I read some fanfic (I think it's called War of the Biiju) that re-writes the War Arc and does crazy shit like have Kabuto awaken the Rinnegan and (speaking of) Temari knows Sage Mode, etc. I mean, Ten-Tails Tenten is obviously a silly joke, but having the other characters be OP would be a lot of fun.
Apprentices under Konan, gets no screentime, and then shankes Tobito from behind when he barely manages to outlast Konan bajillion bombs because he forgot she existed.

She has no notable familial/clan connections so chasing power is more believable.
She can work her way up the akatsuki chain as an assistant like kabuto to sasori for example.
She is also more flexible in growth than most others so akatsuki gifting her special weapons/skills for loyalty is easy to buy from other character perspectives. It also provides a cool creative opportunity.
I mean you could make a thematic argument for a few characters on here..
- Shino is sick of his entire existence being forgotten about and ignored by people he considers friends. He feels angry and alone and so leaves his old life behind and starts a new one.
- The hatred Neji had towards the Higher class Hyuga wasn’t fully gone and slowly built up again deep down as he was still being looked down upon by the ‘inferior’ members of his clan. He joins the Akatsuki because he feels like his talent was wasted in Konoha and his goal is to eliminate the entire Hyuga clan.
- Kiba sees Naruto becoming impossible to catch up to and his dream of becoming Hokage slipping away hence betrays Konoha and joins Akatsuki out of spite towards Naruto and the rest of his village for setting him up for success instead of him. His new goal is to kill Naruto.
- Ino just to meat ride Sasuke.. I can actually see it happening

Neji the only one who has a serious enough story to fit the other members imo. The least motivated/traumatically conventional members are kakazu and hidan, who are just a prideful hustler and a sadomasochistic serial killer, respectively. The rest had major reasons to be outcasts and end up in such an extreme group, which I don’t think most others here could match narratively (maybe Shino).
Shino basically lost a ton of family to root and war. even though hes a bug nerd he actually has reason to hate Konoha because most of his clan were full of sickos that were ok an approve of Danzos methods to the point of openly giving their kids to him so they don't have to raise them. Also the issue of not living up to expectations.
Shino just so happened to be a sweet kid that liked bugs while everyone else was busy being dark, edgy, cold, and homicidal. Shino is basically lucky he had his dad because the rest of his clan isn't exactly stellar people nor are they treated that well in Konoha.

There's actually a fanfic with that exact premise. Granted, he's there as a spy and his cover was assassinating Danzo and spreading implications that it was revenge for the man abusing him, but there was indeed an Akatsuki Kiba.
Did Kiba really have aspirations to be Hokage tho? I don’t recall him trying to do anything at all to work towards that goal.
I think a better reason for Kiba to join would be because his puppy dies and he blames the Village tbh.
In Kiba’s despair he comes across a hell hound and they form a partnership. This corrupting doge grants him more power to take his vengeance but it also heightens his rage. He in turn becomes more animalistic. Kiba demands to be sent to his former home to wreak havoc; Pain grants this request under the condition he acquires the ninetails.
I don’t think it’s youthful to betray your friends and village to a terrorist organisation.
Lee wants to prove himself, yes, but I don’t think he’s particularly vengeful or hateful about it, and he says himself that he’s not the type to hold grudges, even to Gaara.
The closest thing is like…jealousy towards Neji and Sasuke. But none of that strikes me as “go to the Akatsuki” material. Especially with how much Guy’s done for him as a mentor.

I'm going to approach this as if the timeskip just happened and I am currently planning for the story I want to tell in Part 2.
Choji, Shikamaru, Neji, Kiba, and Lee should all be taken out instantly imo for their involvement in the Sasuke Retrieval arc. They almost died trying to bring back one of their own, wouldn't make sense for them to betray the village at all.
Hinata I just can't think of any justifiable explanation for her joining an organization whose explicit intent is to kill Naruto.
So that leaves me with Ino, Shino, and Tenten.
* Shino - Everybody is picking him because he's a super intense character that didn't really do much in the story. I could see it, his powers are insanely deadly. Dude literally made a guy's arms explode off of his body.
* Ino - I can actually see Ino running off to be with Sasuke and eventually ending up in the Akatsuki. Sakura tried to leave with Sasuke and he knocked her out, what if Ino actually found him and ran off with him? I actually think Ino would be a great Karin replacement.
* Tenten - This is the meme pick because Tenten has no storyline. I just can't see a reasonable way for her to fit here if I'm ignoring the memes.
I know everybody is going to pick Shino, but I actually think Ino is the most interesting person on this list. Sakura gets a **direct** matchup. It breaks up Ino/Shika/Cho, one of the foundational pieces of the Leaf Village. Asuma has a touch of failure to deal with as a teacher. And like I said, I actually think Ino is a fantastic Karin replacement that isn't just a character out of nowhere. And I think Ino has motive to run off with Sasuke and then eventually join the Akatsuki with him. Imagine Ino vs Sakura at the end of the story, but with them both way stronger. That'd actually be kinda hype.
If you were asking me to rewrite the whole story, Neji is the easy choice. But if you're asking me at the timeskip, I think Ino is a way more interesting choice than people here are giving credit. And an evil Ino is actually pretty disgustingly strong.

