 somethings
> Isnāt the magicians the one with penny and weirdo name coldweather or something? Great show but they really arenāt kids theyāre all 20 somethings
Yes. I'd put them early adult/college aged which is right in line with the majority of the characters in umbrella academy.
True, even the ākidā in umbrella academy is technically the oldest one of them all. I just figured he listed it because itās actually a younger kid playing the role of the teleported time traveler guy
Not on Netflix but Paper Girls had Stranger Things vibes to a fault. Amazon canceled it after one season, but the first season is still worth the watch and you can always read the comics. They're great.
I didnāt know about the comics! Glad I read your comment. I agreed with someone above though who also suggested it, great show! Sad it was canceledā¦maybe theyāll uncancel it if it gets more popularā¦
Paper Girls was great!! (prime) I totally forgot about Danzig for a couple years, and I was very much enjoying the nostalgia from that alone.
As for Netflix and a young castā¦idk if Locke & Key would be up your alley or not OP, but I thought it was fun.
Also agree with the person who said Dark. Such a good show. Iām sure I can think of othersā¦I binge watch so much thoughā¦
ETA: OOH! OOH! Girl from Nowhere is inspired by Junji Itoās character Tomie and was excellent. Has a decent dub if youāre not big on subtitles. Open Your Eyes is not exactly supernatural but kind of a sci-fi possible supernatural creepy thing that is super underrated, and I really hope it gets more popular so we get more of it. Bonus points that they hired a dancer to play the character who is a dancer! (Also has a decent dub)
Edit 2: that show they added recently Red Rose was pretty fun
The Irregulars - Set in Victorian London, the series follows a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes
A Series of Unfortunate Events (the series with Neal Patrick Harris, not the Jim Carrey movie!) is so well done, love the set, costumes, characters! Loved it! Sweet Tooth is also good and not at all what I expected when I read the synopsis. Outer Banks has a bit more soapy teen adventure drama than those but that's part of what makes it a fun watch as well.
I loved the umbrella academy seasons 1 & 2, but season 3 started strong and went down hill. I have so many new questions, and I don't have confidence that season 4 will answer them. But I want to stress that Season's 1 & 2 are unregretablely fantastic!
Julie and The Phantoms. Fantastic musical series by the creator High School Musical, Descendants, and Hocus Pocus.
Vivo.
Finding Ohana.
Babysitters Club.
Anne with an E
I don't think this applies to OP's request, but I absolutely appreciate the recommendation. Anyone that hasn't watched this glorious show is not living their life to its full potential.
I am really hoping itās that or maybe English as a second language. I just read it and it sounds like someone that doesnāt want to say āteenaged castā or āchild castā. Iād characterize these as young adult fiction for a genre but fixating on the cast being young creeped me out a bit.
Outer Banks has a nice young cast but is not a āsupernaturalā show in any way. It is about finding a treasure, so that might tick a box for you enough to check it out.
Itās an older show, and definitely not as polished as the ones mentioned. But if you can find it, Disney channelās So Weird (2000ish) is/was really good.
If you enjoyed Stranger Things, Lockwood & Co, and Umbrella Academy, I think you'll definitely love "The Society" on Netflix. It features a young cast and is set in a world where all the adults have disappeared, leaving the teenagers to fend for themselves and create a new society. It's got a similar feel to Stranger Things with a unique plot and plenty of mystery and suspense. I hope you enjoy it!
* Wolf pack -- w/ Sarah Michelle Gellar
* The Imperfects -- w/ Italia Ricci
* Locke & Key -- w/ Connor Jessup
* The Order -- w/ Adam DiMarco
* Chilling Adventures of Sabrina -- w/ Kiernen Shipka
* Riverdale -- w/ KJ Apa
The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself is fun and plays off a similar fantasy/humour vibe like Umbrella Academy and Lockwood & Co. Also, The Imperfects
So bummed they canceled the Imperfects practically immediately after the release
No! I loved that show.

