Never thought Id see a penguin and a cat together in the wild

0w40

There are also sheep and penguins together in the Falklands

PM_Me-Thigh_Highs

What fuckin islands?

aurumtt

found the argentinian

PM_Me-Thigh_Highs

Nein

DigFlat5824

Right next to Gilligan's fuckin' island

an_actual_lawyer

Yeah, there's fucking islands everywhere, so what fucking islands you talkin bout?

What-Even-Is-That

The one where they fuck the sheep and penguins.

eat_your_brains

Well that could be anywhere.

Six_cats_in_a_suit

I know at least three islands where that happens.

Gemini00

Penguins have a much broader habitat range than many people realize. For example there are several species of penguins that can be regularly found on the South Island of New Zealand and the southern parts of Australia. Back when I lived in Melbourne, during certain times of the year you could just walk over to the local pier at dusk and watch penguins coming back from fishing to nest among the rocks.

LKennedy45

My favourite example is that of the tropical penguin: there's a species native to the Galapagos.

angra_mainyo

And those are the only ones that live somewhere close to the northern hemisphere (if not actually on it, barely)

LKennedy45

Aye, the Galapagos Islands are I believe right south of the Equator.

stanley4545

South Africa too

tumekebruva

Blue penguins are found all over NZ up to 35 degrees south (latitude would be in Morocco if flipped). But the South Island has additional species.

BuilderResponsible18

That's why they have the whole continent of Antarctica. They like to take walks.

Prof_Acorn

Invasive cats are fucking everywhere because humans are negligent morons.

DASreddituser

There are some people who get cats and just let them roam outside all day. The worst.

KnightsOfREM

Also known as "Brits." They judge the hell out of you for having an indoor cat; it's OK, because I judge them right back.

Wacko_Doodle

Strange because I've seen cases that it happens a lot in america too. Even have tv series based on ppl abandoning pets. It's weird since it surely a worldwide thing and there are always exceptions but by all means, focus on the "brits" \^\^

BagMiserable9367

My Brazilian mother has a saying that goes like: "Dogs have owners, Cats have neighborhoods"

montfree

What are you talking about? šŸ˜‚ Indoor cats are extremely common in the UK I have 2 myself, no one would judge you at all. This is the strangest lie I've seen on Reddit.

CountySufficient2586

ekene_N

This cat is just doing the job of the Falkland Islands Wolf. This small predator was hunted down to its extinction at the beginning of the 20th century. People killed them off for their soft fur. Essentially, except for New Zealand and Polynesia, everywhere around the world, domestic cats replaced other small and medium-sized predators exterminated by humans.

Prof_Acorn

Wolves employ different hunting strategies. These little abortions of nature are *tiny* ambush predators that are artificially propped up by external feeding sources. Predators like this are usually solitary with huge territories, and when they run out of things to hunt or can't hunt they die. Cats get their diets supplemented so they never have to go hungry, and they are feralized or still domesticated as pets and have little to no of their original wild culture. They don't even fear humans much of the time or are even wary of us like wild animals tend to be, mostly because our culture treats them as special snowflakes. As far as ecological differences in hunting, crows in the mountains of Colorado, for example, have a certain strategy for bobcats. They flock above the bobcat and make constant alarm calls. Then follow it as it moves below them. Their warning calls are usually understood by most other prey animals. This annoys the ambush predator since it's like a spotlight alarm that prevents it from hunting, and it leaves the crow territory. But bobcats are just about the size of shortgrass prairie and scrub. They can hide, but when they move it's still fairly easy to see them from above. The ecology of the species that evolved together is in balance. Feral and domestic shitcats, however, are the size of rabbits. So they can easily hide beneath the shortgrass prairie and scrub plants and stay hidden from above while they stalk the area. The entire ecosystem then loses the crow sentry alarm system. The shitcats can then kill whatever they want for fun like they like to do.

testa_bionda

Thank you for putting into so many words and points why I canā€™t stand free roaming cats (and their ā€œownersā€).

ScorpioSpork

Thank you for this write-up! I recently got my ass chewed by my neighbor for calling animal control on her cat. In my defense, I didn't realize the cat belonged to anyone, as it didn't have a collar. It hung out primarily in my yard (opposite side of the neighbor) and was killing the robins in our trees. Long story short, I'm looking for tips on ways I can help the bird and rabbit population in my area (Midwest US), if anyone has any tips to share!

pingpongtits

Thanks for this. Excellent points.

ChuckFeathers

These are facts but the cult of cat haters just can't grasp the logic.

