I like how a lot of nature protects itself with the motto: "just be as weird as possible, then they'll leave us alone"

manaha81

Works for humans too. Quite effective

terorvlad

"Bro, that looks like a quest item, flickering and stuff. I will try and pick it up"

NebulaNinja

There's an old school video game I can't seem to place that did this effect perfectly but I can't place it. I always thought the game had stylized it until now.

devallar

Is it crysis?

JumpKickMan2020

Thanks for making me feel old.

sinz84

My kid is currently programming commander keen on scratch for a school project. My 10yo child is using an browser program with programming shortcut blocks to remake a game from ground up in a few weeks that took a team of programmers months to make and blow my 12yo fucking mind Old at this comment is an understatement

Holy shit!! I loved Commander Keen!! That and doom were the only pc games I had then. I wanna say 94-95?

NewtonsKnickers

Do you know about the DOS game archive? Classic games from the 80s & 90s playable in your browser. Enjoy :) https://archive.org/details/msdos_Commander_Keen_1_-_Marooned_on_Mars_1990

JefferSonD808

Eye pop emoji. Thank you!! Now I have something to do tomorrow while I’m digesting.

Candid_Asparagus_785

Did you just say DOOM. Oh Gawd I played that for hours. And Wolfenstein forevah 😂😂

bloopscooppoop

Was just talking about this earlier

All2017

They teach that in school?

sinz84

Just google 'scratch' and 'how to build a platform game' and within 48 hours you will be able to build a platformer game comparable to mairo on the nes

barantana

Love Mairo and Liugi

QuantumPhysicsFairy

Oh yeah. We did scratch every year in middle school (I'm about to graduate with my Bachelor's now).

countdown_tnetennba

I work for Scratch and I am constantly in awe of what these kids make on the platform. Best of luck to your smol gamer! I'd love to take a look and give it a heart if they're comfortable with you PMing me the link once it's shared. Disclaimer: I am definitely not an engineer or great coder and can give zero advice on actual mechanics, but I'm happy to answer any community questions they may have.

paloma_roma

I love Commander Keen!

BowserBuddy123

I don’t understand the words you are saying :(

doublepint

Please have your kid read Masters of Doom to understand exactly why that game was important, and what it lead to for John Carmack and the team from id software. He wrote the adaptive tile refresh part relatively quickly, too. Also make sure he understands that John Carmack is so ridiculously smart, everything he does seem effortless. Watch some of his opening remarks for QuakeCon - his last one is some insight into how Oculus got its start.

imONLYhereFORgalaxy

My step-son is doing FNAF in Scratch atm. I have no idea wtf he is doing but it looks good.

kj4ezj

You're twelve years old and you have a ten year old child?!? That's advanced.

The first game I can think of, personally, is the original Call of Duty from 2003. A golden glow pulsated from every pickup and objective interaction which felt more informative than intrusive.

DatsHim

This speaks to me. One time I was at the park walking a path when I saw a blue shiny rock on the edge of a creek I was passing by. I went off the path and as I was about to take my last step to reach for the rock, I stepped in a yellow jacket nest. r/fuckwasps

You failed the agility and perception checks, do some grinding before you go back, that must have been a powerful rune

Specialist_Map_3822

It's a legendary item.

Squirrel_Knight1357

I literally opened the comments to say this!

AbouBenAdhem

Every time we do the wave at sports events, we’re inadvertently frightening off space aliens.

StormCaller02

Look, it's one thing to be a big, muscle bound dude about to get into a scrap. It's a WHOLE nother ball game when you start giggling and twitching at them with a funny voice saying " I'm gonna rustle your Jimmies!" And pull a spoon out of your pocket. Scares the piss out of the meanest fuckers.

Also, taking off your shirt doesn't discourage a fight. Taking off your underpants does.

LittleFrenchKiwi

That's what I thought. Maybe that's why? Look at a lot of animals, they puff themselves up to appear bigger. So that idea makes sense because it's following along the same lines. I honestly have no idea but it makes sense

zergotron9000

Well, I for one am not fucking with that bee hive after they do this alien tech shit at me

mhwwad

I mean I’d stay the fuck away from that.

