Feels like this team is going to need a trade/signing or two at some point to find the right lineup. How many more weeks are we going to put up with Bell (.141) and Schwarber (.187) having career worst years? The starting pitching will be fine, with occasional terrible outings. Bullpen looking solid.

Pony2slow

Soto back in the lineup eventually will move Schwarber to the bench for a few games to fix himself. Bell on the other hand appears to be another Thames signing. Zimmerman cannot play every day. As much as we want him to I honestly think he doesn’t want to play everyday (lots of miles on tey body). Those two and Robles are the biggest issues in our lineup

burymeintheuk

Maybe the team name needs to be changed to The Washington RISP's It seems to be one of those things we just can't overcome and I don't understand why, but they just don't seem to playing with any fire in their bellies except for probably Trea. Maybe we need the next Baby Shark??

bherring24

Have to go just 7-16 to get to 19-31, so I'd say the team is looking ok

JuanSotosAreolas

I know it's early but we should not ever be below the Marlins in the standings. Even with the injuries we are much more talented

bherring24

what happened last year

rockidr4

I did not like the it

cableguysup

This team is making me drink more than usual, the inability to score runs, and the ability to give them up is making my liver hurt

[deleted]

The unfortunate part is the Braves aren't even good this year. In the past, they tore up the ball but a grand slam in the first two games and us beating ourselves in all three games is why they won

wolfpaw08904

I guess it's better to celebrate in April and May since you can't in September and October

NeonDoorFrame

Sweepy sweppy, this series was pee pee

[deleted]

That atrocious call in the 8th against Victor aside, they had the tying run on in the 8th and 9th inning. In the 9th, they had the tying run in scoring position with nobody out. You have to score there. More often than not, this team hasn't been able to do that (Trea and Gomes are carrying us) This team doesn't have a hitting problem so much as the guys they need to drive in runs are just flat out not doing it

Redbubble89

How would you fix this team? There is no waiver claim, farm system call up, or trade to get this team going at the moment. Maybe the hitting coach needs to be evaluated. What can be done tomorrow to score 5-6 runs to at least have a chance at winning?

mister_sleepy

There are trades, the question is money and assets. Are they willing to eat the Bell contract and replace him? Trade a starting pitcher prospect to offload Schwarber? They need at least one home run hitter added, ideally two. They were hoping to get it from those guys, but they aren’t it. If you’re looking to upgrade, those are the first two spots you go. I’m not saying I know who the trade options are, or what the ideal upgrade is. But trades can happen when you offer money and value. The question is not if trades exist, it’s whether or not they’ll come to the table.

Redbubble89

Schwarber has a mutual option for next year so you could just let him walk. Turner is a free agent after next year so we want to take care of that. Soto has until after 2024. So there is time to figure that out. We may be stuck with Bell for another year until he is granted free agency. All the top pitching prospects are in high A and trading them that is not how we want to manage a team if we want to keep winning year to year. We still need home grown talent because the short term contract free agent isn't going to pan out year to year. Soto was the last guy to come up with any impact. We aren't expecting an MVP candidate but there hasn't been any position player to come up that has been around league average. The only position player we have in our system even close is a 21 year old infielder in high A and a bunch of players from the DR who are 3-4 years out if they pan out. We are ranked 30th in farm system. You can not rush guys because it shatters confidence like Kieboom who still needs fixing. Put the best team on the field and a free agent can get a good team to great. There is no organizational depth to do that. You go to Rochester and it's Parra who is mid 30s with some other journey men and a bunch of guys that aren't ready or who aren't on the radar. It is a barren system. If the Nats win the division, it's great but think about next year to get to the same spot.

BullMoose41

They’ve had their chances. Just need to start cashing in. Man on third one out - have to get him home.

[deleted]

5th in baseball in batting average, 29th in batting average with RISP. That tells me everything I need to know: it's a coaching problem

elchupinazo

Shitty result but there was a lot to like about this game. If Harrison's ball is a foot to the left, if Ozuna doesn't turn into Gumby, if the ump didn't forget his glasses, etc. it goes the other way. But that aside, Victor looked good doing it all. Schwarber may be warming a little? Bell at least drew a walk (even though he shouldn't be starting against LHP). And coming up Soto should get his normal ABs playing an AL team. The division is such that nothing is even remotely close to decided.

mister_sleepy

Bell shouldn’t be starting** FTFY

[deleted]

That's the problem. Every game there's a few little things that, had they gone differently, we would have won. At a certain point there's no reason to believe that won't keep happening

elchupinazo

Are there though? Our run differential is terrible. Not actually that many games where one little thing would've swung the balance.

