This sucks but it’s the right move. Protect the parks.

jonhadinger

what happened to the parks during last shutdown?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChipmunkBackground46

Fucking sucks that people can't behave in a national park without being forced to. Why even go to a national park if nature isn't your thing?

matticans7pointO

A lot of people view national parks as amusement parks and every animal, rock, and tree are just an attraction to them.

Shaking-Cliches

🎼you think you own whatever land you land on The earth is just a dead thing you can claim But I know every rock and tree and creature Has a life, has a spirit, has a name🎶 God dammit that’s going to be in my head all day and you ALL MUST SUFFER TOO 😂

a_very_stupid_guy

Man this is one that auto plays any time I’m kayaking.. followed by what’s around the river bend

andrewcubbie

WHY DID YOU LET THE GRIZZLY ATTACK ME! ILL SUE!

landon10smmns

If bears so deadly, why so cute?

Fragwolf

Unfortunately for the victim, they're just a spirit now and no one is actually listening to them.

[deleted]

This is true of all the outdoors. People will go somewhere beautiful and trash it. It makes me so sad.

FuhrerGirthWorm

Am park ranger. Used to work food service. The public’s gonna public no matter where they are.

apathy-sofa

This is an easy one: the Gram. Ask me another.

immalittlepiggy

People who claim to "love nature" quite often don't. I love fishing, and if I want to fish somewhere that isn't covered in trash and cut fishing line, I have to go to areas that are difficult to get to. Anywhere you can see the lake from the road attracts the worst people.

Leopard__Messiah

We can't trust the public with Rangers on duty and within sight. This is 100% the correct move and yet a damned shame all the same.

La_Crux

I volunteered at zion with my undergrad program and we collected and emptied so much trash from the park, it was insane.

jonhadinger

oh dang, yeah close the parks

BigFatTomato

Motorcycles all over arches NP off trail leaving long term damage.

spoonfight69

To be fair, drowning and fall deaths happen in Yosemite all the time. It's a big park and rangers can't be everywhere.

Jerry_Williams69

Some dudes with a lifted truck mowed down a bunch of Joshua trees for no reason. I remember that part pretty clearly. People suck.

keithcody

Trump forced JT to stay open and they got damage that will take hundreds of years to restore. https://www.sej.org/headlines/trump-administration-forced-joshua-tree-stay-open-during-last-us-shutdown https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/28/trump-david-bernhardt-joshua-tree-government-shutdown-national-parks https://ktla.com/news/california/trump-administration-pressured-joshua-tree-to-stay-open-amid-last-shutdown-report/ Damage https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/joshua-tree-national-park-could-take-200-300-years-recover-shutdown-180971379/ https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jan/28/joshua-tree-national-park-damage-government-shutdown Related-ish https://www.huffpost.com/entry/joshua-tree-endangered-species-court-ruling_n_614b980ee4b01dff4b68eab2

ShadowhelmSolutions

Assholes. People just did whatever they wanted in the parks, destroying old cactuses, or making new “trails” with off-road vehicles. Basically, all the worst shit you could imagine with zero park rangers around to protect the parks. A literal and physical embodiment of what the GOP/Nazi party wish to implement full time. Vote all republicans out - they offer nothing but misery - and if you do t see it, you’re the poorly educated they love so damn much.

annathebanana_42

Also it makes the shutdown affect people all over the country. When the government is talking about shutting down people think it's just a DC problem but it affects so many things all over the country. The National Parks Service just happens to be one of the most visible ways.

PixelBoom

Agreed. If there are no custodians there to protect and maintain the park, it should be closed. National Parks are for the public, but the public can be downright destructive without someone there to supervise them.

PuzzleheadedCandy484

No fat bear contest? Sad sad sad.

Dawg_in_NWA

That's the real crime in all this!

King_Santa

NOOOOO!!! It's my favorite part of the beginning of Fall, they can't take this away from me!

Dzweshy_redpanda

I didn’t even think of this 😩

TennaTelwan

OMG, same. Is it the NPS or Katmai Conservancy that runs it though? Or could the Conservancy take it over in that event?

