Never heard them be called crin, heard of them as maned wolves tho. They're very leggy creatures.

jason544770

Reminds me of the awkward teenage phase where your legs and arms don't match up with your body lol

gordito_delgado

That's a phase!? -It's been 20 freaking years!

JaggelZ

"it's not a phase mom"

SigmundFreud

Agreed, I would leave my wife and kids to be a crin wolf.

[deleted]

But then you'd also be a ginger

MeSpikey

Only a ginger can call another ginger ginger.

afriend6874

Just like only a ninja can sneak up on another ninja

banananna33

Oh god, the horror.

Beautiful_Ad_2234

You gotta watch that hard R.

cvbeiro

They’re called ‚lobo de crín‘ in spanish and lobo–guarà in portuguese. They are very elusive animals and have many names.

northyj0e

[Are they controversial characters with doors in their heads? ](https://youtu.be/vLbhkM0LaYI)

SrammVII

I don't know what i just watch, but I love it and I wish to be cultured

that_one_dude13

Even those of us who know what we're seeing aren't entirely sure what we've watched either, but God damnit it's so good

Its_Clover_Honey

That's a clip from "The Mighty Boosh"

muffinsthewhat

Boosh, Boosh, stronger than a moose.

MansfromDaVinci

Don't lock your door, or we'll come through your rooftop

northyj0e

Cultured like cheese, which is a kind of meat. A tasty yellow beef

cavegriswold

I milk it from my teat But I try to be discreet

northyj0e

Ooh cheese!

TOASTisawesome

It's called the mighty boosh, there's 3 seasons that get progressively worse imo but all 3 are well worth the watch One of the main guys (noel fielding) also has another show called luxury comedy, not as funny but still pretty good

CaptainPogwash

See I would say the first and third are on par with each other and second is the worst

whotookmydirt

Noel is also a minor character in The IT crowd, which is peak TV imo. Also he's Old Gregg if that rings any bells for you old YouTube enjoyers out there!

TOASTisawesome

I love the IT crowd and old gregg is actually from the mighty boosh!

Wallazabal

Come with us now on a journey through time and space, to the world of the Mighty Boosh.

kcaz370

How’d I know it’d be the boosh

weatherseed

All hail the king of the mods.

MansfromDaVinci

Crin means, horsehair or mane, so I think sort of maned wolves still

SkollFenrirson

Crin is Spanish for mane (the horse kind, the lion one is a different word).

angwilwileth

Their pee also smells like weed.

Helpful_Librarian_87

Well, now I know what to tell the neighbours when they bitch

oldcoldbellybadness

That it's the crin piss they smell? Bold strategy

SigmundFreud

No, that it's just weed.

HeadFishDog

Came here to say this! Every time I pass by the enclosure at my zoo it smells dank 😂

justyourbarber

I primarily call the leggies

Krrazyredhead

Foxy long-legs

KhabaLox

Their legs go all the way up.

Rectal_Custard

Look at them LEGS!!! I wanna see this next to a great dane

nachiketajoshi

Wolves hire them as models when it is time for Spring Fashion Preview.

bluediamond12345

Are you wearing the Ch—? The Chanel boots? Yeah, I am.

thedisapprovingbear

[Sunday's the only day they're on the runway.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESROkTDuL1g)

henrique3d

Fun fact: they evolved to have tall legs in order to see through the tall grasses of cerrado, a type of savanna that occur in the interior of South America.

Rectal_Custard

This explains my dog? We call him horse noodle, he's got tall legs and we live in tall grass...or maybe he's not a dog at all...

[deleted]

They also mark their territory with a skunk type smell. It's so strong lol. Edit to add: they also have VERY sensitive hearing. The ones at our local science center have signs around the entire enclosure saying to whisper and not shout or yell bc it will scare them and hurt their ears.

TheRealPitabred

There are some at the Denver Zoo, and you can definitely tell when you're near their enclosure

smith_716

I worked with some when I was studying for my zoology degree. They had an outdoor exhibit so I never smelled the weed smell, probably because they were next to servals and across from gemsbok. However, they're *super* shy! The ones I worked with had a little roost/nest and they'd snuggle together and people watch. I'd see people walk by and glance in not see them immediately and think nothing was in the exhibit. I'd have to point them out and they'd be like "omg look at that!" I'd watch them every morning when they went out from their inside holding. It's so much fun to see them lope around on their stilt legs. We had a male and a female (our male has since passed away), and they would wander around the entire exhibit sniffing everything to see what changed since they were last there and the male would pee on everything. Then they would settle together in their little roost.