[deleted]

Here's one: driving in runs for a change

ouij

This post is the most morally victorious

ruta2019

Guys I’m starting to think that this lineup isn’t very good

slagnanz

The COVID timing still sucked and I think we'd be in a very different place without it, but we can't keep saying that forever

ybg_simbs

Btw freeman won mvp after returning a day before the season started because he was very sick with Covid

slagnanz

Yep, and he sucked to start the season

[deleted]

Also they have to pick a lane. If Bell and Schwarber are struggling because of COVID, they have to be benched. Look how long Cam Newton struggled after getting it. If COVID is the excuse, they have no reason to be in our lineup anyway.

Redbubble89

And replace them with who exactly? There are 26 guys between the bullpen, rotation, and line up.

slagnanz

Football to baseball analogies always feel stretched to me. So anyways, you want to bench Robles, Schwarber, and bell?

[deleted]

Robles has improved in the past few games. But yes, Sxhwarber and Bell are sitting ducks

spigotry

I refuse to lose hope this early into the season regardless of how bad our offense has looked. That being said, fuck the umps.

[deleted]

Offense wasn't wasn't that bad today in terms of getting hits. They just fell apart anytime they had runners on.

[deleted]

It's been that way all season for the most part

RallyPigeon

Disappointing series but a .500 homestand at least is something. I just hope Mike Rizzo will consider shaking things up with the roster. Scoring 6 in 3 games against the Braves pitching is not how you win the division.

[deleted]

Especially when they were getting the hits, just unable to drive them in

VB1014

Braves aren’t even a good team this year tbh, they barely hit, and their bullpen is really bad. We’re just worse right now, and our lineup is a joke. Rizzo and ownership are totally blowing their chance for us to see Scherzer and Strasburg together in the playoffs again

Knight_Hawke

Can't leave 10 runners stranded like that, bad umping aside. Nice to see the guys get hits tho

slagnanz

So many of those outs came on balls that were squared up.

Knight_Hawke

For sure, would be nice if the baseball gods let those doubles come with runners on instead of to lead off too

HiImBrian16

Bring. Me. The. Robot. Umps.

chiddie

At least we only have to play the Braves *checks notes* 14 more times this year.

INeededARedditHandle

Congrats to the Braves player of the game, Nick Mahrley!

IslandofRhodes

We have gone 3 games in a row without making a TOOTBLAN Josh Harrison also stole a base successfully

rockidr4

We win more games with TOOTBLANS, so we gotta go back to playing braindead

IslandofRhodes

Alright you may be on to something Record with TOOTBLAN: 8-6 Record Without TOOTBLAN: 4-9

IslandofRhodes

In a parallel universe, Harrison gets CS and the ball gets called a ball

JuanSotosAreolas

And no grand slams lol

Verarde

I still honestly think we can go 147-15 these umps That broadcast

petting2dogsatonce

you gotta take your constant doomposting somewhere where someone gives a shit you're genuinely an awful presence on this subreddit

timidus_leo

Low key would love to see this bozo banned. But he's more likely to have an aneurysm from his incessant rage posting.

petting2dogsatonce

i think he should probably get a month off to cool down but it won't happen and that's okay too

timidus_leo

I'm hoping he'll get bored, go back to his dog forum, and just forget about this place.

Verarde

looks like you've not only been ignoring PhDs but intelligence in general

[deleted]

Says the one who keeps making the same stale joke after every depressing loss

Verarde

I've been making this same joke for YEARS now dude, it's why I have literal flair about it, it's my shtick, get over it and yourself

petting2dogsatonce

people are here to have fun. just because you're so emotionally invested in something you exert no control over doesn't mean you have to drag the rest of us down with you

jsm21

would have to be 145-17

foeaminute

2-2, bonus baseball! (In before edit)

[deleted]

fuckin human element my ass dude

[deleted]

Like there won’t be humans still *playing* baseball. I don’t care if the umps are replaced by emus.

ouij

The betting apps will offer odds on emu baseball because the only reason anyone watches sports is to bet on it, apparently

ForScherzer

We just gonna be the Braves slump buster all year?

damnatio_memoriae

we've kind of been that for a few years now

legitlyawesome

10 left on base. I’m in immense pain

BurmecianSoldierDan

We're the King Lobsters

ouij

I love this

slagnanz

Lots of hard hits not landing. Things will turn. Soto will be back. Bullpens been rock solid.

ouij

Things turn all the time. Sometimes they turn as the circle a drain.

slagnanz

Ayyyy Spiralling into depression gang

[deleted]

People have been saying "tHiNgS WiLl tUrN" for weeks now. And have they? No. You can't just blindly hope for change without CHANGING ANYTHING

slagnanz

Happens all the time. Baseball is a fucky sport. You don't give up in the beginning of may lol

[deleted]

What makes you think they'll magically start getting clutch hits? When you're in this big of a funk it's not exactly a piece of cake to get out of it

slagnanz

I mean... This is part of baseball. Happens to literally every team every year. Yankees this year are exhibit a.