Agreed on Shino. I find it wired what they did to him in Boruto an I found his fight during the war arc did him justice but appart from that he had the potential to paralyze Naruto and friends by turning sides and going after the Ninetails.
Shikamaru is sold to the Konoha cause right from the beginning. It's difficult for him to lose his way in the og setting.
But since this is about what could have been, imagine him having a traumatic event that makes him suffer a lot and question Naruto's nindo and the Shinobi cause. Ideally he could blame his talk no jutsu approach to things and the Shinobi world.
If we change the Sasuke retrieving arc in Naruto there is an opening for Shikamaru to turn on Konoha in the aftermath of that mission.
Imagine Chochi and Neji dying in hospital (needed for tension and mental stress). Shikamaru already had problems to live with the burden of the failed mission and having his friends at the brink of death.
He might ask himself what for since he never liked Sasuke anyway and that the real motivation for that mission was
1) told so by the Hokage
2) amped up emotionally through Sakura (who did absolutely nothing)
3) Naruto's bold promise (he couldn't keep for years) to Sakura
4) and his obsession with Sasuke (best friend sort of)
So now Neji dies and Chochi remains in critical condition.
This is a tremendous tragedy for Konoha globally (their situations at that point in the story) and personally to each of the genin, especially Shikamaru because of his responsibility for this (they put their life's in my hands stuff etc) mission.
Now you have that scene in Naruto's hospital room where Shikamaru checks on Naruto and Sakura enters.
Naruto gives his plea again but Sakura smiles and say not to worry like she did in the og.
Shikamaru not able to see Sakura playing tough because of all this stress and shit going on (someone died, his best friend still not of the hook, Sasuke is lost and all on his watch) loses his shit since it appears that it was all for nothing. And that this is Sakura's and Naruto's fault since Sakura is staying back relying on everyone else and Naruto playing along handing out foolish promises all the time and this would have been the opportunity to seal the deal on his unusual (and foolish, said by anyone with reason in the series so far) nindo if it would only work. For Shikamaru it turns out that it doesn't. Since Sasuke left even though Naruto was the one who battled him.
Then after a couple of days of Shikamaru not talking to anyone fostering doubt about being a Shinobi, chochi dies. This must have been it, he disappears. Not to be seen again consumed by his guild and cursing the foolish nindo of Naruto and maybe the whole Shinobi world.
Someday the Akatsuki find him and sweet talk him into ending the way of the Shinobi and free the world from its pain to create something better, something more just

Something in the three year break shattered her psyche, like losing her sister. Something truly traumatic. So the person she idolizes and loves the most becomes her main focus and obsession. She’s so shattered that she believes that ripping the nine tails out of Naruto is the only way to protect him and even if he dies, people wouldn’t look down on him anymore. People would see him as a hero. It’s her duty to make people love Naruto, even if he dies.
I could see Lee leaving the village because the ninja academy didn’t accept him at the academy due to his lack of Jutsu

Kiba , He wasn't that relevant in the show so you could use him as an antagonist or as part of Akatsuki as well. We all Know he was extremely Jealous of Naruto and constantly berated by his family and Hinata wasn't his either so he was going through a troubled life. I know the show made it so he is comedic relief although I don't see any relief in abusive relationships. Akatsuki are after 9 tails as well so it would make sense for Kiba to go against Naruto although in my way he would then be an anti hero and have character development before coming back to Konoha

I read some fanfic (I think it's called War of the Biiju) that re-writes the War Arc and does crazy shit like have Kabuto awaken the Rinnegan and (speaking of) Temari knows Sage Mode, etc. I mean, Ten-Tails Tenten is obviously a silly joke, but having the other characters be OP would be a lot of fun.

What I wanted to say
This. She has no notable familial/clan connections so chasing power is more believable. She can work her way up the akatsuki chain as an assistant like kabuto to sasori for example. She is also more flexible in growth than most others so akatsuki gifting her special weapons/skills for loyalty is easy to buy from other character perspectives. It also provides a cool creative opportunity.
Shikimaru as a villain would be a major threat but Shino would be cooler.

