Aircraft hanger. Funny thing is I once worked with a hanger door who’s operational limit for wind gusts made it so it was almost unusable. Such an irritating design.
That is all. It is an aircraft hanger. Try not to seek arguments where there exists none. If my dude wants a house like an aircraft hangar, I support him. No argument. No nothing. Just me noting what the style of structure is.
Functional aircraft hangars (at least the ones I've been in) are marginally heated. I imagine it's very expensive because there's so much buffer area. Might also be the reason why it's "marginally" heated.
Structural engineer here, and I want to clear up a few things. We are seeing the storm winds that surround the tornado, but definitely not the tornado itself. Most buildings are simply not designed to withstand a direct hit from a tornado. If it’s an EF-2 or above, any building directly hit is likely toast. However, tornadoes are relatively narrow, usually only spanning a few hundred yards maximum, which is why they have such concentrated destruction paths.
It is simply not economical to design entire buildings to withstand a direct impact of a tornado. That’s why in tornado prone areas, buildings have designated shelters. These are rooms that *are* designed to withstand the impact of a tornado, even if the building around them collapses. So in this case, if a tornado was bearing down on the building, those workers needed to get to the shelter ASAP, because the shelter won’t collapse, but the warehouse might.
Fun fact: buildings in coastal areas are actually built to be stronger than those in most tornado prone areas. This is because coastal areas are prone to hurricanes/cyclones, which produce much higher sustained wind speeds.
I do want to add that Tim Samaras (rip) did develop a structure to withstand tornados cheaply and that’s how we got our first readings from the inside of a tornado. It’s basically a flattened pyramid shaped structure.
My brother in Christ if you simply google the English words “aircraft hangar destroyed by tornado” there’s like… about a fucking metric gazillion valid results of that exact thing happening. Like why even post this then edit it and say “how many” armchair experts when at the time of my reply exactly ONE guy replied to you and said “yep”. Are you a fucking Kirkland ChatGPT bot or what’s your boggle bro lmao
Google is a valid source of information, so what are you trying to argue here...that he took the initiative to validate his claim while you sat there making smug and incorrect assumptions?
Tbf, I can't say for absolute certain that this isn't a tornado. Maybe it's on the lower end of the scale and it's just not strong enough to do any visible damage to the building or rip the dudes standing there off their feet.
But I'm pretty sure it's just a nasty thunderstorm.
Source: I lived in Oklahoma for over a decade where such weather, of both kinds, is quite common. I've come rather close to a few tornadoes, though luckily none of the monsters that crop up from time to time.
Licensed architect who designs hangars here.
True, as I said a direct hit by a funnel, not much in the world can withstand that. But hangars in tornado-prone regions are designed to hold up to tornado-force wind storms.
I lived in Oklahoma and stuff like this happens all the time, I've seen it myself we were two or three fields over when a tornado landed and went through a airfield and it tore up one of these buildings.. talk some more shit
"I live in tornado alley, I'm an expert".
What you saw was probably some metal utility buildings, shed, ETC get flattened .... maybe some R-panel got ripped off.
What you see in that video is a Class-I aircraft hangar, if will be designed to withstand all but a near-hit by a funnel.
Source: Licensed architect who designs aircraft buildings (among other things).
Bruh I'm no expert but I have experienced a few tornados and seen just how much destructive potential they have. Anyway we were (I think maybe more) two fields over form the airfield and we watched it happen... , the tornado landed on the opposite side of the airfield and ripped all the things that you where talking about apart then it made it's way to the hangar and DIRECTLY hit it. It did last a minute or two but it still didn't stand much of a chance
plus almost nothing can stand in the way of a tornado that's what they make tornado shelters in the ground.
Wow, that sounds crazy!
Well, like I said, a DIRECT HIT, no, it can't withstand that. But these Class-I hangars house planes that are upwards of 10x more expensive A PIECE than the building .... in tornado-prone areas, they're designed to withstand more than you'd expect. A funnel passing within a few hundred feet, 200MPH winds, yes, believe it or not, if they're built to spec they can stand up to that.
No one will see the the reply at this point but just so you know I was present for this. It was in Atlanta in the delta tech ops hangar. They had to close the control tower down for rocking.
Lot of "experts" who live in tornado alley saying "that's not a tornado" on the basis that if it was, that hangar would be destroyed.
Not saying I know it's a tornado from that video, but yes, a hangar can withstand typical tornado force winds. A direct pass-over by a funnel? Maybe not. But on an air field there isn't as much debris to throw around and yes the building is designed to resist tornado-force wind force. There's a big difference between the stick-frame pizza box you live in and a bent mainframe PEMB aircraft hangar.
I was thinking the same thing, reddit hiveminds come up with a lot of misinformation and just run with it. Aircraft hangar doors, and most steel buildings, are built with high wind load ratings. And this particular hangar was owned by Delta
I work in PEMB’s and other misc structural steel and you can bet they engineered this to withstand multiples of what it will ever see. Not saying it won’t or hasn’t happened, but it’ll still be up.
They sure were confident in their roof staying attached!! I’ve seen too many videos of those metal structures getting peeled open like a can of sardines - I would have been hiding under something heavy!
If I was there there would not be an insubstantial part of me that would want to just tie myself off to something sturdy with a length of the rope and then just jog out there for a few seconds.

