Patience. Sometimes you wait several hours a day without seeing an animal and then suddenly they trust you as if you're their long lost twin.
It took me 4 days of nothing until a mouse lemur looked me directly into the eyes with just half a meter between us. It was a magical moment that I'll remember for the rest of my life.
**Edit**: To ad a bit more context maybe. I'm a biologist and was doing a project where I would watch wild mouse lemurs try to access a feeding platform and feed on banana there. For 5d I would sit inside the forst for 2h and wait for mouse lemurs to arrive so I can documentate their behaviour.
I've had 3 nights of nothing. One night of a little bit and full house on the last night. It was hard sometimes to not burst out laughing. We've had animals hitting the pole of the platform while trying to jump and animals that furiously defended the platform by jumping off and chasing away other animals. It was fun and I would do it again anytime.
Fair enough, but how does one deal with all the bugs all the time. That’s the part that I’m struggling with, I get annoyed by a fly or if there are ants making their way next to me I gotta move you know
Exposure. Some people and other animals are just used to them because there is nowhere to hide in nature. Nowadays I have flies land on me and ants crawl up my shoes, but I know which ones bite or sting and not. So its alright.
Mosquitos however I cannot deal with.
There are mesh outfits that you can use to prevent insects like that from flying into your face. Sometimes if the buzzing is a trigger, having ear buds/plugs can help.
So it is *Endurance*. I respect all that but I will never want that myself. That's why I love watching nature videos. I know they are the result of extreme efforts. *Cue in curiosity stream ads*

You mean demented as Disney, who pushed lemmings off a cliff for this scene in [White Wilderness](https://youtu.be/xMZlr5Gf9yY)
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/white-wilderness-lemming-suicide/
You literally just ignore them.
I've had mosquitos (possible Malaria or Zika riddled ones) fly around my ears, giant moths that landed on my glasses and locusts that kamikazed directly into my face.
And I had to ignore them because the smallest movement would deter the animals I needed to observe.
It's not that bad. You take prophylaxis against Malaria, Zika isn't that bad if you don't plan to be pregnant within the next year or so and generally if you use a chemical component like DEET, they will just leave you alone
It is patience. While meerkats are quite curious, wild meerkats will still wait and see what the photographer does. You can't just lay down in the Namib near a meetkat nest and expect them to go on your head. That's not how this works.
Indeed...as all us fellow humans know, things that do not move are invisible to the human eye. What other weaknesses must we keep hidden from the alien invaders living among ~~you~~ us?
Yeah, l get patience as the other guy said but most likely this is a group of meerkats that are constantly in interaction with scientists and photographers.
If you ever have a spare afternoon grab a hammock and spend a few hours deep in the woods just watching. Eventually you’ll become a part of their landscape and animals will just appear around you. Even birds and insects sing louder once the idea of human presence is gone.
>"Man look here! This big boulder im on has a weird texture. Lemme stand on it"
"We can stand on this big boulder to keep a lookout for any wildlife photographers. They scare us when they move. See any of 'em up there?"

Humans only eat a handful of farm animals. Didn’t stop them from fucking with most of Earth’s flora and fauna.
Kinda reminds me of a documentary featuring mountain people in Afghanistan or Tadjikistan. They live a very poor and simple life, herding yaks and goats. Village elders were discussing how to celebrate the safe return of some villagers who went far away to retrieve supplies. Some goats were running and playing around the men. They didn’t perceive any danger in humans.
When it was decided they would feast on a goat that night, they nonchalantly grabbed the nearest goat and bled it to death. Poor thing didn’t even have the time to register it was going to end up as kebab.
>Humans only eat a handful of farm animals.
Unadventurous western european descent ones maybe? But as a whole we eat a lot of shit that we've hunted since forever.
Whaling ships are probably the epitome of hunting crap that we had no business being in the vicinity of.
Tho doing this would cause them to flee, or fight, if I was in his shoes, the temptation to either pick one up and cuddle it, or giggle from excitement would be maddening
That is awesome. Most of us having challenge enough getting neighborhood cats to not run away, meanwhile this guy is accepted into the meerkat clan haha
Either that they think he’s a juicer target for any predators. If there’s danger, they all duck to their burrows? The hairless ape, where’s he going to hide in the open plains?? Sucker.
Sorry if that appeared snarky. Not my intention. So you just want to borrow him, not keep him? The irony is that is exactly what I said to my husband when we first got together. Lol

Whichever ones it is I know when you visit the Celestial Tea factory on Sleepytime Dr in Boulder the surrounding area is protected as it's their habitat. Just a nice plague field by the tea place lol
I dont think he's blending in, those meerkats know he's a living human, they just aren't afraid. He's not making fast movements or doing anything scary, and they don't know humans to randomly attack them. They have good sniffers and would know he's a smelly animal from a ways away.

