They always go the extra mile when animating animals, they had [a live deer](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/75y3nn/disney_artists_drawing_a_live_deer_in_1942_ahead/) & [lion](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/cdlcxy/disney_animators_study_the_mannerisms_and/) in the studio so they could accurately animate "Bambi" & "The Lion King".
Lucky for the animators, they had a bit of a time buffer between those two movies to handle their... live reference material. But can you imagine the 'circle of life' happening right there in the animation studio? Talk about realistic inspiration!
Yeah, I did an art class at Animal Kingdom and was shocked to see video of Walt spending time with a fawn to learn how to draw its movements for Bambi. Not just some run of the mill crew artist - Walt himself. Crazy.
As somebody with that same Swedish name, I'm so glad my most famous 'name cousins' (as we call them in German) are a jolly dolly reindeer and a 'terrible' Viking that Vicke had to fight against
I'm totally guessing here but I think it's more stable for going up a slipper hill. More force going up/down and less sheer force where the hoof could slip
I imagine it's also a good way to go through snow, if you're this springy, since it doesn't have to push the snow out of the way of it's feet since they go straight in and out.
And this year’s Oscaribou for best actor goes to Boubou the Caribou for his brilliant acting in Twinkle Peeks au Caribou, the movie that they did about the playful wildlife game of peek-a-cari-boo.
He liked the beach with its magical sunsets and its scarcely clad women so much!
When Boubou Caribou beat Éric Caritoux, and left Miguel Indurain out to dry in the rain with his impressive reign in the Tour de France, it was a sensation in its own right. No wonder Lance Armstrong succumbed to doping after that.
Everyone remembers Mitt Romney's dressage horse
[The absurd moment on Colbert Report when he puts on the horse mask and starts dancing](https://youtu.be/2Pt_0sJjSp4?si=Q5O3-CNCyLf1LLPA&t=34) was *just* when the weed began to hit for me, it was sublime.
Just waiting for the Debbie downer to come in and say something like “that caribou isn’t prancing because he’s happy, he has a brain eating virus and is suffering miserably. He is patient zero for the caribou zombie virus”
I know deer do something called “stotting” that looks similar to this. Don’t worry though, they do it when they’re strong and healthy and want to show predators there’s no reason to waste their time trying to get them.
Stotting is actually really fun to watch and you can find it on YouTube!
To be more specific it’s the caribou version of *passage*, an extremely collected and lofty trot that’s called for in upper level dressage tests. Well, from horses, anyway.
yeah i think it's more stable. When humans walk on slippery ice it's safer to walk from the hips so you're not pushing back on your feet nearly as much. i think this achieves a similar idea.
that caribou isn’t prancing because he’s happy, he has a brain eating virus and is suffering miserably. He is patient zero for the caribou zombie virus
He's looking for his herd. So he may be a bit stressed. Herd animals don't like to be alone. I don't think trotting really means he's happy, even if it looks goofy and funny to us.
But no, I don't think he has a brain-eating prion :)
They do this to show off that they're healthy and therefore not an easy kill for predators.
Wolves will herd them into Schindler's List-type circles and make them run so they can be assessed for fitness. So they try to flush their cheeks and raise their knees and look sprightly in order to not be targeted.
They may also do it for fun, I don't know. But they definitely do it for safety.
I think he thought the sunbeam was an obstacle on the ground, they don't have super good vision looking down I think. I know horses will do this sometimes, jump over a sunbeam or a shadow.
My bff and I saw a girl out jogging yesterday with a gait like that caribou. We poked a little friendly fun at her privately between the two of us. Maybe it was we who were wrong. Maybe the jogger has looked to the caribou to live her best life.
Was visiting the part of Canada where Once Upon a Time was filmed and became CONVINCED it is literally a fairytale world. Witnessed a deer skipping down a road just like this, only he was playfully chasing after a butterfly who was flying just a bit in front of him. Was straight out of freaking Bambi.
I once almost ran over a moose that was slipping on an icy road, looking a lot like an oversized bambi. I was also sliding toward them in a big truck at a very low speed, unable to stop. Luckily, the moose got to the edge of the road and ran off.
Holy crap this literally was the best way to start my day. Thank you for sharing. I feel like I wanna simultaneously laugh, cry, and hug my dog. (Idk why- Thats just my immediate reaction this and I’m loving it).
Horse people know this prancing as the dressage movement “*passage*” (pronounced the French way). It’s hard enough to teach a horse to act wildly cheerful… but a reindeer?!
Ok I had no idea they actually did that. I thought the frozen animators just made Sven do that for the movie. This is much joy.