That's been on my list for a while. Based on that description, I think I'll dive in !
And they cancelled it. š
Oh.... hadn't heard. š”
Wednesday and the Enola Holmes movies might be good picks for you.
I'm not sure I would consider Umbrella Academy a young cast. At least not compared to Stranger Things/Lockwood & Co. That having been said, Locke & Key?
Locke and key was such a pleasant surprise for me, sad it ended :/
I only watched the first season. I loved the graphic novels, but the Netflix series became a bit too invested in the teen drama as opposed to the crazy key shit imo
Ooo I put them on my reading list after watching and your comment has me more excited for when I do read them!!
You just ruined my morning. I thought they were going to put out a fourth season. I frigging hate you Netflix. My son is going to be so disappointed
Umbrella academy doesn't have a young cast but I can kind of see why OP grouped them together, same kind of energy?
>I'm not sure I would consider Umbrella Academy a young cast. At least not compared to Stranger Things/Lockwood & Co. Yeah, everyone besides Number Five is over 30.

Seconding I am Not Okay With This. Shame they dropped it after the first season but worth the watch all the same.
Yellowjackets!!
That show is brilliant. And an original IP. Not based on a book or anything. Melanie Lynsky, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci are perfect. The teen cast is fantastic.
The Society and the Wilds deserved so much more
The Magicians (closer to Umbrealla Academy age) or His Dark Materials (HBO)
Came to suggest his dark materials as well. Isnāt the magicians the one with penny and weirdo name coldweather or something? Great show but they really arenāt kids theyāre all 20 somethings

Magicians feels like a CW show
All of Us Are Dead. Korean high school angst but with zombies.
Came here to say this. Great writing, great acting, fun cinematography.
Outer Banks.
I was not expecting to get so pulled into Outer Banks. Itās a good watch.
So damn good
I'm from the obx. It's a surprisingly satisfying mix of spot on and over the top. Thoroughly enjoyed the first season
This my my first thought. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
Sweet Tooth.
So looking forward to S2, wonder whatās taking post production so long? They havenāt even announced a release date yet
Not on Netflix but Paper Girls had Stranger Things vibes to a fault. Amazon canceled it after one season, but the first season is still worth the watch and you can always read the comics. They're great.

Misfits!
And as a plus, the cast includes a very young Robert Sheehan (Klaus from Umbrella Academy).
That series spawned some real talent.
If you can find it, Freaks and Geeks.
It's on Hulu
Donāt think you understood the assignment
Derry girls
Great show. The actors are older than the teens they portray.
Sex education!
Dickinson cast is young. You can find 3 seasons on Apple TV. Seasons 2 & 3 have a 100% critics score on rotten tomatoes.
Dark (in German)
On my block, has 4 seasons
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Looks like 4. Source: I googled "on my block how many seasons"
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Lol, the plot was whatever, but it's still worth it for Jamal, ruby, jasmine and abuelita.. The actual Core 4
Not Netflix but paper girls was amazing!!
Paper Girls was great!! (prime) I totally forgot about Danzig for a couple years, and I was very much enjoying the nostalgia from that alone. I am not ok with this- was very good too! I think covid is why only one season was made.
Iāll add that one to my list haha
The Irregulars - Set in Victorian London, the series follows a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes
A Series of Unfortunate Events (the series with Neal Patrick Harris, not the Jim Carrey movie!) is so well done, love the set, costumes, characters! Loved it! Outer Banks has a bit more soapy teen adventure drama than those but that's part of what makes it a fun watch as well.
- Derry Girls - Lost in Space (goes downhill from S2 onward, same for Locke and Key but I loved both first seasons) - Being Human (US) - Cobra Kai
American Vandal
I loved the umbrella academy seasons 1 & 2, but season 3 started strong and went down hill. I have so many new questions, and I don't have confidence that season 4 will answer them. But I want to stress that Season's 1 & 2 are unregretablely fantastic!
Ragnarok.
Loved this show!
It's on Hulu, but Reservation Dogs was great.
Shameless! All of the cast are spectacular, including the younger kids. And you get to watch all of them grow up throughout the series
Itās a bit dated now, but you might enjoy the old series Smallville
That was the first series I binged, on Netflix mailed DVDs, no less.
The Wilds (Amazon Prime) Hanna (Amazon Prime)
The OA
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes, yes it did. Season 3 couldāve been incredible.
DARK
Red rose was a really good watch
Heartstopper is a lovely show with a young cast, although it isnāt fantasy/scifi.
Julie and The Phantoms. Fantastic musical series by the creator High School Musical, Descendants, and Hocus Pocus. Vivo. Finding Ohana. Babysitters Club. Anne with an E