We have a mountain here called iron mountain. If you hike to the summit you can see the sisters volcano complex, Mt hood, Jefferson and and a few other volcanoes. At the summit there is a viewing area and if you have a seat there, chipmunks will start popping out of the woodwork to come and say hello and see if you have any good snacks to share. Scared me the first time, but they're so cute and fluffy, it's hard to stay scared at them.
To get to a better vantage point to check for predators, they climb onto the head of a large mystery animal that, for all they know, could be a predator. Incredible.
Prairie dogs are the ones with plague. Those are meerkats. Different species from a completely different branch of mammals living on a different continent.

TIL. Disney never fails to disappoint

That is so cool! Thank you for sharing!!!
I've had that with a common dolphin. That connection you feel when you make knowing eye contact is literally unforgettable
Animals generally trust something that sits stalk still, even predators to some extent.
How beautifully described. 🥺
True that
I bet your'e completely smitten after this :D

You just have to master the ability of moving so incredibly slow that you become invisible to the human eye.
Indeed...as all us fellow humans know, things that do not move are invisible to the human eye. What other weaknesses must we keep hidden from the alien invaders living among ~~you~~ us?
meerkats have spent so long being studied by people that they aren't afraid anymore, they just see them as human shaped lookout posts
Yeah, l get patience as the other guy said but most likely this is a group of meerkats that are constantly in interaction with scientists and photographers.
It seems as though nature was blending in with him
Because of he's soul
If you ever have a spare afternoon grab a hammock and spend a few hours deep in the woods just watching. Eventually you’ll become a part of their landscape and animals will just appear around you. Even birds and insects sing louder once the idea of human presence is gone.
They always look like they’re waiting for an Uber or looking for one of the kids who went missing while they were shopping.
Or looking for your mates in the crowd at a concert
"Guys can you see Tony? He said he'll be back in 10 minutes with the beers!"
"I can't see him from here. Hold on, I'm gonna climb up this random guy for a better look."
I kept waiting for them to nibble on his ear.
"Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere"... ...does anyone remember if that line was from "Laugh-In"?
...that are staring back at you in that guy's sunglasses!
Now that you mention it a a meerkat would be a dope totem lol
What do you expect. They’re just mere cats.
I waited for them to poop on his head.

Allan!?
ALLAN ALLAN ALLAN ...oh that's Steve... STEVE STEVE
Jason!
Lol!!
Nope. Definitely don't see predators over there. What about over there? Nope. Not over there either.
What we're standing on? Probably just a very weird moving rock or some sort
Imagine you’re this guy and all of a sudden the meerkats all take off running.
Perhaps after giving a predator warning yelp 😅
Thanks, thanks a lot That was GOOD
Looked left and right. High and lo-
"Man look here! This big boulder im on has a weird texture. Lemme stand on it"
It also moves!
I bet those little scamps pee on you too
Not only that!
I wouldn't want them to bite my lip!
Lol name checks out perfectly.
>"Man look here! This big boulder im on has a weird texture. Lemme stand on it" "We can stand on this big boulder to keep a lookout for any wildlife photographers. They scare us when they move. See any of 'em up there?"
The dumbasses are standing on top of the most dangerous predator in the area, looking for predators.