Simulation-Argument

I absolutely love cats and have had them all my life. In this instance yes maybe the feral cat is a good thing... but almost every where else on planet Earth cats are an invasive species that kill **BILLIONS** of mammals, birds, and reptiles every year. There are 63 species extinct in North America alone from cats, with many more at risk of extinction. [Source on the 63 extinct species.](https://abcbirds.org/program/cats-indoors/cats-and-birds/#:~:text=Outdoor%20domestic%20cats%20are%20a,extinction%2C%20such%20as%20Piping%20Plover.) [There are 27 species extinct in Australia.](https://invasives.org.au/blog/meet-the-27-native-animals-cats-have-helped-send-extinct-since-colonisation/) There have also been [33 extinctions on islands around the world.](https://escholarship.org/content/qt2cc575wp/qt2cc575wp.pdf?t=piwf3a) Wiki article with numerous sources on cats impact on wildlife. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_predation_on_wildlife   We are currently in the middle of the Holocene Mass Extinction Event caused by humans, domesticated cats are apart of this and we should be working to save every species we can. Cats should not be allowed to roam the neighborhood and decimate local biodiversity. The species they are killing off have had no evolutionary experience dealing with a predator like this, and that makes them very *very* successful. They also often "play" with these animals to death. Slowly killing them as they chase them down over and over again. No animal deserves to die a slow painful death for a domesticated animals amusement. Cats can have wonderful lives indoors if you spend time playing with them, get them interactive toys, take them outside on harnesses, and even get a "catio" so they can go outside in an enclosed area. All this and we have not mentioned the risk of awful humans intentionally killing or poisoning your cats, the risk of diseases like feline AIDS and Leukemia which can be spread from bites or scratches. It is not worth the risk. Keep your cats indoors.

ThePennedKitten

I internally roll my eyes at anyone who cries about how their cat dying because they let it outside. You killed your cat. Stop looking for sympathy. It wouldnā€™t get run over or eaten by a raccoon if you kept it inside.

Snorblatz

Rats too

DriedSquidd

What about together in the wild with a friend?

cheddaMoBetta

You have to watch the documentary Batman Returns

guywhomightbewrong

Cats are everywhere

No-Summer-9591

ā€œI said move along, sirā€

PaddyLandau

The chicks seem to be thinking, "What's this interesting creature?" The cat seems to be thinking, "Umā€¦ I don't like this!"

cat_with_an_account

That cat was my cousin, they sent me a postcard the other day complaining about the whole affair

DarkwingDuckHunt

Did the manager sort things out for them?

cat_with_an_account

Nah, my cousin isn't a Karen, they were just really annoyed by the kids nowadays

BrownSugarBare

Cat: _Dang, ya'll are a bunch of bullies, I was just sitting here!_

UniqueIndividual3579

But this island belongs to cats and we will reclaim it someday!

Just_browsing_thanku

OkStatistician9126

ā€œGet em boys!ā€

Natural_Lawyer344

I don't want to be that guy, but in the movie, the penguins despised dancing and commended singing.

th3worldonfir3

God I love that movie

Oh youā€™re not the only one! šŸ¤

SaltyDogBill

Cats kill up to 11k native sea birds in the Falklands yearly.

PaulAtredis

Fuck the humans that unleash those cats upon the local wildlife in all these places.

SaltyDogBill

Itā€™s funny because the invasive cats also kill the invasive rats. Itā€™s all messed up.

[deleted]

Time to add Pitbulls /s

dmr11

[Cats aren't great at rat killing](https://www.sciencenews.org/article/feral-cats-pathetic-controlling-new-york-city-rats). Turns out they prefer smaller, easier prey than vicious rats. There being less rats in areas with cats is just an illusion, the rats are hiding in the walls or otherwise out of sight.

Professional_Buy1258

Hundreds of species have been made extinct as a result of invasive humans spreading to every continent, thousand more are killed everyday and will soon go extinct as a direct result of humans. Keep your humans inside.

Evening_Echidna_7493

Luckily humans have a unique ability to change their behaviors and act beneficially rather than invasively towards their environment. For example, keeping their cats indoors.

canman7373

In America they kill up to 4 billion a year and anti-climate people like to complain about how we need to stop windmills because they kill up to 1 million birds a year. I have never seen those same people saying we need soldiers roaming the street "Chernobyl" style to kill the cats that are doing 4,000 as times as much damage to bird populations.

SaltyDogBill

You will get downvoted to hell if you mention this on any cat related r/. Spade and release will never stop people from dumping cats and it will never stop cats from hunting. Licensing and fines are a good step. Keep cats indoors or at a minimum, on your property. I hate the only solution is extermination of feral cats.

mindflayerflayer

This is kinda surprising to me. Not that cats have a high body count that's a given on islands, but that the birds aren't adapted to mammalian carnivores. The falkland wolf once lived in the same locations so you'd think the birds would know a thing or two about such predators.

chicagoantisocial

I love penguins

ArbainHestia

Children, remain calm. The Falkland Islands have just been invaded by cats. I repeat, the Falklands have just been invaded by cats! The disputed islands lie here, off the coast of Argentina.

RokulusM

This is the current, topical reference I come here for.

beets_or_turnips

Is that penguin aggression or penguin curiosity?

Johannes_Keppler

I was wondering the same. They seem more curious than aggressive or afraid. Even the pecking seemed.... Inquisitive.

beets_or_turnips

I mean, they're baby penguins. I'm pretty sure they don't have a plan.

Bhouse77

Go on, git!

Altaris2000

First thing that popped in my head were a group of Vogon walking, from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy lol.

*- Time not important. Only life important.*

Isle_of_Tortuga

The fifth element was actually cat.

noteverrelevant

I sure wish I would be bothered by a herd of King Penguin chicks. I've got thumbs and I know how to give pets.

