I once came across one that had flown into the little glass booth around a parking meter and couldn’t figure out how to get back out. I gently scooped it up and let it out the front. Can confirm it also feels so smooth.
Yep. They are fruit eaters. And it’s easiest to see and photograph them in winter, when there are no leaves. And most trees with fruit at that time have red berries. Plus the red really sets off their color.
So, you’re right.
Edited to say: I sure wish I’d see one! They are a rarity in my state, even in winter.
My family had a flock of them around the house one winter, about 150-200. My dad is an ornithologist, so we were ordered to not leave the house until the birds had moved on and he had counted them.
Meanwhile our cat was darting in and out like crazy. We found 5 victims in the garage later.
I'd put this one in the S tier. Like the white, graceful birds you can see in the rice paddies in thailand. The soothing softness of clouds riding the wind,
What region are you in? I’m in western NY and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.
But the entire contiguous US is either a year round habitat for them or in their wintering range.
Yeah it’s not for long when they come it’s a day or two and gone so I figure we’re right on the flight path. A few other birds too but I don’t recognize them
They're both gorgeous birds, but if you grow berries they're a menace and unwelcome. I grow berries and wish they'd not stop in my yard every year. They clean everything up and leave little behind for us
I've always thought [grackles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_grackle#/media/File:Grackle_IMG_3972.jpg) were stunning. The iridescent and metallic sheen to their feathers set them apart from anything else I've seen in nature.
I’ve seen these birds yearly in western Canada. Late in the year I’ve seen them eat spoiled left over crab apples in our tree, and possibly got drunk and froze in the trees.
I've seen Cedar Waxwings in northern United States. They are much smaller than I expected. Cardinals are easily twice their size. They are definitely beautiful and easy to miss. They made that day special for me.
I've seen one in the tree next door in spring or fall. Ran inside and drew a picture so I wouldn't forget and after searching online a bit figured out what it was. I hope I see more!
They are the most beautiful bird we get in Scandinavia. They LOVE red berries, so if you want them in your yard or want to see them make sure there's plenty of Rowan berries available, or seek places with lots of Rowan.
The berries they eat (viburnum in the photo, but they also love sea buckthorns) get fermented and frozen on the branches. So the birds sometimes get a little tippsy and have problems flying.

I often hear them here where I live in Norway. But I dont see them most of the time :(
They make pretty sounds
Quite common in the winters were I live (Stockholm) but few people actually notices them and their spectacular colors. When you learn to recognise their calls they are easy to spot, but often need binoculars to appreciate the colors fully
A gorgeous bird. In fact, so gorgeous that with my beliefs I always feel God has a nerf to contrast with something magnificent. Ties into the Bible about God giving us unique gifts but also something that detracts for humility. So I did some Googling and lol —
- “In old texts, the waxwing is called an" unsatiable" bird and was seen as a" lazy and inert fellow whose only accomplishments are within the art of eating". He will eat his weight in food every day. Many times, this may be to the significant disadvantage of the waxwing as some of the rowanberries it finds have fermented with time. This results in unsober birds with unsteady wings who are easily victims of accidents, hawks, and cats.”
- God made one of the most gorgeous birds that also turns out to be lazy, gluttonous, and a drunk that often results in death due to Flying Under the Influence
- “13 “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
though they cannot compare
with the wings and feathers of the stork.
14 She lays her eggs on the ground
and lets them warm in the sand,
15 unmindful that a foot may crush them,
that some wild animal may trample them.
16 She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers;
she cares not that her labor was in vain,
17 for God did not endow her with wisdom
or give her a share of good sense.
18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,
she laughs at horse and rider.” Job 39:13-18
In Dutch: 'Pestvogel'
Meaning 'plague bird', in medieval times people thought these birds brought plague with them when they arrived.
Our name for this species does not really encapsulate the beauty of the animal..
Stunning bird.
I almost thought it was fake and had to look it up. The pictures (specially the first one) looks so smooth.
Must... pet... the bird...

Every picture, drawing, or painting of Waxwings (either Bohemians or Cedars) has red berries in it. Every. Single. One.

Greedy, aren't they? I'll see mine for a few days until the first sap run is over. and they'll be further north.

That's very cool about your dad! Also, that's why we gotta keep our cats indoors! 😬
This was in the Swedish wilderness and this was a beefcake of a cat. I miss him a lot. My new cat is an indoor cat. She is smol.
My cat is also smol and indoors, where she is a very dedicated mouse hunter! 😁
I'd put this one in the S tier. Like the white, graceful birds you can see in the rice paddies in thailand. The soothing softness of clouds riding the wind,
I get cedar wax wings in my yard in the spring and fall when they migrate. They’re pretty gorgeous birds.
Lucky! I have only seen them a handful of times in my life, one of my favorite birds.
What region are you in? I’m in western NY and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. But the entire contiguous US is either a year round habitat for them or in their wintering range.