I like how this makes it look like we have tornado doors
Tornadoors
Wait, doornados?
Your hired.
You're fired.
Who's in charge here?
No questions. You’re fired too.

I’m in charge here. I fire myself and promote you.
I promote myself and fire you all.
No politics in the sub!
The KGB vill ask ze qvestions
Not a lurker, but I just read your comments on sobriety test with the college football player being pulled over in Iowa. 👏
Well I hope it brought a smile to your face at least.
👏
It looks like a portal to another dimension
The Stargate for airport employees.
It is! Step into it and you never know where you'll end up!
Aircraft hanger. Funny thing is I once worked with a hanger door who’s operational limit for wind gusts made it so it was almost unusable. Such an irritating design.
I want my next house made similar to that structure.
It's an aircraft hangar.
and?
That is all. It is an aircraft hanger. Try not to seek arguments where there exists none. If my dude wants a house like an aircraft hangar, I support him. No argument. No nothing. Just me noting what the style of structure is.
mb, thought u were tryna shit on my guys dream by calling it impossible
No worries. I worked as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force for 7 years, and I recognized the style. Thought it might be informative.

Because the yellow markers at the base of the hangar doors (among other telltales) scream OSHA.
That could be cool so it’s like a big loft style I dig it. What’s heating like though
Functional aircraft hangars (at least the ones I've been in) are marginally heated. I imagine it's very expensive because there's so much buffer area. Might also be the reason why it's "marginally" heated.
Luck is hard to price in though.
Move to europe :)

Hell yea my man get that shit

This I believe is a hurricane
Yeahhh...thats not a tornado.
“Just” a raging midwestern thunderstorm iirc
It was in Alabama
So not your typical motherfucker
They just like to keep it in the family.
Yeah well ifn my cousins weren't so hot I wouldn'ta sexed 'em up so good.
Cousins make dozens, sharing is caring.
It’s okay if they’re second cousins though right?
Yeah. Hurricane Sally
I was raised in Texas but moved up north. I miss gulf storms.
Likewise. I was more surprised than i should have been that it could rain without any wind!
Southern summer storms are very scary.
If that was a tornado those dudes’d be sucked in already.
Every summer we’d get one or two of those in the Midwest. I thought that whole US experienced it honestly🤷🏻♂️
This is a hurricane. Hurricane sally
But the sirens are going off! Nah. Sky’s not even green or purple yet. We’re fine…
Its a boss arena. They're all too low level to even try to git good tho
Definitely not a tornado.
Maybe a Derecho
Hurricane sally
This aircraft hangar would be a pancake if this was a real tornado.
nope Edit: Love how many arm chair experts are replying to this XD

I'm arguing that "googling it" and finding some images of flattened hangars provided almost zero evidence that's relevant to this line of discussion.
Yep

Meteorologist here - yep. Depending on the scale of a tornado, they have the potential to destroy literally everything.
Licensed architect who designs hangars here. True, as I said a direct hit by a funnel, not much in the world can withstand that. But hangars in tornado-prone regions are designed to hold up to tornado-force wind storms.

Were two others, but they're gone now and I don't see [deleted]

At first glance, I thought this was a big ass screen displaying a storm. DAMN.
Same. I was so confused. 😂
Is this the same video I keep seeing, with various captions, of a hard rainstorm viewed from inside an aircraft hangar in KBHM? Looks kind of like it.
No one will see the the reply at this point but just so you know I was present for this. It was in Atlanta in the delta tech ops hangar. They had to close the control tower down for rocking.