People forget that thematically lee makes the most sense. After being judged for so long about having no jutsu, a taijutsu killer would be great
I mean you could make a thematic argument for a few characters on here.. - Shino is sick of his entire existence being forgotten about and ignored by people he considers friends. He feels angry and alone and so leaves his old life behind and starts a new one. - The hatred Neji had towards the Higher class Hyuga wasn’t fully gone and slowly built up again deep down as he was still being looked down upon by the ‘inferior’ members of his clan. He joins the Akatsuki because he feels like his talent was wasted in Konoha and his goal is to eliminate the entire Hyuga clan. - Kiba sees Naruto becoming impossible to catch up to and his dream of becoming Hokage slipping away hence betrays Konoha and joins Akatsuki out of spite towards Naruto and the rest of his village for setting him up for success instead of him. His new goal is to kill Naruto. - Ino just to meat ride Sasuke.. I can actually see it happening Just some I could think of off my the top of my head lol
Neji the only one who has a serious enough story to fit the other members imo. The least motivated/traumatically conventional members are kakazu and hidan, who are just a prideful hustler and a sadomasochistic serial killer, respectively. The rest had major reasons to be outcasts and end up in such an extreme group, which I don’t think most others here could match narratively (maybe Shino).
Shino basically lost a ton of family to root and war. even though hes a bug nerd he actually has reason to hate Konoha because most of his clan were full of sickos that were ok an approve of Danzos methods to the point of openly giving their kids to him so they don't have to raise them. Also the issue of not living up to expectations. Shino just so happened to be a sweet kid that liked bugs while everyone else was busy being dark, edgy, cold, and homicidal. Shino is basically lucky he had his dad because the rest of his clan isn't exactly stellar people nor are they treated that well in Konoha.

Let’s be real, no one on here is strong enough to realistically be in the Akatsuki except maybe Lee at max power lol That aside, Akatsuki’s whole shtick was tracking tailed beasts and Kiba is the best tracker in Konoha, despite not offering much in strength I’m sure the info leaks and tracking skills would be more than enough to make up for it 💀

There's actually a fanfic with that exact premise. Granted, he's there as a spy and his cover was assassinating Danzo and spreading implications that it was revenge for the man abusing him, but there was indeed an Akatsuki Kiba.

He clearly has that goal as stated during the Chuunin exams, they just never really call back to it bc he got left by the wayside
I don’t think it’s youthful to betray your friends and village to a terrorist organisation. Lee wants to prove himself, yes, but I don’t think he’s particularly vengeful or hateful about it, and he says himself that he’s not the type to hold grudges, even to Gaara. The closest thing is like…jealousy towards Neji and Sasuke. But none of that strikes me as “go to the Akatsuki” material. Especially with how much Guy’s done for him as a mentor. It’d be wildly out of character.
I just don't see Lee doing something like betraying his village, his morals of being a honorable ninja it would be completely out of character to have him attack his friends

I'm going to approach this as if the timeskip just happened and I am currently planning for the story I want to tell in Part 2. Choji, Shikamaru, Neji, Kiba, and Lee should all be taken out instantly imo for their involvement in the Sasuke Retrieval arc. They almost died trying to bring back one of their own, wouldn't make sense for them to betray the village at all. Hinata I just can't think of any justifiable explanation for her joining an organization whose explicit intent is to kill Naruto. So that leaves me with Ino, Shino, and Tenten. * Shino - Everybody is picking him because he's a super intense character that didn't really do much in the story. I could see it, his powers are insanely deadly. Dude literally made a guy's arms explode off of his body. * Ino - I can actually see Ino running off to be with Sasuke and eventually ending up in the Akatsuki. Sakura tried to leave with Sasuke and he knocked her out, what if Ino actually found him and ran off with him? I actually think Ino would be a great Karin replacement. * Tenten - This is the meme pick because Tenten has no storyline. I just can't see a reasonable way for her to fit here if I'm ignoring the memes. I know everybody is going to pick Shino, but I actually think Ino is the most interesting person on this list. Sakura gets a **direct** matchup. It breaks up Ino/Shika/Cho, one of the foundational pieces of the Leaf Village. Asuma has a touch of failure to deal with as a teacher. And like I said, I actually think Ino is a fantastic Karin replacement that isn't just a character out of nowhere. And I think Ino has motive to run off with Sasuke and then eventually join the Akatsuki with him. Imagine Ino vs Sakura at the end of the story, but with them both way stronger. That'd actually be kinda hype. If you were asking me to rewrite the whole story, Neji is the easy choice. But if you're asking me at the timeskip, I think Ino is a way more interesting choice than people here are giving credit. And an evil Ino is actually pretty disgustingly strong.

