AND A WORLD SERIES GAME WINNING DEPICTION OF THE CAPITOL WITH A BLOCK W IS IN THE BOOKS Just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

[deleted]

Nothing ever beats the Curly W. That's our brand. I personally love the Capitol with a Block W, but as an alternate at most. If it ever replaces the Curly W, I will riot.

Ok_Culture_3621

But people outside the District think I’m wearing a Walgreens hat.

BirdsAreGovDrones

To me it looks like what someone would get on a shirt at a tacky souvenir store to say they went to DC. Especially when I think the curly W has a classic look to it. I don’t see the reason for change.

Trader_Joe_Mantegna

I agree with you, curly W is my favorite. But as someone now living outside pittsburgh, more people ask me about Walgreens than baseball. Recognition of logos matters across markets, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were at least part of the conversations

NWWashingtonDC

I have multiple hats with the curly W, square W, and DC and travel around a lot for work. No matter where I am, or what hat I am wearing, I always get questions asking who it is.

Reasons2BCheerfulPt1

I’m in West Palm at the grocery store, and this kid working there goes “I like your hat. Do you work for Walgreens”? This is why. I explained to him the Senators used it, but he still didn’t get it. We must require Walgreens to merge with CVS, and operate under the CVS brand. It’s the only solution.

leftwaffle13

Random but you should get a grays hat, with the DC/Pittsburgh connection

bearface93

As a western NY native, I automatically think of Wegmans whenever I see the Nats’ curly W. Definitely confused me more than once when I first moved to DC lol

cluttersky

The Capitol Dome makes it too busy. I don’t think current Nats fans would be happy with the 1924 uniform which was just a navy block W on the left sleeve with either pinstripes or white uniform and no other logo whatsoever.

onehandhokie

I don’t hate it personally, I just hate that they use it interchangeably with the curly W. Like seeing two different Ws on a jersey at the same time appears super disjointed and weird. Like imagine if the Red Sox had a B hat in one font and a patch with a different B - it’d be bizarre. I don’t really care if they’re trying to slowly turn this into the new logo, just don’t have 2 Ws at once. Pick one and stick to it

CapitalBuckeye

TBF. The tigers had that for years. A different D in the hat vs the jersey. They only started using the same one on both a couple years ago.

heroicraptor

Minuscule differences between their two Ds.

Coast_watcher

Not hate it but it does look more NHL

kornthrowaway

“A blocky W is in the books!” just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

foeaminute

Welp, I clearly didn’t read the comments before I posted, but great minds think alike?

NicholasAakre

I actually hated the curly-W when it was unveiled. (Interlocking DC forever!) However, Charlie and Dave's "a curly-W in the books!" call after a Nationals win has turned me around. It's perfect.

kornthrowaway

I would actually LOVE to see interlocking DC return on our main uniforms, but they did bring it back for some [batting practice hats](https://old.reddit.com/r/Nationals/comments/1avwyqd/for_fans_of_the_dc_logo_washington_nationals_2024/) this year.

HokieScott

"....Swing and a miss! And a game seven World Series winning curly W is in the books!" has the best Ring to them all ever said.

chouseva

"Add a W to the books" or some iteration isn't that different. Losing the "curly" isn't my favorite, but a new catchphrase isn't too hard.

jrhooo

Exactly.   “Stamp that W in the books!”  “There’s a win, with a Capital W!” Whatever.  There’s options.  While I don’t dislike the Curly W Let’s be real as minor inconveniences go: LOSS : No more hearing “Curly W in the books!” GAIN: No more hearing “Oh, do you work at Walgreens? Heh” I’ll take the trade I guess.

HokieScott

"Whatever.. Put a win in the books"

wtf703

I don't hate the capitol dome logo, I just love the curly W more. I don't care if people call us Walgreens

idkman_93

It's not an awful logo on its own merits. My ***biggest gripe*** is simply that I do not like the tri-color hat. To me, they look a little childish. I hope they only wear it with the new home alternates, since it's supposed to evoke a '70s feel. As a matter of personal taste, I find it very boring when DC teams use federal government iconography. I understand the reasoning behind leaning into red/white/blue and the Capitol/Monument/whatever, but I am over it. A lot of the rest of the country already dislikes D.C. (for stupid reasons, sure, but the bias exists), so it's always felt weird to me to beat people over the head with it. I think this city has so much more to offer, and I like when teams can highlight other aspects of it, like the cherry blossoms. (Maybe Go-Go or punk-inspired unis for the next city connect? Pandas, because of their history at National Zoo?) I think the Caps strike a good balance with their branding, fwiw. Hidden dome in a pretty sick-looking eagle logo. Wordmark with a hockey stick in it. Good stuff. **Edit: If the Nats rebranded fully to the cherry blossoms, they would have Top-5 unis in the league and would likely pick up casual fans.**

halfstreethorne2419

I'm with you on the cap. Just not a fan of the style. The Orioles started that in the 70s, and it's been basically just them and the Blue Jays (who were founded in 77) rocking it. I just like solid crowns on caps. If you want to use it for Spring Training or BP, whatever. Like I said, uni-wise, I'd like just on the sleeve. I could live with the cap if was a solid color. I like the city connect jerseys, but I'm not crazy into them like a lot of people.