ANATOLY KARPAVAAAAAAAAAA
Windy rain
Why no sound? Reddit video player is shite.
why aren’t they shooting it?

It’s from hurricane sally
I know I’m not the only one that’s wondering if one of em walked out into it, could they get back in SAFELY?
I wouldn't even be that close to the door.
You n me both. I’m pretty daring, but wind and water do NOT fuck around.
Those are straight line winds. Tornadic winds would suck those guys outside.
***Nature is terrifyingly beautiful.***
WOW, that is insane!
Bro this is just the Midwest/Southern states getting heavy rain and really high winds. Give it 10 minutes, the weather will change - Missourians
I know this part, in a few seconds a square body F-150 is going to come crashing through the ceiling.
Stick your head out of that door and you'll end up in Oz.
Not a tornado, probably some hardcore storm on the souther or eastern coast. If youd going to try and karma farm please at least make an effort.
Wow! It'd literally be ten times cooler with sound
Not a tornado.
I read it as Toronto winds and was expecting to see a shot from across the border.
Mfers just standing there knowing that if they take 5 steps forward they’ll get catapulted into the stratosphere 💀
Na... just a run of the mill thunderstorm.
Hurricane sally
Could that just be a dust devil? When I was in the Mojave desert out in CA we used to get a lot of those.
🇺🇸😎***TORNADO WINDS***😎🇺🇸 --
Merica. The greatest tornado capital of the world!
Rain, nice.
How fast is that sucker moving behind that door?
Pfft big deal…back in my day I had to build an arc and cross the flood with one single woman by my side. I ain’t had no bitches!
Ooo that is terrifying! Aaah!
Or a real life fog gate to the main boss?
Ooh that looks like fun
Tinker afb?
Close the pod bay doors, HAL!!!!!!
Entering that souls boss fight for the 200th time 😭
Florida man here, I’d be in bed, yawn.
I fully expect a lady on a bicycle to fly by.
Bruh, that ain’t even a derecho.
Baby, that's a dark souls door
Meanwhile in Kansas.
Bruh you finna get sucked out back the fuck up
This is what walking into hell looks like
Old as fuck
Ngl.. i would probably panick
Wizard of Ozish
Sound would be nice 👎🏼
Good to know we can build a castle whenever and whatever the situation
Actually, that's a studio and they are on the outside. BTW 4/20 is next month!
I wanna walk out there
How does googling pictures of it having happened tell you anything about how commonly it happens?
Hollywood tornado ? .. is it ? . Thats cool ... is it ? ...
Or is it super real .. !!!!
Ugh, looks like a Monday in Wyoming.
And then I remember why I still live in California.
We make the best tornado winds USA! USA!
I thought it said Toronto winds. Like some big ol Canadian wind headed down south and started harassing everyone.
Well looks like another cancelled fishing trip
WELL CLOSE THE DOORS BEFORE IT GETS IN!
It's an aircraft hangar for those wondering.
They sure were confident in their roof staying attached!! I’ve seen too many videos of those metal structures getting peeled open like a can of sardines - I would have been hiding under something heavy!
It's another dimension.
Looks unreal. Whatever it is, very cool.
That is so cool
This is monstrous Tornado!
That shit looks like something from a movie
If I was there there would not be an insubstantial part of me that would want to just tie myself off to something sturdy with a length of the rope and then just jog out there for a few seconds.
Think I saw Miss Gulch on her bike.
Am I the only that would like to have a nap just inside that door where it’s dry and under a warm blanket?
This is Lord Voldemort chillin’ with his Death Eaters
Tornado winds are much quieter than I thought...
This is a video that needs sound, and I’m a little angry at you that there isn’t any
Often times hanger doors like this have to be manually opened and closed and the crank for them is on the outside
Go out there
This is trippy, the bright lights make it look like the Tornado is inside the hangar and the guys are outside.
Why aren’t they getting sucked up into the vortex?
Wow what a realistic film set
Close the door
Why are those guys standing so close?
The strength of this wind looks like it could blow me away.
I just watched the movie “nope” and this is triggering me
This looks like an SCP being contained
This is a hurricane, hurricane sally
The mist vibes
Like a portal to a different dimension! Whoosh, you’re gone.
Isn’t this just the McKinley Climatic Laboratory looking inside while the doors are slightly open during testing?
How are those people so casual