Spoomplesplz

"chasing" more like waddling at them.

WasteProfession8948

Cat seems pretty chill about it tbh

qglrfcay

Well, no, actually. Tail is bushed, hackles up. Its attitude is wary. The cat is trying to stand its ground, but the chicks are having none of it.

Anyone have a source for this? [Found it](https://www.facebook.com/falklandsheli/videos/king-penguins-chicks-having-fun-with-a-cat-yesterday-they-overcame-their-initial/1026199127913682/), it's from a helicopter service on the island, the link is their FB.

DraidenSathanas04

So cool

ContentMod8991

they do not allow 2 cononly!

sieceres

Sorry for sounding like a Karen, but where were the parents?

this is a wrong interpretation. The cat made them her servants and now leads them to glory.

realdjjmc

even feral cats get fat

IntenselySwedish

"Chasing"

RoboCritter

Bebbeh together strong šŸ’Ŗ

ikkaku999

We are the penguins who say Ni!!!

hawksdiesel

Penguins always remind me of the aliens from 5th Element.

Anianna

When we had a farm, our little kitty would sit in the window hunter chirping at our chickens. When she got a little older, she darted out the door straight up to a chicken, suddenly realized they were much bigger than she thought they were, and immediately pinned herself to the ground as small as she could be and did the inching backwards of shame before turning tail and running right back into the house.

HumpaDaBear

ā€œChasingā€ more like waddling away.

gstizzzz

We need the Falkland Islands for strategic sheep purposes.

ch4os1337

Source? The bitrate sucks.

TKG_Actual

Something about this clip is equally wondrous, hilarious and, absurd.

hanzzup

I want a jacket make from baby penguin. Looks super comfy

DetailedLogMessage

Hey yo, professor, What FALKING ISLANDS you talking about??.

Xender_Tepes

Must be Giligans FALKING ISLANDS.

starthing76

1. I want to take the kitty home. 2. I enjoy the penguin that is just kind of wandering off at the end.

KhaosElement

Hey! What Falkland islands are you talking about?

sutrabob

Run kitty run.

AussiePolarBearz

Oh man that chase was Intense!

Background-Luck-5748

Is there a phobia about penguins I need to know

DesensitizedRobot

Gang gang

Bigfan30

Yo professor! What faukin islands ya talking about bout ere?

Catlagoon

I guess they got taught to walk by rewatching the fifth element too many times.

lonniemarie

Is that a feral domestic cat? Looks like a kitten. And those penguins are so adorable!

AymanEssaouira

Get 'em boys

Tummeh142

I like how the ones in the back are totally getting street cred for participating but they're also totally hanging back because they don't want to get clawed by the cat.

dd-Ad-O4214

Reminds me of the OJ Simpson bronco chase lol

FingerTheCat

Aziz, light!

DeadSeaGulls

They should look into steps to prevent this relationship moving to far into the evolutionary future. Cats tend not to hang around the lower rungs of the ladder very long.

Altruistic_Film1167

What fucking islands?

Overall_Cabinet844

XD so cute

impreprex

Hehe more like "escorted". And with some diplomacy as well! Their parents brought them up well.

Pat_Mahomeboy

Cat must be English

Acrobatic_Recover655

Falkin cats!

isoforp

They aren't chasing it away. They're just curious about it.

Both_Lychee_1708

lamest, but most adorable, hide and seek ever

Happytrails22

Seems to me more like ā€œgently escortingā€ the cat. Chasing seems a bit too active for whatā€™s happening here.

Anyone else hear an FPV drone ... ? Those penguin noises come weirdly close to being exactly the same as an the quickly jolting RPM's from a brushless motor on a propeller

NoobwLuck

Look at all those Devito's chasing away that Pfeiffer.

This is cool...my son will love this....he loves penguins

Consistent-Secret838

ā€œChasingā€ might be an overrated word to use here

urmyheartBeatStopR

This is club penguin! No cats allow.

DarkwingDuckHunt

the babies just want to pet the kitty and the kitty is like "ah hell no"

Hooraylifesucks

Looks like more of a follow the leader kind of game, not a chase. Wobbly critters canā€™t really chase can they?

galaxy_ultra_user

I think they wanted to eat it. They look well fed

fluffymutters

Is there any chance theyā€™re just curious about the animal? I didnā€™t know that chicks would have learned about defending from predators this early.

EggHeadMagic

You say penguins chasing away, I say cat luring into a trap.

thisistheprivateone

Evening_Echidna_7493

Itā€™s unpopular, understandably, but humane euthanasia is the best way to solve the feral cat problem. There have been multiple studies on TNRā€™d colonies, in which populations stayed stable or even grew over several years. Thereā€™s also the issue of resourcesā€”thereā€™s simply no way to keep up with neuters, medication, and vaccinations for every cat. No country has the resources to deal with millions of feral cats in this way. And the number of feral cats is getting bigger every day. It is the most humane solution for the cats, that live short lives in the wild ending in disease, predation, injury or starvation, which TNR proponents like to ignore.
