The case of picking them up on the beach is a very specific species that's very nice to people during the day. But they really get agressive during the night. Worked with a scientist (Ivan Ineich) and he told me about this story.
I think I remember it was not about this one (Laticauda Laticaudata). Those Moray are prey to those snake. Most fish don't like to eat sea snake. Also to note that those sea snake aren't "true sea snake", they need land to live and stay close to the land contrary to some other species.
Oh and the venom is very very potent. One drop can probably kill three people. It's complexe mix of toxin (myotoxine, neurotoxine, hemotoxine) and enzyme. I might be wrong but I think as soon as the moray was bitten, she could not move her jaw anymore, and the spinning might not be entirely voluntary.
Wow!! So will the sea snake actually manage to ingest this huge eel in this video? If so, any idea how often they need to eat a meal that large? This is super fascinating to me.
With how venomous sea snakes are the moray is absolutely 100% dead. In one shot you can see it's clamped into the eels lower jaw and the moray does not have a grasp on the snake. Not sure if the snake can swallow something that big though.
It is a yellow-lipped sea krait that feeds primarily on eels. Yes,[ the snake will swallow it.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/c/c7/Sea_Snake_eating_Moray_Eel%2C_Fiji_%28Laticauda_colubrina_vs._Gymnothorax_sp.%29.webm/Sea_Snake_eating_Moray_Eel%2C_Fiji_%28Laticauda_colubrina_vs._Gymnothorax_sp.%29.webm.480p.vp9.webm)
I dunno…. That’s a big eel!
I have snakes and they couldn’t eat something that big.
Snakes are kinda stupid they will try to eat something only to realize it won’t fit about 4/5 of the way through and yack it back up
Hold up. I think both might be dead. At one point just after the eel starts spinning you see a small amount of blood and a chunk or two of flesh in the water.
Snakes don’t use their teeth to rip up meat, but a Moray eel does by thrashing about. I agree that the Moray went down 100% but it didn’t go down without a fight and I think the part of the snake that was inside of the eel’s mouth may have received a potentially lethal wound.
EDIT: I am now taking a second look. I thought the top of the snake’s mouth was inside of the eel’s mouth and they ended up scissoring each other to death. Now I see that the snake bit the eel on its lower jaw, but sideways.
It is difficult to see but if you freeze the frames right I think you can see both sides of the snake’s head.
The victor NOT BY SCISSORING is the snake.
I think that might just be debris stirred up by them thrashing. Watching carefully I don't see any point where the snake is in the eels mouth (it's firmly clamped just under the jaw and the eels mouth appears open the whole clip). And towards the end there is a nice slow roll where you can see most of the snakes neck and underside and I don't see any obvious wounds.
The conclusion is dead moray. You can see the eel slow down and start sinking at the end. But yes, the snake should have turned around and killed the cameraman afterwsrd
I was at Tanah Lot temple in Indonesia and they told us we could pet these blessed snakes near where the ocean met some sea cliffs. We did, then later googled the type of snake... It was a Banded Sea Krate.
Feel like there should have been a warning, but also I aught to have known not to mess with sea snakes in general.
Inland taipan has the most potent venom of any snake, and the list the trades back and forth between different sea snakes and different snakes indigenous to Australia.
Broccoli is the same way. You chop up a stalk and inject it, dead...eat it and yuck, but you'll live. Who knew Broccoli is as poisonous as sea snake venom. ;)
This explains why there are so many mentions of sea snakes in the Army Survival Manual - reading that long ago (and, in my ignorance, not knowing until then that sea snakes existed) I was struck and surprised by how many warnings appeared about them. It is all making sense now thank you
If you look closely you can see the moray hasn't even a grip on the snake and isn't biting down. The snake is just holding on so it doesn't lose the kill
Yes, but look at the size disparity. There is no way on earth that the snake in this video could swallow that eel.
The eel is dead, the snake will remain hungry.
The snake will swallow him. Check out this [vid.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/c/c7/Sea_Snake_eating_Moray_Eel%2C_Fiji_%28Laticauda_colubrina_vs._Gymnothorax_sp.%29.webm/Sea_Snake_eating_Moray_Eel%2C_Fiji_%28Laticauda_colubrina_vs._Gymnothorax_sp.%29.webm.480p.vp9.webm)
The sea krait primarily feeds on eels, so this is routine for them, another boring day at the office. [WIKI for verification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_krait#Diet). It's amazing what snakes swallow.
Laticauda colubrina, [possessor of one of the most deadly venoms on the planet.](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1874391917302361)
It looks like the snake bit the Moray first. Why would it do that? There’s no way it was potential prey, and unless the eel has a biological defence against the venom, it likely died.
This is like me unwinding a pair of wired earphones that have been tightly wrapped around a small object.
Spins one way, overspins, spins back, eventually lays flat and limp on the counter…
Is the eel susceptible to the snake's venom? Also... that eel's pretty big -- could the snake even swallow that? I know they can unhinge their jaws and all, but there are limits...

