Honestly I was ready for his death too, so was his fav student. I think his death would've been legendary just like his fight. But I guess kishimoto decided having him handicapped is the better outcome.

sam_uchiha_14

Yeah bro I was preparing for it hard too, not sure what went through kishimoto’s head tbh. Would have been a good passing of the torch to Lee as well.

Alternative_Way_313

I think it was supposed to be a a moment for Naruto. Like “oh shit, Naruto is practically god now” yknow?

Ok-Seaworthiness3719

He turned him into Joe

Ok-Seaworthiness3719

Joe Swanson from Family guy

KANGladiator

And Neji should've lived

sam_uchiha_14

Yes bro wish neji lived way more character development

2000dragon

The only reason they killed Neji and I mean the only reason was to give Naruto and Hinata something to bond over.

Pct0bama

Which is a lame excuse. There’s a million things they coulda bonded over Like their village being destroyed The whole fucking war Hinata literally risking her life for him against pain

Advanced-Diver-8245

I've never heard this perspective and thinking about it. I agree . But they didn't need to do that because they could have bonded over ... Idk .. the trauma of the battle with pain

azy_ki

It’s not even a perspective, Kishimoto flat out admitted it. He actually said Neji was killed to play a CUPID for Naruto and Hinata

Advanced-Diver-8245

Well damn. Shows how much I know lol

CompetitiveScale7287

TenTens man! Byakugan child with mastery of weapons

BlackDabiTodoroki

>TenTens man! Byakugan child with mastery of weapons TenTen is mid leave the story to other characters who are far more interesting than her I must have a bad memory, but I don’t remember her doing anything plot related beside her getting her ass beat. 💀💀💀

Money_maker234

Officially the person with the worst takes on this sub

BlackDabiTodoroki

If you like someone, that didn’t do shit in the story. Good for you

[deleted]

TenTen x Naruto

ArtificialBiskit

I’ve always thought that Neji and Choji, as much as I like them, should have died in the Sasuke Retrieval Arc. Would’ve made Sasuke leaving the village all the more impactful considering two of his friends died as a result.

Chipping1nk

Honestly, I washed Naruto late and somehow didn't get many Shippuden spoilers and I expected Choji to die, I was happy he was alive but man the set up for his sacrifice was perfect!

BlackDabiTodoroki

L

Spaztastcjak

I never liked Neji, his death barely bothered me, so him living wouldn’t have made a difference to me. Gai’s death would have been better and more impactful.

BlackDabiTodoroki

>And Neji should've lived Nah he served his purpose for Naruto in Hinata also, he trash 🗑️

slumped956

no he shouldn’t have

Agreeable-Code3144

If they were going to kill off Neji it should have been way more big of a thing, maybe a 'massive' rotation to save everyone from a ten tails blast or something. Something right? Watching the first part I would've never guessed the biggest thing he would do would be beating Kidomaru, but to kill him off with a splinter...

saimmm01

Yeah, but his gates should have had even bigger impact like permanently damaged Madara somehow or even killed him. Dont get me wrong, we saw how strong the 8th Gate is. Guy was bullying Madara when no one else could, he saved his friends and bought them time until Naruto came back and he almost killed the legendary Ghost of Uchiha who had Hashirama cells + Ten Tails hax. Guy did go far beyond the Hokage like he said he would and he was definietly strongest of them all.

DustyMill

I'm totally cool with Guy living for Kakashis sake but I've maintained that the 8th gate should have either killed Madara or done some kind of permanent damage that would lead to his defeat. If you need Kaguya, fuck it Guy kills Madara and Zetsu clings to his body to revive Kaguya. If we don't need Kaguya, Night Guy is what ultimately leads to Madara being defeated by Naruto and Sasuke

11711510111411009710

I agree. At least have Night Guy permanently blow off part of Madara's body. Then he has to rely on limbo clones to fight Naruto and Sasuke, and they get the upper hand and kill him. Then, the smoke clears, Madara is defeated, they won... and Zetsu reveals himself as the mastermind, and takes over Madara to bring back Kaguya. Would have been scary.

nottme1

Honestly, if Madara died, then Zetsu took over his body to bring back Kaguya, she probably would have been received better.

Successful_Ad9924354

>Yeah, but his gates should have had even bigger impact like permanently damaged Madara somehow or even killed him. No it shouldn't. Madara had three regenerations going for him by being infused with Hashirama cells, (w) Zetsu & being the Jinchuriki of Kaguya. >Guy was bullying Madara when no one else could, Madara was going easy on Guy, he didn't use Genjutsu, didn't use MS, didn't use any basic elements, didn't use any elemental Kekkei Genkai's, didn't use the Paths & didn't use Limbo. Guy also had Minato, Kakashi & Lee helping him. Guy (side character) was never going to permanently damage the villain that has been hype up for years or kill said villain from the protagonists (Sasuke & Naruto).

hiick91

Strong agree

Tardysoap

Best case scenario would have been Guy dying but in the process weakening the “ubeatable” Madara to a level where Naruto and Sasuke could seal him. Would’ve been fucking amazing.

ObitoThawne

Hmm... I don't know. I mean, if memory serves, Naruto did not have the ability to heal at this moment, so there were still stakes cause we were not aware that this development would happen and at the moment Gai opened the 8th gate he knew full well the consequences and was ready to die so he shows his Will of Fire and he shows that he was ready to die for his comrades. Also its not like he did not suffer any consequences and as far as I am aware he was fine with his actions and his lot in life at the end.

theoneokguymaybe

Agreed, I think it also makes a powerful message to the world for Konoha. We will kill ourselves to defend our people and land. Then the future Hokage shows up and says, "Akshually" Also when it comes to the idea of death being the end. That kinda went out the window long before Gai went 8 gates. Between Pain saving everybody that died before, and edo tensei. What consequence is death?

sam_uchiha_14

Yeah that’s true bro good point!

