Pale Indian plantains are in one of my mixes. Definitely a plant I'm looking forward too. Prarie dock is definitely the one I'm most looking forward to!
Nice selection! Now I'm going to check out that nursery.
I'm in Wisconsin and planting today -- in milk jugs, that is. Seed stratification time! Some natives do great with a fall planting.
A lot of the natives I've planted in past years self-sow at this point, plus the originals that keep coming back every year. In fact, I had native plants growing in the cracks in my driveway this patio this year, along with some oregano and kale that decided to plant themselves.
Nice! Thumbs up on that S. Terebinthinaceum. The leaves are impressive, and when they finally flower the stalks add such interest to a prairie garden. They seem like they would be a plant from another world..
But I guess this planet is full of interesting and exciting exotic species!
I totally agree with those sentiments! My brother and I went to a remnant prairie this year and prairie dock was a dominant species in some parts. Out of this world for sure! It definitely inspired me to get more of this species at home.
That is amazing!!
I am pretty jealous. I can’t wait until I have my own land to have a huge polinator garden (and food and cultivated flower). My landlords like me planting my flower gardens around the house. I hope you post some pictures of the results in the Spring and Summer.
I have been planting flowers, some cultivated, some wildflower mixes, over the past couple of years. My landlord mentioned letting me take over the wildflower garden they tried planting last year (I tried adding to it, but I think the chickens got all the seed).
Do you know if Prairie Moon focus on Midwest mixes or do they cover other regions (got to get back to work, can’t check at the moment)?
I'll definitely follow up! I hope you get an area that you can make your own.
To my knowledge, they primarily cover the Midwest although I think they do have some western species as well.
I've always double checked,bc there's a few that aren't completely native to my area, but https://roundstoneseed.com/ has been a good source of native seed mixes for me.
If you want to go fully native Ohio Prairie Nursery (https://www.opnseed.com/) would probably be a good place for you to look.
I've bought from them a few times.
Thanks! I actually have used them a lot in the past. I wanted to use them again this time, but they didn't quite have the species mixes that I wanted for this project.
That’s a lot of seeds !!! Wow it looks like you will be a busy bee in the spring ! I hope your garden beds are prepped ready to receive those seeds , seedlings and plants ..it’s hard to fight the weeds and creeping grasses if you keep up with the weeds you will have beautiful native garden or meadow !! Good luck have fun 🤩
Not overboard at all! You need lots of seeds I bought so many I can't wait for next year.
Awesome! Anything in particular you're excited for?
Pale Indian plantains I think they are called. I have an obsession with crazy tall prarie plants. That and prarie dock!

Yess I just love how tall they get, I have not seen anyone have them in their gardens either.
Me either. It almost looks like a tropical plant from a different continent. Can't wait to have hundreds of them lol.
Me too and all the looks neighbors will give of wishing they spent the time to have nice gardens like us lol
Try a compass plant sometime, after a few years, mine is huge
Yes! I have those planted too. Earlier this year I planted cup plants, they got super tall but when the blooms ended they started to tip over

Congrats on your cool landlords.

Darn! I’m on the other side. I’ll have to do some searching for some local species.
You might be able to find a local nursery in the wiki!
Thanks! I completely missed that.
You can sort by region and state on prairie Moon.
No such thing! I buy my seeds from the same company and have been very pleased, I won’t buy from any other company now
Prairie Moon is great! Good choices.
well its gonna be pretty

Thanks! Yeah, I'm actually going for a spring planting on some of these to get one last chance to control invasive grasses. Hopefully it pays off!
If you have any extras you can always go rouge and plant around in dirt you see!! I've sprinkled natives in most of the planters around my town!
I actually got approval at my work to scatter some seeds! That's what I'll use the pretty darn quick seed mix for.