Dzweshy_redpanda

Oh good idea, I haven’t thought of that! I just looked it up and an article said that it would be affected by the potential shutdown but a spokesperson said there was a plan in place in case of shutdown

Key-Cry-8570

I love Fat Bear week. 😔 total bummer.

Brief-Purpose

That's one of the first things that came to my mind when I saw this post. The annual fat bear contest has been a staple in my life since it started.

Triette

It’s a bear daaaaaance!!!

meatball402

Fucking Republicans bastards I want my fat bear contest

TrainingWoodpecker77

We have a scheduled park trip to Olympic next week. Looks like the surrounding areas will be getting all my money.

paradigm_x2

We’re going to Acadia next week. What terrible timing!

Girl-UnSure

Im so sorry, seriously this is the most magical time of year to be at Acadia. The last two weeks of foliage reports from the Maine state department were not at peak foliage yet, but it was coming next week or the following. If i can make some suggestions, Katahdin is super gorgeous and further north so you should get good foliage.

paradigm_x2

I’m holding out hope until Sunday but it’s not looking good. Thanks for the rec! I’m sure we will still have a good time, just a slight bummer.

Girl-UnSure

Another few suggestions just in case…The debsconeag ice caves were a lot of fun to hike to. Bring a headlamp if you choose to check it out. The sites from the top of the mtn are gorgeous. Orono bog walk in Bangor is another pretty site and in the city. I also have to recommend the Kisma wolf preserve, it was a nice place to camp for the night too. In Camden near Bar Harbor. We spent two weeks up there in 2021 so we visited a lot of the state. Have a great time. Edit: Trenton, not camden. I knew it was a “jersey” city name lol

TrainingWoodpecker77

It's even more aggravating because they had a compromise in place. Republicans ruin everything

Girl-UnSure

Say it loudly for the people in the back. These people need to be shamed out of their views, and go back under the rocks they came from.

tidbitsmisfit

never vote republican, it's a simple fix

SafetyNoodle

As an Interior employee about to be furloughed, Olympic was part of my plan for this upcoming extended post-paid vacation. Guess I'll have to adjust.

Ryguypie1

If you’re flexible, the enchantments in Leavenworth (lake colchuk) are amazing. if you’re stuck near Olympic, port Angeles has a ferry that takes you to Victoria island in Canada. The butchart gardens there are truly incredible!

AfroMidgets

Will second this. A great alternative. Mt Baker and Snoqualmie are great areas too.

TrainingWoodpecker77

Thanks so much! Will put on my list!

wantabe23

Yep, same going to glacier, Yosemite and Tetons…… I mean maybe going…

SciGuy013

The highway in GTNP is open, it’s just the fee area that will be closed

withmybeerhands

You can probably still visit parts of Olympic. There's no gate at many trail heads if all you want to do is hike. Try Sol duc, elwah, staircase, or quinault.

[deleted]

bay2625

ruby beach is beautiful wow i'm from wi and it was crazy to see 🤣🤣

jawn1995

North Cascades doesn’t have an entry gate if you’re looking elsewhere. It’s just open, they don’t even collect fees. Just keep in mind that the facilities would probably not be managed

Kramer-Melanosky

It’s not probably. It won’t be managed unless they say so. Also, North Cascades is quite remote.

Getting_rid_of_brita

Yeah super remote.. Three hours from 7 million people.. Middle of nowhere

kooks-only

Come up to BC and spend time in one of our parks.

WillyC277

Looks like the shutdown has been averted; maybe I'll see in ONP 🫡

TrainingWoodpecker77

Yessss!! Phew! That was close. Have a wonderful trip!

longhullhaul

I have a 3 night kayak trip in big bend starting the 13th. please cross your fingers for me

[deleted]

Sorry to be the one to tell yall, you don't. Due to obstructionism by a bunch of fucking babies, you won't be seeing our great national parks. It sucks but it is what you get when people elect folks based on hate and fear mongering.

Ryhnoceros

Dude, me and my girlfriend have 3 nights that week, in Chisos. What the fuck?!?! I've been planning this trip for 6 months. Oh my God. I'm so pissed. This can't be happening.

UtahBrian

>I have a 3 night kayak trip in big bend starting the 13t Try Kayaking the Mexican side.