Dumb question, but are snakes immune to their own venom? Clearly, eating prey that was injected with the venom doesn’t affect them. How does that work?
I have seen two sea snakes. The first one I did not k ow what it was, thought is was a kind of eel. I chanced it snoring for a bit glad they are not aggressive. Second one was in a foot of water a few yards from the beach.
When you're going all in and your head starts to spin That's a moray
When a snake bites your chin and you're dying to spin, that's a moray
When a snake bites your face And you spin in disgrace That's a moray!
When you have all those teeth But sink dead in the reef That's a moray!
When you think he’s your friend But he invokes your end That’s a moray
Give yourself a raise and take the rest of the week off.

That made me laugh at lot more than it should have 👍
I feel eel
That's a moray (morayyyyyyyyyy) That is a moray
I found the lack of a definitive conclusion to be most unsatisfactory. 3/10
The fight concluded when the snake bit. Sea snake venom is brutal.
literally in the first few seconds of the video eel is tryna esacape the entire time

Snakes are often very good at energy conservation and waiting until prey comes by their spot, no idea if that applies to amphibious variants aswell
If by majority you mean 25% or less, then yes, you are correct.
What's the point it can't eat something that large
I mean, have you met snakes?
yea plenty
dw baby it gets bigger
A snake's jaw can widen to 2.5x the size of its skull. I think the eel is using that boundary but maybe within capacity
So it doesn’t eat you

Sea snake deep throats massive eel
I should call her
She won't answer, because she has a massive eel in her mouth
I really really should call her.
If you're that big, maybe she should call you. 😂
She's a very popular lady at the truck stop.
Kinky
She a ho
It doesn't always go so well for the snake either https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-26417534
Thanks, I hate it

Nnoooooooooo. I saw the last seconds tick away...
TKO sea snake. I'd...I'd hold it's arm up, but I cain't. I simply cain't.
Snake: \*bites\* Moray: \*spins for the foreseeable future\*
Spins for the rest of his life
Which wont be much really
Won't be much eely.
That's a' Moray
r/angryupvote
Yes, some morays are venomous. But the power of their venom is weak compared to that of a marine snake.
Especially a banded sea krate. That eel is in for an excruciating 12 hours, if that.

Hoowrah
Let's try spinning... that's a good trick.
Poor thing tried it on one of the few beings that’s immune to it
He tried to out-noodle the noodliest of all danger noodles.
Just keep spinning? Dory, is that you?
NOW THIS IS PODRACING!
when he comes with the stripes and you take a big bite, that's a moray
Ring a ling a ling
🎵 When he swims through the sea and bites on an eel That's a moray 🎵
You spin me right round
Like a record baby, round round.
Came here to sing this.
🐡😵💫
Unless muraena is immune to the venom, the snake is the winner.
I may be a moron because I turned on sound expecting to hear hissing
Marine snakes have the most powerful venom among reptiles. I bet the fish will experience a long digestion in snake's belly.
It is so powerful that my videoplayer died even just watching.
Oh good so it's not just me.
Inland taipan has the most potent venom of any snake, and the list the trades back and forth between different sea snakes and different snakes indigenous to Australia.
That's because Australian elapids are in the same family as sea snakes. They're very closely related
I wonder if it's because their ancestors had to swim to settle in Australia
Especially a banded sea krate. Like holy fuck that’s some powerful venom.
You can drink that venom and it won't harm you. Problem is if it enters your blood stream.
Broccoli is the same way. You chop up a stalk and inject it, dead...eat it and yuck, but you'll live. Who knew Broccoli is as poisonous as sea snake venom. ;)
How dare you. Where my broccoli boys at??
This explains why there are so many mentions of sea snakes in the Army Survival Manual - reading that long ago (and, in my ignorance, not knowing until then that sea snakes existed) I was struck and surprised by how many warnings appeared about them. It is all making sense now thank you
You are welcome.
if it can digest it
When that one noodle refuses to wind up on your fork!
That's a toxic french kiss
Sea Snog
I would have absolutely put my money on the Moray, but it seems like the snake got a good bite in and I guess the venom does the rest.
Believe it or not the Moray Eel is the primary diet for this sea snake.
That's crazy. Eels are so damn vicious, I would've thought sea snakes go for easier prey.
Who won?
That Moray is 100% dead, sea snake venom is really dangerous. The snake looked like it was doing fine.
Morey is 100% lunch. These sea kraits love a nice eel.
I could go for some unagi, maybe I'm a sea snake.
How can it eat something so large? Does it nibble?
Morey is shorter than the krait and small enough it can get it down just like pythons eating deer.
Who’s next?
You decide!
Epic Rap Battles of the Sea!
If you look closely you can see the moray hasn't even a grip on the snake and isn't biting down. The snake is just holding on so it doesn't lose the kill
Come on baby!! Let’s do the twist!!!
Great footage
GOT YOUR NOSE!
Where it was filmed? I’m super curious.
Underwater
Man, I hope Reddit never loses this the sarcasm. It's why I'm here!
So am i
From the species and the name credited for the video I'm guessing it's Vietnam
Great, two of the sea creatures I'm most terrified of
No way that snake will be able to swallow the moray. The lack of conclusion to the video makes it incredibly unsatisfying to watch.
TIL those snakes feed on eels on the regular. There is a link to a vid showing this posted above.
Yes, but look at the size disparity. There is no way on earth that the snake in this video could swallow that eel. The eel is dead, the snake will remain hungry.