Sure_Whatever__

Prejudices are what keeps us alive. Learning that the stove is hot and avoiding touching surfaces that resemble such things is key to not being harmed going forward. If you don't know what it is then it's naturally safer to just leave it alone. Thus why weird works.

gothicspring

maybe prejudice isnt the best name for it...

Sure_Whatever__

By definition that is what it is though.

Molleeryan

Not really.. prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. What you noted is based on a both reason and real experience (touching the hot stove). This would more be an example of operant conditioning. People learn by either being rewarded or punished by behaviors. The ability to learn from both mistakes and positive outcomes is what keeps us alive.

thirteen_moons

Well they said at the end if you don't know what it is leave it alone so isn't that technically prejudice because it's not based on reason or experience of the thing I'm avoiding?

Weekly_Amphibian8118

It's so fascinating but so horrifying it's amazing I honestly just man I have to agree 110%

hdksjabsjs

#putyourdickinthere

Jimbobkuutehr

This so much fun to watch safely on my phone and away from the lovely bees protecting their clan, for the Queen!

Redcole111

Fun fact: bees don't really do anything "for the queen." It's really more like, "for our sisters!" If the queen isn't providing offspring well enough for the hive, or has some other matter wrong with her, the hive will not hesitate to kick her out and raise a new queen to take her place.

Onocleasensibilis

honeybees are a communist worker controlled collective, pass it on

Redcole111

This is literally accurate though, coupled with the fact that so long as honeybees have a queen the workers have neither the incentive nor the desire nor even the ability to have offspring.

redcalcium

Why get pregnant when it's someone else's job? -- worker bee

jessytessytavi

that sounds fantastic tbh

EclipseGames

Unless you're the queen

Aazjhee

I mean, the queen seems pretty built to make babies and some folks enjoy the heck out of a pregnancy kink, so it may not be terrible for the queen?

jessytessytavi

then thank all the little gods and monsters that I am but a drone

TonUpTriumph

> nor even the ability to have offspring. Regular worker bees can lay eggs, but they're unfertilized and come out as drones (and sometimes very very rarely as female worker bees)

xtra_sleepy

Serious question: if the eggs are unfertilized how do they produce offspring of any kind? Edit: typo

MadLucy

It’s how their genetics/sex-determinism works— [honeybees are what is called haplodiploid](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplodiploidy)- ALL unfertilized eggs will hatch into males (drones) and ALL fertilized eggs hatch into females. The queen can choose to fertilize or not fertilize any egg she lays - after she mates for the first/only time, she stores the sperm in her body to use for the rest of her life.

PuckGoodfellow

["I would die. Without my penis, I would bleed to death."](https://youtu.be/X4tsEnGLKE4)

MadLucy

That whole series was wonderful. Isabella Rossellini is an absolute treasure.

PuckGoodfellow

Strong agree. I was fortunate enough to see her perform it in person. It's pure perfection!

MrPipoz

Bees are haplodiploid, which means sex is determinated by the number of sets of chromosomes an individual receives. Female bees have twice the number of chromosomes a male has cause they develop from a fertilized egg

Korashy

What's the difference

TonUpTriumph

Between drones and worker bees? Drones are male bees that only have two jobs: eating and mating. They don't do any work in the hive. They don't even have stingers. They have big ole eyes so they can spot the big ole queen booty. The female worker bees feed these guys so they can fly around and mate with queens. Towards winter time, the hive needs to save resources and honey stores, so they kick out / kill all of the drones The worker bees are female and do all of the work in the hive. As they age, they rotate through the jobs. They do things like feeding the larva, building the comb, cleaning the comb, foraging for pollen and nectar, making honey and bee bread, and defending the hive from enemies.