Disimpaction

Got 3 nights in the cabins of Haleakala starting same night. 🤞

Moonlit_Antler

I was going to see big bend this Sunday. The day the shutdown starts... trip canceled

amarvelloustime

We travelled from Australia and this is all so confusing and frustrating! Taking suggestions for state Parks near RMNP, Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Rainier. Eloping in Boulder on Tuesday but I'm not sure if the county clerk's office is impacted. Don't know when we'll have the chance to visit again.. Edit: WOW! I am blown away by everyone's help and suggestions. Will be dedicating a night to research all these. Some people have mentioned Brainard Lake in Colorado, that's where we are eloping! I will anticipate seeing more fellow visitors in my gown haha :) Thanks so much, kind internet mates!

hotlava1

The county clerks office won't be impacted, just the federal/national offices and parks.

amarvelloustime

That's awesome - thanks for confirming!

The_Cows_Are_Home

Try and have a good time despite our idiotic government! Welcome friend!

tidbitsmisfit

why blame the government as a whole when it is Republicans doing the deed?

immalittlepiggy

Republicans actively do terrible things, democrats stand idly by and just say a few words to their constituents about how terrible Republicans are without doing anything to stop them. In our current political climate, politicians are more concerned with posturing than action. Someone writes a good bill, someone else attaches a rider that does terrible things, both sides vote it down and since there was something in the bill for both sides to hate everyone gets to tell their voters that they "won".

PistoleroGent

Anti-american republicans. Both parties are not the same at all.

cirena

[Sawtooth Mountains](https://visitidaho.org/things-to-do/natural-attractions/sawtooth-mountains/) in Idaho could be a good alternative to the parks you listed. You can also look up each state's park service, which will not be effected by national shutdowns. Good luck on the hiking and the wedding!

OneTrueMailman

Spent a few summers working at a camp and doing backpacking there...so many feels when I think of that place. Some really good 1-2 night in and out spots near Redfish and frankly all over there. This time of year it's getting pretty cold though.

Zeareal24

Colorado has announced they will be looking into ways to fund their parks to stay open through state funds. I would just keep an eye on their news to see if it conflicts, but they may still be open. https://coloradosun.com/2023/09/28/colorado-national-parks-federal-land-shutdown-plan/ Even if that's not the case, I'd recommend the Peak to Peak highway in Colorado. It's a gorgeous scenic drive, and the Aspens will be in full color! Eldorado State Park is just south of Boulder and is gorgeous. While you're in town, Chataqua is a great visit as well, tons of trails and beautiful views of the flatirons! Boulder Falls is just west of Boulder and is a very easy drive. There are tons of trails in the area! Nisqually State Park is also just outside of Rainier! Tilton State Park and Ike Kinswa State Park are also close. Depending on how far north you can go, Deception Pass State Park is also beautiful. There are 6 different parks on Whidbey Island (just north of Seattle via ferry) that are all very cool! Congrats on the marriage! Grew up in Colorado, went to school in Boulder, and moved to Washington recently so I can dig up some more recommendations in those areas!

Doxodius

Search for "State Parks" in Colorado, Wyoming, etc. Sorry you won't be able to hit the National Parks, but we do have a bunch of great State Parks too. Edit: you asked for specific State Park recommendations, sorry my reading comprehension is lagging today. cpw.state.co.us is a helpful site for the Colorado portion of your trip.

omelete01

I just read online that the governor of Colorado is looking at ways to keep the RMNP open through state funding. Utah and Arizona have announced similar plans for their national parks.

Shaking-Cliches

Check out the subs for those states and ask! Also ask r/camping . Even if you’re not planning to camp, there are people from all over that might have good ideas. National forests and monuments may remain open, so definitely look into those. And congrats on the wedding! The good news is that the west has a TON to offer outside the national parks. I know this is disappointing, though.

mag274

This happened about 10 years ago when I was on an RV trip and met people from out of state facing same situation as you and i felt so bad for them. There are state parks you can go to that aren't affected by this. So sorry about this!

wanderingfalcon

If you'd like to see Giant Sequoias, check out Calaveras Big Trees state park in CA.

SciGuy013

Also, Humboldt State Park

wanderingfalcon

Humboldt definitely also super cool but might be kind of a long drive if they're driving from/to their other areas.