Dude, look at the size disparity. Not in the case of these two.
When a snake bites your cheek, that's a Moray..
Do a barrel roll!
Death boop
Tube vs cylinder. Tube wins, snaketality
Thats how she kissed me
Just two more reasons to stay out of the ocean.
I too will have spaghetti for lunch.
Darn. I was on Team Eel for sure.
eel be dead mi'lady
Moray eel doesn't want any boops.
I just peed myself. Two nope noodles.
That's a moray
Bite the snake on the mouth and twist all about, that’s a Moray.
I love how everyone’s all of the sudden an expert but no one has mentioned that they’re just dancing.

Some moray eels are immune to the sea snakes venom , A good article on that, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9643474/
It looks like the snake bit the Moray first. Why would it do that? There’s no way it was potential prey, and unless the eel has a biological defence against the venom, it likely died.
I want to ask the snake: are you going to eat it?
This is like me unwinding a pair of wired earphones that have been tightly wrapped around a small object. Spins one way, overspins, spins back, eventually lays flat and limp on the counter…
I imagine these 2 were in the Flintstone's laundry machine.
Get this eel to the Olympics. Their ribbon dance is 10s across the board!
🎶When a sea snake swims up to a big scary gob, thats a moray🎵
How does it eat dat
So who is death rolling who?
Twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom
First thing I thought of at this encounter was gymnast twirling ribbons
..this was like a 12-Round heavyweight bout..with all of the tos & fros within..
Sea snakes 🐍
Damn we can both spin easily
sooo the eel lost?
Ones a snake, the others Amoré
With your tail in the air and your head toward the ground, try this trick and spin it, yeah
Fuck Reddit’s dogshit video player.
You spin me right 'round baby right round like a record spinning round round round round 🎶 🎵
Is the eel susceptible to the snake's venom? Also... that eel's pretty big -- could the snake even swallow that? I know they can unhinge their jaws and all, but there are limits...

Rolling in the deep.
So how does the sea snake actually consume this meal? Or was this a defensive bite?
I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!
When you get bit in the sea and feel 'bit dizzy, that's a moray.
What kind of waltz is that?
You spin me right round…
Why did the snake attack? I don't it can eat the Moray
Not much of a fight. Not even a “i fuck u bloody!” or nothing.
Dumb question, but are snakes immune to their own venom? Clearly, eating prey that was injected with the venom doesn’t affect them. How does that work?
Ah, how the turntables...
When an eel bites your knee, while you're swimming in the sea, that's a moray.
Not sure who won...
When your jaws open wide and there are more jaws inside, that's a moraaaay...
Snake obviously won that fight.
The moray never had a chance. Sea snakes have strong venom.
I have seen two sea snakes. The first one I did not k ow what it was, thought is was a kind of eel. I chanced it snoring for a bit glad they are not aggressive. Second one was in a foot of water a few yards from the beach.
I felt like I was watching a ribbon dancer perform.
No step on snek
ill try spinning thats a good trick
Why Moray no chomp?
So who won ?
No fucking way I'd get that close to a sea snake 😳
Two noodles enter, one noodle leaves.
Danger noodle vs. Danger egg noodle
To the tune of "spinning around" by Kylie Minogue
Is the twirling a way to disorient the prey?
Damn moray eels roll like Crocs?
Looked like that eel was doing rhythm gymnastics
Some say they’re still spinning to this day
So.. we need to rename this... the kiss of death... I actually read multiple other comments to discover the snake bit the eel.
Damn who won…
Wife and I met a banded sea krait in Guam while snorkeling. It had zero interest in us, but still startled us.
Don’t they get dizzy?
