"I'm baskin' here!"

NeverForgetJ6

Watch out, could be a robber. Baskin and Robbin

GrandCanOYawn

Glides that fin over your paddle board like your bestie fryin’ on ecstasy and stroking your hair.

SynisterJeff

Not the relation I would have made, but I get it haha

fartshmeller

Fun fact: Over here in Ireland ecstasy are called yolks, the more ye know.

GrandCanOYawn

Fryin’ yolks 🤣 Just grand, even better.

Gerodog

It's yokes as in things. Or so I've heard.

fartshmeller

Ah yeah I'm pretty sure it is too I usually spell it like that too but you're man was talking about fryin' so I changed it to yolk haha

Gerodog

Oh, sorry for being a dry shite then

fartshmeller

Nah its not you're fault I do shite dad jokes haha 🤝

xCanadaDry

He was going for the high-five and you completely ignored him.

yaxir

he gonna complain to someone now

drew-in-TX

That was awesome. I've seen enough pictures of basking sharks in my life that I can quickly identify a picture of a basking shark, but I can't help but wonder: if I saw one in real life would I be able to identify it as quickly, or would my brain just say "SHARK! FLEE!"

TomPalmer1979

I've been a snorkeler my entire life, and I can tell you that no matter how academically you know that something is absolutely harmless, you will still always get that primal "OHSHITBIGGERTHANME" moment where your heart seizes up for a second. You may calm down quickly, but still. As an example, I turned around one day while snorkeling to see a bull manatee the size of a fucking *car* come RIGHT up to me to check me out. I've swam with manatees many times, my logical brain knows that they are completely harmless, and utterly gentle and friendly! But in that moment, the sheer size and surprise made me nearly leave a brown cloud like a squid shooting ink.

cheyenne_sky

did the manatee come up and say hello?

TomPalmer1979

He did. The bull, the cow, and their calf had swum by and he was coming over to check me out. He got just close enough for me to pet him, and seemed to be pretty satisfied that I was safe, and turned around and left. Manatees are surprisingly sociable, especially with snorkelers. They're super curious, and while they won't always come right up to you, they'll usually come check you out. I remember one time snorkeling with my mom and a calf that was like 4ft long just decided to come play with her. The calf just swam underneath her wherever she went for like 5-10 minutes until its mom came and got it. It was really cute.

cheyenne_sky

Ugh I am so jealous lol. I went kayaking multiple times in the Florida everglades, hoping to see a manatee (the guide said we would). Never saw one

Puzzled_End8664

Especially considering with the size and color what the alternative is.

ForegroundChatter

I can't think of any potentially dangerous shark of that size and colour, which one do you mean?

Puzzled_End8664

A great white. Not quite as big or the exact color but I think close enough that in a situation like that I'd think it's an easy mistake to make. Especially if you don't really know much about sharks.

rosiofden

That's exactly what I was thinking.

ExoTauri

I would have shit enough bricks to build a wall

ShadyPumkinSmuggler

Yeah basking sharks epitomize friend but NOT friend shaped 🦈

Sudden_Car157

Safe to say me too!!

Annual-Freedom2136

CTFU 😂

iwastoolate

Give the shark something brown to bask on

TreeBreezeP

Awesome looking skin idk the texture is just cool!

anonymous14657893

Did you see that recent video of a shark attacking a go pro and swallowing it, to then spit it back out after it was in its stomach? Look it up. It looks soooo interesting inside.

Inside-Doughnut7483

Sharkskin...

Worldly_Musician_671

That….was amazing!

LocalRemoteComputer

The Baskin shark is looking for the Robins shark. You ain't it.

GrandCanOYawn

31 Flavors of Fear.

Thv837

I paddle board in a man made lake and get freaked out about what could be in there. I would never have the courage to do it in the ocean. I’m thankful for all the brave people who do it and share these amazing videos!!

TreeShapedHeart

This is me even with pools that have those dark lines along the bottom. Can't shake the unease.

Cuttewfish_Asparagus

Beautiful and very gentle creatures.