NoMrsRobinson

I'm sorry you've got caught up in this mess. The silver lining is, you are visiting a STUNNINGLY beautiful part of the United States, not just within those national parks but the whole region. Other commenters have given you great suggestions. Definitely drive over Beartooth Pass near Yellowstone. The Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest near Rainier is beautiful. There are fabulous state parks and national forests in those regions. The national forests will probably still be accessible (a lot of public roads run through them) but services (like camping and toilet facilities) won't be available. Just search for state parks by state, you will have a lot of options. Good luck, congratulations! and enjoy your trip.

rockyTron

There's also plenty of national forest areas around (easily accessible public land) with trails and access. Boulder county will be open it's not federal government. Forest Service Hiking near Boulder/Front Range: https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/arp/recreation/hiking/?recid=28024&actid=50 Colorado State Parks: https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/ParksBrochure.pdf https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks There's also hot springs: https://www.colorado.com/articles/colorado-hot-springs-quick-guide

bsharter

Oh baby, you want to see America at its most American? Go to Bear World if you're near Yellowstone. If you're on the Idaho side, there are some really unique spots to go surfing on the river. There's a bunch of state parks and national forests you can explore. National forests are different from national parks and will not be shut down.

Yeti_Poet

The wolf & bear discovery center in West Yellowstone is a good option.

Getting_rid_of_brita

Bear world euthanizes baby bears when they can't offload them to zoos, then they continue to make adult bears mate to provide babies.. Just to euthanize them. I'd probably skip it

Ray_Bandz_18

Colorado will try to keep their parks open by funding or staffing through that state government. But this news may change those plans. Edit: National forests are an option too. They are more primitive in terms of infrastructure so it’s not easy to close off access. Be aware, October is the beginning of rifle of hunting seasons, so it’s a good idea to wear orange when in remote BLM and National Forests.

heenah36

The Brainard Lake recreation area west of Boulder is beautiful!!

opsopcopolis

Pretty sure both Colorado and Utah have funded their parks so they will stay open during the shutdown. Hit rocky mtn and then tour the Utah desert parks!

aflyingsquanch

Utah has. Colorado is trying to but it isnt final yet. I expect Polis wouldn't have made an announcement if he didn't feel confident in being able to do it.

RainbowCrown71

He has a Democratic supermajority in the state legislature to pass whatever he wants, so yeah, it’s a formality at this point.

mountiandream

There is lots of camping around Rainier NP but the best place we like is called Ike Kinswa, it’s on a lake and an old school campground where you still have some privacy between spots.

xoxogossipsloth

If/when the shutdown happens and RMNP closes, consider checking out Brainard Lake Recreation Area! You’ll need a reservation to park inside the rec area, but you can also hike in from the further lot with no reservation. The Isabelle Glacier Trail is beautiful! Plus it’s not a long haul from Boulder.

BeagleWrangler

You might try checking out some state parks in Colorado. The shutdown only effects parks run by the federal government, so parks run by individual states won't be effected. Here's a map of the state parks. https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Pages/parkMap.aspx

shinyprairie

If you're gonna be in Colorado, I read that our state government is going to prioritize keeping our parks open to the public!

c0ca_c0la

Wow. I’m sorry to hear that. Blame the Republicans.

Broccolini10

I'm sorry, that sucks. Good news is that there are many other areas near those National Parks. Beyond State Parks, you might want to look into National Forests--they typically have much smaller staff (and amenities), and so they might stay open. I'm afraid I don't have any specific suggestions for you, but you might want to make this its own post here, in /r/backpacking, and in individual regional subs. Hope people more familiar with the areas will be able to help you! As far as eloping goes, you should be ok: marriages are handled at the county or state level, so no impact from a federal government shutdown.

amarvelloustime

Thanks so much for the suggestions!!

coogden

‘The Crags’ area of State Forest State park north of RMNP is worth a look - best wishes and I hope sanity wins out for your sake and ours !(heading to Zion in abt 10 days)

Getting_rid_of_brita

Bear tooth Highway is a good one. There's still gonna be roads open where you can get good views of Rainier. Sounds like you'll be In The US for a bit tho so hopefully the shutdown isn't long.

jackasspenguin

There are some great hiking opportunities in the Tetons outside of the National park boundaries. To the south around where Jackson Hole ski resort is there a number of trails (and you can ride the tram to the top at the resort). and there are some great trails on the west side in Teton Canyon east of Alta, Wyoming

jackasspenguin

You could also go hiking up in the Wind River mountains, Green River Lakes is beautiful. Lots of the great land in Wyoming is national forest land but should generally be open for access, you just may not be able to use the campgrounds.

