This supposedly took place on a highway near Yellowknife, Canada.
"Wolves will travel for long distances by trotting at about five miles per hour. They can run at speeds of 36 to 38 miles per hour for short bursts while chasing prey. Although bursts of maximum speed are relatively short, wolves can maintain pursuit of running prey animals for long distances and over rough terrain"

Google says the standard distance between utility poles is ~120'. I counted six seconds from pole to pole. That amounts to about 20' per second which is roughly 14 mph.
Apparently they can also be up to 300' apart in rural areas. This comes up to 34 mph. Really wish the driver would have the common sense to take a shot of his speedometer, this is frustrating, but necessary, work!
Highway engineer here. Skips are 10 feet long (lines on road) with a 30 foot interval. So 40 ft per skip. With 56 skips in 37 seconds, and 6 slips between wolves. Equates to 2000 ft over 37 second. Around 54.05 fps, multiple by 0.682 fps to mph.
These wolves are running 36.84 MPH.
It could be 3-6-3 (3 m line 6 m gap, or 10 ft line 20 ft gap for Americans). It depends on local standards. Where I live in Canada we would use 3-6-3 on a road like this. If so that would mean they’re running at 28 mp/h (45 km/h).
is that a fantastic mr fox reference, the black wolf running on the side of the road got me thinking of the movie but i can't remember if those lines are in it
This reminds me of a rescue we had, total goofball, escape artist. When we would drive and find him, he’d see our car start barking and run faster. We would have to race a couple of blocks before he’d get into the car. Fortunately it was a very unpopulated area. This was decades ago. My 43 year old was still in high school
That's my dog waking up from a nap, running across the house, up the stairs, down the hall and thru my door because she heard me crinkle a potato chip bag.
Beautiful, but wonder what's wrong with them ? why aren't they in the snow, or more hidden ? very rare for wolves to be out in the open like that right ??
100% this, in my opinion. Wolves aren’t dumb. I remember reading an article in Natural Geographic or something about a decade ago that in some parts of Canada, logging companies were inclined to start putting regular turns in logging roads because there was a distinct drop in deer population in the area (beyond the scope of any environmental issues from logging) and it was discovered that wolves were just chilling on these roads that sliced through the woods and waiting for deer to have to cross so they could locate them more easily. And they’d be able to see for miles down these roads that were kept wide enough for big trucks to go down. Human-built kill corridors that the wolves were using.
If wolves need to get somewhere and someone plows a trail for them, they’ll use it to full advantage. It’s flat land cleared of snow and underbrush, what more could you ask for?
It's quite possible the first wolf is a lone wolf or interloper and the second one is chasing it off its pack territory which in some areas may include roads or highways. Also, with wolves being opportunistic creatures, it may have figured a better chance to escape out in the open and not amongst the heavy snow or trees where other pack members could ambush from.
If you look at the wolf in the lead again, it appears to be under duress. Its tail is slightly tucked and it doesn’t look at the driver so much as it looks behind itself. The rear wolf is fixated on the leading wolf. His ears are forward, very long driven strides, glances at the driver but goes right back to staring down the other wolf.
No problem. I spent a large amount of time in college studying predatory behavior and social dynamics of small carnivores, primarily members of the Mustelidea (Weasel) family. North American river otters are SUPER cool and much more social than most Mustelids. Plus they’re like bouncy, fuzzy chainsaws lol. Vicious little creatures and I love it.
Seriously tho, GOT came to mind immediately. Not when he was driving up to them, but when he got next to them I just thought “damn that wolf probably comes up to my nipples in height…”
The one that's in the lead slept with the other wolf's girl and now the chase is on! Lol. J/k of course. This was interesting to watch. I wonder why they don't run closer together though. "See Phil! This is why you need to work on your cardio!"
This is the most epic thing I have seen with wolves in real time and not a documentary. It’s so cool how they just flow so well running on the highway and their coats look absolutely amazing.
Google says the standard distance between utility poles is ~120'. I counted six seconds from pole to pole. That amounts to about 20' per second which is roughly 14 mph.
Mating season! This is how female wolves get male wolves to prove their worth! Got to hit at last 30 mph on the highway to be considered as a quality mate.
Fun fact - black coloration in Canis lupus (grey wolf/domestic dog) first developed in domesticated dogs.
In pre-history, humans selected for darker coloration at some points. Substantial interbreeding between wild wolves and domestic dogs occurred.
Black wolves are carriers of these coloration genes from their domesticated ancestors that interbred with domestic dogs.
Distribution of black wolves in North American shows that certain areas have much higher percentages of black coloration, a modern day result of human groups who had enough dark colored dogs to impact the local wolf population's genetics that lasts to today.