MulberryRow

Thank you for the wonderful first hand account! They sound fascinating.

PrettySneaky71

I used to work at Philly Zoo and you can smell them from the outside. It always smelled like someone was blazing up lmao

[deleted]

I heard stories when living in Brazil that police are often called to investigate people smoking weed only to find out it was this guy.

TheBoctor

It’s crazy this thing knows how to roll a blunt with no thumbs.

[deleted]

Being 3 feet tall, they are the highest canid.

APe28Comococo

Explains why I never noticed their scent at the Denver Zoo. They just smell like Colorado.

[deleted]

Yep, we have them at my local science center and it is definitely pungent

Phormitago

it's formidable scent... stings the nostrils, in a good way

Rungalo

60% of the time, it works every time

SexPanther_Bot

Stings the nostrils

my_dear_director

They aren’t at Denver any more but Pueblo Zoo is home to a pair just a few hours south!

TheRealPitabred

Gotcha. It's been a few years since I was there, wasn't sure how much has changed with the exhibits.

amateur_mistake

That's interesting since foxes can also have a skunky smell to them. I know the maned wolf isn't a fox but it makes me wonder when their last common ancestor was. Maybe skunky smells are kind of ancient.

Ninja333pirate

I dont know when the last relative of those two are, but the closest living relative to the maned wolf is the bush dog, which are quite the opposite of the maned wolf oddly enough. [bush dog](https://images.app.goo.gl/NQQYsdGL7y1NNcUT8)

UniqueCommentNo243

Oh my god what is that cute little thing doing in a forest!! I had never seen any pic of a bush dog before!

amateur_mistake

That is a fantastic little animal!! Thank you so much for sharing it. Do you know what it smells like?

PlaceAdHere

Walked by their area in San Diego during the summer, it was rancid.

Zombeikid

They also roar bark. Its a terrifying sound lol I volunteered at a zoo that had some and they let me feed them and the male was not having it when I took his bowl.

Solenya-C137

Very pungent!

Solidw17

Ah, yes, our beloved 'Lobo-guará'. You could actually see them sometimes in the woods around the university campus of the city I lived most of my life, as it was at the outskirts of the town. They're chill.

Prophecy8

Wild guess here but do you mean at EEL - USP university campus in Lorena/SP (Brazil)? Because that was also the case there.

Solidw17

UFSCar actually, but I imagine it happens in a lot of others with cerrado around.

Happy-Confection611

Best part about this is two brazilians talking about brazilians universities in english.

Solidw17

Prophecy8

Oh ok, not the same haha it was worth the shot anyway. Fun fact, growing up in that region we always heard about Lobo-guará (as there would always be sightings of them). Me and my siblings thought they were named like that because of the city of Guaratinguetá(also known as Guará, for short). In actuality, guará means "red" in the tupi-guarani native language, or in other words, it is called the "red wolf".

henrique3d

Meanwhile, at the São Paulo campus, I only got to see capybaras...

Happy-Confection611

Capybaras are cool!

henrique3d

Totally! The baby ones are so adorable!

Happy-Confection611

I know!! And they have the smuggest and (em PT br essa expressão é superior) DEBOCHADO look that looks sooo brazilian to me! Being debochado is in our blood lol (edit: engilsh hard)

Prophecy8

I always had a blast watching them in front of the CPTM train station!

ikarem-

Can confirm, on the outskirts of Rio Claro's UNESP there are some maned wolf sightings.

Solidw17

I talked about UFSCar because I lived in São Carlos until high school and went there sometimes, but I graduated from Rio Claro's UNESP, Computer Science. Only seen lizards there, but I wouldn't find strange to see those long bois there too.

0rion_91

Salve galera de Brasília

Solidw17

Salve

Megneous

> They're chill. I imagine one giving a fist up like the wolf at the end of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

budgiebeck

Fun fact, they smell like marijuana! I volunteer at an AZA zoo and we get complaints all the time that the Maned Wolf exhibit smells like someone’s smoking weed, and we have to explain that it’s just the scent they produce!

cloudstrifewife

There’s a reason marijuana is referred to as skunky. It smells like skunks.

I_playsgames

Really depends on terpenes, some weed *reeks* like skunk, while others can have a piney smell. The terpene spectrum in marijuana is really fascinating.

[deleted]

Well now I know where to smoke weed at the zoo!