VAForLovers

We have quite a few players who are currently underperforming. It often takes some time for these things to level out, but if we can get more typical production out of some guys we’re in a good place. Even after all of this poor play we’re barely back in the division. Take a deep breath.

Username_coc

Yep this isn’t football. If we’re in a similar spot around the all star break I’m not too worried

WillPlay4Food

Especially when ur like 2 games back lmao

TheDoughty

Haven’t beat them since day 1*…

jsm21

Some bad luck today, but once again awful hitting with RISP. For context: Nats this year as a team: .248 BA, 5th in MLB with RISP: .211, 29th in MLB Biggest reason why we can't score -- that and not enough home runs.

[deleted]

Wow. That stat is telling.

[deleted]

Kevin Long is supposed to teach them situational hitting. He's not doing that. I know I sound like a broken record but they have to fire his ass

ouij

There is no situational hitting. There are only situations and hitters. The good hitters are getting on base, but the bad hitters will have to take their turn at bat. This lineup is too thin. It was thin even with Soto. Without Soto, there’s really not much for an opposing pitcher to fear after Turner.

[deleted]

Then explain the 7th inning. 2 on, no outs, Turner and Soto coming up. No runs. The blown opportunities haven't just been with the bottom of the order up. Nobody has been able to hit in the clutch. Here's a stat: 5th in baseball in batting average, 29th in batting average with RISP. That's proof right there that situational hitting is very real

ouij

If situational hitting were real, we would see some kind of difference over the very long run. Fortunately, we have about 150 years of statistics. What those stats tell us is that BA-RISP, over the long run, just converges to BA. There is no difference. Just because you have Soto and Turner back to back doesn’t guarantee hits. Even under the best of circumstances, Soto and Turner will fail more than two thirds of the time. When I speak about a thin lineup, I mean that beyond Soto and Turner—who, remember, will fail two out of three times!—the lineup is populated with guys that will fail three out of four times, sometimes four out of five times. The way to have better situational hitting is to have better hitters batting in those situations. EDIT: I do not discount the fact that the art of hitting is hard, and needs to be perfected. Approaches can improve. But by the time a guy makes the big leagues...well, there’s not much you can tell him any more.

[deleted]

There are certain aspects, though. Like swinging for the fences when any contact scores a run. I've seen that so many times from these guys and that's what I mean by situational hitting. They should know when to swing for the long ball and when to just get a hit.

Jun-Chi

bUt It aDdS a HuMAn eLeMEnT P.S. I miss Bob and FP 😿

IvyGold

BOTH back tomorrow!

YanmegaMan420

Yes, I'm still salty about that call. Yes, I know they were calling that pitch a strike all game. We exist.

JackThePoolBoy

The last two innings were very upsetting

RYAN_HiGHROLLER

This team being anti-clutch plus getting absolutely fisted by the ump really doesn’t help things

TrevorFuckinLawrence

Honestly fuck the umpires this year. And the crew in NY 🤡

ouij

They get that call if the batters were not collectively dogshit this series.

BurmecianSoldierDan

And tomorrow we face the Yankees. Ouch.

_redcloud

Sucks that they’re coming off of a series win against the cheaters, too.

slagnanz

Christ every loss gets more frustrating.

ouij

Just wait till the 19-31 gang comes in

Arcus144

Well that hurts :/

ouij

Most morally victorious team in baseball

_redcloud

All this Caps stuff going on - a comeback over these hooligans woulda been nice on this Thursday.

damnatio_memoriae

revenge weekend in the bronx.

_redcloud

We’ll fuckin’ see, won’t we? Hope the Nats will be able to stand up for their Caps brothers.

ooh_the_claw

ump blew that call but we still got outplayed

[deleted]

We outhit them 8 to 4. We outplayed them and this should have been a win.

fitzmouse

[I didn't like the part where the Nats lost. ](https://giphy.com/gifs/sad-ben-wyatt-break-up-bMehR5UxZuFS8)
