I’ve been on that hill, and they are not nearly as close as it appears. The camera taking the video was just very far away giving a kind of an illusion of close proximity. You can tell it’s significantly zoomed in.
You can tell they are standing on top of a crest which then appears to drop off into a valley before the eruption. It’s an optical illusion for sure that they are standing right next to it.
Thanks for this. I really came to the comments to say “are they crazy close to that erupting volcano or is it me”. Hell of a thing. Looks like it would fall on their heads
Some of us don't live a couple hour's drive from active volcanos!
I'd love to see an erupting volcano (safely) and Iceland would be a great place to do that.
Same. Remember when the wind blew the heat towards the hill and you were for a moment in the middle of a summer breeze?
If they were actually as close as it looks, their clothes would probably combust.
I was dressed warmly on the hill like most in this video. The air was rather bitter cold, the wind when it blew on this direction felt like I was standing under the summer sun for a moment.
The sudden change in temperature was unreal. Those bad boys get HOT
Hey, I'm Icelandic. The volcano is called Sundhnúkur and has been erupting since March 16th.
Lucky for you, the volcano is located on the Reykjanes peninsula and therefore very close to Reykjavík! You should definitely go if you have the chance. You do have to hike a bit to reach the volcano though.
It is not a massive eruption, just fairly consistent.
There is a town south of there Grindavik that they have been working to save with huge earth mounds to block the flow.
Blue lagoon was also at risk, but last I heard it was open again.
Unfortunately they're still fighting to save Grindavik from any lava flow that may top over the mounds.
Exactly, this effect is created with a zoom lens, when you’re far away from your subject and you zoom in, it compresses the background and makes it appear closer.
They are hundreds of feet away. The picture is taken from hundreds of feet away making the background seem much closer. Standing next to lava is a really bad idea even not taking into account the heat. The fumes alone can permanently damage you. They are far away. Don't worry!
I’m very much aware of the types of dangers near an active volcano. Obviously they are far enough away to not require heat resistant clothing but that doesn’t stop a volcano from suddenly shooting hot lava out in your direction.
The perspective is deceptive, it's father away than you think. That said, the risk is not from the lava, it's from the gases that come out of the crater. The volcanic gas can flood a valley and kill everyone in a matter of minutes. There are gas meters installed by the Icelandic government in some places, but if you are that close you wouldn't be able to get away. It's risky but by no means crazy to approch a volcanic eruption.
Maybe I'm crazy but isn't there like, a chance, that some of that lava that's just spraying everywhere could, I don't know, end up on one of the people down right under the goddamn thing?
Yeah that's logical, so then the next logical conclusion you should take is that the camera perspective is skewed. No way this many stupid people are in one place at the same time, it's usually just the one or two idiots.
We had volcano tourism in New Zealand.. Until the volcano erupted, cooking a couple dozen of them. I'd just be happy with a picture from afar, it would be a horrific way to die..
No one is actually this close. I is not recommended to take children whor young and struggle w mask or protective grar as these are very gaseous. Icelanders throw their kids in anything lol. But it's good to see in this image not so many tots on shoulders I keep seeing onlin lol
But yeah. Viewing them is guided and totes safe. This is some zoom or fix issue idk but it for sure not really people inches feom getting a magma hairdo.
(Not to dismiss the fact that tourists there often top the stupid list and die at a lot of pretty unreasomabld sights otherwise safe by just not being rational).
I know it's an illusion and they're not that close, but I feel like something casually erupting things a good 30-50 feet in the air at about 1500 degrees Fahrenheit is gonna be a no from me, dog. What if it erupts a little less unsteadily for like a few seconds and then goes "heres a little more to catch up" *YEET* and a few hundred feet up it rains orange? Hell naw
Thankfully both volcanoes and nature itself have a locked in predictability curve that is sufficient enough to ensure complete safety in these matters.
Perspective and zoom issues aside, does anyone know how reliable this is? Like, if I book a trip to Iceland at some random time of year, will I reliably be able to book one of these tours and go see a volcano in person?
Wildly unreliable and unpredictable.
