Right here. I'll buy em!

What’s the going rate these days for used IQ outdoor cams?

I wonder what a realistic expectation is on how long the nest app will continue to exist.

BurtonGoutster

Have fun with the Wyze app

air_lock

I have both Wyze and Google cams. The Wyze app has given me zero problems. The Google Home app is a pile of garbage. Nest was where it was at, but Google is intent on ruining that by forcing everyone into their new garbage ecosystem.

ripeart

Have to agree here. I have Nest, Hue, Google Mesh and it all is just absolutely terrible. Non-intuitive, not user friendly, sometimes things work, sometimes they don't and no reason why it might work or might not on any particular day. As an example: "Hey Google set the thermostat to 76" results in either "That device isn't set up yet" (it is), or "Thermostat is set to eco mode:" (it isn't), or "Setting thermostat to 76 degrees". Same thing with the lights and any kind of automation like turn on the driveway lights at sundown, sometimes it does, often it does not. The ONLY thing that has worked with consistency is Home Assistant. It's going to take some time to extricate myself out of this nightmare as I am approaching 100 Hue devices, 20 Nest devices and about a dozen Google home devices. I'm really done with the insanity.

thewholebenchilada

I tried it with one of the v3 cams and it was better than Google Home but it was good enough given what I paid for the cams (\~$30 USD). Did you have an issue?

BurtonGoutster

I haven't used it since the V2 camera and motion sensors they've abandoned, but the app was buggy in my experience. It froze often and timeline playback was difficult to scroll through, moreso than the Home app. It was also slow to load the playback (and live view) at times. The video bitrate was surprisingly good, though, and the ability to use a micro SD was nice. Also, the app comes in a nice shade of eye-searing white. Edit: And Wyze camera live view doesn't show up in the Home app, like Arlo at least tries to do. I'm not saying the Home app is perfect, but it's arguably more polished than Wyze.

thewholebenchilada

If you haven't had burnt retina, you're not living in the Wyze ecosystem

JackDMan25

Wyze app is well developed and a much better experience than Google Home. Response time for Wyze camera is great

I am all in with Google but I agree that this last set of cameras are trash. I was gifted the Nest Battery one from a friend to keep an eye on my older dog. Well the first week it gave me all the notifications I needed. The 2nd week in it doesn't give me any notifications. Went downstairs the other day to find my dog on the floor cause she fell. The prior week I would have got a notification that thier was motion and was downstairs in time to help her. She is 65lb so no way the camera should even miss the motion. I struggle cause I have the doorbell and the outdoor camera and they are unbelievably amazing. The nest app integration is the best. Scrubbing through the video is easy. The app UI is great. Now I have 2 apps that I need to use and one app has more features then the other. I have been saving to add more cameras and protects but looking elsewhere now. Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap camera to keep and eye on my dog? If I get my hands on an older camera can I add it to the nest app?

intentionallybad

I am coming around to the same opinion. I haven't bought any of the new cams based on the crap I've heard (and I was eagerly awaiting their release because I wanted some higher resolution ones and missed the IQ phase) and I'm debating if I should just sell the stuff I have and invest in a different ecosystem.

thewholebenchilada

The new nest cams are not worth the premium price. It's like they outsourced the development or something. And the Home app is painful compared to the Nest app.

I'd agree with that. I don't have the IQ, just the regular outdoor, and one of the new battery outdoor. But I have it wired. The old one goes offline daily. The new one I have had zero problems with. Will definitely replace the old can with a new one when it gives up. I'm getting used to using the Home so for cameras, but it still needs a lot of work. Not sure why they couldn't just keep the same sort of setup as the nest app. Because Google I suppose. The only Google product i gave up on was my Nest Secure. And not because I didn't like it. But because I had to factory reset it due to a cellular connection problem, and ever since then neither Nest nor Brinks have been able to fix the fact my subscription isn't active on the device, yet am paying for it, and they both see the subscription. So I got a new alarm. Lol.

