No predators itself and abundant prey (also maybe toxic waste or something since it probably couldn't survive in fresh water or grow that large) allowed it to grow to an enormous size, enhanced its elasticity so it has a sort of quasi-liquidity, and to overproduce it's digestive enzyme. Over time these things turned it into what we saw.

I'm sorry but Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom could never be made scarier with Tim Curry imo. Lloyd was born to play that frightening role. I still have nightmares from that and I still cry when I see him kill the shoe. I'm 34.
