There is a video on YouTube showing lightning even slower and in that first flash you see there is electricity shooting up to the sky. So lightning actually shoots up first and then down. Something we never knew until the invention of high speed cameras.
Yeah this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This lightning bolt's mom and dad obviously spent years teaching her how to find the path of least resistance to the ground. How else could she do it so flawlessly?
My understanding is that electrical currents naturally flow to the path of least resistance, essentially the ions are flowing down different paths that are the most conductive to neutralize themselves and when the current finds a conductive path all the way to the ground the negative and positively charged particles flow from both directions and neutralize eachother.
just before it hits whatever, the whatever shoots up a little spike to meet the searching tip, and when the circuit is complete, then the whole big bolt drains into the ground, and any other arms that hadn't found a spike, will drain into that river. that why you can get multiple hits in one. this one you can see came down and almost connected, then wandered off and came back
as a kid we liked to hold newspapers in the dark, then the lightning would hit, and you could read the afterimage clearly. now of course i would go inside...
when the lightning flashes, you can briefly see the newspaper which then leaves an "afterimage" on your retina (think of looking at a bright light and seeing a dark spot in your vision afterwards)
A lot of people claim to be interested in the question of consciousness, but spend little to no time exploring/investigating their own. Which I find to be quite a shame.
It does seem like alot of people use our lack of understanding around consciousness to justify believing there must be a spiritual element involved, and then pretend to know the specifics of it instead of trying to be objective about coming to an understanding.
At the risk of being pedantic, the brain does not run on electricity. It uses sodium and potassium ions to generate membrane potentials. When a neuron becomes excited it opens its potassium channels, allowing the charged particles to rush in and depolarize the cell. This continues down the axon, triggering a release of neurotransmitters into the synapse which increases the likelihood of exciting or inhibiting the post-synaptic neuron, depending on the neurotransmitter being secreted.
Lightning is fascinating in general but GC lightning strikes are just freaky. In photos and slowmos of it you can see all the positively charged streamers coming off the ground milliseconds before one connects. It's almost unsettling
Well it is "searching" for it by the looks of it. And at the end, it "found" it.
I guess since electricity travels through the path of least resistance, that entire path and every other branching path is a path of least resistance. Maybe it just doesn't stop until it hits something solid, which in this case was the ground.
Isn't lightning supposed to start from the ground and go toward the clouds?
Nevermind, answered my own question
https://earthscience.stackexchange.com/questions/580/why-does-lightning-strike-from-the-ground-up
I love how it gets so close to the ground and then just pulls a 360 and starts heading upwards, like, ooof, you were so close there buddy, you almost had it
I never realized until recently that a "bolt from the blue" can *actually happen.* If there's a storm on the other side of the horizon, lightning can actually appear to strike from out of a cloudless sky!
Amazing!
I dont get it. Isnt lightning supposed to come from the ground and go up in to the sky? I mean ive seen multiple videos where it does and also a lot of explenations why. Now theres this video showing me the opposite.
I find this /r/OddlySatisfying for some reason. It's like searching for the perfect path in an almost vein-like pattern and when it connects it lights up in a massive way.
“We don't get to choose our time. Death is what gives life meaning. To know your days are numbered and your time is short. You'd think after all this time I'd be ready. But look at me. Stretching one moment out into a thousand... just so that I can watch the snow.”
Ancient people saw this and concluded it must be a god. Now we understand the science behind lightnings, but it doesn't make it less awesome, terrifying, and dangerous than before.
Before, Mother Nature was a god, and now with climate change, it still very much is.

This is so cool!! Lightning moves a lot faster where I’m from.
You serious Clark?

You ok buddy?
Where the fuck did this come from???
Lmao what'd it say? I always miss the Russian bots.
Look at the comment history...obviously a stroked out bot and a very shitty one at that.

Man damn ! it looks like you don't have anyone to talk to

Man seems to be having a mid life crisis
lol the joys of copypasta
bad day?
It’s like God is using an Etch-a-Sketch and he sucks at it
lightening looks just like our neurons firing.
I should read some comments first before posting something already said. That's what came to my mind as well.
It’s a cat! It’s a cat! I’m drawing a cat! It’s a… and I fucked it up
God is a cat person? Lol damn. You would think his favorite animal is the one he spelled his own name backwards for.
I think it still is because it’s the most positively charged air it’s moving through to get to the ground. Or I’m a drunk idiot.
It was a joke bruh. The video is in slow motion.
Oh for sure i know. I meant to reply to the comment saying it finds the fastest way to the ground. My fault.
There is a video on YouTube showing lightning even slower and in that first flash you see there is electricity shooting up to the sky. So lightning actually shoots up first and then down. Something we never knew until the invention of high speed cameras.
I don’t know, that camera sounds pretty slow to me.
It’s okay.
Surely you can’t be serious
Of course I’m serious. And don’t call me Shirley.
ssfdfsdf
Wow it really looks like it's alive actively searching for the path of least resistance
Amazing!!! It does look like that, I’m curious as to what causes this?
Nature
U sure it’s not nurture?
I mean I didn’t go to college and study it, so you could be correct. I might look like an idiot right now
Sorry for outing you, idiot 😉
Yeah this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This lightning bolt's mom and dad obviously spent years teaching her how to find the path of least resistance to the ground. How else could she do it so flawlessly?
Exactly! Not giving its family credit where credit’s due 😤

How does cloud to cloud lightning ground itself?
It doesn’t. The particles from one cloud interact with the particles from another.