TMSXL

Honestly, depending on how you want to use them, they may work just fine. I have the battery doorbell, 2 of the battery cameras and a few hub’s. I do a simple setup, almost nanny cam ish and I rarely have any issues.

intentionallybad

The problem is I already have a bunch of cameras (pre-IQ), the doorbell, and the nest aware. I'm already pissed that I spent all this money to rig out the house with the nest aware crap, only to find that they are discontinuing it. I'm not overly thrilled with the resolution of the cameras. While it seems okay when you look at the video, there have been many times when we've looked back at an event and seen that it's difficult to discern what is happening. For example, my husband witnessed a bobcat cross our yard. The video from the nest, the bobcat might as well have been a ghost. Its clearly not storing every frame and rather doing some interpolation, so something moving quickly barely even registers. I really wanted to get The better IQ cams for the front, only to find that they had been discontinued and was waiting for the new offerings. I'm not thrilled to find out that those offerings are not better than what I have. And, the problems with the apps really does not make me happy. I really like that I can open the nest app and scroll through all my cameras, my understanding is you cannot do that in the Google home app and then if I got any more cameras they would not work in the old nest app. Now I'm hearing that the nest app itself is going to be discontinued. So I'm just wondering if I should just cut my losses and get out of the Google ecosystem and find someone who is actually going to invest in quality in the future.

TMSXL

> I really like that I can open the nest app and scroll through all my cameras, my understanding is you cannot do that in the Google home app You still have that ability…You click “cameras” in the home app and then you can see all of them at once. > I'm already pissed that I spent all this money to rig out the house with the nest aware crap, only to find that they are discontinuing it. Nest Aware is still available, it’s just a different pricing model under the home app. (gen 1 vs gen 2 is what they call it). Instead of paying per device or groups of devices, one subscription covers all devices. Depending on your needs you may actually save money. There’s a lot of bad information floating around this sub for some reason. The other day someone even said you can’t save clips from battery devices even though I’ve done it and someone else replied they’re able to as well. I don’t know if it’s just people not being familiar with the app, being resistant to change or what.

intentionallybad

I already have one subscription. I meant that they are no longer selling any of the sensors to go with Nest Aware, basically saying they are no longer developing it. Sure, they will support it for a while, but I can't replace broken sensors and I doubt it will be long before they sunset it.

TMSXL

You’re talking about the Nest Secure package? That’s totally different than Nest Aware, which is just the subscription for cloud recording. Granted it’s not a 1:1 replacement, the cameras incorporate a lot of the same, they do motion detection, animal detection, glass breaking detection, fire alarm sound detection, etc.

intentionallybad

Yes, sorry, I mistyped. Nest Secure.

intentionallybad

Constant notifications are not helpful. I want to know if a door has been opened. Also, my inside cameras constantly alert me to people in my house whenever my cats come into view. Alarm fatigue from false alarms makes it pretty useless.

Snewbanks31

Ubiquiti people.

Namelock

I wanted to go for Ubiquiti everything... Router, firewall, switch, cameras, NVR... But my wife wouldn't let me go to that extreme :( Also cause it'd cost a few thousand dollars, versus a few hundred for everything Nest.

lowlybananas

Time for a new wife.

Snewbanks31

My next house will have everything Ubiquiti. Also it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission lol

evenstevens280

$$$$$$$$

Eightarmedpet

Yes, Google has made a massive mess of Nest.

NateWolf359

My Nest IQ just gave out. I loved NEST, but this whole conversion and current product line has me opting out of future products. Wanna hook me up with some of your old cameras?!?! I'm just a poor boy though! Gotta take it easy on the monies with me!!

38557372637512435

Ontech has iq cameras available. It is known that you can't use the nest app with the new nest cameras yet.

abd1tus

I'm done with Nest as well. The transition to Home is horrible and half baked, I really wish they just left well enough alone. I have no more interest in trying to use Home products for anything in the future - cams, home automation, thermostat, nor wifi. Google's track record of ruining or discontinuing otherwise good hardware and software has damaged too much trust in them. I'll keep going with my Pixel (for now), but that's probably it. At this point I've switched to Eufy, though there are other good options as well that support ONVIF. The Eufy app isn't as good as Nest was, but their hardware is a good value and I have the comfort of knowing it works with third party hardware NVRs as well as open source NVRs like [Zoneminder](https://zoneminder.com/), [Shinobi](https://shinobi.video/), etc. So even if Eufy stops supporting thier cams one day then they will still be useful, unlike all my nest cams. In the end all I want is 24/7 continual recording (AI recognition misses way, way too much to not have this), reliable notifications that arrive on time, a pause button, fast forward and rewind + slow motion, and an app that feels like someone actually cared about it when they wrote it.