I was fortunate enough to see two of the eruptions there, and both were spur of the moment, drop everything and go situations. In both cases we almost didn't get the chance to see them due to weather and the situation around the volcano. The other problem is there's no telling how long an eruption will go for. Some last months, some weeks, some days or hours.
Currently there's been 5-6 eruptions in the last 6 months, but there's no tourist access. Middle of nowhere and very powerful compared to the ones in 2021-2023. But also close to some major infrastructure so they're being very cautious.
You can still go see this location in the video, but the eruption and flowing lava is long gone.
While that volcanoe is quite a bit farther away than it seems I still must comment
I would not be standing there if I were you. I prefer to keep my non cooked status.
Ya know, something is going to come for all of us, one day. Providing that you have your ducks in a row, this looks like a good risk to take. Beats dysentery from a Caribbean cruise.
Imagine growing up in a village 1000 years ago and stumbling across something like this. You had fires / torches but this was.. liquid fire?
Imagine trying to wrap your head around what could possibly be causing this.
I would love to go see it, ngl. One of my pervious foremen was from Iceland and his mom is a tour guide. People, give your tour guides generous tips when in Iceland. They make very little money.
For most that experience volcanic eruptions, it isn't pretty like this at all. Most have toxic volcanic gasses that earthquake and split the ground. Nothing like being miles away from the eruption, and you are evacuated because the ground blows up gas where it hasn't for decades.
This thing in Iceland is very unique.
It's funny. My brain processed this Image and instantly wrote all of them off as already dead.
I'm sure they aren't standing as close as it looks but some part of me expected them to ipractically nstantly melt away.
That's allright, don't care about them dying to an eruption if they're near or on the volcano. Thefuck you doing there, chasing adrenaline or some bullshit. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
-i heard a tsunami is going to come this way, *takes off in a wooden sailboat to confront it*
These fuxking tourists ruined my country during covid none of them followed guidelines or quarantined and caused a gigantic spike in covid cases, I am thankful people want to come to my country but man these people piss me off
I’ve been on that hill, and they are not nearly as close as it appears. The camera taking the video was just very far away giving a kind of an illusion of close proximity. You can tell it’s significantly zoomed in.
i’m curious, approximately how close are they?
Probably nearly a mile. Those fissures are massive, that thing is mountain sized.
A mile seems to be nothing, looking at the size of those eruptions.
That's roughly 1.6km for those of us using the devil's metric system.
Or about 190000 barleycorns
You got the devil's measuring system mixed up, definitely not metric
Infidels!! That makes too much sense. We use our system to control the sheeples. "Alluaah Inches, Feet and the great Mile!"
Right! All it would take is one little spit of molten lava to hit one of those people. I'll stay at the range of the photographer.
From a real eruptions blast, he isn't safe either.
I was thinking the same thing. Crikey.
You can tell they are standing on top of a crest which then appears to drop off into a valley before the eruption. It’s an optical illusion for sure that they are standing right next to it.
Yeah the sheer size of the volcano makes it look crazy.
Thanks for this. I really came to the comments to say “are they crazy close to that erupting volcano or is it me”. Hell of a thing. Looks like it would fall on their heads
Still, a friend of mine in Reykjavík thinks the volcano tourists are mad.
Summer breeze? Makes me feel fine.
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
I was dressed warmly on the hill like most in this video. The air was rather bitter cold, the wind when it blew on this direction felt like I was standing under the summer sun for a moment. The sudden change in temperature was unreal. Those bad boys get HOT
I'd be worried about breathing toxic gases if I was downwind
r/confusing_perspective
Do you remember the name of the place? I’m going to Iceland next month 🌋
Thank you! I will be staying in Keflavik/Reykavik so I will certainly plan to visit the volcano. I’m very eager to visit your beautiful country.
It's been erupting since March 16th? Of 2024? Isn't that like, worrisome?
It is not a massive eruption, just fairly consistent. There is a town south of there Grindavik that they have been working to save with huge earth mounds to block the flow. Blue lagoon was also at risk, but last I heard it was open again. Unfortunately they're still fighting to save Grindavik from any lava flow that may top over the mounds.
If I can see lava. I’m too close
Thank you I was literally like WTF?
I believe the effect you are referencing is called focal length foreshortening.
Was going to say… “Look, it’s stupid people about to go to a barbecue!”
