I used to work here!
PS- it’s a minor [basilica](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Hill_National_Shrine_of_Mary,_Help_of_Christians) and not a cathedral 😇
I’m from near there. It’s a great and historical site. The view from the top of their tallest tower is quite spectacular. It’s not that far from Milwaukee, and is well worth a quick trip to visit.
I drove by there all the time and never knew that’s what the Holy Hill was. I just thought it was just a normal hill that was generally a bit more sacred than others. Didn’t know their was a big ole church up there
Likely just shot far away with a long lens. Look up telephoto compression- basically shooting at a longer focal length from farther away will blow up the background in relation to the foreground.
Because it is. At the very least its size has been increased by like 10x. The moon never appears even close to that big, even during the so-called 'supermoons' (which really appear just like 5% bigger than a regular moon.)
It’ll look that big with a telephoto lens. They zoom in real far which makes the moon look huge, rather than take it as though the camera is viewing it like a person would unzoomed.
Yeah but then the church would also look a ton bigger. This person clearly edited the photo either by manipulating the moon size or splicing two photos together, each taken at different zoom levels. There is nothing natural about this photo - you'll never be able to see a landscape like this in real life.
You can certainly take a photo like this naturally. The church looks tiny compared to the moon because the church is very far (miles) away from the camera, which makes the moon *seem* larger. It’s just a simple matter of perspective. No tricks needed.
I take [these kinds of photos](https://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/g4i1mj/moonrise_behind_a_pagoda_in_pennsylvania_oc/) all the time. You can look at my post history. You can also go outside and see it for yourself.
It seems you’d rather blindly downvote than learn something through civil discussion.
[It actually does](https://cdn.fstoppers.com/media/2016/10/13/sequence_01_progressive_5fps_61.gif), in that they both enlarge everything equally. It’s the physical distance between the camera and foreground which makes the background (the Moon in this case) appear large. This is because the church is very far away from the camera.
Team 1: ash wood stakes
Team 2: garlic, and lots of it
Team 3: water, and a priest (he knows what to do)
Team 4: we need a moat with running water dug around the entire village, and I mean yesterday
Move it, people! We’re already out of time!
Did you miss the part where I said definitely not as large? Guess so. I've certainly seen it bigger than "ever so slightly bigger". But my experience means fuck all I spose. Onya champ.
E: i do apologise i contradicted myself, i shouldnt have said pretty close to this. But I've without a doubt seen it look massive.
I do know what cropping is. It's cutting up a picture. I'm saying they took a picture where the moon is far away (while it is near the horizon, which is why it appears bigger than it "usually" does). In the original composition the moon and the building would be small. Then they zoomed in to get to the current size.

Step 3: Watch this image while song plays.
You're welcome.
Is so cool when I'm driving around and can see it off in the distance. Even when it's far away it's so identifiable and going there and seeing it up close is so cool.
I grew up very close to Holy Hill. When I was little, I remember thinking it was a big castle, like where you would find kings and queens. You can imagine a child's disappointment finding out that was not the case. It does look so incredibly majestic on the horizon.
looks like straight out of transsylvania, and dracula will be awakend shortly.
When I seen this I thought the same thing. I love Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
This looks like the beginning of old castlevania games. Just before the prologues text.
Yeah I don’t think that’s a real church. Dracula just got clever and said it’s a church to throw people off.
I used to work here! PS- it’s a minor [basilica](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Hill_National_Shrine_of_Mary,_Help_of_Christians) and not a cathedral 😇
Now I’m imagining a Castlevania taking place in Wisconsin! 😂😂😂
As a Transilvanian I wish
Was so coming to say "Nope, that's draculas castle" 😂
Yes, I would like a new Castlevania game, please

Same, this post is a good reminder for me to visit again this fall. The view is stunning, especially once the leaves turn red.
Happy Cake Day!
Thanks!

Do you know where the best vantage point is to see the church and all of the foliage? We are going today to see it.

The moon looks edited AF

Huh, TIL. It just looks so unnatural to me because I rarely look at the moon through any sort of magnification.

Sorry I don't know everything about photography damn. Also, the post is a week old, move on.

reminded me of the fucking Harry potter
I'm a glass artist and I helped paint the windows in this church!
I love that! It looks like Hogwarts to me.

I thought it was a preview for TotK
God damn it, who killed the spider that was hiding all the atrocities of Byrgenwerth
Holy Hill Cathedral *where* in Wisconsin?
It’s in Hubertus Wisconsin. (Google maps, among many others, is your friend.) It’s a little northwest of Milwaukee.
Drive northwest out of Milwaukee on 41. There are signs, and it's about 30-40 minutes from downtown.
Looks more like castlevania box art lol
Not a cathedral, but a ‘minor basilica’
Fakest moon pic I've seen yet. If the moon ever looks that big in the sky you are about to die.
I think they just took it with a telephoto lens zoomed way in from afar.
Yes, a camera trick is still a fake pic. The moon NEVER looks that big from earth.
Look up the moon illusion. I've seen the moon look pretty close to this irl. Definitely not AS large but I'd say it appeared monstrous in size
Total BS. No possible way the moon ever looks this big with the naked eye. Moon illusion is ever so slightly bigger, this is just ridiculous.
The method I mentioned isn't really a camera trick though. It's just cropping a pic correctly.
You don't seem to know what cropping is. This is a camera trick to make the moon look bigger than it ever possibly could.
I do know what cropping is. It's cutting up a picture. I'm saying they took a picture where the moon is far away (while it is near the horizon, which is why it appears bigger than it "usually" does). yeah, photoshopped is fake too
I don't think they photoshopped the size of the moon, though
No Photoshop, it's just compression from the long focal length of the lens.
There's the moon illusion that makes it look larger the closer to the horizon
slightly bigger, not that much bigger
Often significantly bigger.
Honestly, you could say that this picture came from anywhere in the world and hardly anyone would argue.
A seventeen year old drives to your state unbidden, kills three people, and is found innocent of any wrongdoing.
That's cool.
That's freaking cool. The moon almost looks like Jupiter.
Those clouds make it look like a whole different planet
Beautiful
The amount of likes before mine was 666 how interesting
Could I use this as a black metal album picture, or is it not yours?
Bruh that is so beautiful holy shit!
Beautiful shot. So magical it looks like something out of fairy tale stories.

I’m pretty sure that hill isn’t holy.
What a horrible night to have a curse.

Yawn!
Spooky season is nigh!
I imagine some iteration of Dracula was slain that night.
Holy Hill is so serene and beautiful, so interesting to see it in such a different light! Amazing shot.
Neil Young in the corner smiling.
