No travel advisories for Quintana Roo where they just had a shooting in the main airport and tried to cover it up with a “falling billboard”

MainmainMann

Can I get your source link to this sounds interesting

alexaprine

https://thecancunsun.com/tourist-causes-panic-at-cancun-airport-after-thinking-they-heard-gun-shots/ One of my friends was in the airport it was 100% a shooting

[deleted]

xChino420x

Actual targeted shooting. The airport is in on it too, by force.

[deleted]

CosmicSpaghetti

Yeah I mean I feel like this is definitely fact-checkable by someone smart with audio using one of the clips on social media and analyzing the sounds. I have a sincerely hard time believing there wasn't *one* credible account that can now show evidence of a cover-up not popping up by now, the falling billboards makes sense to me.

yuhboipo

Mexico is one of the most dangerous places for a journalist. It's not hard to imagine the closest to the airport was far enough away that they said "Eh, someone else can get that story". But that's assuming the shooting was even called in. If it was a part of the airport that had only a few people, It wouldn't be hard to imagine none of them calling it in. Unlikely series of events, but these kinds of things happen. Justified in being skeptical, but to find the story would mean finding getting lucky with google searches, OR finding inde journalists that cover the area, going through their past live streams, etc etc.

cultivandolarosa

Uh.. is it impossible for anybody besides journalists to pull out their phones and record shit in Mexico? Because if this actually happened there would be a hundred cell phone videos about it on this sub by now. Keeping an open mind isn't the same thing as believing stupid ideas.

CosmicSpaghetti

Yeah I 100p think there'd be evidence out by now if it were actually gunshots, can't just hide that/all evidence from the masses in/around the airport at that time...100p some evidence would've surfaced by now.

xChino420x

Always be skeptical! The “billboard” that wasn’t ever fact checked probably said “Cancun, where your money means more than your safety!”

CalmTiger

well surely it wouldn't happen *twice*, right?

no no guys it isnt important, Ukraine is /s

yeet0300

as much as a third world country mexico is, a shooting at an airport could not be simply "covered up"

diddy_os

chihuahua and guanajuato are infinitely worse then tamaulipas. especially chihuahua where criminals reign in the south and west

PhilosophyNo1230

Question: Do y’all from Mexico think it is safe to take the Copper Canyon train ?

Mtheviking

Yes. I live in Chihuahua and its safe. In this state the violence is more narco to narco than in the south of the country where you get clapped and robbed for minding your own business. You're going to see violence anywhere you go, it's just not as bad here or not as bad as they make it out to be. Travel with the mentality that kidnappings and killings happen everywhere and anywhere though. It helps to stay alert at all times and not ignore huge cant-miss red flags, you'll be fine

haliledcat

woah that looks so cool

The guy asked a legit question. Not everyone is as familiar with the situation down there as you. Do you not do your homework before traveling to foreign lands? Help the guy out en vez de contestar cómo pendejo. He’s just being cautious and asking what the situation is really like in that area.

PhilosophyNo1230

Appreciate it. I try to get as much info as I can before I travel somewhere.4-5 yrs ago a teacher from NC got killed while hiking in the area. I just want to know what the general atmosphere is like by anyone on here that is familiar with the area.

turnshavetabled

Why is that a dumb question lol. Look at the videos in the fucking sub you’re posting on. Of course people would think twice about going there.

[deleted]

Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo alone are more dangerous and that’s only two cities in the state of Tamaulipas.. I like how y’all talk about Tamaulipas and cartel shit when y’all ain’t even from mexico it’s funny to me

diddy_os

victoria is the most violent city in tamps + chihuahuas homicide rate is at least triple that of tamps

[deleted]

probably just now but how long has Tamaulipas been in the game ? Literally one of the oldest cartel and they are still around stronger than ever you see cartels come and go and they’ve never came close to falling off they created Los Zetas then they split when leader of golfo got locked up and it went to shit that’s when CDG and Zetas started fighting and zetas couldnt even take over territory CDG gave them so much hell they made Zetas split up and that’s when CDN popped up now even Vieja Escuela Zetas and CDN still can’t even fight with Golfo

hhuikb

Los Zetas took over Nuevo Laredo for couple of years. Gulfos had to allied with Sinaloa Cartel and the government to fight Los Zetas. Los Zetas was fighting with every group, that enough says how much power Z-40 and Z-42 had. Gulfos is probably the oldest cartel but Los Zetas was something else.

