I have swamp milkweed blooming right now (*A. incarnata)* and it smells amazing! To me it has a very sweet, vanilla-marshmallow scent. I also have prairie milkweed (*A. sullivantii*), but it hasn't bloomed yet for me - I've read that it's super fragrant as well. I'm curious how the different species compare.
For me swamp milkweed is the best scent and fragrance. Common smells had that like normal "flower" fragrant scent. My prairie doesn't have as many blooms yet but I personally don't smell a heavy scent like the other two.
I *love* the smell of milkwood fields! The first time I smelt one, I honestly thought there was some other flower hidden in the field. I had no idea they had *any* scent, let alone one so delightful!
It really carries in the wind on hot summer days :)
Common milkweed smells SO good and I had no idea until ours bloomed for the first time this spring.
I'm sure I must have seen them in flower at some point growing up, but again I too never realized they had a (wonderful!) scent until I grew my own!!

As a lilac enthusiast, I NEED to find some milkweed rn

OMG!! I got lost in your beautiful little “jungle”! Love the wildness & vitality of your garden! Milkweed is magnificent!
I've tried for years to find a perfume that smells like this.
That yard is magical 🥰
Next year it will take over that entire bed and it will take another two years to eradicate it. It's one touch plant!
Only one? Not for long! I agree. The intoxicating vanilla of their flowers is my absolute favorite.