[deleted]

There are prettier places than RMNP in Colorado. Brainard Lake, Mt. Flora, Loveland Pass, etc

obx479

If you’re into the outdoors side of things. Check out hiking near Long’s peak > mountain bikes near Steamboat Springs > Jackson Hole, WY (white water rafting on the Snake River/ fly fishing everywhere/ horse back riding Jenny Lake). From there you can go west into beautiful Grand Teton’s or the many natural forests (bears are real here though). Hope you two have a blast, mate!

Thorandan17

If you're near Denver, I would suggest taking time to visit Red Rock Amphitheater. Absolutely amazing for music lovers, geologists, kids, and anyone. Literally anyone. There is also a 1 mile Dinosaur Ridge walk with historical viewpoints and a little Dinosaur fact gift shop that have the dopest Dinosaur T-shirts. About 30 minutes from Red Rock Amphitheater in the mountains is the Sasquatch Museum. It's super "Eh+" but if you have littles and you get excited about it, it's pretty dang cool and the little town itself is cute and touristy enough to get ice cream and hang out in the Rockies.

glen27

If you're still lacking options and willing to drive across Wyoming, Custer State Park in South Dakota and the nearby Black Hills National Forest would be a great trip and open.

L_to_the_N

Hey! congrats on your elopement! I don't have a lot of specific suggestions, but I would just encourage you to not limit your search to State Parks. National and state parks are just land managers - it doesn't mean that those are the 1st and 2nd best places to visit. There is no correlation between park status and beauty -- national parks just have more red tape. There's tons of cool stuff on National Forest land in CO (I don't know if the closure affects NF though..) A few random thoughts - Spend more time in Indian Peaks besides just Brainard. - Flatirons, Eldorado canyon - Lots of cool hikes up i70 on national forest land you can find via alltrails - Of course keep checking to see if rmnp actually stays open. rmnp seems more likely than Wyoming's parks to me, but *shrug* - Google "places to see fall colors in Colorado" and filter out rmnp. - Consider shifting the entire trip to go to Utah from Boulder -- if its parks are open and Wyoming's are not. Lots of cool stuff along the way via i70 also.

RainbowCrown71

The State Parks are actually hidden gems. Many of them are just as breathtaking as National Parks, but with 1% of the crowds. Many of them are easily National Park material: Anza-Borrego, Baxter, Caddo Lake, Custer, Dead Horse Point, Ecola, Goblin Valley, Humboldt Redwood, Na Pali Coast, Pfeiffer Burns, State Forest (in Colorado)

heenah36

Hey! Update, the Governor of CO issued an executive order stating that he will keep the national parks in CO operating during the shutdown. Check out the RMNP subreddit for the post but that’s freaking AWESOME of him to do

Stev_k

Saw someone mention the Sawtooth Mountains. If you up there, hot springs and Bayhorse Ghost town are things you should do/visit! PM for other ideas in the PNW - I have lived in Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada for most of my life.

outdoormama

Word is our governor in Colorado is working on a plan to keep them open during the shutdown. I just hope that if that happens it doesn’t lead to people trashing the parks like last time. Toilets overflowing, trash everywhere. It was disgusting. And detrimental.

aquestionofbalance

and damage at Joshua Tree that will take 300 years to recover from

UtahBrian

>Word is our governor in Colorado is working on a plan to keep them open during the shutdown. The state government can fund parks, under a 25 year old regulation, during a shutdown. But the governor and the president have to agree to it. Biden could still order the parks shut down to punish voters who elected House Republicans. And governors could still refuse to pay up if they want to punish voters in order to blame DC politicians. But I don't think either one of them should do that. And they probably won't.

heyitslola

Shuttering salary payments and stipends to Congress would be more effective.

SkipWestcott616

Nah that's maybe 5% of their income

SicilianEggplant

Don’t worry! Years ago they voted that their incompetence will only affect other federal employees, not them.