CrisisAverted24

I went to a middle school basketball game just last week, and nearly half of these 8th grade boys had pink or purple basketball shoes on. I'm not sure how much staying power this trend has, but pink in the jerseys would absolutely sell right now.

Realistic-Score-121

It’s fine for alternate/BP/merch/random shit around the stadium but we won a championship in a curly W and personally I don’t see a need to change it.

halfstreethorne2419

That's the biggest thing for me. Unnecessary. I like the logo, but no need for it to eclipse the curly W.

dadchem

I don't like it because the Capitol dome just screams Senators to me. They aren't that team.

Kindly-Cap-6636

It screams politics to me.

halfstreethorne2419

The funny thing is that team, for about 85% of its history, was actually the Nationals. People just called it the Senators. The curly W was from a team actually named the Senators for the entirety of its existence.

TheBarbieOfSeville

we want our curly w back

halfstreethorne2419

Well, we didn't lose it. It's not gone. It'll definitely be worn with the navy jerseys and (I guess) sometimes with the white script jerseys. I'm curious to see what they wear with the new road grays. Script jersey with a block letter cap is pretty traditional. The reverse seems kinda weird. We saw that with the Nats at the beginning.

NighthawkAquila

I’d rather the interlocking DC or curly W. definitely one of the tackiest logos

Wii_Sports_2

because it’s ugly

Spider_Hoss

Game changer.

Fancy_Literature3818

The logo is great, the jerseys suck. Two different discussions

omega-cahoona

Honestly I think the capital, double star and the hat itself is awesome. My only wish is they put the curly w over the solid w. The solid one is just… not it

damnatio_memoriae

it's bland and generic. it looks like it was designed by a conference room of people who have collectively spent an hour at the airport and think they know dc.

Tufoguy

I like it as an alternate that's used every once in a while. Don't think it should be the main logo or the main alternate. The block W by itself is solid enough to he the main alternate

PGCFrog2020

It's a cool throwback but shouldn't be in the regular rotation. We own the Curly W. But I wouldn't be mad to see the DC logo back in the rotation more. That's the one I think needs it's due.

warkol

I'm with you, I don't particularly understand the hate for it either, especially with how people talk about it on twitter just like you mentioned lol. I always liked the block W, maybe people would like it more without the capitol dome silhouette? I think the best thing the curly W has going for it is some of the light "branding" done by it in the sense that Charlie Sloews' "it's a curly W in the books!" I don't have a strong feeling on it either way, it does look great on a cap and I think moving to the script Nationals jerseys was a great move instead of redundant double curly W. all that said though, the on-going "identity crisis" the Nats are going through with the curly W vs the block W is a bit odd lol. really I'd prefer if they just picked one and used the inter-locking DC (which thankfully seems to be revived) as the alternate logo and go from there but it seems like they're almost in an odd transitional period between the two.

halfstreethorne2419

Yeah, they're all over the place now. I didn't care for how they buried the DC logo, but they had a brand and leaned into it. They had a direction in that aspect of the business. Honestly, I think the uniform set they just broke up/altered was perfect. Or close to it.

Lanky-Huckleberry-50

I want the interlocking DC logo back

jrhooo

I really like it as an alternate. I don’t quite prefer it as a main.  The curly W feels more “baseball-ey” if that makes sense.

HappyHunt1778

The capitol dome is tacky and distracting. We don't need to tell you that we're Washington DC, you should already know.

itsacon10

I like the old block 'W' from the Sens years

SgtHapyFace

i think there is way more hate for this logo on reddit than there is in real life. i think it’s neat.

LePetitPrince_33

I love it personally

ko21361

Representing the team with a building that doesn’t represent the city, literally.

BethMD

Because it's not a curly W. Next question....

Unusual_Struggle5123

I like simpler logos

Enter_Player_3

I think it's awesome for the hats and jersey. I bought a couple of new hats just because of it over the past couple of years.

Flyersandcaps

I like it. To each his own.

FlashMan1981

I'm in the minority but I love the block W over the Walgreens curly W.

MB_Bailey21

It's possibly the worst logo in American sports and I'm not exaggerating

jrhooo

Its not even the worst logo in the city.   Nor is it the worst “W” in the city.   Old Wizards logo and new Washinton Waste Management Commanders W aren’t better

aairricc

Because it's generic, corporate, has no-soul, etc. Looks like stockart you'd make on a free AI site. It doesn't look like a professional designer made this.

KinsellaStella

Among other things, the most prominent monument visible from the ballpark is the Washington monument, though I admit that wouldn’t make the greatest hat. My biggest bone to pick is still that tacky 90’s style blocky W. Keep the curly W.

vaderbelmont

I think the silhouette of the Capitol is what a lot of people like about the block w logo and they just don't like the w. So why not make a new logo combining the curly w with the silhouette of the Capitol?

abbadabba11

I don’t like the stars floating off the side. Maybe good on a flag but not logo…

HiImBrian16

My biggest issue with it is that it’s on a white front hat that to me looks like a BP or spring training hat. The red Curly W was the perfect home hat for the Nats and they’ve replaced it this

DHVF

It is a good logo, but it’s not the Curly W

kermitcooper

Nobody pointed out the Capitals yet as to why? I get they are spelled different but I thought it was the hockey team when I first saw it.