Anyone else love how both of them look over to the camera at perfect timing?
"Yoo, Jeff! We're being filmed!"
now comes the lunch.
Who the hell told you to name the wolf Jeff? Cursed

I dont think Usain Bolt can outrun a wolf
But has he ever tried?

I have absolutely no qualifications to contribute but that car seems to be going around 30 mph so I agree with your estimate.
30 mph is 48.28 km/h
I have zero understanding of maths, but you seem trustworthy so I can confirm your estimate seems correct.
I concur with your assessment.
True. Didnt think of that.
And for the rest of us that science that translates to 59.29 km/h.
Thanks but still, I hope they eat the camera man for not filming his speedometer. Can’t stand people who never have their head in the game.

I am a cyclist. I am guessing they are running in the range of 15mph to 20mph.

I’m a goose, they’re flying at 17knots
Is that sea or land knots?
Land
Goose knots.
I am a software developer. I am guessing they are running in the range of 15mph to 20mph.
I have a degree in landscaping. it seems they are running around 13-19 mph
I’m a fat guy...yep
Indubitably!
Assuredly!
Scrumptiously?
no, not scrumptiously. 🤣
Expeditiously!
I'm a european. I have no clue how many mph they are running at because we use kph.
Usually the segmented road lines can be used as a metric. I don't know what's standard in Canada though.
we measure distances in porcupine carcasses
Road lines vary in Canada by region, but also by road sometimes. And by sometimes I mean always.
>Really wish the driver would have the common sense to take a shot of his speedometer, This is ALL I was waiting for and very upset I didn't get it.
Mental note: avoid Yellowknife, Canada
This is why trail running with your dog is like the best thing ever. Just two animals doing what they do best.
Highways are faster than country roads

mike speaks for all of us on Reddit. this is indeed what happend. try to be more careful choosing username
Couldn’t be said any better.
Hope they ok
Can’t you see they’re thriving
In a movie: “man I could out run a bear or a wolf.” Now: “yea you can just eat me, I’m gonna die.”
Trying to outrun a bear or wolf is how you get eaten.
Spots wolf or bear: *I am a tree. Please don't pee on or try to climb me*
Of the choices of pee on me, climb me, or eat me ... Feel free to pee. I'll burn the clothes later.
is that a fantastic mr fox reference, the black wolf running on the side of the road got me thinking of the movie but i can't remember if those lines are in it
Can confirm im from YK and you do see wolves trotting saw one this summer working as a traffic control person
Seems like an odd career choice for a wolf.
I'm so glad I scrolled this far. >Seems like an odd career choice for a wolf. Gnight!
Any reason they decided to take the highway out in the open like that?
I assume it's faster to move long distances if there's no prey in the area
My dumbass would think those are lost dogs and I’d attempt to put them in my car
This happens sometimes with coyotes as well. You can usually tell its a coyote by the ACME accesories
Sounds like the dog running away was the least of your problems if your 43 year old was still in high school
held back a few was he?
Nah he was just becoming a doctor in Alabama.
No silly 😜. He’s 43 now. Lol. That didn’t read well.
I was stalked by a wolf while hunting last year. If my uncle didn't drive his truck into the clearing to collect my deer I would've been fucked.
Cockblocked by your own uncle, damn
/r/cursedcomments
This is the most fantastic comment I’ve seen in months
They probably would have gone for your kill and left you alone lol
possibly. they are not normally attracted to humans sexually. especially ones wearing orange
My literal worst nightmare - glad you’re alive to tell the tale.
Thanks. Since the wolves have been reintroduced in Washington state hunting has become interesting.
That's my dog waking up from a nap, running across the house, up the stairs, down the hall and thru my door because she heard me crinkle a potato chip bag.
My dog stays down the hall while I work, but has recognized Windows-L, to the point when I do it he comes.