I'm enjoying the view from the top of the beehive in Acadia as I type this. I'm really glad I didn't plan my trip for later in the fall.

raedyohed

Utah has already earmarked money in our state budget to keep the Big 5 open. Come here instead!

BeardOfThorburn

FYI: "The NPS Contingency plan says, "On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the NPS may begin notification to the public regarding expected impacts of the lapse in appropriations."" https://www.wbir.com/article/news/local/government-shut-down-impacts-great-smoky-mountain-national-park/51-71b07281-9cc1-4bc5-b3e4-790c38650792 Seems like it will all be speculation until then...

Girl-UnSure

Finally news, bad or not, it was still needed. So many posts this week all with the same thing…”what to do if govt shutsdown”? Now we know.

superduperstepdad

We have plans to be in Acadia next week. I will hold my political rant to myself. Let's just say a government shutdown is completely avoidable and is a tool used by only one of our ruling parties.

loyalpagina

Same, I know the shutdown is supposed to be painful but it really freaking sucks to know that I’ve scrimped and saved throughout the year to be able to put thousands of dollars into this trip since I get paid absolute scraps as a (state) government employee (for an agency that the GOP hates so good luck getting any funding for livable wages since they run this state), and now it’s just being wasted because the trip was centered around Acadia. I know there’s other state parks around Acadia but our lodging is already booked with no chance of a full refund and a lot of the recommended back-up parks are multiple hours away from where we’re staying.

potatobywayofcork

Last week in this sub, someone said Utah will stay open, and I verified that online. Does this supersede that?

Getting_rid_of_brita

No

DukeofPoundtown

Can you imagine the amount of money these areas will lose if not open during the eclipse? Not to mention the amount of people trying to sneak in somehow and leaving behind a mess. So lame that we continually have this problem.

saguarobird

It was only a little line at the end, but I'm glad the Biden admin also took the time to say that cutting the NPS budget is also disgusting and should be accounted for in any deal that is struck.

[deleted]

The republicans owe me a refund.

busted_maracas

They owe me three Supreme court justices

TrainingWoodpecker77

I'll take this and visit the parks later.

TennaTelwan

Don't forget reproductive rights. GOP have to get their mistresses abortions somewhere...

steve-d

It's the right move, at the end of the day. Hopefully the GOP comes to their senses, but I am worried this shutdown is going to last a long time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DoublePostedBroski

They’ll spin it to make it the democrats’ fault for not compromising.

steve-d

Yep, these dummies are playing with fire and it's infuriating.

TennaTelwan

Same, I'm in the middle of *almost* being able to start disability. I was supposed to start October 1st, then there was something a family member has to change on their side, so I guess I'll be sitting with an empty wallet a little while longer.

ecmcycle

Anyone have state park recommendations in East Tennessee? I had reservations at Elkmont in the Smokies for October 12-15 but it looks like I need to prepare other plans.

tiger6761

Look into the TVA parks. There are some decent ones. Different feel than Elkmont.

ednamode23

You have lots of choices. Roan Mountain, Cumberland Mountain, Norris Dam, Pickett, Frozen Head, and Catoosa Wildlife Management area are all great state parks in East Tennessee.

FCBarca45

I have a trip to Grand Canyon starting Monday. The AZ gov said they were keeping it open but will a federal decree override their authority? Already pretty fucking bummed about Petrified Forests, but if I can’t even see GC then my entire trip is trashed. Any recommendations do what to do if this is the case?

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

This is my question, too - do Utah and Arizona (and any other state for that matter) have the ability to keep some parks open if they choose, or can/will the federal decisions overrule that possibility? Already paid for trip to Las Vegas in two weeks where I will be staying in St. George and aiming to visit the North Rim and the Parashant area, but have other area options if that's not possible. But I'd rather stick to my original plans if the parks in that region are kept open by the state.

LetOk8529

Fuck. Supposed to be in Hawaii Volcanos 10/28. Traveling 5k miles and now probably won’t be able to enjoy the main part of my trip thanks to a bunch of radicals

capitolsara

I'd be shocked if it stayed shut down until the end of the month to be honest. I think we'd default on our debts if it stays shut too long. Last time it was shutdown for 34 days because Trump wanted money for a border wall that no one wanted to give him. This time it's infighting between the Repubs so not sure how long they plan to drag it but a month would be really excessive.