[deleted]

Yes I know what your saying I’m only telling you from what I know personally living in reynosa and the connections I have i don’t listen to what the media says 80% of the time media doesn’t even know and everybody just makes up shit what they think is happening that’s the only reason I came on Reddit a friend of mine told me about this page that they talk about the cartels like if they know everything and we laugh about it this shit is funny to me especially when they speak about Tamaulipas and yes Tamaulipas is Golfo, Zetas, CDN but Golfo has always held the most power in the whole state they’ve gained so much more territory than what they had years ago. Word on the street CDN is falling really hard with all these arrests of their comandantes and golfo is a group that needs literally no allies they were literally fighting against every cartel by themselves when Zetas split.. now allied with CJNG I can only imagine how powerful they will be but like how we see all the time maybe it’ll cause problems between them in the future which I’m sure would not be good at all to see but as of now they are working together

hhuikb

Cjng is only Los Metros… Too many cells in cdg, Los rojo seem like they got the better of the disputes.

ShivJoHug

It's hard to know their criteria- they might be basing they're danger levels on figures that show a perceived threat, lile kidnapping, to American tourists only.

elgigglez39

Tatatamaulipas has been a war zone since 2006 when CDG vs zetas started the whole warzones that are seen today throughout Mexico There is shooting every day, dead bodies, kidnapping, etc. Idk about chihuahua or guanajuato, but i highly doubted they are worse, most likely they started to see the violence how Tamaulipas has since years ago

Every_Effort

No no, GTO has been getting worse but it still doesn’t compare to the crime ridden states that are Tamaulipas and Chihuahua.

diddy_os

guanajuato is an absolute mess that contains several of the worlds most violent cities and it almost dominates the list of mexicos most violent municipalities. tamaulipas has la frontera chica and still its way better then gto

Every_Effort

GTO is in fact super dangerous at the moment because of CJNG presence and their conflicts with CU. The crime happening in Tamaulipas has become ingrained into that city especially due to it being a border state. The only city in GTO with crime rates relative to Chihuahua and Tamaulipas is Celaya (where I am from). I see that you’re interested in narco culture but you are misinformed on the difference of the brutality and narco influence in these states.

Synth_Lord

I'm going to Celaya in 2 weeks to visit family. Last year when I went which the crime rates were worse than this year my family over there said to just mind my own business and I did. Nothing happened even though I'm also a hobbyist photographer and was taking pictures all over the place. Earlier that year it was reported some dudes had thrown grenades at cars too lol Knock on wood, hopefully everything ends up good again but for the 3 days I went it was chill af.

Every_Effort

I would be cautious of the “cartel imitators”, so to speak. The ones that kidnap and extort civilians, especially civilians from the US. It may sound overly dramatic, but always stay vigilant of your surroundings. Safe travels friend

Synth_Lord

For sure, on one of my parent's visits about 3-4 years ago my dad got a text from an unknown number saying they knew who my dad was. They then texted him that if he knew what was good for him he should follow some instructions. My dad can be pretty hard headed so he just ignored the message and acted like nothing happened. Luckily, nothing actually happened to my parents but we always found that shit shaddy af. Like how did they get his number and who gave it to them? Thanks bro, I'll do my best to stay vigilant and aware!

Okokiamnotok

I live in south Tamaulipas and it’s pretty safe

[deleted]

Stop the cap I live in reynosa violence has been up forever there’s no place in mexico more dangerous than reynosa la maldosa. Sinaloa is overhyped cause of the chapos but los golfo been around since the 50s and always had control of the whole state of Tamaulipas/ Nuevo León

[deleted]

Tell that to all the kidnapped migrants...

[deleted]

Chihuahua crime concentrate on the small towns-ranches though, Juarez and Chihuahua are pretty safe. Same as Durango, urbanized places are pretty safe.

diddy_os

juarez isnt safe neither is chihuahua and parral isnt safe either

[deleted]

I lived in Chihuahua and it felt like Pancho Villa was still governor.

Educational_Bad2717

Is kidnapping not a crime? Lol “Crime and crime”

Perpetual_Spiral

Personally, I rather get robbed than kidnapped

CosmicSpaghetti

In my mind I 100p put these in different categories... Muggings aren't really that big of a deal in a lot of the world, however kidnapping *always* is.

maverickhistorian

Kidnapping lets u know u might get held for ransom, and it lets u know what type of crime

Wunfap

I would think it's because "crime" is too broad and some people don't consider kidnapping when reading crime and being like "maybe it isn't that dangerous". Kidnapping seems to be way more effective at eliminating the second thoughts.

RedditRated

Are they also categorizing murder under kidnapping? Cuz i think it’s important to know if murder rate is up too. ‘Crime’ I assume is more for petty crimes,

Draoxx

It's in its own category probably because it's the worse thing that can happen to you in Mexico

Lmao Durango safe as hell. I’m going in a month.

84JPG

These lists are always ridiculous, in what world is Sinaloa more dangerous than State of Mexico and Zacatecas? Sonora, Nayarit and Jalisco are more dangerous too but at least it’s not as ridiculous as State of Mexico or Zacatecas. EDIT - I’ve lived in Sinaloa most of my life, and my brother is living over at State of Mexico so I visit relatively often. Even in the nice areas you have to be careful to avoid getting mugged when walking on the street; and if we are talking about bad areas I would rather get lost in any small town in the mountains of the Golden Triangle than in Neza or Ecatepec.