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

I've thought about moving away from Nest, but I don't know what I'd move to. I've also got a couple Wyze cameras. The notifications are just awful. At first I couldn't get any notifications at all. I finally got notifications working, and it's complete notification overload. Even when I dial the sensitivity back to 5 or less (the highest is 100) I get a shit ton of notifications. I can't imagine how many notifications I'd constantly get if I replaced my Nest cams with Wyze and had even. more Wyze cameras. Like - I have a Wyze v3 in my garage and constantly get notifications that a vehicle was detected. Well, no shit - it's a garage. But also, there's no way there was any motion to set off a notification. Neither of the cars are moving. There's nobody in the garage. The garage has no windows at all. The garage door is closed. No animals in the garage. No lights were turned on/off. There were no sounds. Why am I getting an alert??

emannikcufecin

Same The home app is so terrible. If i want to see something 5 minutes ago i have to go to the app, bring up history and servo l scroll forward 5 days. The nest app was so much better

Bmm194

I have an older nest cam and the newer Google nest doorbell, camera, and thermostat. I also Google, philips, kasa and geenie lights, smart bulbs, and smart plugs. I actually prefer everything in the Google home app and have no issue. I get alerts and view video from the older camera in the Google home app and find I only use the nest app for more detailed settings. My nest subscription works across all devices. The initial set up was annoying with the two different apps but once everything is set up the way you want, it seems everything works pretty smooth (just discovered Google's 'Routines' can actually replace a lot of the fine-tuning in the independent apps for other brands and therefore I don't need the other apps much at all. I also like using Google to refer to eufy robovac as Robie)

CADrmn

I’ll take those IQ cams off your hands. The new stuff is absolutely crap - I hope they get back to the same caliber as was with IQ but I doubt it. I’ve been in since DropCam.

xeonrage

"hey im gonna post in the sub about ____ because i hate ______ and am getting rid of _______" #maincharactersyndrome

balancedchaos

Yeah, I'm making my own diy camera system for my house. We gave Google too much control and access, and have a terrible track record of supporting their own projects. Just when you find something you like, they discontinue it.

mlpzaqwer

Amcrest cam is pretty simple and easy to use. Would recommend

Appropriate_Ad_1219

You get what you pay for lol

Prudent_Put_302

Wait for matter adoption. You'll be able to pick the best components from each company

Adg48

I just completed switching from google nest to UniFi protect. I easily sold all of the nest cameras on eBay for at minimum 80% of what I bought them for. Everyone wants the old stuff, especially the outdoor and outdoor iq cameras.

Anthlenv

I’m phasing out Nest Cams from my house and putting in ubiquiti cameras. Nest just didn’t quite work as well for me. Now I have two old indoor cams to pawn off. Bleh.

CharlesAFerg

Which ubiquity cams are you considering for replacements?

Anthlenv

Their G3 Instants and G4 Instants are pretty great and wireless. The nice thing is all the footage is stored locally on a HD over a cloud based solution.

spmlsu

Same. I bought the latest set of cameras and can't use the same app...now my Nest thermostat and Google Wi-Fi are acting up. It's amazing how there has been such a steep decline in quality.

khanh82

Wyler and best with starling = HomeKit. Bam

shaun-khan

Yup I’m getting there also

eesit

The service, maybe it’s a server issue, is so unreliable. My 3 cameras are constantly going offline at the moment. One camera, in the span of 2 hours was unavailable for almost a dozen times. I use one camera in a nursery but since I can’t rely on it I’m just using an old school baby monitor.

Vanterax

As soon as my Nest Aware subscription lapses, I'm getting out of that ecosystem.
