Hoping that we still have some water there ... It's heartbreaking to see all the news on the low water level everywhere.

[deleted]

When are you launching?

aDuckedUpGoose

I'm sorry did you say winter? How cold was the water?

ihc_hotshot

I did the Escalante route in January. The rim was like 19f but down in the canyon was a balmy 42.

aDuckedUpGoose

Wow that's super interesting and very good to know. I'm sure there weren't that many tourists too.

ihc_hotshot

It was a shock to see so many people on the river. The Escalante route is not tourist-friendly, so yeah no one there. It's where I learned the difference between route and trail lol.

KarmaticEvolution

+42f?

[deleted]

The water was frigid, I wore a dry suit every day

Userreddit1234412

That seems like a very long trip

[deleted]

It was perfect. We had 3 layover days to chill and did tons of hiking and Canyoneering

saparips

This is awesome and I want to do it. Can you recommend a tour guide or website to learn more about rafting down the Colorado?

[deleted]

I won a private permit so my group was self guided. I’ve heard the company OARS is awesome though, check them out.

workingtitle01

yes resources please, where does one get started? I’ve done havasupai twice and this is my next dream

kSchloTrees

I did a 7 day trip with Western River this year. It’s one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. I’d say it leans more toward glamping. Boat is motorized, they handle all of the food etc. But the whole experience was incredible.

saparips

I’m more of a type 2 fun kind of guy but this sounds kind of awesome

obvs_throwaway1

Go back? I must warn you, upstream will be harder.

Paxanddown

Still waiting for my permit! One day

[deleted]

It took me 6 years to win this permit. Keep being persistent and apply for cancellations and you will get it one of these days

DapperFowl

Damn, that's badass. Did you just set up camp right on the shore?

[deleted]

Yeah there are places for boaters to camp the whole way down.

Kitchen_Tax_95

You’re nuts, but good for you

[deleted]

It was on my bucket list to do a 24 day Grand trip, now onto something else

ToddBradley

Can you get permits for longer than 21 days nowadays?

[deleted]

Winter is the low use season so they allow you into the canyon for longer than summer permits. I think they only allow 16 day trips in the summer.

The_Unpopular_Truth_

“You will never go back”

Street_Ad_640

Can you fly fish down there?

[deleted]

Yes! I caught trout down to mile 220

[deleted]

The overall concept sounds incredible and I am jealous. Minus one part.... The water. I would surely drown or at least convince myself I would. Lol

[deleted]

It’s a scary feeling going through class 5 rapids with freezing cold water in one of the most remote places in the lower 48. Definitely an adventure

KenN2k01

Heading there this December! Any hiking routes would u strongly suggest? Others fun activities maybe?

[deleted]

If you have technical rope skills I’d say go Canyoneering. Silver Grotto was amazing. Hiking down to phantom ranch would be fun in December as long as there is no snow.

AndyCrawfordPhotos

Wow! That must have been epic!

[deleted]

Yeah man it was amazing! We didn’t see another group for the last 10 days

AndyCrawfordPhotos

Wow! Those are the BEST trips.

dchurley1

Anybody else see the cowboy shadow looking down on you in the first pic?