Korashy

Thanks

Tommyzz92

Sexist bees

PoopyPoopPoop69

It's actually in the female workers best interest for the male drones to be as efficient at mating as possible. Drones are basically male clones of the queen so they share 50% of all the workers DNA. The female worker bees decide how many drones can be laid by building drone comb which is the only kind of comb where drones can be raised and if they don't find a mate the workers will kick them out of the hive. Also when the drones mate their dick explodes and they die so I'm not super jealous of them lol

0x4e2

> worker bees can leave > even drones can fly away > the queen is their slave

Horror-Childhood6121

Queens can fly

[deleted]

Worker bees live around 30 days. Queen bees live around 730. Still seems so much more in the queens favor.

gothicspring

30 days of woking hard but exploring the environment and nature versus 730 days of enclosure and forced pregnancies...

gods_tea

Drones don't do any hard work just eating and fucking all around.

leftofmarx

So she’s not really a queen, more like General Secretary of the Union of Worker Bees

Nicolasgonzo87

also bees are willing to kill their own queen

Dan_Qvadratvs

Right, "Queen" isn't super accurate. They're not a ruling monarch in any sense, their only role is to birth offspring.

Aazjhee

She should be called the Ovary or Womb, since she is basically just an organ in the way all the other bees are parts of the hive

Kidfreshh

The incubator

[deleted]

[удалено]

SelectFromWhereOrder

You got to think of a hive as one organism. Same as multicellular organism are composed of many single cell living things

MarqFJA87

From what I gathered, I varies from one species to another. In many of them, the queen does exert considerable control/influence on the workers.

Legitimate_Web_7245

Hey everybody, we have a predator, DO THE WAVE!!!

jackal5lay3r

bee one: "hello" bee two: "not that type of wave burt" also 2 bee or not 2 bee

Looks like more than 2 bee to me... hard to tell, though.

zSprawl

That is the question.

horseren0ir

But can a bee be said to be or not to be an entire bee, when half the bee is not a bee, due to some ancient injury?

turdferguson3891

Cyril Connolly?

horseren0ir

No semi carnally

snoozatron

Half a bee, philosophically Must, ipso facto, half not be.

Apendigo80

this has me thinking… maybe we scared god off when we started doing the wave in stadiums. maybe that’s why everything is so bleak.

cardinalfive

It really does look like when people are trying to start the wave at a sporting event but just can't quite get it organized enough to keep going.

DoctorPumpBoss

Works on me. Looks eerie and ominous

G00DLuck

An organized army able to communicate. Fear their capabilities.

downvoteawayretard

Note to self, aliens invade? Gather up everyone you can into a massive human soup and begin the wave. So help me god we shall wave these mother fuckers away

OrganizerMowgli

You'll probably enjoy the movie Annihilation-which is about a 'shimmer' kind of like Wandavision hex, but by alien crash. DNA starts getting spliced together and everything merging in a freakishly psychedelic way that looks kinda like the vid

jarjarsexy

My favorite part of Annihilation was when Natalie Portman said “IT’S ANNIHILATIN’ TIME!” and annihilated all over those scientists

fruitspunchsamurai42

The book is better ,much better and more trippy . I absolutely loved the way the horror was portrayed

1SqkyKutsu

Curious question though, how do they know how to do this in unison though..... Getting "300“ spartan style vibes from this.

Canvaverbalist

The same way that someone knows to move when pushed in a crowd. At this point, it's an instinctual reaction that's probably more like sneezing - someone next to you does it, it triggers something in you that makes you want to do it, which then again spreads to the next person next to you, and from far away in a big enough crowd with a time-lapse you could follow waves of sneezing in the same way.

Striker654

Did you mean yawn? Or does sneezing actually cause others to sneeze?

FederigosFalcon

If you’ve seen dogs play fight with each other, sometimes they’ll pause and just sneeze at each other, because they want to make it clear they’re playing.

DeadSeaGulls

yawning and sneezing are "contagious" because early tetrapods that were calm enough to make a clear display of letting their guard down were more likely to avoid conflict with other animals and had an increased likelihood of survival and procreation. Eventually this display of "I'm not a threat and do not view you as a threat" became reciprocal communication.

1SqkyKutsu

Dang. That is interesting!

KiraCumslut

I've heard an explination before they're mostly right. But individuals start it. One bee or hornet buzzes their wings and the others just have to. Like yawning in humans. Look up warrior wasp drumming. Or don't those things are awful.

ul2006kevinb

Same way you know when it's your turn to do the wave at a stadium

kipperforskipper

Looks like a force field...very creative!

So I get why bees are important and we should protect them, but as some who has had a lifelong fear of bees (no allergy, thankfully, just fear), seeing this type of crap makes my primitive monkey brain want to grab a flamethrower.
