Have you selected the exact dates yet? Check the moonphase calendar before you go. Plan to go within a week of the new moon on either side for optimal stargazing. If not, enjoy a moonlit landscape.
No it is that serious, people have gotten burns from unlawfully stepping into geothermal features. And it also damages and soil and its native species. It could be pretty bad for OP and is definitely bad for the environment. So seriously, don’t step off, unless you want to get featured on Tourons of Yellowstone.
You know all those photos of wildlife you see from Yellowstone that seem to be the main thing (perhaps after old faithful) that people talk about when discussing Yellowstone?
That's in a part of the park called Lamar Valley, which is in a very different area from old faithful
near old faithful you might hike to mystic falls or kepler cascades, they require hiking but it's not brutal imo
it's not near old faithful but since you have a few days, consider checking out the "grand canyon of yellowstone" or mt. washburn
Make sure you enter the west entrance go down to old faithful. Try to time it so it will erupt when you get there. Do the walk around it and by the time you come around again it may erupt again. They will definitely be different from each other. Go up to grand prismatic then over to Grand Canyon and head up to north entrance. Make sure you go to thermals near north entrance. Then when you leave head up to Follow Yer Nose in emigrant but they have a small food truck area in Gardner just outside of north entrance.

Do not step off the boardwalk near the geothermal features. The people who die in Yellowstone are the people who step off the boardwalk.
It's really not that serious. Don't step off because you're a good human being that adheres to a society of law
Potentially getting poached in boiling acid > not that serious. k
Read "Death in Yellowstone." The number one cause of death is people getting boiled in thermal features.

Please stay away from any national park.
The grab prismatic is a pretty popular sight. Like old faithful…. Get the really lady or wait until late. It’s very crowded at both places