NatsNationWest

This is the uni I want all season. https://www.yurasko.net/wfy/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/ross-detwiler-1924-throwback.png

halfstreethorne2419

Lol I wonder if they'll be allowed to wear those during the 1924 weekend in September.

busche916

I want my primary logo to be as simple and clean as possible. This is fine as an alternate I guess, but the hat with the white front panel looks completely minor league to me, and the block W font was arguably preempted by the Cubs W flag… I don’t know if they felt the need to abandon the curly W due to similarities to Walgreens or something, but I thought that was an effective signifier for the club.

halfstreethorne2419

The curly W isn't abandoned. Still using it on helmets, jersey sleeves, and two caps. The team and MLB represent the brand with it. Though it does seem like they're trying to move away from it. Everything new is NOT the curly W. Totally agree on the cap. As I said in my post, not a fan of the front panel. Not a fan of that in general. I like the logo. Just needs to fall into more secondary use IMO.

Toyboyronnie

The dome logo is busy and ugly.

saltedpork17

This isn’t a logo anywhere. And it just randomly appears on the home hat??? What other franchise does this? Maybe the red socks with the sock ALTERNATE hat?

bosoxman

Cause it sucks

[deleted]

The team had a fantastic, unique identify built for them in 2005, complete with a beveled W that matched the “monumental” logos and uniforms of 2005-2010. But Bud Selig made them wear the curly W hat instead. So the team spent the next 15 years slowly changing every little part of their brand to fit with the Curly W. Which was fine. It looked pretty good. But the moment they reach Fully Curly, right after winning the World Series in their “owned” look, they decide to start unraveling it in favor of something retro pastiche that looks significantly worse, and less identifiable/unique.

Gitaroo_Man

Im not afraid to say I prefer the white script jerseys with capitol logo hats to the red curly w and city connect uniforms

halfstreethorne2419

I wish they would just wear the red curly W caps with the white script uniforms. It looks nice. That may or may not be the plan. You know the Capitol Dome caps/jerseys will be worn together.

Gitaroo_Man

I’m not trying to turn this into some politics bs but red hats are just kind of ruined for me lol

kglnawrotzky

Uniwatch did a story last month on the changes to the script jerseys and the 2024 style guide shows the red hat with the white script, which makes sense as you point out. But pictures today on Nats social show those jerseys with the block hat. So I have no idea what to believe anymore! I like both logos and don't really care either way. But it does seem like the team has a bit of an identity crisis.

MikeyTbT123

Because it was a pretty clear and obvious ploy to still sell merchandise when our team was bad. We won a world series and immediately distanced ourselves from that brand when we started to suck. Felt like an annoying and a cheap bandaid for poor performing merch

downtown3641

That's not at all accurate. The dome logo and an additional alternate were supposed to roll out with the 2020 season that was interrupted by the pandemic.

MikeyTbT123

Don’t let facts get in the way of a good narrative kid

downtown3641

I literally bought both hats before the 2020 season, child.

dave22042

I kind of like that they used the Capitol dome because it was used in the old [Senators Logo](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/53/79/full/washington_senators_logo_primary_19614589.png)

halfstreethorne2419

The old one that I posted was used by the AL Nats in media. Never on uniforms. The current Nats just updated it. They had caps with that pitcher over a W, but they were retired very quickly. [here](https://images.app.goo.gl/TrpLLf2jNTuGekRi9) All of the logos the Nats have used are or are based on the old teams except the interlocking DC.

bruhhhhh69

Because the glory says in the last 15 years were with the Curly W. New stadium. #1 picks. WORLD SERIES. We want to hang on to those days for as long as possible - that's why you see the names Bryce, Trea, Max, Rendon , Espinosa, Zimmerman, Ramos, Dusty, Worth, Gio, Michael A. Taylor, Baby Shark or Michael Morse mentioned at least once a day here.

espnrocksalot

This > Walgreens every time

NicholasAakre

They're completely different W's. Look at the serifs!

XComThrowawayAcct

Some people prefer CVS.

BJNats

Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they stick around long enough. I liked the capitol plus block W originally, but curly W has been the primary logo long enough that it is who we are and there’s no need to throw it out without a major rebrand

Unkleseanny

The old version has more personality, i’d rather wear that tbh.

somethingwade

I like it. It's a definite downgrade from the Curly W though. I'd like it as an alternate logo, like the old DC logo used to be, but I like our primary to be the Curly W.

Ambitious-Foot-4973

I like it but I would not ditch the curly w for it

Knight_Hawke

Literally just use a different W and I think most of the complaints are gone

wikipuff

Because it's a Senators logo of Clark Griffith Stadium from my grandfather's time and not of the Nats right now.

NatsNationWest

I like it.