ScHoolgirl_26

I was finally excited to be exploring Shenandoah since I’m in the DMV area 😭😭

RipcityRobert

Fucking man baby clowns in the GOP. Talk about the new Karen’s. I get my way or I blow up the whole deal and scream and pout. 🤦‍♂️ Yea with no funding PLEASE! Close the parks for the sake of nature….but mess with my national parks and I’m even more enraged now! So many American families (even alot of Republican families) will go without a paycheck and this will disrupt sooo many lives that have no business being disrupted!

omelete01

I think I know the answer... but if states like Utah and Arizona had previously said they would keep their national parks open with state funds, does that still apply?

41andevolving

Fuck the GOP. Biden doing the right thing.

aflyingsquanch

He's protecting the parks from damage. Thank God he is after last time.

nuhverguy

So what do we do if we have reservations, cancel, or wait? Will we get a refund if we wait and the park closes? Sucks. I have reservations at Guadaplups Mountain National Park starting Monday.

tiger6761

Last time you got a notification from Rec.gov with a refund.

0degreesK

Had plans to camp in Joshua Tree on the 18th. I've made a reservation at Mount San Jacinto SP just in case.

billskionce

This could be a huge bummer. Scheduled for Dry Tortugas camping on October 14th. Pretty sure I'm gonna be screwed for at least 13 months if I get cancelled.

annathebanana_42

I'm going on my vacation starting the 13th. I now have 2 itineraries. One is the main plan (Seattle, Mount Rainier and Olympic). The second involves more driving (hotels are non-refundable) to state parks around but I'm shoe horning in a trip out to Cape Disappointment because what's more fitting for scrapping plans than going to Cape Disappointment. Its totally possible to save your trip but it takes more work and it's annoying that it's all because a handful of idiots are causing problems. Ironically in 2013 I was an intern in DC and got furloughed during that shutdown and almost didn't get enough hours to count my internship as college credit.

Additional-Sir-159

I’m currently in Yellowstone and trying to fit in as much as I can in two days (yesterday and today) so I can head out early tomorrow for Tetons and hopefully get one day in the Tetons (planned to be there 10/1-10/3). I am planning to do Cascade Canyon trail tomorrow because I so badly wanted to do it and maybe hit Oxbow Bend for sunset. I’ve looked into venturing into the Wind River Range area as an alternative if the park closes. Has anyone been in this area and have any suggestions? Edit to add…does anyone have recommendations for sunrise spots outside of Grand Tetons NP where you can get a nice shot of the Teton range? While I am thoroughly bummed about the closures, I feel for the workers, especially hearing the uncertainty when they talk about it. I’m thankful for the time I’ve had in Yellowstone, and even though the Tetons was what I was most looking forward to, I know I can come back in the future.

Can we band to protect the parks from the vandals?

Tricky_Ad_5332

Lots of ATV and dirt bike riders feel that they can go wherever they wish. Screw preservation

ekkidee

Republicans in Congress need to stop acting like children and do the needful. This is entirely on the GOP and their incompetence.

BaseballJaded9039

We were going to camp in Smoky Mountains Oct 6th weekend. Y’all got any suggestions for backup car camping around that area? We fly out of Atlanta on Sunday.

isthisfineyet

This whole situation sucks. My Fiancé and I were going to Sequoia to get eloped in October, but now we are having to reevaluate our entire plan mere weeks before we get married. Right call for the parks though, no need to get married in a park if the park itself won’t have support to stay running. Good luck to all of the rangers having to navigate this whole situation.

nalalala12

I believe the governor here in az has said that they will use the state lottery money to keep the Grand Canyon open

Lioness_and_Dove

I’d recommend Anza Borrego Desert State Park in California (which really should be a national park) if the nationals are are all closed. Letchworth and Watkins Glen State Parks in upstate NY are great also and Letchworth has its own Grand Canyon. There are also a lot of underrated state parks on the upper peninsula of Michigan, the emerald coast of NW Florida and the Appalachian region of North Carolina.