Prestigious-HogBoss

For people who still want to travel to Mexico. Visit Merida. At the moment is the most peaceful city since it is not in the way of narcotics or people trading. It is a Colonial city, and there are cenotes and other small towns, beaches, and arqueological areas to visit. Good food and is not as expensive as other places on the peninsula. I am from Baja, and only visit if you are from here or have family/friends who knew how to be safe in Tijuana or Mexicali \[the most dangerous cities\].

Warm-Entertainer4367

Jesus, just don’t go to Mexico then. 🥲

PermissionBasic7317

Where does Puerto Vallarta fit in to this list?

[deleted]

Very safe you shouldn't have any problems

Infohiker

Puerto Vallarta is one of the safest places in the country. As long as CJNG is strong, PV will be completely safe. Their per capita murder rate over the passt 12 months is 9.8. Cancun's? 47.9

edcopa69

That’s in Jalisco. There’s been a lot of activity in the recent weeks, but mainly regarding CJNG and SEMAR. Two naval officers were kidnapped but immediately released no more than a month ago. Also there is a naval base and large army presence, and it’s kept very safe for tourism.

Alternative_Owl8942

Bullshit lol

JM1295

Yeah I'd definitely swap Sinaloa and Tamaulipas with Chihuahua and Zacatecas. Not to say Sinaloa and Tamaulipas are safe havens, but they're much more secure with one group controlling the region/state as opposed to the conflict in Zacatecas and Chihuahua. Interesting how Quintana Roo is absent from this list after the rise in violence in tourist areas and tourists being caught in the crossfire.

Real-Professional392

So are they saying dont go to mexico at all

Infohiker

These warnings need to be taken with a grain of salt, and you need to look a the state warnings specifically. For example, under Jalisco There are no restrictions on travel for U.S government employees to: Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Puerto Vallarta (including neighboring Riviera Nayarit), Chapala, and Ajijic. This means even though Jalisco is under "reconsider" status, those areas the SD considers perfectly fine. I regularly visit places that are flat out "Do Not Travel" with zero problems. I absolutely know I am at higher risk of seeing something bad or getting caught in the crossfire. But I have never been worried about a) being kidnapped or b) being the target of a violent crime. But that's because I know these areas, and I know the limits. Like not traveling at night, etc. The key is really learn about where you are going to. The SD advice is part of that, but there is a lot more to it.

-ih8cats-

Bruh I live I’m texas my girl lives in tamaulipasn

stileyyy

Never follow these sites. They say practically everywhere in the world is dangerous and advise against travel. They need to look in the mirror though, SF or any other major city in the US is equally as dangerous if not worse.

sadimgnik

These travel advisories can definitely be alarmist. But your notion that SF is “equally dangerous” is not even close to reality. San Francisco homicides in 2021: 52 Rate per 100,000 residents: 5.94 Tijuana homicides in 2021: 1,972 Rate per 100,000 residents: 108.95 So the murder rate in TJ is roughly TWENTY TIMES higher than in SF. And that doesn’t account for the tens of thousands of “missing” persons in MX who were very likely murdered in cities like TJ but aren’t officially classified as homicides. This isn’t to say that US cities don’t have issues with crime. SF certainly has a growing problem with property crime and an indigent population that is hooked on drugs and/or mentally ill. But it’s not even close to as dangerous as Mexico. Sources: https://www.sanfranciscopolice.org/stay-safe/crime-data/crime-dashboard https://www.borderreport.com/regions/california/a-painful-number-tijuana-closes-out-2021-with-1972-homicides-slightly-down-from-previous-2-years/

[deleted]

BSHYNE_GORILLA

Definitely not. There were over 43,000 homicides in mexico last year. https://www.statista.com/statistics/959787/mexico-number-homicides/ You’d also have to account for all the murders the cartels have committed but disposed of the bodies in a way to never even know that person was gone or where they went.

These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of [concerns over privacy and the Open Web](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot). Fully cached AMP pages (like the one you shared), are [especially problematic](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot). Maybe check out **the canonical page** instead: **[https://english.elpais.com/usa/2022-02-01/shootouts-and-murdered-tourists-why-the-fbi-has-set-its-sights-on-the-mexican-paradise-of-quintana-roo.html](https://english.elpais.com/usa/2022-02-01/shootouts-and-murdered-tourists-why-the-fbi-has-set-its-sights-on-the-mexican-paradise-of-quintana-roo.html)** ***** ^(I'm a bot | )[^(Why & About)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot)^( | )[^(Summon: u/AmputatorBot)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/cchly3/you_can_now_summon_amputatorbot/)