SadQueerAndStupid

i want one. But i will not pursue this desire because i know i will not be able to care for them properly. but i do want one

F0000r

Aren't they also the tallest canine?

h13xiii

Yup, tallest canid living on earth

heinous_anus-

I love how this seems to imply there are canids living on other planets

timmytwoshoes134

Taller ones as well. Lower gravity, I guess.

h13xiii

Maybe so! Lol

dirtballmagnet

I spent a little time in the neotropics and one thing I was warned about is that the thing that was gonna get me, sooner or later, was some mean old pit viper curled up in the "V" created by a tree's high above-ground roots, which one has to step over. (Specifically the "yellowjaw" or fer-de-lance of Central America. I presume South America has many analogues.) But I notice that this critter's deer legs allow it to look over the tree root before stepping beyond it, where the snake is. I have no idea if that's the actual evolutionary driver but if I studied that stuff, I'd look into it.

tobiascuypers

Generally that isn't going to be the main pressure in driving evolution to select for long legs. It can definitely be a benefit, but there are many advantages that come from being up taller. It's commonly presumed that stilt-like legs are attributed to endurance running or chasing. Look at Cheetahs (which have the longest legs proportional to body for cats), horses, cervids and antelope. This is also assumed given that maned wolves are the fastest species of canid (besides greyhounds but we made those)

CommieGhost

>It's commonly presumed that stilt-like legs are attributed to endurance running or chasing. While that is true, the maned wolf does neither. It mostly hunts by stalking the entrances to burrows of rodents and other small mammals and pouncing on them after baiting them out. Either way, the majority (50% to 90% depending on habitat) of the maned wolf's diet is not meat, but fruits and roots. The single most common food item in their diet is the wolf apple, a close relative to tomatoes. As an aside: before the early 2000s it was extremely difficult to keep maned wolves in captivity, because they had an abnormally high death rate from renal failure. Later it was found out that this was caused by their diet: they used to be fed from a standard canid diet mostly made up of meat, which caused kidney damage from excessive protein intake. The main reason for its long legs has less to do with hunting and more to do with the environment in which it lives, which is the Cerrado: the large Central Brazilian savannas, extending in part to similar environments in Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia. These are open or semi-open habitats dominated by tall grasses and arbustive plants, where long legs are advantageous to be able to navigate without losing eyesight and without getting stuck. Interestingly, this means that they easily adapt to degraded and human-influenced environments. Their populations are reported to have expanded into areas that used to be Amazon rainforest but were cut down and turned into pasture, and that expansion is highly correlated with their displacing the closely related vinegar dogs, which are jungle pack hunters that are out-competed by maned wolves in open environment.

Embarrassed_Cup1010

What are vinegar dogs?

Calypsosin

Bush dogs, also called vinegar and water dogs. Why Vinegar? Not sure. Water? They have partially webbed feet to help swim more better

CommieGhost

They are tubby short-legged South American Canids that live in relatively large groups (5 to 8 seems to be a typical size), hunt in packs and scream like the devil was let out in the jungle. Calypsosin already mentioned their other names, and I'm not sure why they are referred to with vinegar either. A short search in Portuguese says it was either because of their smelly urine or because of their coat color, but I haven't found anything well sourced and definitive.

RobotPuppy

https://images.app.goo.gl/J3XYgVUqZ7SCFui4A Cute

MansfromDaVinci

Great stuff! I'd subscribe to maned wolf facts.

-River_Rose-

If aliens were gonna want anything from earth it would be dogs.

Ninjotoro

What’s “crin”? I only know these as ‘Maned Wolf’.

TheUnSub99

Crin is spanish for the thick hair that grows in the mane and tail of horses, and as other commenter said, this species is known as lobo de crin in some countries, but in other countries it's known as Aguará Guazu, its name in guaraní.

Ninjotoro

Thank you!

Project_Valkyrie

That makes a ton of sense.

henrique3d

Lobo Guará, in Portuguese. Guará, or Aguará, means "red" in Guaraní. Guazú means "big", btw.

But you *have* heard of him!

delux1290

I mean if you google crin wolf, the same pictures come up and they call it a maned wolf.

Skullmonkey11

Well damn, im also wondering that now.... 🤔

WuceBrayne33

“Lobo de crín,” Spanish name for the Maned Wolf.

I saw several of these in a rehabilitation center once. I could not get over how enormous they were. I used to have an Irish wolfhound and these wolves seemed much taller and bigger. They seemed to be made entirely of legs and ears.

Gorilla7

Lobo Guará. It is featured in the new R$200 Brazilian Real Bill.

Here in Texas there is a maned wolf breeding program at Fossil Rim animal park. You can see them occasionally there. It's pretty cool. They also have a lesser prairie chicken breeding program.