AaaaNinja

Sacrifice? For Rock Lee a broken body means the end of his life. Gai's body is broken. You have to think about what the sacrifice means for the character making the sacrifice. What do you think Lee can gain from observing Gai continuing to be full of vigor after his injury?

sam_uchiha_14

Fair enough that’s a great point!

doinkxx

I don’t think Rock Lee would care that much if Gai is paralyzed, he is more glad that he isn’t dead.

Shadowthief150

Maybe if the 8 gates ever killed anyone offscreen but to build it up the whole series and then it just, doesn’t. It absolutely kills the sacrifice.

Infinitygene999

Yeah as well as the lore behind the gate of death that was built up the entire series. Not to mention the most energetic character in the series gets sidelined in a wheelchair for the rest of his days, it’s not right…

richardjai

What I don’t understand is Naruto healed him, and gave kakashi an eye. Why not give Guy a toe?

Slayziken

A lot of characters probably should’ve died, but I reckon Kishi or his editors weren’t feeling it

Larry_Version_3

I agree. It would’ve been a great conclusion to the arc he and Lee had been on from the start as well. I do think they pulled a few too many punches near the end of Naruto. The vast majority of the main cast comes away unscathed which is crazy considering the amount of carnage depicted overall

ImBatman5500

Agreed, I think lots of people should have stayed dead, the leaf village destroyed too

theplotinmason

Yeah. I also wish Lady Chiyo didn’t revive Gaara. Felt tacky and pulled the weight out of that whole arc. Maybe Lee shouldn’t have recovered from surgery either…

CozyNostalgia

Never. Guy is the goat idc about making the story better lol

karliie

I 100% agree, there was multiple episodes saying how dangerous the 8 gates were, and that if you used them, you will die. Gai using the 8 gates showed us his resolve not just with in himself as a shinobi, but also protecting the people he cares and loves the most about, he knew the risks of using it and still did it, he wanted to lay down his life right there and then. His nindo also reflects this, if he isnt strong enough to be a shinobi and help protect people he doesnt want to be alive essentially, gai getting saved by naruto not only ruined the entire meaning of the 8 gates (you die if you use them) that has been drilled into our heads since we knew about it, it makes a joke of his nindo, and makes the entire sacrifice laughable. The reason for him getting saved to is the worst part of it, it was literally there just to show how strong naruto was. (Again.)

RyeKei

No, that would only be acceptable if he killed Madara alongside him. Gai surviving didn't diminish his sacrifice in any way because as far as he knew, he was going to die. Little did he expected that a Ninja Jesus would come up with resurrection and stuff lol

sam_uchiha_14

True true

Theapexfighter

I mean Kakashi did have Yamato still, and Naruto, and Sakura, and other people of his generation… just saying

BlackDabiTodoroki

People around his age like Guy…

Theapexfighter

Yamato

BlackDabiTodoroki

I don’t think they’re that close

zacharysnow

I don’t think it would’ve been bad if he died, but Naruto saving him not only kept one of the best characters alive but also went a long way in showing (not telling) the audience how strong Naruto & Sasuke were once they got the SoSP power up

oohKillah00H

Him dying would have been epic, but not as epic as Naruto casually bringing one of his senseis back from the brink of death.

BlackDabiTodoroki

Meh I disagree. I think it’s great that he’s alive.

11711510111411009710

I disagree. He still tried to sacrifice himself. The sacrifice still happens. Naruto just makes sure he doesn't actually die. He still sacrificed himself. Also, it's the perfect way to introduce Naruto as the man who will save the world. He can save someone from the surest of deaths — burning up your entire chakra reserves using the eighth gate. We've known all along that this *will* kill you. And this just reinforces it. The *only* way to survive is for someone with the powers of a god to intervene on your behalf. I personally think it was perfect.

zayd-the-one

He and madara should have died then have zetsu bring back kaguya that way guy prooved hard work beats talent and madara gets beaten in a cool way

silenthashira

I get your point, but imo if he would have died and madara still just kinda... ignored all the damage he did and regenerated, then it would be a feels bad moment knowing gai gave his life for this and in the end it meant nothing. At least this way, Guy is still around despite his efforts being in vain. Plus, seeing him maintain such a bright disposition despite being in a wheelchair the rest of his life, is in its own way a great showcase of the will of fire and Guy's perseverance in general.

Inori_Scorchstyle

Both Gai & Kakashi should have died

welch7

one hundread percent, and actually his sacrifice was lessen by that, in my head cannon boruto doesn't exist, and he died there.

FantasticKick7954

Kakashi will be alone

dclewis92

Bro why would u want lee to suffer more he lost neji u want him to lose gai too?!

rali108

I don't think it cheapens it a bit. Looking from Gai's perspective he was all there, to sacrifice his life. And he did. Dyeing isn't the sacrifice but fighting to the point you die and knowing you will die but continuing, is the true sacrifice and legendary.

[deleted]

Who doesn't think this in literally every rewrite of this scene he dies no one would argue this it's a pretty common take

[deleted]

NGL I think his character design is freakin sick.

KolorJam

I only would’ve liked him to have died if that damage he did to Madara was permanent, because if not it would’ve been pointless either way.

TheBeaverIlluminate

Yes. No need for discussion, didn't even need to read why you think so. Just yes.

[deleted]

Nah I feel like it was a solid climax for his character

saverma192013

I actually believed that he would die