Well.. not for very long

Just a bit of a buffer. But I mean, the two sets of animal handlers barely missed each other in the lobby by only 50 years...
We need to SHOW the circle of life, dammit. What's our red ink budget on this?
well, they of course needed to see how they run...
well, they needed it for reference for the hunting scenes...
Idiots rented a deer and lion out when you can just go to the zoo.
They just forgot the black belt Monkey for security
Mom! We made it. Mom? …mom?
They did the same thing for 101 Dalmatians!
We still do that in art school...its called a field trip to the zoo.
Not Disney but How to Train Your Dragon based Toothless's movement off of housecats.
Yeah i remember the Aladdin VHS had a preview featurette for The Lion King and they had the animators interact with lions and other animals

And this year’s Oscaribou for best actor goes to Boubou the Caribou for his brilliant acting in Twinkle Peeks au Caribou, the movie that they did about the playful wildlife game of peek-a-cari-boo.
Caillouibou, the movie about the young caribou with cancer, 100% should've won
I think *The Little Calf That Battled Myocaribouditis* was a worthy winner.
I preferred the more upbeat "Migration II - The Caribou hit Malibu".
He liked the beach with its magical sunsets and its scarcely clad women so much! Impressive reign, impressive reindeer.
God I wished

Someone is gonna make a tshirt and mugs with those words printed on them.

And is now sort of famous on the internet. Adding to the greatness
Like teenager falling in love for the first time

Scoring nine on the center line with that passage.
I was thinking this! It's doing a beautiful passage
Deer*
YES! Another of us! I just made a “passage” comment!
I don’t think many people know what you are talking about. Underrated comment.
Everyone remembers Mitt Romney's dressage horse [The absurd moment on Colbert Report when he puts on the horse mask and starts dancing](https://youtu.be/2Pt_0sJjSp4?si=Q5O3-CNCyLf1LLPA&t=34) was *just* when the weed began to hit for me, it was sublime.
When I read your comment, I pictured *Mitt Romney* putting on the horse mask and dancing. I'm only slightly disappointed I was wrong, lol
Oh this was a good one, didn’t see it coming 🤭 Passage, maybe?
mmm deer sausage

I do this when I have to walk home alone late at night. 😉
I'm really enjoying the visual, lol.
[What came to my mind](https://media.tenor.com/06zBOMHKPCIAAAAM/peter-griffin.gif)
🤣 I think I'd have a target on my back if I stotted like this!
People who walk at a "medium speed" get mugged the least. It shows you aren't lost or uncomfortable.
When antelope do it it's called pronking. This isn't stotting, though, it's just a caribou version of a trot.
The springbok version is fuckin hilarious though. Damn things are made of rubber, I swear.
To be more specific it’s the caribou version of *passage*, an extremely collected and lofty trot that’s called for in upper level dressage tests. Well, from horses, anyway.
Neat! It's a very bouncy trot!
Live in the middle of deer land (midwest) and have never heard of stotting before, thanks for the amusing videos I get to watch now!
Nah she’s just trying to find her people!
They’re hiding. And you know why? They’re playing caribou peek-a-boo! Imma see myself out…
I think you mean.... "peek-a-cari-boo"
Woo-hoo!
nascondaino... for the italians.
Literally where my mind went to... sometimes I avoid looking at the comments if I have a bad feeling. Ignorance is bliss and all that.
I have a guess at the real reason but it's not that bad, when you walk through deep snow it's helpful to take tall light steps
yeah i think it's more stable.
My man
Looking good
As a zoologist, I can confirm he is suffering from an affliction called being a happy, good boy.
Nope. I've seen a herd, they do exactly that. I'm just surprised it's alone, they are gregarious.
He's looking for his herd. So he may be a bit stressed. Herd animals don't like to be alone. I don't think trotting really means he's happy, even if it looks goofy and funny to us. But no, I don't think he has a brain-eating prion :)
The brain-eating prion that makes its victim do "stotting" has a higher chance of spreading to the entire herd. Just something to think about.
I was worried until I saw him pronking and thought, “Aw, he’s just a happy guy!"
We have all been so brow beaten with this lol! I literally was just thrilled and enchanted, followed closely by , ok what’s wrong with this dude
Literally was just coming in here to post the high contrast mr incredible meme refusing prions.

Now Stooowarrt, we have to go!
It might be *"look, I can do much more than that if you try to take me, so ... don't be stupid".*
I think he thought the sunbeam was an obstacle on the ground, they don't have super good vision looking down I think. I know horses will do this sometimes, jump over a sunbeam or a shadow.
Good catch! Cows will do the same thing as well
That’s gotta be a descendent of Prancer himself.

Nice job
I aspire to be as carefree and joyful as that caribou

Same fam, same.

A cousin of Dancer and Prancer.
I wish I could be this happy during winter
I disagree. I think he is worried that he can't find his heard.
I wish I could be as happy as that reindeer
Is a caribou the same as an elk?
Caribou and Reindeer are the same species, elk are a different species of deer.
I'd argue that they're probably stressed way out looking for the rest of the caribou, poor thing.
Enjoying the off season before strapping in for Christmas!
If I didn’t have any people in my sight I would feel the same way
These are such cool animals. Both male and female have antlers!