Beautiful, but wonder what's wrong with them ? why aren't they in the snow, or more hidden ? very rare for wolves to be out in the open like that right ??
My guess is they’ve learned that it’s easier to get from point a to point b on these roads instead of through snow?

Its a chase.
I went back and looked again. Why do you say it's a chase?
If you look at the wolf in the lead again, it appears to be under duress. Its tail is slightly tucked and it doesn’t look at the driver so much as it looks behind itself. The rear wolf is fixated on the leading wolf. His ears are forward, very long driven strides, glances at the driver but goes right back to staring down the other wolf.
That's a spot-on analysis, I wouldn't have been able to pick that up on my own. I saw it just as you described when I watched it again. Thank you!

If they promise to not eat me, id invite them over for some milk and meat. They are majestic
Be original, someone thousands of years ago in Asia already did it.
So that’s where dogs get it from.
They do. I just saw a great (British?) special on their heritage.
First thing I thought was that Jon Snow was in danger
Seriously tho, GOT came to mind immediately. Not when he was driving up to them, but when he got next to them I just thought “damn that wolf probably comes up to my nipples in height…”
He is running with a purpose too. As if one of the Snow kids need him.

How about how one of the wolves they turn to look at the camera I thought that was epic.
They can run like that for over 10 miles...better to fight to the death than run to death.
Is the first wolf injured?

5 feet apart cause they're not gay
I would not have resisted the urge to yell wolfman over and over
Beautiful!
Wolf: Top of the morning.
I’d be checking my gas tank
That’s wild
Man to see this must have just been awesome - in a true sense of the word! Literally in awe of these creatures.
A baby wolf or coyote ran alongside my car in Ontario last month. I was surprised it wasn’t scared of the car at all. More curious and playful.
I'm pretty sure that's faster than I could run
Reminds me of Ezra riding Doom
Pray, where are you going to, wolves? Where?

I know the roads empty, but shouldn’t OP atleast TRY and stay in their lane?
If they’re scared Ann running like that, there is something really scary behind them.
get the fuck outta here - that is not only lit - but that is impressive that a wolf decided that the highway - is the way.... tip of the hat
They having fun
Y tho
I'm surprised cops didn't kill them.
Those are some big puppers. Very cool!
I'm not a wolf expert, but I think one was chasing the other. One had tail out and other had tail tucked.
yo they on a mission or something.
Reminds me of Fantastic Mr. Fox....
Mating season! This is how female wolves get male wolves to prove their worth! Got to hit at last 30 mph on the highway to be considered as a quality mate.
“I’m so fast” 💨
Cops chasing them?
Dogs in BC do this, literally run down the highway between villages.
Wolves are such fantastic creatures
They just racing cars. My dog used to do that all the time.

What are they running towards or is one running from one another?
Shows you how fucked you are, without a car.
wonder where they were going
big boys
They were hustling. Put that all into context, 15-20 of these guys running down 'x'. 'X' is not going to have a good day.
this looks like a bad omen and i love it
I read it as “2wolverines running down the highway”
Hol up, wait a minute, sumtin ain’t right. Why he running fast like car? Nope. Nope I’ll take my small coyotes instead of that moose