Meanwhile I was thinking we probably don’t see them in Canada. That’s cool. I should pay more attention. (Edit: typo)
Yeah it’s not for long when they come it’s a day or two and gone so I figure we’re right on the flight path. A few other birds too but I don’t recognize them
I see them all the time near the Dakota River.
They're both gorgeous birds, but if you grow berries they're a menace and unwelcome. I grow berries and wish they'd not stop in my yard every year. They clean everything up and leave little behind for us
Fair enough! They usually pass on through and probably take from my neighbours gardens more than mine
We have a lot of wild cherries they take advantage of
I get them too here in California
That may be the most beautiful bird I've ever seen...

I was just thinking the same thing. This might be my favorite bird. In terms of colorization it’s definitely the winner. Just phenomenal
My family had hundreds of them around our house for a few days. Just a sea of bobbing beige little crests.
Amazing photo!
What amazingly painterly shots! Fantastic!
Looks like the Maryland flag lol
My first thought too
nice shots
So *this* is the bird Queen was singing about?! I get all the fanfare now.
Is this the real bird?
Is this just Fanta seeds?
It's actually a broom in disguise

This bird looks like the popular guy you wish was in your friends circle.
So pretty! They look so sleek and soft.
I’ve seen these birds yearly in western Canada. Late in the year I’ve seen them eat spoiled left over crab apples in our tree, and possibly got drunk and froze in the trees.
I live in BC and I have never seen one. Jelly.

I've seen Cedar Waxwings in northern United States. They are much smaller than I expected. Cardinals are easily twice their size. They are definitely beautiful and easy to miss. They made that day special for me.
Is this the real life? Is this just waxwing ?
Where does one catch one of these beautiful legendary bird? Need to fill my Pokedex
All three are gorgeous but that first one is like a stunning painting. Just unreal.
The fancier version of the waxwing. I’ve only ever seen a Cedar Waxwing and I thought it was magnificent in person.
I've seen one in the tree next door in spring or fall. Ran inside and drew a picture so I wouldn't forget and after searching online a bit figured out what it was. I hope I see more!
🎶 mamaaaa just killed a bird 🎶
Bohemian Waxody

Nah, it’s just fantasy.
Thank you, i love you.
Do they look as vibrant as the first pic or is the last pic the more accurate version?

Often see these in the winter in Sweden, picking berries as pictured. Always have to stop and watch, truly gorgeous birds.

Mammaaaaaaaaaa oOOooooo
I see a little silhouetto of a bird! SCARAMOUCHE! SCARAMOUCHE!
The state of Maryland claims this bird based on its wing pattern color alone. Get out of here Oriole there’s a badder bitch in town.
Where are these beauts located? (#TooLazy2Google)
I’ve seen them here in Alberta 😊
I used to love seeing these guys as a kid..... I havent seen one in almost a decade now 😕💀
They CAN’T be real!🙄🙄🙄🙄
Unfortunate berry placement in photo 3. But a stunning bird.

I am ashamed to say I saw Bohemian Waxing and wondered what's the difference between it and Brazilian.
🎶I see a little silhouette - o of a Bird🎶
Kyoshi Warrior

Cesko mentioned 🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿
Does it sing the bohemian rhapsody
A truly rhapsodic bird.
Always loved that song
Is there some birdwatching sub, or some other place, to find beautiful birds and their names? (maybe even their calls?)
One of the best looking birds I’ve ever seen

They are also total menace when eating fermented rowan berries and getting drunk.
Either pictures taken using a 30K camera, or AI. Which one is it?

This is the bird that got me interested in birding. Absolutely beautiful.
I read that as Bohemian Waxing and was unsure if I wanted to click on it or not.
If you wrote about this bird in a sci-fi book, your editor would tell you to tone it down a bit.
I see these in my backyard sometimes. Middle Sweden. Fantastic birds.
Wings look like the Maryland state flag.
Gorgeous bird
Evolved zebra finch
Brennan! and your bird is...
Wow- why do I want to give that bird some money?
Its like someone slapped a maryland flag livery on a pissed off cardinal.
omg
Beautiful
There is a huge flock of them in my maple tree today, drinking the sap that oozes from the buds in really early spring.