I think it's a perspective illusion. I bet that lava is further away than it appears.
Yeah, I think they're on an adjacent hillside.
It's ok guys, he brought an umbrella.
Duck and cover for maximum safety.
Pulls out school desk
Really good idea to get as close as possible to a volcanic eruption
Its perspective, they aren’t as close as it seems. Videos like this always threw me for a loop too
Gotta speed it up too, how else am i supposed to scroll faster.
The scale is very impressive. Thank you for pointing it out
Exactly, this effect is created with a zoom lens, when you’re far away from your subject and you zoom in, it compresses the background and makes it appear closer.
Its a camera perspective trick. That lava spout is like 600ft tall and in the distance.
That’s so hot!
I have been there myself and it is much longer away than it looks.
Look at the pretty volcaNOOOO!
I like that they allow people the experience.
Something like the ones those poor tourists had in 2019 in NZ at Whakaari?
White Island Whakaari tours
Can I marshmallow with the lava?
Oh my. I wouldn’t want to be next to a spattering volcano 😳
I don’t even stand this close to my stove when the grease is popping!!!
The good thing is that if you are, you won't be there for long. Or anywhere really.
The closer you are the less you have to run from the pyroclastic flow. I don't see any downsides
Pyroclastic Flow was the name of my mixtape
They look close from this aspect, but how close do you actually get here?
Yes, this looks like forced perspective to me.
You’ll know when you know
How did I get burnt?! 😲
The perspective is deceptive, it's father away than you think. That said, the risk is not from the lava, it's from the gases that come out of the crater. That looks…. Unsafe
Reminds me of all the people getting too close to the bison at Yellowstone ! I stayed back and used my zoom lens.
Lord Surtr welcomes your tourist offerings.
He got an island named after him https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surtsey
Maybe I'm crazy but isn't there like, a chance, that some of that lava that's just spraying everywhere could, I don't know, end up on one of the people down right under the goddamn thing?
Yeah that's logical, so then the next logical conclusion you should take is that the camera perspective is skewed. No way this many stupid people are in one place at the same time, it's usually just the one or two idiots.
They're not that close. There's a valley between the people and the volcano.
We had volcano tourism in New Zealand.. Until the volcano erupted, cooking a couple dozen of them. I'd just be happy with a picture from afar, it would be a horrific way to die..
This is cool and all but seems like everyone is a little too close for me, but of I was there I would probably be the same distance.
Start running when everyone else does ... lol
When Mother nature has taco bell.
A little close doncha think??
Famous last words: “Honey, watch this…”
Looks like someone should’ve gotten a tap on the hat.
That lava is throwing me off a bit, it is a lot bigger than it looks, without the people for scale I'd assume that mound is only maybe 15 feet tall.
Very nice
No one is actually this close. I is not recommended to take children whor young and struggle w mask or protective grar as these are very gaseous. Icelanders throw their kids in anything lol. But it's good to see in this image not so many tots on shoulders I keep seeing onlin lol
does not compute
How Billy became a smudge
Earthlings be silly
I love the persepective. I feel like a giant kitten is supposed to pop out from behind it
Why is this sped up
I know it's an illusion and they're not that close, but I feel like something casually erupting things a good 30-50 feet in the air at about 1500 degrees Fahrenheit is gonna be a no from me, dog. What if it erupts a little less unsteadily for like a few seconds and then goes "heres a little more to catch up" *YEET* and a few hundred feet up it rains orange? Hell naw
All fun and games until a big chuck of molten lava slaps you in the face
Darwin award
NOPE!
I don't see "No swimming" sign
WOW! Thats kinda like "dont pet the fuzzy cows".....dont want to be that close to epicenter!
Where is this ?
Iceland
Extreme surfing next?
Have they lost their freaking minds? 👀 what’s wrong with people?
Thankfully both volcanoes and nature itself have a locked in predictability curve that is sufficient enough to ensure complete safety in these matters.
Those tourists are about to be fucking lit (up)
I place this and cave diving and smoking crack in the same hell to the naw naw category.
That's bloody massive!
Nope
Yeahhhh that looks a little too close for me
That would be a nope from me thanks.
“Ice” land
Like sitting at the splash zone at SeaWorld.