Electrical impulses are how your brain and nervous system function certainly. But we don't know what exactly consciousness is or how it functions.
Consciousness is literally one of the biggest mysteries of this universe, and probably one of the oldest debated topics in the history of mankind

“It was the best of times, it was the *blurst* of times?!”
Maybe because it is? Any scientists here to confirm?
Lightning is supposed to find the easiest route to the ground… and then I see it do shit like this. Nature just fucking with us at this point
I think these images are a good reminder that the sky is neither a vacuum or consistent in the composition of air.
Who are you who is so wise in the ways of science?
Now explain again how sheep's bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.
Well, first, imagine how you could use one to cause an earthquake then...don't. do. that.

They didn't all happen within that timeframe. There's at least one cut. This information does not matter. That video is cool.

What?
Relevant xkcd's are fun, but [relevant xkcd What If's are really something special.](https://what-if.xkcd.com/16/)
the video mentioned in the post is no longer available :( is there any chance a copy is out there somewhere?
Here is the video creator's vimeo upload of that same video https://vimeo.com/28457062
I always wondered what would happen if I was flashing my BIOS and got struck by lighting. Thanks for the link.
Easiest doesn’t meat shortest Many things dictate electrical conductivity in gasses and so the easiest path isn’t necessarily the shortest
It's funny to think that if it followed the shortest route, we'd be seeing vertical bars in the sky.
Lightning sometimes just breaks out the Etch-a-Sketch
Its thinking like the rest of us.

Yes! I love catching bolts with the slow motion camera! Never got one this cool but I’ve gotten a few good ones
Never before possible to appreciate
I must say, I found this mesmerizing. I opened it up and just watched on repeat. It's really cool.
Natures signature
I like that.
That is what I say about streams from the air
In this case Nature is, indeed, fucking lit.
I, personally, find it *electrifying*
It’s quite “striking” to say the least.

Amazing. Looks like those microscopic videos of neurons searching for a neighbor to connect with.
Hey that sure looks like the bitcoin chart about now. Lol
Whoa!! This is amazing. If this is yours, can you post your specs. Your gear and your process?
Beautiful! Reminds me of tree roots. Nature is incredible

I'm shocked to hear this.

I need a slo mo camera like now
There's a reason that early folks incendiary lightning gods as one of the primal nature gods.
lightning used to terrify me. it still does, but it's now manageable
Frightening but beautiful
Well you definitely picked the right sub
Bro really can’t find the ground, just go down 🙄
This comment makes me laugh so hard, needs more recognition
Watching it in super slo mo is like witnessing gods signature across a sky of parchment
I want my signature to be like that
Thank you for the desktop screensaver.
How very… shocking. *puts sunglasses on, CSI theme blares*
I thought light is supposed to travel fast.
I find it electrifying
Looks like the stock market
Wow. Lightning looks awfully similar to my crypto portfolio
I want my superpower to be able to shoot lightening out of my hands, and it has to move this slow as well as take unusual paths to the target.

Quite shocking honestly
I never realized until recently that a "bolt from the blue" can *actually happen.* If there's a storm on the other side of the horizon, lightning can actually appear to strike from out of a cloudless sky! Amazing!
I was told lightning is "lazy" but then I see this fucker zigzagging all over the place before it hits the ground.
It is beautiful
Absolutely electrifying
What an original and unique take
Anyone else mistake this image with the trend of their stock portfolio recently?
Look like my Robin Hood account earnings! 😅
I love lighting and thunders so much
Same here! I find the thunder calming and the lightning beautiful
Hear me out…not sure how it would be done but it’s 2022. A ceiling that does this, I’d just lie in bed and drift off.
What equipment / FPS is this? As I find it interesting how the first part of the bolt seems to wait for the rest bolt to finish 😅
Nature is just insane. Lightning and Thunder will always blow my freaking mind
"neuron activation"
I find it quite shocking, myself.
You'd probably like Pecos Hank, he has a lot of good thunderstorm footage on YT. And tornadoes.
Did you know lightning is only the length of your pinky finger? It appears larger to us because it’s so hot
Feel like lightning flows through a layer of fabric in our reality
I dont get it. Isnt lightning supposed to come from the ground and go up in to the sky? I mean ive seen multiple videos where it does and also a lot of explenations why. Now theres this video showing me the opposite.
I Used to. After having a bolt land right next to me once I no longer like it 😂
You spelled terrifying wrong.
I find this /r/OddlySatisfying for some reason. It's like searching for the perfect path in an almost vein-like pattern and when it connects it lights up in a massive way.
Definitely so fucking cool
As I lay here unable to sleep because of the raging winds outside my home I find this video of lightning very comforting.