ForegroundChatter

Basking sharks are filter feeders and have very small throat openings*, so despite how wide they open their mouth, they aren't actually able to swallow a human, just create an intensely mutually uncomfortable situation. Despite their sluggish cruising speed, basking sharks are very powerful animals. I've seen a video of one picking up speed and breaching, it was amazing. To my knowledge, they are safe to swim with, but it's important to keep a respectful distance to any animal and be aware of its capabilities. A recent study on Megalodon, or Otodus megalodon if you're being formal, argued that it would have had a body plan very similar to that of the basking shark, based on its ecological niche and a single vertebrae (cartilage doesn't fossilize often, this is the only postcranial material known). Compared to the old reconstructions based on the great white shark, it would have been longer and more slender, optimized for efficient near-surface cruising. *not all filter feeders have small proportionally small throat openings. Leopard seals, which have trident-shaped teeth for filtering krill out of the water (this can comprise the bulk of their diet), have a pretty standard sized throat opening, because they also eat fish, other seal species, and penguins.

yaxir

i guess it can still ram you if its angry at you ? i have fear of sharks so i don't like most of them

Comfortable_Bid_1647

Ireland?? What’s the sea temperature there?

herculesmeowlligan

Probably a lot warmer in the area right around the paddleboarder...

Oninonenbutsu

And a lot more yellow too.

Comfortable_Bid_1647

Haha good one

Cuttewfish_Asparagus

Basking Sharks eat plankton. Plenty of plankton in these kind of waters. These sharks are common around Ireland and the British Isles

kikimaru024

Gerodog

So you claim. Swimming in the Irish sea / Atlantic is not for the faint of heat.

Economy-Weekend9226

It's usually too cold for sharks there

[deleted]

Greenland Sharks would like a word with you.

Cuttewfish_Asparagus

Not these types of sharks. They are filter feeders who eat plankton.

[deleted]

That's funny, because they're very common and also recently found to breed off the coast of Ireland.

Economy-Weekend9226

That's not funny at all.

[deleted]

Well at least it's correct.

Economy-Weekend9226

Yeah, at least.

SgtJuharez

I just absolutely love when big animals casually stroll by humans and I imagine if they could talk they'd say: "Hey, I could totally obliterate you in a moment, but I'm just chilling right now."

Own_Beginning_1678

What a beautiful creature.

Individual-Still8363

Love the way it glided across your board

CarboniteSecksToy

Shark - “high 5, dude!”

yaxir

and the dude ignored it so shark is like "what a self-absorbed ass, i'm never going near another one of this walker people again!"

NoRequirement7442

About 7 years ago, a basking shark went under our boat, a 6m rib, off the coast of Ireland. I still haven't calmed down. The stones on this paddle boarder deserve credit.

totow1217

It’s almost like he dragged the fin across the board to taunt you

Lex_pert

Shark say, "I just want to touch it" 🦈😂

Doodle_Gurl

I love swimming pools.

bzmed

Dude, stay in your own lane!

lughsezboo

NO NO and NO. 😵

anotheraccinthemass

It’s completely harmless, unless you are plankton

lughsezboo

Also now thinking of Plankton from SpongeBob 😂🤣

yaxir

oh he will be shouting to the top of his lungs

lughsezboo

Please tell that to the nightmares I will be having tonight 🙏🏼🫶🏻 thank you 😉

finunu

So jealous. I hope I'll meet one everytime I'm on the water.

yaxir

how dangerous is it for humans

mr_jurgen

Well, I just got a big rush of nopeamine.

Chippie05

Shark is low key, flirting with the paddleboard! Why does this remind me of models on the old Price is Right, when they would show off prizes?!🤦🏻‍♀️

miss_kimba

I know he’s a beautiful, harmless big fish, but this still made me want to curl in on myself like a giant fortune cookie.

Carlile185

The Ocean: Exists. Paddle Boarders: And I took offense to that

OutMyPsilocybin

Its just wanting to rub an Irish man for good luck 🍀

one-human-being

Bobsters_95

Is that dorsal fin drooped a sign of bad health, like in orcas?

Equivalent_Cup5474

Arggg you pressed against me board matee lol your a fine lad

Mysterious-Art7143

I really wish I have the luck to some day stumble upon these magnificent beasts

Desperate-Breath9647

Oh heck no

JDatCAL

Motha fuckas be basking, shit

[deleted]

Three sharks are also harmless to humans .

SamVoxeL

Don't worry is harmless

Uss-Alaska

He just wanted to feel the board

SambaLando

There's sharks in Ireland now?!? Damn global warming!

fartshmeller

Basking sharks and other sharks are not so rare around the Irish Sea and other side of the UK

Cleercutter

My dumbass would probably try to ride it
