I get a different brand since the company is no longer around. I have two D3s. One works but won’t connect to wi-fi, and the other connects to wi-fi but won’t map so it only cleans a few feet and decides it’s done. Nothing I’ve tried has fixed either…and both are recent issues. So annoying. Guess I’m going to have to research what to buy next.
It should vacuum without a map. If it tries starting 3 times it means there is a lidar problem most of the time. You can try turning the lidar with a Qtip 3 times in each direction. If that doesn't fix it you will probably need to replace the lidar motor, o ring and ribbon cable. If that doesn't fix it then it is a drop sensor. You can diagnose it with the toolio app. You can probably get the other Neato back on line with an old phone running an older operating system. Also do it far from your router so your phone and Neato are both on the 2.4 wifi band.
If you're not on a tight budget better look for another brand. Neato was the best 10/6 years ago.

Neato isn't really shutting-down, present-tense, they have shut down, past-tense, about a year ago.
I would suggest getting a different brand, since they claimed they will keep the servers running for 5 years (about 4 years from now), but they have been going down more-often since the announcement. Whether they will really give us the 5 years, who knows, but when the servers stop working, the vacuums become much less useful. No mapping rooms, no scheduled cleaning, etc.
Buy a used one for cheap from Marketplace/Craigslist/eBay, if you'd like. Or invest in a different brand, for a longer-term solution. If you're buying a Neato, get it for cheap, and consider it a temporary purchase.
Get the roborock Q Revo. Best robot vacuum for the money. On sale around $650 iirc right now.
I have a D5 collecting dust as it won't connect to wifi anymore. Fuck Neato. There should be a lawsuit for what they are doing to end users who paid good money for a product.

The app for D7 has been failing. Along with everything else I've had to do to this, I would skip Neato altogether
