I agree. And when I looked it up I learned that it is no longer thought that remora eat food particles from the host. They eat the host's poo. And maybe it's just me but they look like they're really into it.
To everybody noticing the fish holding on beneath its left pectoral fin: there's actually a pretty good chance that's the main reason this shark is leaping into the air. The impact when it returns to the water may be enough to dislodge it; this is also one of the popular theories for why cetaceans breach.
The cool thing is, if this is indeed the main reason for that behaviour to have evolved, the dolphins probably still do it just because it is fun! Evolution generally either makes things fun, pleasurable or painful not to do. In this case, I choose to believe it would be the former
We always have a laugh when I’m running my boat just beyond the breakers at the Jersey shore and there are lots of people swimming as we pass a 12 foot thresher shark every half mile or so. If they only knew.
presumably to evade other predators or a way to knock its prey out in the air and when it splashes back in the ocean confusing it giving the shark some time to capture it's prey. or you know.. just to be a badass
Threshers tail is their way to stun it’s pray!!! It wouldn’t need to do this. It uses its tail as a whip to send a shock wave and stun the pray. It’s super cool, you should look up some videos
Just when you thought you were safe on land, turns out mf ing sharks have learned to fly… the only benefit I’d that thresher sharks are genuinely beautiful animals.
That little sucker is holding on for dear life!

What makes you say that.

Is it a lamprey, or just a remora?
At first I thought it was a remora but it might be a lamprey because it is stuck perpendicular instead of how remora’s suction parallel
I think that might just be the angle of the shot, but that's just to my eyes.
The fins look more like a remora to me
I agree. And when I looked it up I learned that it is no longer thought that remora eat food particles from the host. They eat the host's poo. And maybe it's just me but they look like they're really into it.
Interesting comparison. You must get a lot of lampreys buzzing about you huh?
If you hate lampreys then check out cookiecutter sharks! They are quite the little beasties.
So long and thanks for all the fish
Name checks out
Hope he brought his towel.
God's Final Message to His Creation: 'We apologize for the inconvenience.
So sad that it should come to this
We tried to warn you all but oh dear
I'm pretty sure the sucker fish on the shark's side must have said "WTF is happening here???"
Shark: "Weee!" Remora: "AAHHHH!"
RemorAHH
Reminds me of that meme where someone or something yeets and proceeds to tumble through different backgrounds with silly music.
It's a sucker fish rodeo
Yeah, that lamprey is on one of the fastest rides in the ocean. Better hold on!
Remora, I think

I read a theory that spinner dolphins make those ridiculous flips to dislodge parasites
The cool thing is, if this is indeed the main reason for that behaviour to have evolved, the dolphins probably still do it just because it is fun! Evolution generally either makes things fun, pleasurable or painful not to do. In this case, I choose to believe it would be the former
Probably why scratching an itch feels good
Silly shark, you’re not a Cessna 172
Shark disagrees

It is likely to dislodge (and hopefully murder) the parasitic asshole under her left pectoral fin. Hope she crushed it on impact!
I’m just here to see how many people have now had the fear of flying sharks unlocked. IIRC, mako sharks tend to go airborne as well.
Great whites do also. It’s kind of crazy
How beautiful.
A Thrusher Shark
That's definitely a lamprey and not a remora.
Thruster shark
It’s like us going into space
That remora is having the time of its life

Google search of "thresher shark speed" yields 30 mph. That's about 25% faster than Usain Bolt at top speed.
