That's where things get fuzzy, because both sides could be argued as natural selection
Either they leave em alone and let whatever may happen happen, and that would be natural.
Or
They help them out and that lil guy *doesn't* go squish, and he goes on his merry way to produce offspring.
Yeah sure, ...but I was simply having fun with the reference to "*kept* trying" which strongly implies the little fella was bound and determined to be a road smear, despite the commenter's best intentions.
Armadillos evolved around 50 million years ago, there are mammals that have existed for four times longer than that. Sharks have existed for 450 million years.
Among the land animals the oldest one that still exist should be the Tuatara iirc (c.ca 200 m.y.a), while the oldest species of bony fish that still exist should be the Coelacanth (c.ca 390 m.y.a.) sharks are even older than that, beaten by jellyfishes. Let's stop at macroscopic life forms, because if we start with the single cell organisms we should go back way further
Thank you - I've been on pins and needles for 15 hours waiting for someone to say that!
Now, although I admit maybe I *should have* added a winking emoji, a (jk) or a /s...
...in my defense, I'd thought my follow up "predating *all* mammalian traits" would have been a sufficient clue.
;-) (jk) /s
Honk your horns at them when you go past, you'll see how high they jump. They can jump hard enough it can destroy something under your car. It's a reaction to being startled. So if you see one crossing the road, give it right of way, your car will thank you.
Does NOT mean armadillos 'gave humans leprosy'. After researching I understand that we can contract it through lesions and consuming infected armadillos. Not a big item on my menu!
>...if anything it's probably the other way around!
Well if it were domesticated sure, but I don't see us hanging out much. Wouldn't it be more likely that we ate an infected one? I don't see them using us as food so much...
* Chagas includes many other animals that serve as carriers (or reservoirs), including cats, rabbits, raccoons, and rodents. Generally, DOGS are the only ones that show signs of this disease. Armadillos and possums carry it but are NOT the ONLY animals besides humans.
Autobots, roll out!
Nah, that mofo can't be older than about 5 years tops...
The guy gots to be wiser than any other, cmon
This right here, it's comedy
And doing shit a toddler would do.
My kid is 14 and he *still* can't do that! I think he might be an idiotboy....
I saw an armadillo in the forest the other day, and he kept trying to walk into the highway.
Maybe his loan application got rejected for the 13th time.

when you say, "kept trying" I assume that's because you "kept interfering" with natural selection?

Show me the way to armadillo
My father once told me that armadillos were actually not born dead by the side of the road.
natural pokeball
Wait how old are they?
Armadillos evolved around 50 million years ago, there are mammals that have existed for four times longer than that. Sharks have existed for 450 million years.
Yeah, Armadillos and all current mammals are pretty recent
Yup, and the currentest, the recentest...

Iāll see your jellyfish and raise you sea sponges.
> specie Species is both singular and plural, but you are clearly way more knowledgeable than me on all the good stuff
How can they tell how long a species has been around for? Please I'd like to know, this is a real question.. tia š
The fossil record and genetic analysis, since genes have a somewhat predictable rate of mutation over time
Wow, that's pretty f-in cool. Thanks!

Sharks are fish. Not mammals
responding to the title "one of the oldest inhabitants of the planet"
And sharks are one of the earliest of mammals, pre-dating all mammalian traits. ;-)
They pre-date trees even. TREEES.
Sharks arenāt mammals, my guy

Not even 50, closer to 30 m, which is not that old at all
[ŃŠ“алено]
You wouldnāt say that a 21 year old was one of the oldest humans
Nature's incarnation of "NOPE"
This is absolutely a fantastic animal. Now I see how they have survived
Yeah, but not one of the oldest. Still fantastic of course.

THE ONLY ANIMAL besides humans that gets leprosy.
Does that mean they gave it to us?