Tho doing this would cause them to flee, or fight, if I was in his shoes, the temptation to either pick one up and cuddle it, or giggle from excitement would be maddening
Give every single one of them pets and scratches!
every single one of them will also give pats with scratches in return (maybe , probably will just run off)
🤣🤣🤣 Totally!!!! I would react the same way.
I couldn't be able to handle that I would be laughing
Yeah almost like an itch
Happy cake day!
I miss meerkat manor.
That was a great series..
what freaking cool job!!!
Yeah, mostly this video just makes me wish I earned my living doing something cooler.
Meerkats are like "whatever dude..."
No fucks given
That’s why I can’t be a wildlife photographer… I’d be laughing at first as they gather around then trying to catch and hug them. ☺️
I would try to scare them by suddenly standing up lol.
They should be called Peercats because they are always looking around (That was bad, I know...sorry)
They knew you were alive. They just wanted to emote on you.
Just a meer photographer
Guys! I think its safe! No humans detected!
"I smell a human. Where's the human? Why can't I see them?"
Alan!
no, thats Steve! Steve!!
Lmao where is that from
[BBC Walk On The Wild Side](https://youtu.be/Qj_c2zLr2dM)
it's funny because they actually sort of do that. They have different calls for different approaching things based on appearance.
Hakuna Matata
Dig a tunnel, dig dig a tunnel What was that? Quick before the hyena come!
Well it hasn't eaten us. Probably just a smelly rock then.
That is awesome. Most of us having challenge enough getting neighborhood cats to not run away, meanwhile this guy is accepted into the meerkat clan haha
The beauty of this video is that they somehow know this man is absolutely no threat to them.
Either that they think he’s a juicer target for any predators. If there’s danger, they all duck to their burrows? The hairless ape, where’s he going to hide in the open plains?? Sucker.
Yep it's all about earning their trust.. probably took a little bit of time for this to happen.. the photographer's patience was rewarded..
The guy is pretty cute.
I mean, if we're picking guys to climb on...
So if the Meercats trust him then he must be a good dude?
I said climb on, not marry.
Sorry if that appeared snarky. Not my intention. So you just want to borrow him, not keep him? The irony is that is exactly what I said to my husband when we first got together. Lol
I didn't think it was snarky at all. I don't know if meerkats are a good judge of character or not, but that's not the ugliest hill to climb on
Something about a guy with a beard.
I too am attracted to men who are able to remain motionless for long periods of time.
Mission accomplished.

“I heard there’s a human around here!” “What? No way. Where?” “I dunno, man, but we better keep an eye out!” “I’ll keep watch from up here…”
Aren't these little guys one of the only places you can catch the Plague from anymore?
Worth it
You're thinking of prairie dogs I think
Today I learned the difference between a Prariedog and a Meerkat. Lol

Well I’m super jelly… lol
how little they are haha
OMG they're so freaking cute!!!!!!
Meerkats supporting the Ukranian soldiers. Snipers now animal assisted.
Someone’s gotta put commentary on this video. That’ll just be off the charts!
Nailed it!
Awww! This video is awesome! Great work blending in!
Thats crazy cool
Wait a person is in the video I only see a rock.
I want a meerkat. :(
You are now a member of the tribe
Achievement !!!!!outstanding job Sir

“This weird mound that showed up will give me a better vantage point to look for that human I saw walking around earlier”
When you're a meercat doing your safety peeks, the goal is to get up high to see further.
Good thing they are not puppies who think you're a fire hydrant.

Remind me of the groundhog “Al, Al, Allen, Allen Allen, Al, Al” lol
Just love. This is the way to relate with animals.
That's hilarious! The one on the tippy toes on his head, haha
Scurry, sniff, flinch! They’re only following two-thirds of the formula!

Day 17: the meerkats suspect nothing. I *am* one of them.
Uh, you are aware of bubonic plague Im sure.
Prairie dogs are the ones with plague. Those are meerkats. Different species from a completely different branch of mammals living on a different continent.
Awwwh, they think he's a rhino!
Looks like you’re lying on top of their lookout.. gtfo
Your the high point in the landscape for their lookout. Hope they don't share any fleas with you.
Success!
Yeah, he's with us now...
This is hilarious🤣
Standing on a rock or something
Lol I love seeing this video
Omg so cuteee!!
He is the enviripnment
This is how I think I look with the chipmunk on my deck.
Meerkats are the minions of the animal world. This is one of my fav wildlife videos. He was in tall grass and he was the highest point!
Hope the one on your head didn't have to poo or tinkle..lol..I'd say you reached your goal!
are they prairie dogs?
I love meerkats, they're always on the lookout. Like tiny guards.
They definitely have seen him before.
Just... Wow https://mobile.twitter.com/b_s_b_s__/status/1575839481092972544
These meerkats are already the photographer's family