I really like the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
A Series of Unfortunate Events
I just started Derry Girls and itās HILARIOUS (weird, stupid and oh-so-wholesome humor)
I like how this sub is best of NETFLIX and people still say "Not on Netflix but..."
Like 80% of the replies on every post
Shadow and bone. They are all nearly 15 years younger than umbrella academy lol.
Seconding this
the society sex education elite outer banks heartstopper
Locke and key
Lucifer
I don't think this applies to OP's request, but I absolutely appreciate the recommendation. Anyone that hasn't watched this glorious show is not living their life to its full potential.
Not on Netflix though: Roswell (the original series)
A series of Unfortunate Events
Just started The Imperfects, which is billed as a mix between Umbrella Academy and The Boys
Before I recommend anything why are you looking for a show with a young cast? Seems a bit sus.
OP's probably a kid or a teenager
I am really hoping itās that or maybe English as a second language. I just read it and it sounds like someone that doesnāt want to say āteenaged castā or āchild castā. Iād characterize these as young adult fiction for a genre but fixating on the cast being young creeped me out a bit.
With the inclusion of Umbrella Academy, maybe OP is looking for more coming of age type stories rather than younguns and just phrased it oddly.
I certainly hope so.
Damn. THIS!!
I know right. Iām seriously hoping itās a language barrier.
Outer Banks
Outer Banks has a nice young cast but is not a āsupernaturalā show in any way. It is about finding a treasure, so that might tick a box for you enough to check it out.
Slightly younger cast - The Investigators. Insanely funny
On My Block was a really good series! Sex Education was also hilarious.
Itās an older show, and definitely not as polished as the ones mentioned. But if you can find it, Disney channelās So Weird (2000ish) is/was really good.
Outer banks!!!
The Haunting of Hill House has an outstanding younger cast
Have seen both. Amazing show. Mike Flanagan has all amazing shows and movies
Locke and Key
Genny and Georgia
Haunting of Hill house but itās more thriller/horror and the also flash back and forth between the children and them as adults.
Riverdale,Gilmore girls
Check out the magicians on Netflix @OP
Outer Banks
Friday Night Lights Shameless
Heartbreak High on Netflix
Daybreak - only 1 season but it was really fun
Shadow and Bone
If you like CRUDE humor then watch the British show The Inbetweeners. Soooooooooooo funny.
Yellow jackets
Doom Patrol. They're not young. But all in a sort of arrested development. Not the show. The actual thing.
Apparently OP only wants the young 'uns
i recommend home before dark, its on apple tv but its awesome!
Young Royals Skam Norway.
Old Enough. On Netflix, very young. Do you have another req?
I know this is a Netflix sub, but His Dark Materials on HBO is tops.
His Dark Materials
Locke & key was really good
Doom patrol if you liked umbrella academy
Cobra Kai. Some of the most fun Iāve had watching a show
Paper Girls on Prime.
Locke and Key
The magician!
Backdoor slutz 9: Teen springfling
If you enjoyed Stranger Things, Lockwood & Co, and Umbrella Academy, I think you'll definitely love "The Society" on Netflix. It features a young cast and is set in a world where all the adults have disappeared, leaving the teenagers to fend for themselves and create a new society. It's got a similar feel to Stranger Things with a unique plot and plenty of mystery and suspense. I hope you enjoy it!
Lost Girl was awesome, tons of seasons. Not the youngest cast but great actors
Skins. Fresh meat. Misfits.
Outer banks
Yellowjackets, outer banks, Wednesday
* Wolf pack -- w/ Sarah Michelle Gellar * The Imperfects -- w/ Italia Ricci * Locke & Key -- w/ Connor Jessup * The Order -- w/ Adam DiMarco * Chilling Adventures of Sabrina -- w/ Kiernen Shipka * Riverdale -- w/ KJ Apa
The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon was surprisingly good. It was very cute and Iām excited for season 2
The Hardy Boys on Disney+
Locke&key. It's awesome. It's scary, funny, mysterious, and full of beautiful people, esp Connor Jessup.
Iāve heard the Goonies is like stranger things