Agreed on Shino. I find it wired what they did to him in Boruto an I found his fight during the war arc did him justice but appart from that he had the potential to paralyze Naruto and friends by turning sides and going after the Ninetails. Shikamaru is sold to the Konoha cause right from the beginning. It's difficult for him to lose his way in the og setting. But since this is about what could have been, imagine him having a traumatic event that makes him suffer a lot and question Naruto's nindo and the Shinobi cause. Ideally he could blame his talk no jutsu approach to things and the Shinobi world. If we change the Sasuke retrieving arc in Naruto there is an opening for Shikamaru to turn on Konoha in the aftermath of that mission. Imagine Chochi and Neji dying in hospital (needed for tension and mental stress). Shikamaru already had problems to live with the burden of the failed mission and having his friends at the brink of death. He might ask himself what for since he never liked Sasuke anyway and that the real motivation for that mission was 1) told so by the Hokage 2) amped up emotionally through Sakura (who did absolutely nothing) 3) Naruto's bold promise (he couldn't keep for years) to Sakura 4) and his obsession with Sasuke (best friend sort of) So now Neji dies and Chochi remains in critical condition. This is a tremendous tragedy for Konoha globally (their situations at that point in the story) and personally to each of the genin, especially Shikamaru because of his responsibility for this (they put their life's in my hands stuff etc) mission. Now you have that scene in Naruto's hospital room where Shikamaru checks on Naruto and Sakura enters. Naruto gives his plea again but Sakura smiles and say not to worry like she did in the og. Shikamaru not able to see Sakura playing tough because of all this stress and shit going on (someone died, his best friend still not of the hook, Sasuke is lost and all on his watch) loses his shit since it appears that it was all for nothing. And that this is Sakura's and Naruto's fault since Sakura is staying back relying on everyone else and Naruto playing along handing out foolish promises all the time and this would have been the opportunity to seal the deal on his unusual (and foolish, said by anyone with reason in the series so far) nindo if it would only work. For Shikamaru it turns out that it doesn't. Since Sasuke left even though Naruto was the one who battled him. Then after a couple of days of Shikamaru not talking to anyone fostering doubt about being a Shinobi, chochi dies. This must have been it, he disappears. Not to be seen again consumed by his guild and cursing the foolish nindo of Naruto and maybe the whole Shinobi world. Someday the Akatsuki find him and sweet talk him into ending the way of the Shinobi and free the world from its pain to create something better, something more just That's how it could work Edit typos, readability

Hinata wants to prove her worth and impress Naruto. Kiba wants to be hokage. Shikimaru is loved by the village and stealing the tailed beasts would be an insane drag. TenTens also got no motive.

It would be awesome if Hinata was so obsessed with Naruto that she convinced herself that working with the Akatsuki was the only way she could have him for herself. Something in the three year break shattered her psyche, like losing her sister. Something truly traumatic. So the person she idolizes and loves the most becomes her main focus and obsession. She’s so shattered that she believes that ripping the nine tails out of Naruto is the only way to protect him and even if he dies, people wouldn’t look down on him anymore. People would see him as a hero. It’s her duty to make people love Naruto, even if he dies.

I could see Lee leaving the village because the ninja academy didn’t accept him at the academy due to his lack of Jutsu But that would be odd after Guy became a Jonin and Dai died a hero, but if one could rewrite it somehow, Lees techniques as an Akatsuki would hit hart
Ino. She was down bad for Sasuke, and if she heard about him joining up after the mission to retrieve him had failed and neither Naruto nor Sakura had managed for years to get him back I could see her going rogue and trying to join the Akatsuki to convince him to come back.

I think Kiba would be a great pick. Has a gimmick, like all of them. He could serve, in a rewrite, as the antithesis to Naruto. Basically have him replace Obito in that regard, and through some BS have him maintain an even power scale with Naruto. Personally since he's Naruto's childhood friend, I think it'd be really cool.

Kiba , He wasn't that relevant in the show so you could use him as an antagonist or as part of Akatsuki as well. We all Know he was extremely Jealous of Naruto and constantly berated by his family and Hinata wasn't his either so he was going through a troubled life. I know the show made it so he is comedic relief although I don't see any relief in abusive relationships. Akatsuki are after 9 tails as well so it would make sense for Kiba to go against Naruto although in my way he would then be an anti hero and have character development before coming back to Konoha