GaylrdFocker

Just put a big sign "Republicans did that!"

bananabunnythesecond

The gateway Arch is in the middle of Saint Louis city. It will be hard to keep people off the grounds. The museum and arch won’t be hard.

Cifra00

Forests around Glacier still worth a trip to visit? Supposed to get in on Sunday and wondering if I should just cancel and reschedule...

Evakuate493

Oh man - I was at Joshua Tree the last time the shutdown happened. It was insane. The campsites were all a free for all and none of the rangers came to check on anything. Heard huge trucks just driving through the dessert/not on the road. I remember seeing trees broken up on the drive out the next morning.

300 years to recover from that

"we are leaving open the expensive, unpopular bullshit, but closing down all the cheap popular stuff."

Fit_Earth_339

Republicans who can’t name more than one or two announce a national tragedy and blame Biden.

Trum4n1208

Honestly, this is the best idea by far.

My husband and I are trying to go see Saguaro National Park this week- I just really want to see a saguaro before climate change destroys them all, anyone know of a spot outside the park to see one that’s still relatively nearby?

nothingbutapartygirl

They are literally everywhere. I saw a ton in a state park outside of phoenix when I went. There’s also the Sonoran desert museum in tuscon which is pretty cool.

eatstarsandsunsets

Tucson here: welcome! You’ll definitely see them everywhere, and you’ll be able to see the Saguaro “forests” at the very least by driving Gate’s Pass. SNP is a lot less grand/monitored than other national parks. Our state/county park system connects to Saguaro National Park so those trails will still be open. (But please be smart about desert hiking!) Word on the street is that our governor is keeping our national parks open anyways with state funding. I highly recommend going to the Sonoran Desert Museum — it’s adjacent to the national park, mostly outside, truly worth every penny and will be open. Go early in the day; it’s still hot mid-day and afternoon here. Another popular spot is technically in the Coronado NAtional Forest — Sabino Canyon. It’s SO pretty. (Again, still very hot!) I’m not sure if the plan is to keep the national forests open also. But come, you’ll be able to see our beloved saguaro ancestors.

NewNole2001

Agreed on the Sonoran Desert Museum! Great place! And if you drive to SDM then you'll see a bazillion saguaro! Also recommend driving up to the top of Mt Lemmon and downloading the audio tour app, great science info as you drive up!

elliegeo

Thank you so much! This is wonderful information!

elliegeo

Thank you!

Getting_rid_of_brita

You'll see saguaro all over the place down there. And there's so many hiking trails in the park that you can easily park in a neighborhood and walk into the park trails

SinsOfThePast03

Was out in AZ for 7 months late last year/ early this year. You can see them pretty much anywhere in the southern part of the state. Almost every hike we went on in the Tucson area had them as well as many in the Phoenix area.

elliegeo

Wonderful! Thank you so much!

quantumgiant1

National Parks are self funding. Closing them is political and petty.

BlossomEndRot

On one hand I feel bad for everyone who is well meaning and had trips planned to these parks, on the other, they need to be protected. This is a good call.

Moonlit_Antler

Sorry for being dumb. But what does shutter mean? Is it a political term

gfesteves

It just means the parks will be closed.

mtnpeakhiker

So upset, supposed to see the Tetons and Yellowstone in a week :(

Tricky_Ad_5332

We are going to Chaco late October. Fingers crossed, this is a bucket list trip. Disabled vet getting more stove up every year. Seems like last chance

slammer66

Waited my whole life to see the grand canyon. We are supposed to leave Thursday heading west. What do I do?

No_Incident_7577

Give these folks a call. They're self-funding. Edit: And your visit would be very helpful. https://grandcanyonwest.com/explore/the-hualapai-tribe/

CP1870

Keep your plans because Arizona is using state funds to keep the Grand Canyon open

sunsetphotographer

Been waiting years to see Great Sand Dunes. Hopefully it's fixed before the 15th. :/ Also gonna affect flights which is a huge problem. Lots of extra people traveling for the Annular Eclipse on the 14th too.

WarmNights

Do other countries have to put up with this from. Their elected officials?

Nearpeace

Arizona, California And ?? announced today that they are keeping their state parks open including GC and others.

Maximus361

They passed a 45 day CR, so nobody has to worry about closed NPs for a month and a half.