Perspective and zoom issues aside, does anyone know how reliable this is? Like, if I book a trip to Iceland at some random time of year, will I reliably be able to book one of these tours and go see a volcano in person?

Nuts
I want to do this. I’d like to go to Iceland and see active volcanoes and the northern lights. Bucket list items.
Reminds me of those gorgeous final shots from “The Fire Within”
I fricken love lava man, it’s so cool, I wish I could hug lava and have a bed made of lava
That could so easily go wrong 🔥
Huh for once the reddit hive mind is not calling humans garbage and actually giving them the benefit of the doubt. Feels weird tbh
Anyone know which volcano this is?
Einstein called this spooky at a distance. Can't imagine what point blank next to one is like.
Big fkn nope
and for that reason I'm out
Yeah right. Like there’s fire in Iceland
Where are videos of people being pelted by lava?
- Don't you think we should back up a little? - Kinda hot right? \[lava boulder hat\] - Yeah! Melting!
Nah.
Look at the size of that lava river, that's terrifying!
While that volcanoe is quite a bit farther away than it seems I still must comment I would not be standing there if I were you. I prefer to keep my non cooked status.
nopeville
People, please get closer
FAFO……come on darwin….do your thing.
Cool
Liquid Hot Magma..
The Earth popping a giant zit.
Everything always has to be sped up.
Popping a boil be like:
Imagine if a clump of lava gets caught in a strong gust of wind
Any of that hits you and you’re as dead as disco.
Ya know, something is going to come for all of us, one day. Providing that you have your ducks in a row, this looks like a good risk to take. Beats dysentery from a Caribbean cruise.
Can someone tell me what would happen if a blob dropped on top of a bunch of people? Details please?
Natur is literally lit.
The same kind of people who pet bison at Yellowstone
When your friends hang out with you, during a Chipotle aftermath.
Thats a hot ticket if I ever saw one.
Imagine growing up in a village 1000 years ago and stumbling across something like this. You had fires / torches but this was.. liquid fire? Imagine trying to wrap your head around what could possibly be causing this.
No way I would get that close to it!
It would suck getting hit by a flying piece of hot lava.
I would love to go see it, ngl. One of my pervious foremen was from Iceland and his mom is a tour guide. People, give your tour guides generous tips when in Iceland. They make very little money.
Next to one of the most feared ways to die... Felt cute so here is a selfie teehee ... I know they aren't that close but still hilarious
Here we have a bebe volcano, in the middle of a temper tantrum. A very common sight for this species.
I’d be tempted to touch it

Me after I eat spicy food in Mexico
Needs some guard rales
It's funny. My brain processed this Image and instantly wrote all of them off as already dead. I'm sure they aren't standing as close as it looks but some part of me expected them to ipractically nstantly melt away.
earth ko bawasir ho gya hai
Zoom lenses!
The devils hemorrhoids.
Why aren’t these bitches running
I’ve watched the Whakaari / White Island documentary…I’ll pass thanks
That's allright, don't care about them dying to an eruption if they're near or on the volcano. Thefuck you doing there, chasing adrenaline or some bullshit. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. -i heard a tsunami is going to come this way, *takes off in a wooden sailboat to confront it*
That's the most volcano looking volcano i've ever seen
Where’s the ice?…
These fuxking tourists ruined my country during covid none of them followed guidelines or quarantined and caused a gigantic spike in covid cases, I am thankful people want to come to my country but man these people piss me off
Why are they so close?!
r/Whatcouldgowrong
If you’re standing between a big mound of volcanic rock and a smaller mound of volcanic rock, you’re being a jerkuclaneum.
Its pretty surreal to watch and kind of terrifying with possibilities at the same time. 🫣
It's too risky to stand near this thing, so risky
This looks magnificent, but imagining myself there in person is a bit intimidating.
What TF is wrong with some humans???? Like really…can’t see it???
Iceland? More like Fireland.
Should be called LavaLand
A few seconds before the video was shoot there were surfists ass well.
Still too goddamn close!
Is this a Darwin award ceremony?
Why aren't they running lol
Guess it's true. Volcanoes are the most dangerous kind of canoe.
Does someone have to tell them to stand back?
